Translated from the Ukrainian by GLADYS EVANS Printed in the USSR © Translation into English Dnipro Publishers, 1985 PREFACE Part 1 Childhood impressions often lie couched in a poet’s heart like invaluable chattels, and form an intrinsic part of his, or her, creative writing. We can see this in the poetry of Pushkin, Lermontov, Byron, Heine, Shevchenko and Ivan Franko. Even as a child in her native countryside of Volyn, the outstanding poetess known as Lesya Ukrainka (born Larissa Petrivna Kosach in 1871) absorbed the poetical treasures of her own Ukrainian people — fairy tales, legends, customs, beliefs and songs which stayed with her all her life. Lesya’s childhood was partly spent (1882-1891) on her father’s homestead near the village of Kolodyazhne, Kovel District, formerly Volyn Gubernia. She mixed with the peasant children from whom she imbibed their beautiful folk songs. She listened to the tales of the old folk about the past of her homeland, kept in her memory their fairy tales, legends and traditions, and with all her soul she entered the diverse and melodious world of folk mythology. Already in Lesya’s early lyrical verse, you may come across an evocation of folk-created images such as the Forest-Demon or Demon-Tempter who appears to girls in the shape of a fiery snake or a handsome young man. Later on, in one of her political satires, she introduced a traditional image from Ukrainian folk tales—.the Okh-Chudotvorets (Oh-the Miracle- Maker). And in her well-known dramatic poem “An Autumn Tale” she gives a new twist • to the story of a princess im¬ prisoned in a tower on top of a glass mountain. In her tale called “About the Giant,” written shortly before her death (1913), Lesya uses a Ukrainian folk-tale plot to portray the people’s awakening. It was Lesya Ukrainka’s fate to do much travelling: her serious illness (tuberculosis of the bones) forced her to live abroad a good deal and keep to a strict medical regime. However, the poetess worked on with great courage. All of her writings are permeated with thoughts about the destiny of her beloved Ukrainian people and the hard lot they were then enduring. 5
Whether Lesya Ukrainka was describing the burning sands of the Egyptian desert, the richness of nature in the Crimea, the coasts of the Mediterranean Sea or the factory districts on the outskirts of Genoa, she never failed to remember her Ukrainian people and the working man of her homeland. True to her democratic principles, the poetess showed that the forces of nature might be subordinated to man if his social community were free of self-interest, petty personal instincts, vulgar banalities, egoism and oppression. These ideas may be discovered to the fullest extent in the Forest Song. Part 2 In the summer of 1911, while living in Kutaisi (Georgia), Lesya Ukrainka began to write her Forest Song. Apparently, this creative intention had been long maturing in her mind, and the very name of the new drama speaks of its immediate closeness to folk song. Ukrainian song really was the life companion of the poetess. The well-known collector of Ukrainian folk songs, Kliment Kvitka, wrote in a preface to his Folk Melodies with Words by Lesya Ukrainka which was published during 1917 and 1918 after Lesya’s death: “Lesya Ukrainka took these songs most of all from the people of her beloved native parts in Volyn during her childhood and early teenage years.... When she was a small girl, probably about five years 'old, Lesya memorized several spring and dance songs.... After completing this collection, her illness entered its last and fatal phase. Thus it was that the works of her life began with folk song and, as time passed on, ended with folk song.” Lesya Ukrainka well knew the olden rites carried out on the eve of “Ivan Kupala” (Midsummer Night.— tr.), also the round-dance songs and children’s song-games. In an article entitled “Kupala in Volyn,” Lesya writes about the Ukrainian ritual songs and provides the note music for the melodies. At the end of the Forest Song, Lesya has provided the note music of Volyn folk melodies which she collected and arranged personally. Once again this speaks of the inseparable bond that links Lesya’s Forest Song with themes of folklore. In a letter to the scholar A. Krymsky, dated October 14, 1911, Lesya Ukrainka wrote: “I have only kind thoughts about the Volyn forests. Remembering them this summer, I wrote a ‘faery- drama* in their honour, and it brought me a great deal of happiness.” 6 In her Forest Song, Lesya Ukrainka provides a poetical description of nature in the Volyn district; she resurrects the magic world of Volyn fairy tales and beliefs. The poetess takes the reader into a forest grove inhabited by fantasticcreatures, both good and evil, who live their own mode of life. A meadow, forest clearing, shore of a forest pool or lake, tree branches-, hills and mountains - all are represented as incarnations of the vital life-giving forces of nature. The images of Ukrainian folk ’mythology come alive in the faery drama: nymphs of held and ГоУгЦ water-sprites, the wild or violent “Perelesmk or Forest-Demon, and “Vodyanik” (Forest-Pool King, >esse' S° "n inland waters); the “Lisovyk” or wood-goblin; the ^УАт (avenging black imps bringing bad luck); Koots (a dandified short-failed devil of the swamp, or satyr); the ‘ Poterchata (bastard babes drowned by their forsaken mothers who become incarnated as will-o-the-wisps [this translator calls them the Lost Children]; the Terrible Destroyer whom Lesya ca “He Who Breaks the Dams”-the Dam-Breaker, and finally the spirit of Death or “He Who Sits in the Rock -Lone Crag S‘Among the inhabitants of this mythical fantastic realm, there is a fascinating creature-the wood nymph or dryad. Mavka Lesya was familiar with this faery image rom hood. In her native parts, she often heard stones about “Mavkas” or dryads and she always remembered them. m» L,s,.-,V mother a,.«red he, that the fantastic images Of her Forest Song were evoked by the literary classics the poetess pointed out that it was not bookish influences that played the main role, but the colourful and sonorous elemen s of the ingenuous folk creations directly relating to Volyn. It seems to me,” said Lesya, “that I recalled our forests then and was homesick for them. And besides, I had long had this Mavka ‘on my mind,’ right from the time you told me about the mavkas in Zhaboritsya while we were walking.through some woods or other where the trees were small but rather dense in growth. Later on, in Kolodyazhne, I ran away from home one moonlit night into the forest (none of you ever knew bout that) and I expected I would manage to see a mavka there. And at Nechemny Pond, I dreamt of her when we spent the night there at old Leo Skulinsky’s place.... Apparently I was fated to write about her some time, and now for some reason or other ‘the right time' has come-I myself don’t exactly know why. Her image cast its spell upon me my whole life through. 7
The social topic underlying the Forest Song consists of the exposure of shallow personal morals, self-interest and sheer profit-seeking. Set against everything that is cheap and banal, there is a lofty creative enthusiasm, the thirst for happiness and real human joyousness. Mavka (the dryad) falls in love with the peasant youth Lukash, and saves his life. Lukash plays his reed-pipe and enchants Mavka. The forest “maid” discovers that in the human world there is much that is beauti¬ ful, noble and elevated. She leaves the fantastic forest creatures, to make her way in the world of man. But here Mavka finds bitter disillusionment. The rude human beings she is confronted with are alien and beyond her understanding. Her pure love for Lukash is insulted and profaned. His mother brings into her home the cheap and gaudy Kilina and marries her to Lukash. Then he loses his gift for music. Without Mavka, Lukash becomes a rough and dull fellow. But even so, Mavka cannot live without Lukash who has aroused in her the first tender emotion that draws her to people. Lesya Ukrainka unmasks all that is low and mean in people, but shows at the same time that bright and noble desires are not left unvalued, nor do they pass away without leaving a trace. As for Lukash, he cannot live in such a narrow and commonplace world — he runs away from the house where meanness and base instincts are the rule. Then once more, for the last time, he meets Mavka. But she is already doomed to die because she has lost Lukash. As if to give strength to the notion that not everything in the human world is worthy of condemnation, Lesya puts in the Forest Song the beautiful profile of old Uncle Leo, a man of wisdom and clear thinking who senses the powerful creative forces of Nature which he loves so passionately. His character is marked by positive qualities in sharp contrast to the negative features of Lukash’s mother and of his wife, Kilina — both without souls, greedy and selfish, pitiful in their spiritual poverty. Lesya brings out this contrast by the satirical colouring she gives their characters. Despite its great philosophic depths, this faery drama is not at all abstract — there are real living people in the cast: the Volyn peasants — Lukash, his mother, Uncle Leo and Kilina. Their dress and speech and outer appearance are all true to life and linked with Volyn where the action takes place. 8 Part 3 Lesya’s Forest Song, written in the reactionary period that followed the 1905 Russian uprising, exposed the narrowness of a purely material desire for personal gain, and poetized mankind’s lofty dream about happiness. The bourgeois nationalists strive to glide over and even conceal the revolutionary content of Lesya Ukrainka’s faery dramas, calling her a romantic poet retreating from the realities of the Ukrainian lifestyle into a world of either the past or of fantasy. This is purely malicious slander. Lesya lived according to the modern interests of her time and was under the strong influence of the most advanced ideas of the revolutionary working class — i. e. Marxism. On choosing historical, mytho¬ logical or fantastic plots for her creative writing, the poetess used them to express broad and artistic social and political generalizations. The first dramatic works of Lesya Ukrainka were linked with the tasks of an all-Russia or nationwide liberation movement: they were directed against reactionary and anti-popular tendencies. The national features underlying the Forest Song define the character and composition of this drama. Folk tales and legends inspired Pushkin to write his Ruslan and Liudmila and also his famous tales. The fantasy that flowed from Pushkin’s pen took on that basic reality which the poet so clearly expressed in his lines: Fairy tales may fib — but hint! They are good lessons for the young. In his Evenings on a Farm Near Dikanka, Gogol interwove with unusual artistry the real with the fantasies gleaned from sources of folk creativity. A. Ostrovsky based his dramatic fairy tale The Snow Maiden upon Russian folk sources — ritual songs, games and satires and others,— and thus created a potical hymn to the people’s wisdom, love of peace, and diligence. He brought out absolutely real human feelings and relationships, though the action is carried over into a certain fantastic kingdom or country of the “Berendey’s.” In Ukrainian literature, the artistic method of joining reality to fantasy is used by Taras Shevchenko in his ballads and by Hrihory Kvitka-Osnovyanenko in his novels. It is also used by Lesya Ukrainka, and by her contemporary Mikhailo Kotsyubin¬ sky who about this time was writing his Shades of Forgotten 9
Ancestors, which reflects the customs, tales, legends, songs and beliefs of the Hutsuls. Lesya Ukrainka, like her famous predecessors, also could not resist including real characters with those from fantasy. They freely exist side by side in her productions and influence each other, though the fantastic only underlines the real. However complex the composition of the Forest Song is, even more complex is the many-faceted finale of this faery drama. In essence, it is tragic: wise Uncle Leo dies, Lukash’s house burns down while he seems to have lost his mind and is marked for death. All the same, the finale of the Forest Song rings out passionately and energetically with faith in the deathlessness of Man as a creation, faith in the victory of the bright dawn over the dark forces born of the world of private property. Mavka dies, but her farewell soliloquy is permeated with the optimistic idea that man’s personal memorials are indestructible. The Forest Song in form and plot differs greatly from Lesya Ukrainka’s other dramatic works. Usually in such dramas or plays, the poetess employs the iambic pentametre in free verse joined with the rhymed verses of song and dialogue of her forest dwellers. Her poetry is very close to the Ukrainian folk song in length and rhythm. Alexandr Deich

16 PROLOGUE An ancient and heavily-wooded virgin forest in Volyn. In the centre, a large clearing with a weeping birch, and a huge age-old oak tree. The clearing is framed with peat hillocks and bulrushes, but in one place there is a bright green quagmire where a forest stream enters from the background and falls into a forest pool or lake. This stream runs from a grove of trees and moves out on the opposite side of the lake, twisting and winding through brushwood. The lake is placid and still, much covered with algae and water-lily pads, but with clear open water in the middle. It is a wild, mysterious place, but not gloomy — it is imbued with the tender beauty that is typical of Polissya. Early spring. On the edge of the forest and in the clearing, the first grass is sprouting green; snowdrops and anemones are in flower. The trees are still bare but covered with swollen buds on the point of uncurling green leaflets. Over the lake, a faint mist hovers which sometimes swirls in the wind, now concealing and now revealing the pale blue water. From the forest comes a sound as if someone is speaking; the little stream rings louder and louder like tiny bells. As it runs from the forest, with it comes the Dam Breaker in the form of a young merman, fair of skin with blue eyes. His movements are impetuous but graceful; his garment ripples with many colours ranging from dull yellow to bright blue, and gleams with golden sparkles. Plunging into the lake from the turbulent stream, he begins to swim in circles round the centre of the pool, agitating its sleepy waters. Then the mist fades away and the water grows more blue. Dam Breaker With quick bursts and sallies, from mountain to valleys, I break down the bridges, sweep dams and dyke ridges, all swamp-roads I’ve riven by sweat of man driven, for the spring water-flood — that’s spring-fever blood! (He stirs up the water even more, dives under and again surfaces, as if looking for something in the water,) 17 2 5—46
18 Lost Children (two small pale children, wearing white nightgowns, float up from beneath water-lily pads) First Child Why wander as if forsaken? Second Child Why sleeping babes awaken? First Child For our mother left us sleeping in soft beds while she was weeping, beds of sand or stone all mossy strewn with algae pale and flossy, lily-pads helped close our eyes while she sang us lullabies: “Bye-lo land will take you in, go to sleep, my babykin!” Second Child What noisy wrath you’re wreaking! First Child Who have you here come seeking? Dam Breaker That nymph or lady I loved when but a laddy — A water queen or princess: no world has seen her likeness. Through hills have I run, through vale, ravine and the glen — No better sweetheart is there Than your lake’s lady fair. I’ll make you waves alarming till I have found Miss Charming! (He whirls water round in the lake.) Lost Children (in chorus) Oh dear, don’t dive so deep! Let us our dwelling keep! Of cave-homes don’t bereft us, that’s where our mother left us. 19 2*
(Дзвінко сміється). 20 Our homes are poor and shabby: You see, we have no Daddy... (They take hold of his arms, imploringly.) Down in the deeps we’ll go where cold dark waters flow, down there an angler’s sleeping: the Nymph her vigil’s keeping... Dam Breaker Then let her leave him be! Let her come up to me! The Lost Children dive down into the lake. Come up, lady fair!! The Water Sprite surfaces with an enchanting smile, clapping her hands joyously. She wears two crowns: one large and green, the top one a small crownlet of pearls; below there ripples down a transparent veil. Water Sprite 0 my spellbinder, is that you? Dam Breaker (threatening) What’s going on there? Water Sprite (she pretends to throw herself toward him, but misses and swims farther away) 1 dreamt of you the whole night through, my little lord, what else to do! Shed tiny tears so frail, caught in a silver pail; without my loved one, clearly I filled a bucket nearly... (She splashes the water with her hands, opens her arms, and again rushes at him, and again swims past.) A gold piece dropped for trimming, which sent my tears a brimming! (Breaks into ringing laughter) 21
(З жартівливим пафосом). 22 Dam Breaker (sarcastically) So even in your slough, to gold you love to bow? The Water Sprite moves close to him, but he sharply turns away and swirls the water into a whirlpool. Dam Breaker For you it would be better to sit beside your angler, to see that sheat and crayfish don’t chew his hair too devilish: Poor man, your turtle-dove. And lo! one talks of love! Water Sprite (she swims close and takes him by the arm, looking into his eyes) To anger now you turn? (slyly) But I know something, lover-mine, you little devil saturnine! (She laughs softly, while he is embarrassed.) Where did you sojourn? Betrayed the Queen of Water: And for a miller’s daughter! Long winter nights — one sighs to gaze in a maid’s dark eyes. Young lords bring her buckets — not in vain — of gold ducats. (Threatens him with her finger, and bursts into laughter.) How well I know you, Your paltry soul I’ll show you! But I will yet forgive you, because it’s you I love! (With jocular inspiration.) 23
24 A whole long moment through, to you I will be true, one minute shall I be, caressing and subdued. Then drown my traitorous dove! No trace is left on water, from morn to night or after — thus, like your love for me, so be my grief for thee. Dam Breaker (fervently reaching out his hands to her) Peace flag unfurled! Merry-go-round the whirlpool world! Water Sprite (joins hands with his and quickly circles the pool with him) 0 I’m in whirlpool land-0 upon the yellow sands-O, 1 wear a pearly crown-O, dance with my love around-O! Ho! Ho! They splash and dance around. The water breaks against the shores so hard that the sedge grasses rustle loudly, and the waterfowl rise from the reeds. The Forest-Pool King (Vodyanik — one of the lesser deities of waters) appears in the middle of the lake. He is an ancient-looking and gray-haired man. His long hair and long white beard, entwined with water-weeds, hang down to his waist. His clothing is the colour of the brown silt in the depths, and he wears a crown of shells. His voice is dull but strong. Pool King Who is it that disturbs our quiet water? Water .Sprite and Dam Breaker stop and spin away, helter-skelter. A water princess! Shame upon you, daughter! In mad dance whirling with a stranger! Shameless! 25
26 Water Sprite But he’s no stranger, Dad. You do not knowh.m? Dam Breaker he is called. PoolKing Well do I know him! No kin to us, though of the water family. He’s shifty, deeply cunning in his nature; runs wild in springtime, rends in playful guise. He gathers from the lake the best of flower which all year round our water sprites do foster. He scares the wildfowl, birds alert and wise; exposes roots of widowed pussy-willow, and in the poor Lost Children s candle-holders pours water, so their willow-the-wisps have^^ he spoils my lakeshores orderly and neat, the peace of my old age he often ruins. In summertime, where is he? Gallivanting, all while the pitiless Sun my water drinks, my goblet empties — vulture-like regaling, And while the reeds from thirst are fading left high and dry upon the lonely shoreline; And while, in dying, water-lilies sink their wearv heads toward the pool’s warm J water: Where is he then? As these words are spoken, the Dam Breaker nods at the Water Sprite, tempting her to run away with him down the forest stream. Dam Breaker (with a barely concealed smirk) Old man, I’m then at sea. For Ocean calls on me to render aid so that the Sun can’t drain his giant goblet. And if the Sea King calls, one must obey him. You know the calls of Duty — none dare gainsay them. 27
28 Pool King Aha! Then you’re at sea... But as for me, without the help of one of my companions, the Autumn Rain, an old friend true and loyal, I’d perish, turn to vapour! Unnoticed, the Dam Breaker hides under the water. Water Sprite Oh, Daddy! Cloud vapour cannot perish, for from clouds the water’s born again. Pool King Oh, what a smarty! Go down below! Enough of chitter-chatterl Water Sprite In just a minute! He’s no longer here. I’ll first comb tangled weeds, all tatters. (She takes a comb of shells from her belt and combs the shoreline weeds.) Pool King (to Water Sprite) Well, comb away! I’m also fond of neatness. Comb on, comb on! And I’ll wait here for you until you finish working. Straighten out the lily-pads so they lie flat and even, and make that algae-rug again look pretty which your globe-trotter trampled. Water Sprite All right, Daddy. The Pool King settles down in comfort among the reeds, his eyes at first following the Water Sprite’s work but gradually starting to close. Dam Breaker (surfacing, whispers to Water Sprite) Go hide where willows gather, Water Sprite hides herself, glancing back at the Pool King. 29
ЗО and we’ll swim off together, down tributaries where mill-race fast scurries, break dams so they totter and drown the miller’s daughter! (He grabs Water Sprite by the hand and races swiftly across the lake. Not far from the opposite shore, Water Sprite stops and screams out.) Water Sprite I’m caught upon some oak of yesteryear! Awakened, the Pool King hurls himself between them and catches Water Sprite. Pool King So that’s your game! You wicked cursed betrayer! You know how to seduce our water maidens! Unto your Mother, I’ll complain of you — the Mountain Blizzard. She’ll teach you a lesson! Dam Breaker (laughing) But I’ll be far away before that happens! Farewell, dear Sprite. Weep brimming buckets! (He dives down the forest stream and vanishes.) Pool King (to Water Sprite) Go down below! Don’t dare emerge from there for three whole moonlit nights, to take the air! Water Sprite (protesting) Since when, please tell, were Water Sprites turned into the prisoners of this lake? I’m free, I tell you! As free as water runs! Pool King In my demesne, flood waters know how far ashore to go. Go down below! 31
Водяник Ти знов своєї?! 32 Water Sprite Don’t want to! Pool King You won t go? Then give me back your pearly crownlet! Water Sprite Noi The Prince of Seas himself gave me this present. Pool King You have not long to wear that pretty crownlet. For disobedience you’ll be taken by the Sitter on Lone Crags. Water Sprite (in fright) ^ no, dear j)a(jdy, I’ll be obedient! Pool King Then, get below. Water Sprite (gradually sinks into the water) I’m going, I’ll go... And may I seek amusement with the angler? Pool King If such you call amusement! Water Sprite slips down till the water covers her shoulders and looks up at her father with a rueful smile. How odd a daughter! You are all I care for. But he would have despoiled you, and forever. He’d drag you over stony thorny channels of river beds; wear out your pretty body till you were maimed — then throw you out upon some shore deserted. W ater Sprite . Yet, he was so charming! Pool King The same old song? 33 3 5-46
WaterSprite No, no, I m going down. (Dives below.) Pool King (glancing up at the sky) Already spring, and how the sun is burning.... Can’t breathe! I must find coolness, down returning. (Also dives below.)
38 ACT ONE The same setting: except that springtime is more evident. The edge of the forest is deep in fresh green grass, while here and there green leaves have opened on the treetops. The lake seems larger, more filled with water, and the green shores are interwoven with purplish-red flowers or meadow-sweet. The grass and flowers of the shoreline somewhat resemble a wreath. Uncle Leo and his nephew, Lukash, enter the clearing from the woods. Leo is already an old man, dignified in bearing and very kind looking. He wears his white hair shoulder-length (Polissya-fashion) and on his head is a typical gray felt square-shaped hat. Leo is dressed in light-gray homespun clothes, almost white in colour. He wears bast shoes laced above the ankle. He holds a fishing-net; a knife is stuck in his wide belt. A “torbo” or oblong bast-plaited (wicker-work) basket or knapsack is strapped over one shoulder. Lukash is a young peasant youth: handsome, black-browed and well-built. His eyes still have the naive clear look of a child. His clothing is also of homespun, but the material is finer. His long embroidered shirt has a fold-down collar with a slit at the neckline. It is belted with a red sash; both the collar and sleeves of his shirt are fastened with red buttons. He carries no bundle, wears a wide-brimmed straw hat, and at his waist is a knife in a scabbard made of limewood bark. Lukash stops at the shore of the lake. Uncle Leo What are you stopping there for? There you cannot do any fishing. Shallow water — marshy. Lukash I only want to make myself a reed-pipe: the water reeds just here are very good. Uncle Leo Why, as it is you have too many flute-pipes! Lukash A lot you think? Of guelder withe, and willow, and limewood too ■— but that is all. I wish for a real good reed-pipe, made of reeds or rushes: it plays the sweetest! 39
40 Leo Well, enjoy yourself then. This is God’s day of rest. But from tomorrow we start to build, put up a house. It’s time to bring the cattle here for pasture. Look you, just see how yonder all the grass grows greener. Lukash How can we settle in a place enchanted? The people tell us: Unclean spirits live here... Leo Depends who comes here. I know well, my nephew, just how to get along with this or that one: when to cross myself, or where to aim the ash stake, or simply spit three times, and that’s sufficient. We’ll sow the magic poppy round the house, and round the doorway plant the gentian flower: and then no unclean spirit dare come near us.... Well now, I’m off; and you do what you want to. They go their different ways: Lukash down to the lake where he becomes hidden in the rushes; but Uncle Leo passes along the shore and also soon disappears beyond the willows. Water Sprite (swimming along the shore, cries out) Grandaddy! Wood Goblin! There’s trouble! Save us!, Wood Goblin (a tiny bearded old man, serious looking and quick in motion; he wears clothing the colour of tree-bark and a furry marten-skin cap) What’s wrong with you? Why do you scream? Water Sprite Some fellow is cutting reeds to make a flute! Wood Goblin Indeed! That’s all your trouble! You miser’s seed. 41
42 Right here, a house some people may be building — if they don’t choose green wood, why then, I’m willing. Green wood would quickly warp. Water Sprite Good grief, a dwelling! And people living here? Ah me, these creatures live under roofs of straw! Beyond endurance! I hate that straw whose smell is its worst feature. I’ll drown them all, let water wash that essence of straw which I so hate. I’ll tickle them to death, if they should come! Wood Goblin Hold on! Don’t hurry. For Uncle Leo in that house will settle: he’s our good friend. And only as a joke he scares us with the aspen and the gentian. I love old Leo. If ’twere not for him, our aged oak would long ago be finished. That oak has witnessed all our rites and dances, Knows all the forest’s greatest mysteries. Once Germans measured all its girth, three persons took places round it, stretched out their arms, their fingers barely met. They offered money — in silver thalers, coins most dear to humans. But Uncle Leo swore that while he lived he would not let them cut it down, not ever. Then even I gave oath upon my beard, that Uncle Leo and his family would ever be secure within our forest. Water Sprite Indeed! My father then will surely drown them. Wood Goblin Let him but try this thing! For I’ll destroy your lake with last year’s leaves that lie here rotting. 43
How dreadful! Ha, ha, ha! (Vanishes far into the lake.) The Wood Goblin, muttering, lights his pipe and sits on a fallen log. From the rushes he hears, the voice of the reed-pipe (Pipes of Pan), soft and full of trills (Folk Song Tunes: 1, 2, 3, 4). And as the music grows louder, the forest becomes alive: first on the pussy-willows and the alders appear the catkins; then the birch leaves rustle. White lilies open their buds on the lake and the golden water-lilies spread their petals on the green lily-pads. Tender pink buds appear on the bushes of the wild briar rose. From old hollow trunk of a pussy-willow tree, split open and partly dried up, steps the dryad Mavka in a bright green dress. Her black hair with a greenish sheen hangs loose and flowing. She stretches up her arms and rubs her eyes with a hand, as one does upon awakening from sleep. Mavka How long I’ve been asleeping! Wood Goblin Long, my daughter! Anemones have almost finished blooming. The cuckoo’s on the verge of calling Shrovetide and, in his high red boots, is dressed and ready to call the years each man has yet to live. In skeins the feathered flocks are now arriving: With yellow puffs of down, wild ducks are swimming on waters clear, their puffball babes admiring. Mavka But who awakened me? Wood Goblin Who else, but Spring? Mavka But never in the past did Spring start singing sweet as today. Or am I simply dreaming? Lukash plays again on his reed-pipe. (Tune 5.) 45
46 Mavka No... Wait... There! Hear it? Is it Spring that’s singing? Lukash, now near by, plays Tune 5. Wood Goblin Well no, some country boy plays on his Panpipe. Mavka But who? Can it be he who breaks the dams? I never heard such tunes from him before! Wood Goblin No, this one’s human, Uncle Leo’s nephew. His name is Lukash. Mavka I don’t know the fellow. Wood Goblin First time he’s been here. Comes from far away. He’s none of ours, he comes from pinewood forests where once our Grandma liked to spend the winter. But he’s part orphan with a widowed mother. So Uncle Leo took them in, from pity.... Mavka I’d like to take a look at him, just once. Wood Goblin Why should you look at him? Mavka He may be handsome! Wood Goblin To meet a young fellow born of human beings is dangerous for maidens of our forest... Mavka Oh, how severe, Grandaddy, you’re becoming! And would you hold me, too, the way the Pool King holds Water Sprite, by power? 47
48 Wood Goblin No, dear child, I do not hold you back. That Water King’s so used to pulling down into his quagmire all things alive — no shred of mercy. I am used to honour freedom. Play with breezes, have fun with red Wood Demons, if you want to. All powers of the Wood, powers of the Mountain, powers of Air and Water are for your amusement. Beware the paths of human beings, honey! No freedom there — you shall but bear the burden Grief. Avoid those paths, my Bonny, one footstep take and — Freedom’s lost for fair! Mavka (laughing) How can it be, that Freedom melts in air? Should winds die suddenly — there’s no despair! Wood Goblin wants to say something in reply, but Lukash appears with his reed-pipe. Wood Goblin and Mavka hide. Lukash wants to cut the birch with his knife to drink the sap, but Mavka darts up and grabs his arm. Mavka Don’t touch! Don’t touch! Don’t cut! Don’t kill the tree! Lukash What are you saying, girl? I’m not a robber. I wanted just a little sip of birch-sap, to try for taste. Mavka Don’t do it! It’s her blood! Don’t drink the blood of my own sister dear! Lukash You say this birch tree is your own dear sister? Who are you then? Mavka I’m Mavka, forest nymph. 49 4 5-46
Лукаш (зовсім засоромлений) Ет, таке питаєш!.. 50 Lukash (watches her, not so much from surprise, but with close attention) That’s who you are! I have heard from old folk of Mavkas more than once, but never saw one since I was born. Mavka But did you wish to see? Lukash Who wouldn’t want to? Well, but you are just the same as any girl.... Yet no, more like a lady — your hands are very white, you’re very slender* and you are dressed quite different from our fashion... Why then, are not your eyes a greenish colour? (Looks closer.) Oh no, now they are greenish... but they were grayish like clouds above us... No, they’re black, I swear it! Or brown, or hazel... You are truly strange! Mavka (smiling) And am I beautiful? Lukash (shyly) But how should I know? Mavka (laughing) 50 who else would know? Lukash (completely embarrassed) Oh, what things you ask me! 51 4*
52 Mavka (very surprised) То ask such questions, why is it not fitting? Look there! The Wild Rose sings her little ditty: “So I’m very pretty?” The ash tree nods his crown, but not from pity: “World-wide, the most pretty!” Lukash I never knew that they could talk together. Always thought that trees were dumb, and could not hear. Mavka Our woodland has no deaf and dumb whatever. Lukash You’ve always lived within this woodland here? Mavka Since I was born, I never left its borders. Lukash How long have you lived in this world? Mavka Oh, dear! I truly never gave a thought to that... (Thoughtfully.) I think I’ve always lived, year after year... Lukash And yet looked just the same as you do now? Mavka It seems to me — the same... Lukash Your family? Or have you none at all? Mavka I have a family. Wood*Goblin’s one — I call him my Grandaddy; and he calls me “my child” or else “my Bonny.” Lukash Which is he — Dad or Grandad? 53
54 Mavka That is funny. Don’t know, but does it matter? Lukash (laughing) Strange, you creatures that live in forests! Who do you call Mother, or Grandma, or what name d’you call them by? Mavka I think at times yon pussy-willow tree, so old and dried-up, is my only mother. She gives me shelter in the wintertime; inside she makes a bed of deadwood powder for me to lie on. Lukash There you spend the winter? What do you do the whole long winter through? Mavka Why, nothing. Only sleep. What else in winter? The pool’s asleep, the forest, rushes, too. The pussy-willow soughs: “Go fast asleep...” And white dreams drift to me so soft and deep: like silver, shine pure semi-precious stones, frost-strewn where grass and flowers unknown, lie white and sparkling.... Silent rain of stars fall down from skies — white as scimitars — and sink into the snowdrifts.... White and pure the snow builds up marquees. With bright allure hang strings of crystals, gleaming everywhere... I sleep, but freely breathe the diamond air. And rosy thoughts fill all my dreaming, embroidering with garlands, lacy seeming, and weaving azure-golden patterns fair in winter’s calm: no summer madness there.... Lukash (listening with delight) What things you speak of! Mavka Do you like to listen? Lukash nods to show that he does. 55
56 Mavka Your panpipe speaks of better things than I. Come play for me! And I shall swing a while. Mavka plaits and joins together some long branches of a golden willow, sits upon them as in a swing, and rocks quietly back and forth as if in a cradle. Lukash plays his panpipe (Tunes 6, 7 and 8), leaning against the old oak tree, and never takes his eye off Mavka. He plays spring tunes and, listening, Mavka begins to hum along with him (Tune 8). Mavka O how sweet his playing, like the deepest sighing, feel my breast will soon be breaking, for my heart is waking! To the music of the spring songs, the cuckoo calls in answer, then the nightingale joins in. The wild rose blushes deeper, and the snowball flowers turn whiter. The white hawthorn bush turns a shy pink, even the black leafless blackthorn puts forth tender blossoms. Mavka, enchanted, quietly swings, smiling to herself, and in her eyes appears a longing that brings tears. Lukash notices this and stops playing. Lukash Are you weeping, girl? Mavka I’m really weeping? (Touches her eyes with one hand.) It’s true... But no! The evening dew comes seeping when Sun is setting. Look, the mists now hover and rise above the lake.... Lukash It’s still too early! Mavka You wouldn’t like it, if the day is over? Lukash shakes his head to show he wouldn’t. But why? 57
Lukash My uncle to the village calls me. Mavka But you would rather stay with me? Lukash nods in agreement. Mavka Oh, look you! You talk just like the ash tree, with your nodding. Lukash (laughing) I guess I’ll have to learn to talk like you do, for I’ll be living here this summer. Mavka (with joy) Truly? Lukash Tomorrow we’ll start putting up a dwelling. Mavka Put up a little hut? Lukash Perhaps a cabin, Perhaps a house, a big one. Mavka Just like birds do: they make a fuss to build a nest to live in, and then abandon it. Lukash We build to last for a lifetime. Mavka For a lifetime? You just said that you were only going to spend the summer. Lukash (in embarrassment) Well, I’m not sure.... Uncle Leo told me he’d give me land here and a house to live in, for in the fall I’ve got to marry someone.... 59
60 Mavka (alarmed) Who? Lukash I don’t know, my uncle never told me. So far, perhaps, he hasn’t found a girl. Mavka Can you not find yourself a girl to suit you? Lukash (looking at her) Perhaps I’ve found a girl... Mavka Who? Lukash Never mind.... He plays on his panpipe a very plaintive tune (No. 9), then he lowers the flute and is lost in thought. Mavka (breaks the silence) How long do married people live together? Lukash For good and all. Mavka The same as with the dove.... I often watch them bill and coo; so tender and sweet they show their love... I never knew such tenderness, except the simple love the birch tree gives, my only sister true; but she is far too sad, and so forlorn; so wan she is and bent beneath her sorrow, I often cry when she is in my sight. The alder I don’t like — she’s full of scorn. The aspen frightens me, she’s all a-shiver — afraid of her own shadow day and night. The oak is far too pompous. Very quarrelsome is the wild rose — and the hawthorn and the blackthorn. 61
А де ти? 62 То ash tree, maples all — their pride is dear. The snowy guelder-rose, her beauty flaunting, believes in all the world she has no peer. I think I felt the same but yesteryear, but now I’m sorry, for my thoughts are haunting... If they are true, I am within this forest utterly alone. (Mavka is lost in her sad thoughts.) Lukash But recently, you named as mother that old willow tree. Mavka That tree? It’s good to spend the winter there; in summer... see how dried-up she has grown, creaks all the time, and dreams of wintry air.... No, I’m utterly but utterly alone.... Lukash There’s more than trees within this forest zone— here many creatures live, their plans pursuing. (Somewhat sarcastic.) So don’t pretend! We’ve heard about these doings, about your dances, tricks, and gallant wooings! Mavka All that is simply like a whirlwind blowing — strikes suddenly, but just as quick in passing. Our ways are not like human folks: long lasting! Lukash (moving closer) D’you wish they were? Suddenly hears Uncle Leo calling him. Voice Lukash, yoo-hoo! Yoo-hoo, yoo-hoo! Where are you? 63
64 Lukash (responding) Here, I’m coming! Voice Then make it fast! Lukash Why is he so impatient? (Calls back.) I’m coming! Com-ing! Mavka (starts walking) But you’ll be back? Lukash Don’t know. (He goes into the shoreline brushwood.) Rushing from the forest groves comes the woodland Red Demon: he is a handsome fellow dressed all in red; with red curly hair that looks all windblown, with black brows and gleaming eyes. He wants to embrace Mavka, but she slips away. Mavka Don’t touch me now! Red Demon But why is that? Mavka Be off! You go and see how green the fields are growing. Red Demon What is the greening grass to me? Mavka ’Cause there your Meadow Fairy in the rye is waiting. Already making you a wreath of brightest green, with flowers is she plaiting. Red Demon I’ve long forgotten her. 65 5 5-4G
66 Mavka Forget me, too. Red Demon Now stop your joking! Come, let’s fly away! I’ll take you to the mountains green and hoary— you wished to see the firs in all their glory. Mavka But now I don’t. Red Demon No? Now why is that? Mavka I’ve changed my mind. Red Demon Such crazy raving! What made you change your mind? Mavka I’ve lost my craving, Red Demon (twirling round her in flattery) Fly, come fly to mountains! There find demonesses, mountain maids, my sisters, meteor-like their passes in a round-dance whirl in fairy-ring of grasses — look like lightning flashes! We will find in bracken, bloom of secret flower, choose for golden spangles — stars from sky-born shower, on the snowy highland, we’ll imprint the summer with spell-binding philtre. Forest crown I’ll win you, so you be a princess, soon the Dragon-Queen’s throne, surely you’ll possess; then we’ll turn Stone Mountain into our own fortress! Be my love! Adorning you both night and morning, I shall bring you jewels 67 5*
68 for royal dress and revels; lovely wreaths concede you, in the dances lead you, and on wings I’ll speed you to far seas of crimson, where the sun is setting, golden halo trailing, into secret deeps. Then we’ll find a window, see the stars curvetting, while Star-Weavers give us cloth of silver netting, we’ll embroider this with velvet shades for sleep. Then, when dawn comes creeping, and white clouds are floating in the skies above us, as if sheep were flocking, drinking from the stream where shallows lie across it, we shall seek repose on couch of flowers... Mavka (impatiently) Stop it! Red Demon Why thus interrupt me, and with such ill-humour! (Sadly but with slyness.) Have you then forgotten all about last summer? Mavka (indifferently) Oh, last summer, look you, long ago was over! Songs then sung to lover, winter’s sleep will cover! I’ve forgot their content! Red Demon (stealthily reminding her) Oak woods too, so ancient? Mavka Then I looked for mushrooms and the berries wild... 69
Де?..» 70 Red Demon Didn’t seek my footprints, wandering beguiled? Mavka I sought only hop-flowers, sweet and heady-scented, Red Demon Not to make my bed up, all so richly fragrant? Mavka No, to interweave them through my long black tresses! Red Demon And you looked for, maybe, charm of love’s embraces? Mavka No, my birch tree rocked me like a sweet companion. Red Demon But you see... I’m certain... Weren’t you fond of someone? Mavka Ha, ha, ha! Why ask me! Ask the forest trees. I’ll go look for king-cups to adorn my hair! (She goes into the forest.) Red Demon Oh, watch out! The cooling dews are sparkling there! Mavka Here come breezes gay, sunbeams start to play, driving dews away! (She disappears in the forest.) Red Demon Wait a bit — Oh, my! With you gone, I’ll die! Where, oh where, are you? He also runs into the forest. Here and there among the trees flash his red garments and, like a lunatic, he keeps crying out: “Where are you, where?” 71
72 The red rays of the sunset play throughout the forest, and fade away in the distance. Over the lake a. white fog has arisen. Uncle Leo and Lukash enter the clearing. Uncle Leo (angrily muttering) That blasted old Pool King! I hope he’s beached! No sooner got my catch, and started rowing across the lake’s deep water, for I preferred to reach the other shore — when he, that Devil, grabbed the bottom with his dirty paw — and I was stuck! Bit more, and he’d have drowned me! But I’m no fool — I grabbed his long white beard and wrung it like a hank of spinning yarn, then pulled my knife from out my belt — by God! I would have cut it off! But that cursed Satan jerked hard! — And then the boat turned over. I hardly made it to the shore, still living. Lost all the catch of fish! May he drop dead! (To Lukash.) And something even caught you here, it looks like — I yelled and hollered, yelled — thought you were lost. So where’d you get to? Lukash Why, nowhere. I was here, and made my pipes of Pan. Uncle Leo You took your time to do it, nephew — simple pipe of reeds! Lukash (embarrassed) But what else, Uncle... 73
74 Uncle Leo (smiles and talks more kindly) Eh? Don’t start off lying! You’re still too young! The tongue can do much mischief! You’d better gather brushwood in the forest and build a campfire here — to dry my clothing. For how can I go home in this condition? Till we get there, again that one will rush us — best not speak*of the devil here — Be off! — for then she’ll give my soul a right good shaking... Lukash goes into the forest; a bit later he hears the crack of dry branches. Uncle Leo (sits under the oak tree on a thick root and tries to strike a spark with his tinder box to light his pipe) Indeed! Flint won’t strike! The spunk’s wet through... The tinder’s done for.... Hope that devil dies of marsh malaria...! Wonder if there’s new spunk on this oak tree? (He feels round the oak, searching for spunk, a dry fungus.) From the fog over the lake appears a White Figure, a woman’s, but more like an apparition than a human being. She reaches out long white arms, avariciously curving her slender fingers, and moves towards Uncle Leo. Uncle Leo (terrified) Ghost or a vision? Aha! I’ve guessed it. Lucky thing I saw it! (Pulling himself together, Uncle Leo takes from his purse some roots and herbs and holds them out toward the oncoming apparition, as if to defend himself. The vision slightly retreats. Then Leo begins to recite aloud, a sort of incantation, speaking faster and faster.) 75
76 Pincher-and-trickster! Fever-giver, demon-siren! Get back into your hillocks green, in the swampland, where people never go, where cocks will never crow, nor my voice raise an echo. To come here you’re forbidden: no soul nor body weaken, no yellow bones to sicken, no blackened blood be drunken, no life here will you shorten. Wormwood — that’s for you: Shoo, ghoul, shoo! The vision retreats far into the lake and melts in the fog. Lukash comes into the clearing with an armful of kindling wood. He drops it before his uncle and takes out his tinder box to start a fire. Lukash Sit closer, Uncle, and warm up. Uncle Leo Thank ’ee, nephew, for looking after your old uncle. (Lights his pipe from the fire.) Well, things look better now! (He stretches out on the grass beside the fire, putting his knapsack under his head, and smokes his pipe, staring at the fire with half-closed eyes.) Lukash Oh, Uncle Leo, suppose you tell me a story. Uncle Leo There! Still a baby! Which one would you like? Okh-the Miracle-Maker? Once Lived Three Sons? Lukash I’ve heard them both! You know a lot of tales that no one else has heard of. 77
78 Uncle Leo (after thinking a while) Well then, listen! I’ll tell about the Princess of the Waves. (He begins the story in a quiet, sing-song rhythmic voice.) Should in our house by firelight sit kindly people, then we’d tell tales of glory or fairy story • till breaks the dawnlight... Way past the darkest forests, way past the deepest Big Sea waters, past mountain heights that gaze in hauteur, there is a wonderful magic land that’s ruled by Oura’s hand. No sun sets in that land, it’s always shining, The moon is never waning, The very stars walk fields, arrayed in gold, and round-dances hold. Now once the loveliest star of all by magic had a son — Palyanin Fair, with shining face and gentle grace, while breezes ruffled all his golden hair, and in his hands shone silver sabre bare... Lukash But what about the Princess...? U n c 1 e L e o Wait a bit! When Fair Palyanin put on years and grew mature, he started thinking how he could ensure his future — and a wife procure. “In all the world,” says he, “I am most fair but haven’t met my fate, my love to share. Star-Mother, counsel me on marriage: where seek a wife I won’t disparage: among the boyars fine, 79
80 among the knighthood line, where royal princes shine; or a common girl make mine? For as my princess dear, she’d also be my peer.” (Uncle Leo begins to doze off.) Once walking by blue seas that white surf hurls: he found upon the shore a necklace strung with pearls... Lukash Looks like, my uncle, you’ve forgotten something. Uncle Leo So what? Keep still and don’t you interrupt! — Then out of the sea surged a mountainous billow and from the crest flew a steed hard beset: like fire, like scarlet, and harnessed to fire-red chariot... and on the chariot... (He falls silent, at last asleep.) Lukash But who stood upon the chariot? The Princess? Uncle Leo What..? Where..? Who said a princess..? Lukash He sleeps, wool-gathering! (For some time Lukash gazes thoughtfully at the campfire, then rises and, moving farther away, he wanders about the clearing and quietly, almost inaudibly, plays his panpipe [Tune 10].) It is nightfall in the forest; however, the darkness is not deep but somewhat transparent as it usually is before moonrise. Around the fire, dapples of light and shadow seem to perform a fantastic ghost dance; close to the flames the flowers fitfully gleam with colour or vanish in the shadows. 81 6 5-46
82 On the edge of the forest, the trunks of the silver birch and ash trees glow with a pale mysterious light. The spring breezes sigh with impatience as they ramble through the brushwood before the forest and set swinging the branches of the weeping willows. The fog over the lake, in white waves, moves nearer the black thickets; the rushes exchange whispers with the sedge grass, melting into the mist. Mavka (a wood nymph or dryad) rushes out of the forest. She runs fast as if Runted; her hair streams out, her clothing is in tatters. She stops in the clearing and looks back, pressing both hands to her heart. Then she runs to the silver birch tree and stops again. Mavka Oh, many thanks to your wings, little spell-binder of night-time, that you hid my face, witching twilight time! Oh thanks, pathways dear, magic forest-rides, for leading me home where my birch tree bides! Hide and wrap me round, sister of mine! (She hides under the birch tree and embraces it.) Lukash (in a whisper, drawing near the birch tree) You’re Mavka? Mavka (in a lower whisper) Yes. Lukash Been running? Mavka Like a squirrel. Lukash Escaping? Mavka Yes. Lukash Who from?
(З сміхом і плеском кидається в озеро). 84 Mavka From someone who is like flaming fire. Lukash Where is he? Mavka Hush! Or he will come again. Silence. Lukash You’re trembling so! I hear the way your birch tree turns cold from fear and rustles as in pain. Mavka (she breaks away from the birch) How awful! I’m afraid to use her shelter, and I am falling. Lukash Then come and lean on me. I’m strong — I’ll hold you; now I will defend you. Mavka clings to him. They stand close together. The moonlight begins to spread through the forest, creeps across the clearing and peeps under the drooping birch boughs. Through the forest, one can hear the nightingales singing and all the voices of a springtime night. The breezes blow in long rapturous sighs. Out of the mist over the lake appears Water Sprite who secretly watches the young couple. Lukash, embracing Mavka tightly, gradually bends his face to hers — and suddenly kisses her. Mavka (crying aloud with a mixture of pain and happiness) Oh..! In my heart a star fell! Water Sprite Ha, ha, ha! (With laughter and splashing, she dives into the lake.) 85
Навіщо я сказав?!. 86 Lukash (terrified) What can that be? Mavka Fear not, it’s Water Sprite there. We are friendly — she will not do us harm. She’s simply playful, likes to fool around, but nothing matters now... for nothing matters in all the world! Lukash Me included? Mavka No, you’re all the world to me, more dear and lovely than that world I once knew. But even that one is lovelier since we our troth have plighted. Lukash But has our troth been plighted? Mavka Can’t you hear what merry songs the nightingales are singing? Lukash I hear them.... They’re no longer simply trilling or warbling as they did. Their songs are ringing: “O kiss me! O kiss me! O kiss me!” (He gives her long, tender, trembling kisses.) I could kiss you, kiss you to death! A whirlwind suddenly rises and a white light, like a snowstorm, dances madly across the clearing. Mavka But no, I cannot die... A pity...! Lukash What’re you saying? I don’t mean it! Why did I say that thing! 87
88 Mavka It would be lovely to die, just like a falling burning star... Lukash (he talks to her, caresses her) Stop it! Don’t talk about such things! I will not hear! Don’t say a single word! No, talk to me! Your words are music falling on the ear, so sweet to listen to.... Why don’t you speak? Are you angry? Mavka I am listening to you... your love declaring... (She holds his head with both hands, turns his face to the moonlight and looks deep into his eyes.) Lukash Don’t do that! I’m frightened whenever you look straight into my soul. I cannot bear it! Speak to me, or tease me, ask questions, say you love me, laugh to please me.... Mavka Your voice is clear as purest mountain stream, the eyes — I cannot see through. Lukash Maybe, moonlight is bad to see by. Mavka Maybe... (She droops her head on his breast and is motionless.) Lukash Are you tired? Mavka Hush! Let me but hear your heart...! Unclearly — so also speaks your heart, as vague as springtime night. 89
90 Lukash Why listen, then, unto my heart? No need to! Mavka You say, no need to? Then, no need to, sweetie! No need to, lover! I’ll not listen — ever, I shall not eavesdrop on your heart, my honey! I’ll but embrace you, my dearest lover! Have you embraced before? Lukash No lover’s passion has ever touched me. And I never knew love could be such a sweet sensation! Mavka passionately hugs him, and he utters a cry of delight in the throes of love. Lukash Mavka! You’re drawing out my soul! Mavka Drawing, drinking! I’ll drink your very soul, so fond of singing; enchant you with heart’s ease of words, so ringing... I’ll cover your sweet lips with many kisses, till burns desire, till they’re on fire, and blushing red as briar roses! I’ll put a spell upon your dear blue eyes, and set them dancing with lights entrancing, they’ll gleam with precious jewels like starry skies! (Suddenly Mavka clasps her hands.) But how could I enchant my lover’s eyes when I’ve no flowers for a wreath! Lukash Nonsense! You’re lovely without flowers to wear. 91
92 Mavka I want to be so decked with flowers for you, as rich arrayed as Princess of the Forest! (She runs to the other side of the forest glade, far from the lake, where flowers bloom on the shrubbery.) Lukash Wait for me! I’ll garland you with flowers too. (He goes towards her.) Mavka (sadly) At night they’re not beautiful — the bluebells all are sleeping.... Lukash Here are fireflies in the grass: I’ll catch a few, and they will glitter in your raven hair — you’ll look as if you wore a crown of stars. (He puts a few fireflies in her hair.) Now, let me see you... Oh, how beautiful! (Almost fainting with joy, he hugs her.) I must collect some more. I’ll adorn you, love, like any queen, with precious jewels! (He looks in the grass under the bushes for fireflies.) Mavka And I’ll break off a guelder-rose, lovelorn — she does not sleep, the nightingale awakes her. (She breaks off a twig with white snowballs to decorate her dress.) The Water Sprite appears once more out of the fog, and speaks in a whisper as she turns towards the rushes. Water Sprite Little lost ones, in your shelters, light your candles in the holders! 93
94 Two wandering willo’-the-wisps are seen twinkling in the rushes. These two Lost Children (Poterchata) move from the reeds, holding their candlesticks with glowing candles that keep flickering up brightly and then fading out. Water Sprite draws them close to her and whispers, pointing out the distant figure of Lukash who is scarcely noticeable in the darkness among the bushes. Look well at him, who wanders in the darkness: that man’s the same as your own father was, who did desert you, mother did deceive. Let his life pay forfeit. First Child Drown him, then! Water Sprite Not me. Wood Goblin banned the act for me. Second Child We can’t do it either: we are small and thin. Water Sprite You’re small and thin, like feathers spin, your candles glimmer bright and dim. Like weasels, you won’t make a din — so Wood Goblin will not hear, when you under bushes peer; and if he sights blinking lights, disappear! Over paths like fireflies Leap crosswise. Over peat-mounds light your fire, lead him down into the mire — where he’ll drown, sinking down, down into the bog forever.... Farther — I will then take over... Now! flick-flick! Lost Children (approaching each other) You go there, and I’ll go here, till we’ve lured him to the mire! 95
96 Water Sprite (joyously) They flicker! (She runs to the swamp, scooping up the water and throwing it behind over her shoulders. Jumping from behind a peat-mound, comes Koots — a young handsome faun.) Water Sprite Kootsie-kootsie, kiss your cutie! (She offers her hand and he kisses it.) Koots What’s that for, lady-fair? Water Sprite Ere the dawn, you will dine: I’ve prepared it for you. Don’t be asinine! (She points him out Lukash who is some distance away.) Koots (with a wave of the hand, as if it meant nothing) Till he’s in the mire — to drool I don’t aspire! Water Sprite Yours will be the boy. Your sweet wife and granny — will know delight and joy! Koots throws himself behind a mound and disappears. Water Sprite watches the Lost Children from the tall rushes — their will-o-the-wisp lights flicker up and die out, wink and flash, dancing here and there. Lukash (looking for fireflies, notices the lights) Those fireflies are beautiful! They’re flying! I’ve never seen such big ones. No denying! I simply have to catch them. (He chases after one, then after another. Unnoticed, they lure him into the quagmire.) 97 7 5-46
98 Mavka Let them be! Oh, darling, let them be..! They are Lost Children! They’ll take you to the mire! Lukash does not hear her. Carried away with the chase he runs off far from Mavka. Lukash (all of a sudden giving a scream) Help! I’ve fallen! I’m in the swamp-hole now! It pulls me! Down! Mavka runs up at his screams, but cannot reach him, for he is far out from the firm shoreline. She throws him one end of her belt and holds the other. Mavka Grab hold! Lukash stretches out his arms, but cannot reach the belt. Lukash Oh, cannot reach it! Must I drown? Mavka (runs to the old willow tree that leans over the quagmire) My willow tree, my mother, save him! (Fast as a squirrel, she climbs up the willow and along an overhanging bough; and again throws her belt to Lukash. This time it reaches him and he grabs it. Mavka pulls him toward her, then gives him a hand and helps him clamber onto the willow.) Water Sprite, in the reeds below, gives a hollow groan of disgust and vanishes in the mist. The Lost Children also disappear. Uncle Leo (awakened by the screaming) Eh? What is that? The vision has come back? Be off! It’s gone! (He looks around him.) Where are you, Lukash? Hey! 99 7*
100 Lukash (calling out from upon the willow) I’m here, dear Uncle! Uncle Leo . ^ Why are you up there? (He goes over to look at the willow.) Climbing trees — besides, with a maiden! Lukash leaves the willow, but Mavka remains above. Lukash Oh, Uncle, I fell into a swamp hole in the mire, and would have died for sure — she climbed the bole (points at Mavka) and pulled me out. She saved me. Uncle Leo Why did you then go rambling hereabouts like some lost soul? And at night-time! Lukash I was catching fireflies... (He breaks off.) U n c 1 e L e o (noticing the fireflies in Mavka’s hair) Bah! You should have said so. I’ve got eyes! And now I see myself, wherein truth lies. Mavka Dear Uncle, it was I came to the rescue. U n c 1 e L e o Amazing — “Uncle dear!” A niece, I ve found me. Who was it set the trap for him to fall in? (Shakes his head in reproach.) Ach! Brood of forest land! There’s no truth in you..! When I get hold of that Wood Goblin fay, 101
102 he will not get away; that oaken blockhead I’ll hold fast by the beard and give him something that he’ll not soon forget! Uses a maiden, and stands aside, and says: “It was not I!” Mavka (quickly running to him. from the willow tree) He is not guilty! May Serpent-Queen, if I tell falsehood, on me vent spleen! And I’m not guilty! Uncle Leo Well, now I believe ye — a big oath — spoken here, you’d not deceive me. Lukash She really saved me, Uncle, from the mire. I swear, I’d now be dead were it not for her! Uncle Leo Well, girlie, though you have no soul immortal, you have a good heart, surely. Pardon me, if I have loosed on you my rage. (He turns to Lukash.) And why then were you a-chasing fireflies in the bogland? They’re found beneath the bushes, are they not? Lukash The thing is, these were big and also flying! Uncle Leo Oho! So now I know! They were Lost Children! Now let them wait and see, I’ll bring tomorrow some wolfhounds here to hunt, and then we’ll see who yelps the loudest — wait! Voices of Lost Children (answering in pitiful croaking voices, very much like frogs) No, no, dear Grandpa! Not guilty, sire— We, in the mire, 103
104 for berries go. We could not know a human soul was nigh — so glowed from out the swamp hole... Oh, Mummy, woe! Flow on, tears, flow! Uncle Leo Just see how low they crawl, these two betrayers, both witch’s brood and offspring! Be it so — But I’ll find out who’s innocent, who’s guilty...! (To Lukash.) Is’t not, my nephew, time we started homeward? So let’s start moving. (To Mavka.) Best of luck, my girlie! Mavka Tomorrow, you’ll come back? I’ll show you where to find good timber for a dwelling fair. Uncle Leo I see you know already our intentions. Fast work! So meet us here, I’m used to you, and now you must get used to us, that’s sure. Let’s go, then. ’Bye for now! (He starts off.) Mavka (speaking more to Lukash than to Uncle Leo) I shall be waiting! Lukash drops behind his uncle and, taking both Mavka’s hands in his, he squeezes them silently and gives her a fleeting kissi, Then he runs to overtake his Uncle Leo. They go into the forest. Mavka (soliloquy) If you, sweet night, would swiftly be over! Look you, my night of love! Till now, I’ve never known such a time of joy and blessing 105
Глибока північна тиша, тільки часом легкий шелест чується в гаю, мов зітхання у сні. as you, dear night, have brought; like you, caressing! Why are you, birch tree, so sad and woeful? See, my dearest sister, I’m gay and joyful! Don’t weep, my willow, tears on the water— Be, little mother mine, kind to your daughter..! Dark forest father, ever my own! How shall I shorten this night so forlorn? Short is the night, but — parting pain borrows... What is foretold for me: joy or great sorrows? The moon hides behind the dark wall of the forest, darkness floods the clearing, darkness as black as velvet. Nothing can be seen except the dying embers of the deserted fire, and the crown of fireflies among the trees which shows ,where Mavka walks. Now the crown blazes like a whole constellation of stars, now it twinkles with only a few tiny sparks. But then the darkness covers even these things. The silence of deep midnight falls, and only at times in the forest one hears a faint rustle like the sigh of someone sleeping.
ACT TWO It is late summer. Here and there on the dark dull-green leaves in the forest lies the gold of autumn. The lake has shrunk, is shallow, and the shoreline brushwood is thicker; the reeds and rushes rustle dryly their sparse stems. On the clearing or forest glade, a cottage has been built, a garden or plot planted. On one side, one sees a strip of wheat, on the other — rye. Geese swim on the lake. Laundry has been hung to dry on the birch tree; the bushes are hung wi'th pots and pitchers. The grass in the clearing has been scythed to a stubble. A stack of hay is piled beneath the ancient oak. From the woods comes the ring of cow-bells where the cattle browse. Not far away tinkles out the sound of a reed-pipe — a rhythmic dance melody is played (Tunes 11, 12, 13). Lukash’s Mother (she comes from the cottage and calls out) Hey, Lukash! Hey! Where are you? Lukash (he comes from the woods with his panpipe, and a stick on which he has carved ornamentation) Mom, I’m here. L. M o t h er Now, haven’t you had your fill of playing the pipe? Just play and play, and do no work at all! Lukash What work, then, is there? L. Mother What d’you mean — what work? Who was it wanted to fence in a cattle-yard? Lukash All right then, Mom, I’ll build a fence — well, sometime. L. M o t h e r And when will that be, your forever “sometime”? All you can do is run throughout the swamps With that stray girl, with that strange intruder! ill
112 Lukash You call it running? I but herd the cows, and Mavka’s very helpful. L. Mother Should get rid of the kind of help she gives you! Lukash You said yourself that when she tends the cows they give much more at milking time. L. M o t h er And that is surely witchcraft! Lukash No way of knowing how to satisfy you! When we put up the house, who brought the timber? Did she not do it all? Your garden plot — who did the planting, sowed the wheat and rye? Outside this year, when had we such a harvest? Besides, such decorative flowers grow beneath the window — they delight the eye! L. M o t h e r You need no flowers of hers! And in our dwelling I have no girl for help, one you might marry.... Your head is stuffed with flowers and with songs! Lukash shrugs impatiently and wants to leave. You’re leaving? Lukash Just to fence a pen for cattle. (He goes behind the cottage, and soon comes the sound of his axe.) Mavka comes from the forest, richly adorned with flowers and with her long hair flowing loose. L. Mother (unfriendly) Why are you here? 113 8 5-46
114 Mavka Where is Lukash, Auntie? L. Mother Why do you bother him? It is not seemly for girls to chase the boys in such a manner. Mavka But no one ever told me it was wrong. L. Mother Well, listen once to me then: it won’t hurt you. (Looking at Mavka with unfriendly eyes.) Why are you always wild-like, never neat? You could at least comb out and braid your ' hair — you look just like a witch. Why, it’s not decent. What are those rags and tatters you have on? They are no good to work in, that’s for sure. I have some things inside — my late daughter wore them once, so go and choose some — they are on the clothes-rack. And those you wear, put neatly in the chest. Mavka All right. I’ll go and change, dress up a little. (She goes into the cottage. Uncle Leo comes out.) L. Mother She might have told me “Thank you”! Uncle Leo Really, sister, why are you always picking on the maiden? What has she done to you, the poor dear creature? L. Mother Now, brother, don’t butt in. You’d best be quiet for these things don’t concern you! You would like to bring all the witch-brood here from out the forest.
116 Uncle Leo То think I’d live to hear such talk from you, recalling, well, it’s either gossip or it’s.... “Witch-brood of forest” — where’s the witch in woodlands? In villages — there’s witches.... L. Mother It seems that you are a know-it-all... Entice them here, then, your pagans of the wood; they will not bring you mudi good, I think! Uncle Leo _T11. ., Why not? For I believe it. Those in the woods are far from pagans, sister all kinds of wealth come from the wood... L. Mother (mockingly) Indeedy! Uncle Leo Such girls become real folk — I’ll have you know! L. Mother Real human beings? You been drinking? Eh? U n c 1 e L e o You do not know this? My grandpa, now long dead, once told me: Only say the magic word and even forest maid can have a soul no worse than people’s, just like ours. L. M o t h er So tell me where her spirit — yoked to devil would get to then? Uncle Leo Again you’ll have your way? Better if I look for work to do than chew the cud with such a cow! L. Mother Be off! You think I’m holding you? 117
118 Leo goes behind the house, angrily shaking his head. Mavka comes out of the house in human dress: she wears a rough blouse, badly sewn, with pleats at the shoulders; a narrow skirt of homespun and a striped apron. Her hair is neatly combed and divided into two braids twisted in a coronet round her head. Mavka I’ve changed my clothing. L. Mother Well, well! That’s quite a change. Now I must go and see to all the chickens, for a while. I wished to go and work the field of hemp, for here there’s so much work — it’s never-ending — and you are not much used to it... Mavka Why can’t you? Whatever way I can, I’d gladly help you. L. Mother The trouble is there’s little you can do: you were a poor field-worker, any time. When making hay, you always have a headache... That’s so, but you might reap... Mavka (with fear) What’s that? Me? Reaping? You’d like it if I went and reaped today? L. M o t h er Why shouldn’t you? Is it a holiday? (She takes a sickle from behind the porch door and gives it to Mavka.) You take this si.ckle, try it. When I’m finished, I’ll come and take your place. (Lukash’s mother goes behind the house after taking a sifter of grain from the porch. Soon you hear her calling: "Chick, chick, here chickie, here chickie!”) 119
Lukash, axe in hand, comes from behind the house and goes over to a young elm tree to chop it down. Mavka Don’t touch it, lover, it’s still alive, you see. Lukash Ah, leave me be! I can’t waste time! Mavka looks sadly into his eyes. Lukash Show me, then, a dead one.... Mavka (swiftly drags a large dried-up tree from the forest.) I’ll find some more. You need a lot, now don’t you? Lukash What else? Think one’s enough to make a fence? Mavka Somehow... even you have turned unpleasant.... Lukash But, look you... Mother scolds me over you..! Mavka What does she want? And then... is it her business? Lukash But isn’t it? I’m her son.... Mavka Her son — so what? Lukash Look... such a bride as you would hardly suit her... Her kind don’t like the people of the forest... An unkind mother-in-law she’d be to you! Mavka No mothers-in-law exist within our woodland: 121
122 Why are there mothers-in-law? Or brides, at that — I cannot see it! Lukash Daughters-in-law are needed for help at home, you see — my mother’s old. To hire a stranger, and to make her labour would not work out.... a hired girl’s not a daughter... And truly, you could never understand it... To know about the cares and work of humans — that calls for someone not bred up in forests. Mavka (sincerely) You might explain it all. I’ll understand it, for I’m in love with you.... I know already all songs that you have played upon your flute. Lukash Ah, songs! Why, that’s an art of little matter. Mavka Do not despise the flower of your soul, for it gave birth to our dear love so holy! That flower, like the fern of woodland magic, CREATES a treasure far beyond all measure. It gave birth to a new heart deep within me... it seemed as if I knew it. That same moment a miracle took place.... (She suddenly breaks off.) Are you laughing? Lukash That’s right, for all this seems to me so funny.... There’s you — in everyday old-fashioned clothing — speech-making, just like holy incantations! (He laughs again.) Mavka (starts to struggle out of her clothes) I’ll burn them all! 123
124 Lukash So Mother scolds me more? Mavka What else to do, if in this way of dressing you think me changed! Lukash I knew it all the time! Now come the tears, regrets and hot reproaches.... Mavka Oh no, my love, I truly don’t reproach you, but I am... sad that you can’t make your life as lofty as your soul — they are not equal. Lukash I sure can’t figure out what you refer to. Mavka But look, I love you even more than ever for things that you yourself don’t know about, although your soul knows everything and sings them through that sweet magic voice of your small panpipe... Lukash And what are all those things? Mavka They are more lovely than your appearance, handsome though it be. And yet I cannot put them into words.... (She looks at him sadly and lovingly, and pauses a moment.) Oh play for me, my love, come play your panpipe and let it charm away all grief and trouble! Lukash Ah, I’ve no time at all for playing music! Mavka Then hug me, so I shall no more remember this conversation. 125
126 Lukash (looking around) Hush! My mother’ll hear you! She always says you throw yourself at me, intrude yourself.... Mavka (flaring up) So! None can understand you, unless they’re bred like you! Well, what does that mean — “to throw, intrude”? Is it because I love you? And I was first to say it? Is it shameful that my heart is so generous, reveals its sweet-treasured thoughts so freely, keeps no reckoning, but gives them to the one it falls in love with, nor waits for promises, love-declarations? Lukash But there was hope of some returns — well, later. Mavka Again queer words that can’t be comprehended — “some returns”.... You gave me presents of your free will, the same I did to you — not measuring, not reckoning... Lukash Well, that’s fine then, that neither feels indebted to the other. You said the same yourself, if you’ll remember. Mavka And will you tell me what I should remember? L. Mother (returns from behind the house) That’s how you reap. And that’s how you make the fencing? Lukash hurriedly drags the tree behind the house. If you, my girl, don’t wish to do the reaping, then I won’t force it on you. I shall do it 127
128 myself, somehow I will. And in the autumn, God grant, I’ll find a daughter-in-law to help me. A widow lives near by us — energetic — She brought the matter up, the neighbours told me. And I am for the marriage, just so long as Lukash wants it.... Well, I’ll have the sickle, if you don’t mind.... I haven’t any other. Mavka Oh no, I’ll reap. You go and pull the hemp. Lukash’s mother goes through the clearing to the lake and vanishes among the rushes. Swinging the sickle, Mavka bends over the rye. , But suddenly a Meadow Fairy appears: she wears a green dress that now and then flashes through openings in the mantle of golden hair that covers all her tiny figure. She wears a wreath of blue cornflowers, and in her hair there are flowers: pink roses, white daisies and some bindweed. Meadow Fairy (looking at Mavka with entreaty) Oh sister, have some pity! Don’t cut and spoil what's pretty! Mavka I have to. Meadow Fairy Already I am maimed and doomed, my flowers stolen or deplumed; my starry flowers lost, forlorn, are ripped away from out the corn! My poppies red as fire lay black and crushed in mire, as if their blood was spilled in sorrows and then grew caked upon the furrows.... Mavka O sister, I must reap! Your beauty fair will come again in Spring more rich and rare, but if my happiness should fade away — then dies my day! 129 9 5-46
130 і і Meadow Fairy (wringing her hands, she rocks with grief like a grain-ear caught by the wind) O grief and woe! My hair falls low! My golden hair that’s all a-glow! O tender face! Your grace soon goes! My youthful beauty melts like snow! Mavka Your beauty is not given as everlasting, It grows alone for harvest time’s repasting. In vain you beg a respite for to see, If I weren’t here, another then, would be. Meadow Fairy Look, sister mine, a wave like a swimmer plies through the rye. Let us live longer where breezes soft sigh, While the sweet summer still glimmers, while our dear lives are not mown to the ground, while the grim Reaper has not yet come round! Wait just a minute! A moment more’s due me! It will droop after, this poor thing — my beauty, fall by itself and be lost.... Sister, don’t be like the Frost, deaf to entreaty and deaf to all prayer! Mavka I’d give you freedom to spare, but that my own freedom’s caught in a snare. Meadow Fairy (whispers to Mavka, leaning on her shoulder) Sometimes, do accidents come unawares? Maybe the sickle slips, cutting an arm? Sister dear! See my alarm! Ransom me with a few blood-drops, no more, I swear! Beauty’s not worth it, the price is too dear? Mavka (cuts her arm with the sickle: the blood splashes over Meadow Fairy’s golden hair) There you are, sister, take cheer! 131 9*
132 Meadow Fairy curtsies to Mavka by way of thanks, and vanishes in the rye. Lukash’s mother approaches the house from the lake. She brings with her a plump-faced young woman dressed as follows: a red headscarf with fringed edges on her head; a full dark-red skirt gathered evenly into narrow pleats, over it a green apron decorated with red and yellow embroidery; a blouse covered with needlework designs in red and blue floss. On her plump white neck there tinkles a necklace of silver coins; a sash tightens and pulls in her waist. All this makes the young woman’s figure seem quite voluptuous. She walks with a swinging stride, and the old woman can hardly keep up with her. L. Mother (pleasantly, to Kilina) Walk here, beside the birch tree, dear Kilina, the grass is fresher, too. These are of wood — (showing crocks on bushes) you wished to scald out crocks for dairy usage? This one, my dear, is very good for milk. Kilina I’ve so much milk, I don’t know where to put it! If fairs would but begin — I’d buy utensils. I have a cow that’s bred of Turkish cattle — my poor late husband gave it me — Oh Lordy! a pure-bred dairy cow! I’ve got my grain in, I somehow managed that, and now, you see, a lot of housework must be done. Oh, Auntie! a widow’s lot — you tear yourself to pieces! (Kilina puts on an air of false modesty, and tightens her lips.) L. Mother Oh, deary me! You’ve got your harvest gathered? It’s just like people say: if one’s hard-working, she can do all.... We’ve just a bit of ground, but then, God helps those who help themselves.... Kilina (looking at the grain plot where Mavka is standing) And who is your reaper there? 133
L. Mother Oh, she is just an orphan... (lowers her voice) No good for work, God help me, good-for-nothing. K і 1 і n a (going over to Mavka with Lukash’s mother) Afternoon, my good maid! And how’s the reaping? L. Mother (clasps her hands) The vixen! Oh, she hasn’t even started! Oh, it’s my downfall! What have you been doing? You lazybones! You loafer! Good-for-nothing! Mavka (her voice sounds dull) I cut my arm, you see... L. Mother Excuses always! K і 1 і n a Well, give the sickle here! I’ll do it fast! Mavka hides the sickle behind her back and looks at Kilina with enmity. L. Mother Give her the sickle, d’you hear? It’s not yours! (She gets the sickle away from Mavka and gives it to Kilina. The latter rushes into the rye and reaps it so fast that it seems caught by fire, even the yellow stalks crackle as the blade goes through them.) L. Mother (satisfied) Look, that’s what I call working! Kilina (keeps working as she talks) If someone would bind the sheaves for me, then in a flash the harvest would be in. 135
136 L. Mother (calling out) Come he..re, Lukash! Lukash (he approaches and. greets Kilina) God save you! Kilina (keeps working) Thank you kindly. L. Mother Listen, Lukash, help out our guest, go bind the sheaves for her. Your pretty “helper” there has cut her arm. Lukash starts to bind the sheaves. Well, children, work away! And I shall go and make fruit jelly for an early tea... (She goes into the house.) Mavka retreats under the birch tree. She hides under its drooping branches, and through them peeps at the “harvesters.” Kilina reaps hard for a time, then straightens up, stretches to relieve her muscles, and looks at Lukash bent over the sheaves!. Then she laughs, reaches him in three long strides, and claps him on the back between his shoulders. Kilina Come on, boy, speed it up! Don’t be a slow-poke Oh, what a dope you are! (Laughs merrily.) Lukash (also stretches to limber up) How quick you are! You’d best leave me alone. I might hit back! Kilina (throws down the sickle and faces him, arms akimbo)
I’m ready... try! And who’s the best, we’ll see! Lukash throws himself at her, and she stretches out her arms to fend him off. They try each other’s strength by gripping hands and pushing hard. For a time, neither one makes any headway. It’s a deadlock. Then Kilina falls back, laughing and ogling him, pretending she is beaten. All flushed, Lukash releases her hand and tries to kiss her. But just as his lips almost touch hers, Kilina trips him up with one foot behind his, pushes, and he falls down. Kilina (standing over him, laughing) What now? Who won the fight? Me, or you? Lukash (gets to his feet, breathing heavily) You tripped me — that’s against the rules! Kilina So what! The sound of a door opening comes from the house. Kilina again starts reaping and Lukash ties the sheaves. The strip of rye is quickly and thickly covered with the sheaves, swaths of grain still lie on the ground, like conquered prisoners who are not yet tied up. L. M 0 t h e r (from the porch doorway) Come in, you reapers, dinner’s on the table! Kilina I’ve finished all my job, but Lukash here can’t manage to keep up. Lukash Won’t be much longer. L. Mother Well, hurry up. And you come in, Kilina! Kilina goes into the house. The porch and inner doors both close. Mavka comes out from under the birch tree. Lukash (a bit embarrassed on seeing her, but quickly controls himself) Oh, is that you! Come here and do the binding. Then I can go. 139
140 Mavka I cannot do the binding. Lukash Then why, please tell me, have you shown up here, if you don’t want to help us? (He resumes binding the sheaves himself.) Mavka Dear Lukash, don’t let that woman come here any more, I do not like her — she is crafty, sly as an otter. Lukash You do not even know her. Mavka Oh yes, I do! I heard her voice and laughter. Lukash That’s far too little. Mavka No, it’s quite sufficient. That woman’s greedy as a lynx. Lukash And what more! Mavka She’d better not go walking in our forest. Lukash (drawing himself up straight and tall) Since when did you become the Forest Queen with power to say who may go in the woods or may not? Mavka (gloomily, with a threat in her voice) There are deep pits within the forest concealed by bushes, covered with thick boughs — no animal can see them, nor man, nor woman, until they fall below... 141
142 Lukash And you still talk of her cunning, slyness — your own words betray you! I see that I was blind to your true nature. Mavka Perhaps I did not know my nature either... Lukash In that case, listen: if I have to ask your permission as to who comes here to see me and who not, then for me it would be better to leave the woods and move back to the village. At least, among my own folk I’d not suffer. To sit here like a fox trapped by your tricks — I’ve no intention. Mavka But for you no trap was put out — you came here by your own free will. Lukash I’ll leave by my free will, if I should wish to — Nobody keeps me here, and nothing ties me! Mavka But did I ever try to keep you here? Lukash Then what’s the purpose of this empty chatter? He binds the last sheaf and, not looking at Mavka, goes in the house. Mavka sits down on top of a high furrow which rises above the stubble left after the reaping. She is lost in sad thoughts. Uncle Leo (comes from behind the house) What makes you look so sad, my poor dear creature? Mavka (quietly and mournfully) The summer’s over, Uncle dear.... Uncle Leo All this is 143
(Стоїть, смутно похилившись на ціпок). 144 so bitter for you, child... I imagined you would not need your willow for the winter. Mavka But where else could I spend it? Uncle Leo As for me, the house would not seem crowded, if you lived there... If I had known my sister’s nature better, I’d not have asked her here to live. I’ve argued this way and that, you see... But if I was the master here, I’d not need her agreement. I gave them, though, the right for land and cottage. So now I have no say. And I myself will go back to the village. I’ve a house there... If you can settle in a village, I’d be so glad to take you in. Mavka Oh no, I cannot... But if I could, I’d go. How good you are. Uncle Leo Praise bread that’s offered, child; not man, the giver. But one thing’s true: I’ve taken such a liking to all the forest people, when comes my time to die then like the beasts I’ll seek the forest. So let them bury me beneath that oak tree... Ah, oak of mine, will you be standing there when my gray head is finally laid low? Oh no! Though even oaks like this keep standing, yet still they are cut down.... And you stay green until the frost comes, friend, with leafy crown, and then... who knows if God will let us see the springtime? (He stands still, sadly leaning on his walking-stick.) 145 10 5-46
146 Mavka slowly gathers up some half-faded meadow flowers out of the rye stubble and arranges them in a bouquet. Lukash, his mother, and Kilina come out of the house. L. Mother (to Kilina) Why all the hurry, dear? You could stay longer! Kilina Oh no, dear Auntie, it’s time for me to go. Just look how late it is — and I am frightened. L. Mother Now, Lukash, see her home. Lukash Why, I’d be glad to. Kilina (looking at him) It seems to me, there’s work... L. Mother What work, Kilina, at eventide? Now run along, son, see her right through the woods until you reach the roadway. Just think, alone at night in woods so gloomy! And she’s so young and fresh, so very pretty — why she might be attacked! Kilina Oh, Auntie, really! Why, now you’ve frightened me to death for sure! Come, Lukash, let us go before it’s nightfall. For even two, there might be danger! Lukash What, me? Afraid of the forest? Ha, ha! That’s something! L. Mother My son, Kilina, is a brave young man — You shouldn’t cast aspersions on his honour! 147 10*
I meant it as a joke... (Notices Uncle Leo.) Oh, Uncle Leo! You’re going home? Uncle Leo (pretending he did not hear her) Eh! May God go with you! (He goes into the forest.) Kilina Well, Auntie, I will say goodbye. Keep well! (As is the custom, she tries to kiss the old woman’s hand. But Lukash’s mother won’t permit it. She wipes her mouth with her apron, and kisses Kilina three times, very “ceremoniously”.) Kilina (going off with Lukash) Keep up your spirit, and us — don’t forget! L. Mother Merry you’ll be... when you move in with me! (She goes into the house and closes the door behind her.) Mavka rises and quietly, almost wearily, walks toward the lake. She sits on the sloping trunk of her willow tree near the water, leans her head on her folded arms and weeps silently. A fine rain begins to fall in little droplets — it looks as if a fine netting covered the glade and the house and the woods. Water Sprite (swims up to the shore and stares at Mavka with surprise and curiosity) You weeping, Mavka? Mavka Tell me, have you never shed tears, my little Water Sprite? 149
150 Water Sprite Who, me! If I should weep such tears, in one swift moment someone would laugh himself to death, for sure! Mavka O Water Sprite! You’ve never been in love.... Water Sprite Not been in love! Oh no, you’ve quite forgotten what true love’s like, what true love ought to be! Like water, true love runs serene or rapid, it rends or mocks, caresses, lures and drowns you; excites when hot, when met by only coldness it turns to stone. And that’s my kind of loving! But yours' is weak: a soul of straw and wayward as puny infant. Bending to the storm-wind, it lies down underfoot. If spark should touch it, it burns without a struggle. What remains is only blackened slag and ghost-gray ashes. When it is scorned and thrown away like rubbish, it lies enwearied just like straw turned rancid in chilly waters of embittered grief beneath late-coming rains of vain regrets. Mavka (raising her head) You say of vain regrets? Go ask the birch tree if she regrets those nights so sweet and lovely when Springtime Wind unloosed her plaited hair, her braids so long? .Water Sprite Then why is she so mournful? Mavka Because she can no longer clasp her lover, forever fondle him with languid branches. Water Sprite Why not? Mavka Her lover was — the Wind of Springtime. 151
152 Water Sprite What made her fall in love with one like that? Mavka He was so gentle, that soft'Wind of Springtime, who with his songs unfurled her budding leaflets, and with caresses rocked her crown of catkins, bedewed with tenderness her waving hair... Oh yes, he truly was the breath of springtime and she could not have known love for another. Water Sprite So let her now put on the weeds of mourning right to the ground. That wind’s embraces she will no longer know — he flew past long ago. (Quietly, without a splash, Water Sprite swims from the shore and vanishes in the pool.) Mavka is again bowed down, her long black hair falling to the earth. The wind begins to blow, chasing gray clouds across the sky as well as a flock of blackbirds that eddy round preparing to migrate. Then, before a strong gust of wind, the rainclouds are swept apart and the forest becomes visible — it is already arrayed in autumn’s colourful apparel against the background of a dark-blue sky where the sun is setting. Mavka (quietly, with deep sorrow) Yes... he flew past long ago... Wood Goblin comes out of a shoreline grove. He wears raiment the colour of old gold with a dark-red border at the hem of his mantle. Around his hat is wound the twining stalk of the hop plant}. Wood Goblin Daughter, daughter, how hard the punishment for your betrayal...! Mavka (raising her head) But whom have I betrayed? 153
154 Wood Goblin Your very self. You left the crowning heights of forest-land, descended to the petty lowly pathways. And what do you now look like? Like a servant, a hired hand who, through her bitter toil, wished but to earn a piece of happiness, and failed. And only utter shame prevented you from living like a beggar.. Remember how you looked that special night when your great love was born and came to flower? Oh, then you truly seemed Queen of the Forest, with crown of stars that gleamed in your dark hair — Good Fortune then reached out her eager arms and brought you many a gift that magic night! Mavka But now what can I do, when all the stars are darkened on my crown and in my heart? Wood Goblin For you, not all the crowns have passed away. Look round and marvel at our festal woodland! The princely ash tree wears a cloak of gold, the wild rose is festooned with strings of coral. Her maiden whiteness changed to proudest purple, awaits the guelder — once her flowers adorned you when sang the nightingale at your betrothal. Why your old willow and the grieving birch tree, are topped with gold and dressed in crimson raiment for festive autumn. And only you don’t wish to throw away your pauper’s clothing, for you’ve forgotten that no single sorrow must outweigh beauty — Beauty conquers all. 155
(Підходить до неї, Мавка відступає). 156 Mavka (rising impulsively) Give me a gay and festive dress, dear Grampa! Again I shall be like a forest princess, and happiness will fall right at my feet and beg for kindness and my favours. Wood Goblin Daughter, your royal gown was ready long ago — And yet the princess dawdled elsewhere, oddly enough or for a joke, dressed like a pauper. The Wood Goblin opens his mantle and brings out some clothing concealed there: a luxurious robe embroidered with gold, and a silver veil. He slips the robe over Mavka’s clothing. She goes to the guelder-rose and swiftly breaks off a branch with clusters of red berries, forms it into a wreath. Then she loosens her braids so her hair falls freely, puts on the wreath and bows to Wood Goblin. He drapes the silver veil over her head. Wood Goblin And now, my dear, I fear for you no longer. (He nods his head with importance, briskly walks away into the woods, and vanishes.) Red Demon rushes out of the forest. Mavka You again? (She stands poised, ready to run away.) Red Demon (without regard) No fear, I’ve not come calling on you. I seek the Fairy in the rye — but she, I guess, has gone to sleep. A pity... And you look thin and pale. Mavka (with dignity) So you imagine! Red Demon You say — imagine? Let me look at you. (He comes nearer, and Mavka retreats.) 157
158 Now what are you so frightened of? I know you are engaged. I’ll not lay hands on you. Mavka Be off! Don’t mock me! Red Demon Don’t be angry, though if I am somewhat mistaken.... Listen, Mavka, adopt me as a brother. Mavka As a brother? Red Demon Why should you not? For now our autumn’s come, and look, the sun has even lost its warmth, and our blood is cooling too. But you and I were comrades once, and afterwards you fell in love or else pretended — hard to say — now is the time for friendliness. Your hand, miss! Mavka hesitantly offers her hand. Permit me, please, to kiss you... as a brother, one kiss upon your pale sweet face. (Mavka twists away, trying to avoid it, but he kisses her just the same.) Oh, blushes at once upon your face like flowers bloom! — frail scented, virginal, autumnal plume... (Without releasing her hand, he gazes round the glade.) Look there and see the spider-line go flying in circles whirling, swinging through the air... And so do we... (Suddenly he draws her into a dance.) Yes, even we Fling around, run around, whirling freely! Stars oscillating, sparks generating, lucid and lovely, lights radiating, 159
160 everything shining, everything flying, all are in motion, incessant, desiring! And so am I... And so am I... Glow like a spark, love, O light of my eye! They whirl faster in the dance. Mavka’s silver veil twists upward like a shining snake, her black hair flies loose and mingles with the fiery-red curls of the Red Demon. Mavka Stop it! No more! Red Demon That’s true, no more can you, love, stop the dance. So have your fling! Happiness fools you, one moment — rules you, But all its charm means time is on the wing! The dance becomes madder in its wildness. We’re flying! Sky-highing! In a whirlpool flying! Go faster, Even faster Into the land of fire! Mavka Stop it! Let me go... I’m fainting... dying... (Her head falls on his shoulder, her arms drop helplessly. He continues to whirl her round in the dance, though she has fainted.) Suddenly, from beneath the earth, appears a dark, huge and terrifying figure — the Spectre (of Death). Spectre Give unto me my own. Let her go. 161 11 s-46
162 Red Demon (Не stops and lets Mavka fall from his arms. She drops helplessly onto the grass) But who are you? Spectre You do not recognize me? — “The Lone Crag Sitter.” Red Demon gives a start, and with one quick motion he hurls himself away and vanishes in the forest. Mavka regains consciousness, raises herself slightly and with wide eyes full of terror she stares at the Spectre who stretches forth his arms to gather her up. Mavka No, I do not want to! I will not go with you! For I’m alive! Lone Crag Sitter I’ll take you to a far and distant land, an unknown land where quiet darkened waters sleep peacefully like dead and gloomy eyes; and there the silent crags loom high above us — mute witnesses of times long dead and gone. It’s calm and still; no trees or even grasses make rustling sounds, nor yet a dream inspires: disturbing dreams that steal your sleep away. No wind there carries ardent songs that breathe of freedom out of reach; devouring fires are never kindled; though sharp spears of lightning are broken on the crags, they cannot ever pierce through that fortress formed of gloom and stillness. I’ll take you there for you have need of shelter: you’re pale from too much fire, and faint from dancing; you’re marked by fortune — ghost to be, and dead. Mavka (standing up) No, I’m alive! And I shall live forever! For what lives in my heart denies all dying. 163
Lone Crag Sitter But how do you know that? Mavka Because the torment I know from love, is life and keeps me living. If I could only find a faint desire but to forget, then I would go with you, yet there’s no power in all the world around us could make me wish oblivion from love. From the forest comes the rustle of someone’s footsteps. And here he comes, the one who made my torment! Away, you Ghost! My love, my hope is coming! The Lone Crag Sitter retreats into the shadows cast by the bushes, and hides there. Lukash comes out of the forest. Mavka goes to meet him. Her bright clothing makes her face seem deathly pale; hope shines in her large wide-open eyes; her movements are jerky, and weak at the same time; as if something inside her was broken. Lukash (on seeing Mavka) Oh, what a fright! What can you want from me? (He hurries to the house, knocks at the door; his mother opens it from inside without coming out. Lukash speaks to his mother from the doorstep.) Lukash Now quickly bake the wedding-bread for me — tomorrow, Mother, I shall wed Kilina. (He enters the house, the door closes.) The Lone Crag Sitter approaches Mavka from the bushes. Mavka (tears off her festive clothing) Take me away! I wish now to forget.... The Lone Crag Sitter touches Mavka. She screams, and falls into his arms. He covers her with his black mantle. Both disappear under the earth.
168 ACT THREE A gloomy, windy night in autumn. The last yellow gleam of the moon dies out among the chaos of bare treetops in the forest background. The Great Horned Owl screams, and the gray-barred owl sounds his warning Who-oo; even the little screech owl adds his piercing call. But suddenly all these sounds are blanketed out by the long drawn-out howl of a wolf which rises higher and higher till it breaks off short. Silence falls. Comes the dull light of a weary dawn in late autumn. The naked forest is barely visible against an ash-gray sky and along the edge of the forest there still lies a patch of darkness. The focus point of the lightning is centered on Lukash’s house where the walls begin to grow lighter in colour: near one wall stands a figure dressed in black, leaning feebly against a doorpost. One can scarcely realize that this is Mavka — over her black dress falls a gray veil hiding her face. The only spot of colour is on her breast — pinned there is a small reddish bunch of guelder-rose berries. As it grows a bit lighter, you notice in the clearing a huge stump on the spot where the ancient oak once grew. Near it is a fresh, already grass-grown, grave mound. Wood Goblin comes from the forest, wearing a gray cloak and a hat of wolf-fur. Wood Goblin (looks closely at the figure near the house) My daughter — you? Mavka (moving nearer to him) It’s me. Wood Goblin He let you go — that Lone Crag Sitter — so you could return? Mavka You freed me with your black nefarious crime. Wood Goblin Yet that revenge I took, so-called nefarious, was but a just revenge which I resolved on against your traitorous lover — is that not true? 169
170 Is it not really just that he should suffer the lonesome-haunted doom-ordained despair of being wolf in form and rove the forest? He should! Now he’s a wild and raving werewolf! So let him whine, and cry, drag out his howling, and thirst for human blood — but never will his evil torment die! M a v k a Don’t crow about it! For I came to his aid in trouble. Deep in my heart, I found that living word of magic which can transform beasts into human beings. Wood Goblin (stamps his foot angrily and breaks his walking-stick with a crack) You don’t deserve the name of Forest Daughter! Instead of forest freedom in your soul rules housebound slavery. M a v k a Oh, if you but knew, if you but knew how terrible it was... I lay asleep, as stones dream, in a cavern deep down and black, and damp with creeping coldness, when suddenly a voice or cry inhuman cut through those crags invincible — a long drawn howling, spreading all ways, wild and mournful throughout the dark dead waters, then awakened among the cliffs a long-dead ghostly echo.... Then even I awoke. Like fires underground, my passionate pity rent the cavern walls and I broke into the world once more. And words from my lips, once dumb, were quickened as by magic — And I performed a miracle! Oh, then I divined I’d be immortal, never forgot. 171
172 Wood Goblin Where is he now? Why is he not beside you? And his ingratitude — is that immortal As your love will ever be? Mavka Grandfather dear! If you had seen him..! When his shape turned human, he fell right at my feet, like a new-felled ash tree... And looking up at me, his gaze was pierced with such great agony, so filled with sorrow, so burning with remorse with hope all wanting.... Oh, such a look none else may have but humans..! And then before words came to me, he leaped so sudden to his feet and, hiding, from me his face with hands that shook and trembled, off he dashed running, not a word, no word he uttered, but vanished from my eye in bramble bushes. Wood Goblin And now what are you thinking you might do? Mavka I do not know... Right now I wander ghost-like around this cottage. I’ve no strength or power to leave the place... with all my heart I feel that it’s here he will return.... Wood Goblin silently and sadly shakes his head. Once more Mavka leans against the wall. Wood Goblin My poor dear child, what made you leave us for a place so gloomy? Was there indeed no rest in your own forest? Look there, your willow tree still waits for you, she made your bed up long ago, and truly she is much grieved that you still tarry here. Go in and rest. 173
Breathing noisily, Wood Goblin retreats silently into the forest. Then comes the sound of madly beating hoofs, as if someone mounted were racing through the forest at full gallop. Then it stops. K O 0 t S (trotting from behind the house with arms outstretched; he stops upon seeing Mavka) That you, here, Mavka? Mavka Why are you out roving? K о o t s I dragged their horse by his top-knot in the stable: he led me such a dance this last time — very! But no one now will ride him any more! Mavka You hateful thing! You’ve put our woods to shame! Is that how you keep faith with Uncle Leo? K о o t s Our contract’s dead and buried with him there. Mavka What? Uncle Leo’s dead? K o o t s His grave is there. Beneath the oak they buried him, but now he makes do with its old stump to rest in peace. Mavka Both are laid low... he had a premonition that this year he’d not see the winter through... (She goes over to the grave.) Oh, how my heart is weeping over you, my one and only friend! If only I had live tears to shed, I would bedew this earth and grow everlasting flowers and periwinkles 175
176 upon your grave. But now I feel so wretched, and here my grief lies, like a leaf long dead... Koots Grief goes against my nature, yet I must admit I’m sorry for the poor old fellow, for he knew how to keep in tune with our folk. He used to keep a black goat just for me among his horses, so I could ride him freely. I’d often ride that goat as fast as lightning, while all the horses stood there calmly grazing. These women don’t know how to live with us at all — they even sold the goat, cut down the oak tree, ruined sworn agreements. Well, I have paid them back! I rode to death their best horse! Buy another — I’ll do the same. Besides, I prettily bespoke a witch — oh, a devil-haggish dame — to dry their milk cows. They’ll know now what it means to go against us! The Pool King too has flooded all their haystacks, and the Lost Children mucked up all their rye-sheaves, Swamp-Fever-Spirit strikes them, merciless because the pool from their hemp-waste is shrinking. They can expect no good now from our forest! Already round the hut the Hunger Imps are gathered. Hunger Imps (Evil spirits of poverty, want and hunger. They are small, emaciated creatures dressed in rags. Hungry and pitiful, they appear from behind the house) We’re here! Who is it calls us? Mavka (throws herself between them and the door) Shoo! Be off now! No one has called you here. 177 12 5-46
178 First Imp The word was spoken, it can’t be taken back. All Hunger Imps (sitting round the doorstep) If they’d but open the door a little faster — we are hungry! Mavka I will not let you in! All Imps Then give us food! Mavka (frightened) I’ve nothing I can give you... All Imps Give those berries, the ones you wear close to your heart! Give those! Mavka These are my blood! Imps That’s nothing! We love blood. One imp throws himself at Mavka’s breast and sucks the berries, the others try to push him away to get something themselves. They growl at each other and yap like dogs. K 0 O t S You imps! Hey! let her be — she’s not a human! The Hunger Imps fall back, clacking their teeth and howling from hunger. Imps (to Koots) Then give us food, or else we’ll eat you up! (They run at Koots, who leaps out of the way.) Koots Now, now, be careful. Imps Give us food! We’re hungry! 179 12*
180 Koots Hold on there, I’ll now awake the woman. You will have food and I shall have some fun. (He picks up a clump of earth and throws it at the window, breaking the glass pane.) Voice of Lukash’s Mother (in the house) Oh, what was that? Again those evil spirits! Koots (in a whisper to the Hunger Imps) Now wait and see — she’s waking up. And quickly you will be called. Sit there for now. Be quiet, or else the old gal will lay into you so the earth will give beneath you — she can do it. The Imps gather in a dark cluster near the doorstep. Through the broken window, one can hear Lukash’s mother get out of bed. Then comes her voice and later Kilina’s. Voice of L. Mother Already daylight, and she’s still asleep. Kilina! Hey, Kilina! Can’t she sleep though! Lord, she could sleep forever... Hey, get up! You wish you never need get up! Vo ice of Kilina (sleepily) What’s the matter? L. Mother (sarcastically) It’s time for you to go and milk the cow, the dairy cow that is of Turkish breed, the one your late “departed” bought and gave you. Kilina (no longer sleepy, already catching on) I’ll milk the one I found here when I came, and then I’ll strain three drops of milk — should be a pound of butter... 181
182 L. Mother Can’t you hold your tongue! Who is to blame we have no milk or butter? With such a housekeeper as you — Good grief! Oh, what a daughter-in-law! Why should such trouble have fallen to our lot? K і 1 і n a Who was it sent for me, I’d like to know. You had here then some slut or other — you could easily have had her dressed in pretty and far better clothing. S'he would have made a daughter-in-law to suit you! L. Mother Indeed, and you think not? She would have suited. A fool was Lukash to switch her for you: for she was so obedient and kindly, her goodness would heal wounds... Yet you called her a slut or lazybones, but you yourself remade her clothes of green to fit yourself and wear them to this day — you have no shame! K і 1 і n a So, in your home, all dress in things brand new! Why there’s my husband somewhere gallivanting; While, damned to want with a mother-in-law like you, I feel deserted — neither wife nor widow! L. Mother What man would stay at home with such as you are? In vain you make complaint! You and yours ate up whatever we’d put by — and there they sit! — May Hunger Imps come visit you and yours! K і 1 і n a Grant that they visit those who summon them! 183
184 With this parting shot, Kilina opens the outside door. Koots runs off into the swamp. But the Hunger Imps leap and run into the passageway. Kilina, pail in hand, runs quickly to a woodland stream and noisily scoops up the water. She returns home at a more sedate pace — and notices Mavka beside the door. Mavka stands there, drooping helplessly, her face covered by the gray veil. Kilina (stopping, and setting the pail on the ground) Now who can this be? Listen! Hey, are you drunk, or maybe freezing? (She takes Mavka by the shoulders and shakes her.) Mavka (forcing herself, as if fighting against an overpowering sleepiness) Sleep is working on me... the winter sleep... Kilina (pulls the veil aside from the stranger’s face and recognizes Mavka) And why have you come here? Were you not paid in full for all your labour? Mavka (answering sleepily, as before) No one can ever pay me for it. Never. Kilina Who do you want to see? He’s not at home. I know you’ve come to see him! Come, admit it — Is he your lover? Mavka (still speaking as if in a dream) Long ago that morning was bright and joyous, not like it is now... but now he’s dead... 185
Та й нащо то? 186 Kilina You’ve lost your mind! Mavka (dreamily, as before) Lost, and free, I’m free... The clouds meander ’cross the sky so slowly... all shelterless and sad and all unwanted.... Where is it now, our bright blue star? Kilina (takes hold of her arm) Be off! Don’t you upset me! Why d’you stand here? Mavka (wearily moving away from the door) I stand and watch how happy you may be. Kilina Grant that you stand for good, by magic-wonders! Mavka suddenly turns into a willow tree with dry leaves and weeping branches. Kilina (overcoming her surprise, she speaks with enmity) Oh-ho! I chose a lucky time to tell you that! Well, well! You won’t stand there much longer now! Boy (runs from the house to Kilina) Oh, mummy, where’ve you been? We want to eat, and Granny gives us nothing. Kilina Eh? Don’t worry! (She bends down and whispers to him.) I hid a pie beneath the oven there — When Granny’s in the pantry, go and eat it. Boy Did you plant that old dried-up willow here? But what’s it for? 187
Не скигли!! 188 Kilina You make all things your business. Boy I’ll carve a whistle from it. Kilina Suit yourself! The boy cuts a branch from the willow and returns to the house. Out of the woods comes Lukash — thin, with long hair, without hat or coat. Kilina (on seeing Lukash she gives a happy cry; but at once her gladness changes to angry vexation) So you’ve come home! And where on earth have you been so long? Lukash Don’t ask me that! Kilina I mustn’t ask? He wanders, gallivants, the devil knows where or in what places, then says “do not ask”... Oh! my dear man, I do not have to ask you... There’s always taverns somewhere in the world where for a coat and hat you’ll get your • pleasure. Lukash \ I’ve seen no tavern... Kilina Who’d believe it, stupid! (Begins to weep.) I’ll never hold my poor head up again, all over your fine drunken fit! Lukash Shut up! Stop whining! 189
190 Kilina falls silent and looks at him with fear. Now I shall start to ask you certain questions! Where’s Uncle’s oak which now is just a stump? Kilina (confused at first, but quickly recovers) But what else could we do — die of hunger? Some buyers came, and bought it — that was that. Much joy in it — an oak! Lukash Uncle Leo swore he would not cut it down. Kilina Uncle Leo had left our world — what use was his promise? Did you or I before that give our word? Why, I’d be glad to sell the entire forest or have it cleared: it would make good land, like people need, not be a devil’s woodland. Why here at nightfall: to go outside is scary! And what good does this forest bring us? We wander through it just like werewolves; before we know it we’ll be howling like them! Lukash Hush! Hush! Don’t say that word! Shut up! (In his voice rings mad fear.) You say we should sell the forest... fell it... then it wonH be the way it is... How did you put it? Kilina What? Like were... Lukash (covers her mouth with his hand) Don’t say it, no! Kilina (breaking away from him) Take care! God’s watching! 191
Л у к а ш Що ти говориш?" 192 You’re drunk or were you tricked, perhaps enchanted? Come in the house. Lukash Coming... in a minute... but only... only... I shall drink some water! (He kneels down and drinks from the pail. Then he rises and looks thoughtfully around,, not moving from the spot where he stands.) Kilina We-11? What’s on your mind? Lukash Oh, just... don’t know.... (Hesitantly.) When I was gone, did someone come here? Kilina (with hard cruelty) K Who did you think might come? Lukash (lowering his eyes) Don’t know... Kilina (smiling with malice) You don’t know, but maybe I know who. Lukash (in alarm) You? Kilina And who else? I know the person you are waiting for, but only — well, it is no use to wait! And if she came, she turned into a tree-trunk.... Lukash What’s that you said? 193 13 5-46
194 Kilina I guess you heard me. L. Mother (comes out of the house and hurries to embrace her son. Lukash meets her coldly) Sonny! Oh, dearest son! Oh, what I’ve had to bear from that awful witch of yours! Lukash (startled) From whom? L. Mother (pointing at Kilina) From that one! Lukash (with a scornful laugh) So she’s a witch now. Hah! Then you are sentenced to be a witch’s mother-in-law — a judgement! And who’s to blame? She was the one you wanted. L. M o t h e r If I had only known what she was like — A dirty lazy creature..! Kilina (breaking in) Good heavens! Just hear her talk! The world has never seen the like of you for witch or nasty creatures! Well, Lukash, something of your mother is in you! — real iron — go ahead and bicker! Lukash And you, I see, are likely quite as tough as iron. Kilina And I expected that you would defend me! Instead — like mother, so like son, I see! 195 13*
Лукаш (трохи присоромлений) Та хіба ж я що? 196 What devils made you marry me? So you could have fun by picking on me here? L. Mother (to Lukash) Now why can’t you tell her to shut her mouth, I ask you! What’s this, am I supposed to be her slave, or what? Lukash Give me some peace! Fine time to clear the air! D’you want me to not only leave the house but quit the world as well? By God, I will! Kilina (to his mother) Well? Got what you expected? L. Mother May you get it from your son also! (Infuriated, Lukash’s mother goes towards the house — on the doorstep she meets Kilina’s son who is running out with his willow pipe.) Out you get, you devil! (She pushes the boy aside and enters the house, banging the door hard behind her.) Boy You’re home already, Daddy? Lukash \ Yes, my son. (He puts a shade of irony on the word "son”.) Kilina (shocked) So tell him, then, what name to call you by... Well? Maybe “Uncle”? Lukash (slightly ashamed) But, which am I, really? 197
198 Come here, соте here, boy, соте! Don’t be afraid. (He strokes the boy’s blond head.) You made the pipe all by yourself, eh? Boy Yes. I cannot play it, though. If only you could! (He offers the pipe to Lukash.) Lukash Eh! Boy, my time for playing pipes is over! (He loses himself in sad thoughts.) Boy ( whining) Ooh! Simply you don’t want to! Mother, tell me, why doesn’t Daddy want to play for me? Kilina So what! Who needs his tootling anyhow! Lukash Well, give it here — that pipe of yours. (Takes the pipe.) A good one. You used that willow? Boy ’Course I did. From that one! (He points to the willow tree that Mavka was turned into.) Lukash Somehow I never noticed it before. (To Kilina.) Well, did you plant it? Kilina Who plants willow trees? A shoot comes up — and then it keeps on growing. The earth is damp, there’s always rain to help it. 199
чогось за серце стисло... 200 В о у (capriciously) Why don’t you play the pipe? Lukash (thoughtfully) Me — play it? (He begins to play [Tune 14], at first quietly, then louder; he changes over to the spring song he played once for Mavka [tune 8]. The sound of the flute begins to be vocalized into words.) “O how sweet his playing, like the deepest sighing; feel my breast will soon be breaking for my heart is waking!” Lukash (dropping the flute from his hands) Oh! What is this flute made of! Witchcraft! Witchcraft! Frightened by his scream, the boy runs into the house. Now answer, Sorceress! What about this willow? (Lukash grabs Kilina by the shoulder.) Kilina Let go of me! Could I know anything? I have no dealings with your forest wizards — not like your KIN! So chop it, if you want to! You think I care? Here’s an axe — go on! (Kilina has run to the porch and brought him an axe.) Lukash (takes the axe, goes to the willow and brings down the blade once into the trunk: the tree rocks and rustles its dry leaves. He swings again, but suddenly drops his arms) I can’t. Somehow I cannot raise my arms, and something makes my heart ache... 201
202 Kilina Give it here! (She grabs the axe from Lukash and raising it high she swings it down against the willow's trunk.) But at this moment, like a fiery meteor from the sky, Red Demon flies down and embraces the willow. Red Demon I’ll set you free again, my love, my darling! The willow tree suddenly bursts into flame. Reaching the treetop, the flames leap across to the house and the straw thatch roof starts to burn. The fire spreads quickly. Lukash’s mother and Kilina’s children run out of the house, screaming: “Fire! Fire! Save us! Oh, the house is on fire!” Kilina and her mother-in-law run to and fro,, dragging everything they can out of the flaming house. On the sacks and bundles pulled from the house the Hunger Imps huddle together. Then they hide in the sacks. The children run with buckets of water to throw on the fire, but it burns all the more fiercely. L. M o t h e r (to Lukash) What’re you waiting for? Save some of our goods! Lukash (stares with dull eyes at the rafters which are covered with curling flames like the petals of a flower) Our goods? Perhaps not gqfod but evil burns there? The rafters fall in with a crash. The sparks fly upward forming a tall column. The ceiling gives way and all the house is turned into a burning fiery stake. Heavy white clouds appear and snow begins to fall. Soon, through the thickly falling snow, nothing is visible but the crimson flickering flames where the fire still burns. At last the red flames die out, and the snowfall lessens, revealing black, water-soaked remains from which smoke still rises and embers crackle. 203
204 Neither Lukash’s mother nor Kilina’s children, nor the bundles they saved are visible. Through the lightly falling snow, one sees only the partly burned barn, a loaded cart and here and there some farm implements. Kilina (carrying a bundle, pulls Lukash by the sleeve) Hey, Lukash! Doesn’t stir! You turned to stone? You might at least help out, and carry bundles! Lukash Already you’ve lugged sacks out filled with misery! Kilina Best keep your mouth shut! What is all this nonsense? Lukash (with a strange quiet laughter) I see, dear wife, things you can never see... For I am wiser now... Kilina (with fear) Oh, my own husband, What things you find to say... I’m scared of you! Lukash What are you scared of? Foolish things don’t scare you! Yet you’re afraid of wisdom? Kilina Lukash, darling! Let’s go to the village! Lukash I’ll not go. I will not leave the woods. And here I stay. Kilina What will you do here all alone? Lukash But must I do anything? 205
206 Kilina How are we to live, then? Lukash Why should we live? Kilina For God’s sake, Lukash dear, have you completely lost your head, or what? Perhaps you’ve fallen sick from fear of something. Let’s go to the village — there’s a woman who cures all terrors with her spells! (She pulls him by the arm.) < Lukash (looking at her with a faint smile) But who, then, is going to stay and guard our goods remaining? (He points at the loaded cart.) Kilina (like a thrifty housewife) Oh, that’s the truth! They’ll drag off everything! When it is known we’ve had a fire here, the villagers will simply come in droves! It’s really better if you stay, dear Lukash. I’ll run and find someone who’ll lend a horse — for ours, you know, was burned right in the stable! — We’ll pack our things and drive the cart away: your relatives, I guess, will take us in... Oh lordy! Something we must save, for sure.... Kilina speaks the last few words as she runs toward the woods. Lukash looks after her, shaking with silent laughter. Kilina soon disappears. Out of the forest towards Lukash there approaches a Tall Woman’s Figure in a long white gown and with a coarse white muslin cloth tied round her head in the old-fashioned way, knotted at the back. She walks, shakily, as if bending before a strong wind. At times she stops and bends down as if looking for something. Arriving near some bramble bushes, which grow not far from the remains of the fire, she straightens up 207
208 and then her thin worn face becomes visible — a face remarkably like that of Lukash. Lukash Who are you? Why are you here? Figure I’m a Fate doomed to perish — brought here into the forest by soul unwise and foolish. And now I’m lost and wander Ghost-like where groves meander; bending low, I venture, seeking paths that enter Lost Heaven, Love, my Mentor. That path designed by nature beneath white snow has vanished — in this chaotic verdure, I am forever banished...! Lukash Break off, my Fate, some branches: your search they will avail — sweep off the fallen snow, and underneath will show at least one faithful trail! Fate Oh, once here in the springtime, through all this grove I sauntered: along the trails, as guide-signs, I magic flowers planted. You trampled down the flowers, no pity could prevail. Through ravines grow woodbines, but no longer guide-signs to show the missing trail. Lukash O Fate of mine, try sifting the snow with every finger, for where the snow’s deep-drifting, one flower-stalk may linger. Fate My hands are growing colder, my fingers frozen lie — 209 14 5-46
210 Now I’m truly weeping, aching with the feeling that I must surely die. (Gives a groan and starts moving away.) Lukash (reaches out his arms to her) Please tell, and guidance give — without Fate, how then live! Fate (points to the earth beneath her feet) Like a torn-off branch that falls, so Fate falls — none lives! (Fate, faltering, goes away and vanishes in the snows.) Lukash bends over the spot pointed out by Fate and finds the willow-pipe, the one he threw away. He takes it in his hand and walks across the snowy glade to the birch tree. He sits beneath its branches, covered with snow, and turns and turns the pipe in his fingers, smiling at times like a child. A faint white figure, reminiscent of Mavka, appears from behind the birch tree, and bends over him. Mavka’s Apparition Now play, O play, let your heart sing, for only this remains of what I was. Lukash That’s you? Just like a vampire you have come to drink my very blood? Drink up! Drink up! (He opens his shirt and reveals his chest.) Live on my living blood. That’s all that’s wanting... for it was I who took your life. Mavka No, darling, you gave a soul to me, like blade of knife gives singing voice to quiet willow branches. Lukash I gave a soul to you? But killed your body! 211 14*
212 What are you now, this moment? Ghost! A shade! (He gazes at her with inexpressible sadness.) Mavka 0 for the flesh have no sorrows! It set alight a bright torch that will shine pure and burning to warm like good wine, so, flying up, freedom-sparks blaze the morrows. Ashes lie fluffy and free Unto their native earth slowly returning, melting with waters where seed is sojourning — thus with my death is conceived a new tree. People will visit me often: joyous and sad, both the rich and the poor, bringing me gladness, and griefs they endure, while my soul speaks to them, troubles to soften. 1 shall respond to them all — quietly rustling my long willow stems, tenderly fluting like reed-pipe to them, mournful dew-tears from my boughs letting fall. О Г1.1 be sure to start singing all of the tunes you once sang just for me, playing in springtime a sweet melody, so forest-dreams gather once more... Play, for me, dear, I implore! Lukash begins to play. At first the music is sad (Tunes 15, 16) like a wintry wind; as if sorrowing for something dead but unforgettable. But soon rings out a victorious song of love (Tune 10 — but it rings out louder and more passionately than the first time it was played that spring) and it overcomes all the yearning of his music. As the music changes, so the winter scene changes all around: the birch rustles its fluttering leaves, the sounds of spring echo through the greening forest. The dark winter day is turned into a bright moonlit night in spring. Mavka appears, wearing her starry crown, looking the way she did in the beginning of the play. 213
[25.VII 1911 p.] Lukash runs to meet her with cries of joyous welcome. Then the wind blows the white blossoms from the trees. The petals fly and fly till they conceal the two lovers — and then falls the snow. When the snowfall clears up a bit — again one sees a winter scene. The trees are powdered with snow. Lukash sits alone, holding his panpipe, leaning against the birch tree. His eyes are closed, but a happy smile plays upon his lips. He does not move. A cap of snow is piled on his head — the snow sifts all over his figure, and falls and falls without end... [25-VII-1911]
NOTE MUSIC FOR VOLYN FOLK MELODIES SELECTED BY LESYA UKRAINKA FOR THE FOREST SONG У > сДт 1»^ U ICj ^ l&f л Andante _ Andante

All the melodies must be played solo, without orchestral accompaniment and without ‘affected’ changes in the arrange¬ ments given; if it is difficult to pass from one melody to another (especially when the key changes) in the same order as presented here, without long and unnatural transitional phrasing, then it would be best to separate them by making simple pauses as is usually done when played by village musicians — for specifically here one must try to preserve the village or folk style without introducing unnecessary ‘high style’ changes in key, tempo and the like which would be out of place in folk music. Only in case an instrument is used that ‘imitates’ the sounds produced by a flute — but for which the key of the melody is unsuitable — may the artist-musician transpose the melody to a higher or lower key, depending on whether it will sound better and from which it would be easier to make the transition from one melody to another.
