that can d ign and provide stylish closet solutions, it is oasy to overcome thi hurdt . but not without
creating nother on - cosL The nicest clos t systems, the ones you would happily welcome into your
home, generally come with corresponding high price tags Giver the amount of potenti I usefulness

add value lo our homes.
This book Is intended tor beginner and intarm diale woodworkers who are interested: in designing and

design detail
IVE RECENTLY STARTED TO ADD AW ELEMENT TO MY
DRAWER COW STRUCT ION THAT I THINK COW
TRIBUTES A SMALL DEGREE OF REFINEMENT WITH A
MINIMAL AMOUNT OF LABOR INSTEAD OF LEAVING
THE TOP EDGES OF THE DRAWERS FLAT I'VE BEEN
ROUNDING THEM OUER WITH A Vv <GMM) ROUTER
BIT SET INTO MY ROUTER TABLE. IVE DISCOVERED
THAT IT IS CRITICAL TO RIP THE FRONT AND BACK
PANELS OF THE DRAPERS '/*" (BUM) NARROWER
THAN THE 51DE5-THE DIFFERENCE IN HEIGHT AL
LOWS THE ROUNDOVER TO START A WD STOP EVENLY.
IF THE PARTS WERE THE SAME HEIGHT. THE ROUN-
DOVER WOULD HAVE AW AWKWARD GAP AT THE COR-
WERS. SOME PEOPLE MAY NOT NOTICE THIS DETAIL,
BUT I COWSIDER IT ESSENTIAL TO BUILDING
DRAWERS THAT ARE MORE THAN ORDINARY.
MATERIALS SELECTION
The *'f (19mm) cherry plywood ha*.
rich, gorgeous iook. but it is not a cheap
material to work with Fortunately many
of the pans involved >n building liub
closet end up hidden from view after final
installation Fct this reason, I didn't have
to shell dlll tho big bucks for premium
material and I even got to use enme scrap
wood that I'd saved from another project
n thr materials list I denoted the parts
that allow for substitution
In this closet. 1 used standard issue
^a '-th'ck (13mnn) birch plywood for the
drfiweis (mostly because T had a lot of
scrap to use and I was excited to tree up
the space in my shop). However I have
recently be^>me a huge fan of pie On
ished Vj'-thicfc (13mm) plywood drawer
stock You tan buy Jt in 5 x 5 (1524mm
x I524rrun) shoots at many lumberyards,
and tt oan quickly be npped down to
whatever dimensions you need for your
dm wens The amount of time autl effort
you save by [aiming out the finishing is
worth the oxtm cast For this closet, it
mitjbt nrssc you an pxtra $1B of $20 and
you'll probably save about an hour end a
half of tedious woik
I used aV (19mm) rustic-grade cherry
foi this project The "rustic" designation
means there are small knots in the vonccr
If I used Al cherry grade I would have
paid 3D percent moic. Foi this project,
Ihe rustic giade was an ideal material' 1
stained it rathei dark which minimized
ibe appearance of die knots, and the
onentatiot of the components made die
veneer faces Iqes visible

closet-based
home office
Converting a closet into a mini home office is an
opaon for those who don't have an entue room to sacrifice In this example, the
closet is left open because I think it looks great, and I keep it tidy enough to L3
on display most of the time. If you work amidst clutter, though, you can easily
add a set of doors.
I'he most important part of planning this closet is evaluating your storage needs
and working style I already owned a simple wooden stool that is comfortable
for me to sit at, so 1 played around with a few measurements and decided on a
desktop height of 36" t965mm). I also knew that 1 wanted as big of a desktop as
possible because I need to spread out as I work. This rerpjirement basically
divided the space into upper and lower portions. I realized that I could work more
storage inio the lower area, so I kept the upper area pretty minimal J like hav
mg open shelves to -show off knickknaoks and 1 can always incorporate baskets
and bins later oi if I need to
I had a lot of stuff to squeeze into the lower area. One of the drawers is very
shadow and functions as a roll out printer tray, which frees up a lot of desktop
space and eliminates some visual clutter. I also have a pullout recycling bin, and
five deep drawees thai, hold everything from envelopes to files Foe file storage, I
used aftemiarket drop-in fUe iails that I bought at an office store I left one
cabinet mostly open ao that it could hold a computer tower should I ever give up
my tiuaty laptop 1 also dedicated a small portion of that same cabinet to hold
cables and cords
I used 3A' (19mmJ MDF because it speeds up the construction process (you
don't need to do any edge-banding}. It is also good for the budget The expense
in this project lies in the drawer slides and the recycling pullout rather than
high-end veneered plywoods. MDF also takes paint beautifully, which allowed
mo to experiment with some nifty color combinations This particular
arrangement ol doois and drawer Ironts really asks for a playhil use of color

walk-in closet
This s a dream closet for
these homeowners The long wall provided
an opportunity for a focal point, so we
embellished it with framed artwork. Fresh flowers
and accent lighting We also chose to place
the clothes rods on the side walls so the car©-
fully comixised look of the focal wall would
be as unclutte ed as possible The doors and
drawer fronts disp ay a shop-made molding
detail, and the drawers, which feature v 1-
vet drawer bottoms end hardwood dividers
are made to contain jewelry We used fluted
molding and Tosettes for some of tlii trim,
and a medium-toned stain ro uunplnmrni,
the neutral wall color The small coun 'Hop
a^ea is tiled in limestone, end town mol lint;
caps off the top of the orgauzer
From a functional point of view this closet
presents a question that is unique to walk
in closets, how to best Use the space in the
comers of the room This design IncOfpo-
ates comer un~ts to take advantage of the
available space and make it as accessibt
as possible Each unit is built as one sobd
piece, thereby providing a great deal of
stability This project was built with 3 4" (19mm)

The unit is a neutral color—since the boys h ve plenty of colorful dothing as
it is. we wanted to avoid the visual chaos diet could easily result from bright.
childish colors. The neutral color will still be appropriate when the boys are elder

hall closet
I'm using the term hall closet to refer to any closet
located near a home's main entrance—it may 01 may not actually be in a hail
way Not everyone is lucky enough to have one but for those who do this
closet can provide e convenient place to store all kinds of stull Typical contents
include coats, shoes and umbrellas, and sometimes the vacuum er as well
There is no one-size-hts-al] approach to hall closets The project here i fleets
custom solution to some unique storage needs
In this case, closets in other parts of the home hand 1-^1 shoe Storage bo that
was a nonif ^ue The amount of coat storage provided in the ougin I
configuration was adequate, but the clothes rod was placed at the wrong height foi this
family's needs At eye level, it meant there was Only mediocre sto &Q above
and below the coata We decided to talse the nod 75" (l9Q&mnl) and r create
a laige storage aiea belaw the coats This left a 16" h.gh (4Jjomrn) Space above
where we installed <j sheil Its a bit too high to reach on a daily basis but
provides extra storage for infrequently used items.
We decided to build a cabinet to fill the area helow U.e coais It spans moat of
the closets width, with a small space reserved on earh side for Ion coats Th*
unit tea uies two pullout drawers tor hats and mittens, and an open fihel at Ih"1
top for a set of music hooka the family often uses when they gather around the
piaro They wanted the books to be close at hand without duLteung up the
living room and the closet turned out to be an ideal solution.
The unit is freestanding, and it is finished on ell sides, which moan it c "n bo
