of sterling silver dining place settings,” says Mills. “The China room is definitely
my favorite and I’ve never seen a China room like this; it’s pretty spectacular.”
Luxury persists upstairs in a marvelous primary suite. “A beautiful sitting
room opens onto an outdoor terrace overlooking the backyard and the side
yard, which is all rolling grass. So, if you’re sitting on the terrace outside the
primary bedroom, you can be anywhere in the world.” Three additional guest
rooms offering a plethora of amenities, and a theater room completes this level.
The outdoor sanctuary is sure to please with alfresco dining/lounging

the studio of Joe Ginsberg Design is in
demand by conscientious, artisanal-minded
clients whose projects include luxury penthouses,
sophisticated night spots and fashionable hotels.
For nearly three decades, interior designer and
craftsman Ginsberg has applied a unique approach of
incorporating customized materials and furnishings
into every project, serving not only as designer. but
artisan as well.
“I’m a painter and sculptor. My design work stems
from that foundation and temperament, so I treat my
interiors as if they were canvases,” says Ginsberg, adding,
“It’s a very artisanal design-build approach.” Ginsberg’s
lifelong passion for painting — his contemporary pieces
are prized by collectors — and his set production
experience in the film industry taught him to fabricate,
through steel, glass or stone, virtually anything a client

might desire. What most designers outsource, he creates as part of
Master Architectural Fabrication, which includes glass-blowing
and casting, metal and millwork.
Ginsberg, a native New Yorker, has been inspired by a diverse
range of creative pioneers. Among them are architects Antoni
Gaudí, Mies van der Rohe, Eero Saarinen, Louis Kahn, and the
Bauhaus masters whose craftsmanship clearly resonates with
him — as well as artists Brancusi and Picasso. Nobody, however,
could accuse Ginsberg of being anything but completely original,
a rarity in the highly derivative world of contemporary design.
His Tempo Luxury Home collection includes personal designs
for lighting, textiles, unique objets d’art, and JOS+LYN rugs in
collaboration with Lynne van Mever.
Ginsberg’s design practice fuses architecture, interior design and
art, but rather than imposing his own tastes, his relationships with
clients are collaborative. Employing an intuitiveness developed
over the years, Ginsberg is adept at elevating his
clients’ visions even beyond their abilities to fully
articulate them. While clients’ needs and budgets
will dictate how much of Ginsberg’s interiors are
handcrafted in his studio, it is frequently more
than 50 percent, and in the case of some projects
— Manhattan’s Marmara Park Avenue Hotel is a
good example — every aspect of the designs are fully
customized. “My pieces are timeless, but classic, they
never fit a trend and I look for something innovative
in every one,” submits Ginsberg.
“I love the medium,” says Ginsberg of the forged
steel that appears in many of his furnishings and
architectural elements, adding, “It can exhibit
different personalities based on how it’s sculpted or finished.”
He explains, “Our asset is bringing a tactile sense of surprise to
materials and fabrication, with nuances that sometimes introduce
a little humor or surprise the senses, engaging clients and their
guests.” Insisting he never repeats himself, Ginsberg states, “I try
not to have a signature style or obvious approach, as it’s really
about the requirements of the clients and artisanship of the pieces.”
Ginsberg’s self-authored MAX Furniture Collection, much of it
originating as bespoke pieces for his interior projects, reflects the
same handcrafted approach and graceful contours of his interior
architectural elements. The Curl dining table features an elliptical
wood surface supported by a nest of curvy forged blackened steel,
while his Emerald side tables consist of thick, seamless cast glass
surfaces cantilevered over burnished brass legs. He adds, “The
number one consideration is how a piece functions, but even if it’s
just an objet d’art, we should ask, ‘what’s it doing for our senses?’”

Every element of the hotel, from the lobby floor
to the ceiling lights of the penthouse suites, is a
product of Ginsberg’s studio.
Ginsberg is dedicated to eco-conscious, green design and has
developed, in partnership with Green Global Concrete Technology
(GGCT), his own proprietary terrazzo and concrete products
available for both structural and decorative applications. Not only
are the products themselves created from recycled or salvaged
materials, but by eliminating transportation and minimizing
material waste, the carbon footprint of their production is further
reduced. “Just as it was our responsibility to improve upon what
we’ve inherited from previous generations, so it is our mandate
to consider the future, and hand off a practical formula for
establishing a sustainable path forward,” says Ginsberg.
The designer’s clientele and reputation are increasingly
becoming international, but much of his finest work is still
executed in his hometown. At a 5,000-square-foot duplex in New
York’s Upper East Side, Ginsberg created a gallery-like residential
environment with unique, custom architectural appointments
and furnishings that could only be curated by a designer with

an artist’s eye. The result is a compelling luxury residence that
transmits both warmth and a sense of drama.
The duplex’s highly lacquered, deep cherry entryway features
an elegant, curvaceous staircase highlighted by custom brass
railing and illuminated by a dramatic corkscrew pendant that
mimics the contours of the stairs. A crystal and hand-blown glass
chandelier — like most of the signature pieces in this residence,
it was created in Ginsberg’s fabrication studio — anchors the
soaring living room. Evidence of the designer’s almost obsessive
attention to detail is the incorporation of miniature hand-blown
glass animals (e.g., hummingbirds, squirrels) into the lighting
fixture, included primarily for the delight of the family’s young
children who enjoy a close-up view of the chandelier from the
mezzanine. Bordering the room is a raised Japanese-inspired
cherry blossom relief, while a smoky frescoed landscape provides
the backdrop for a curvilinear hammered brass fireplace that was
also created by Ginsberg and his team.

Midtown Manhattan’s Marmara Park Avenue Hotel, a
luxury boutique property, is a showplace for Ginsberg’s artisanal
craftsmanship and ambitious customization of interior spaces. Every
element of the hotel, from the lobby floor to the ceiling lights of
the penthouse suites, is a product of Ginsberg’s studio. Guests enter
the building through an intricately patterned bronze door, finding
themselves in a jewel box-like conservatory crafted from forged
blackened steel and faceted glass panels, illuminated by a unique
handcrafted bronze and hand-blown glass globe pendant.
Within the Marmara’s atrium lobby are a pair of monolithic
concierge desks hand-carved from limestone, while a cocktail bar lies
behind a mirror-finished, organically shaped stainless-steel fireplace
and stunning floor-to-ceiling sculpture composed of a flock of handcarved birds, inspired by an abacus and seemingly floating in mid-air.
Underfoot is terrazzo inlaid with brass, and every banquette, chair
and coffee table on this seductive ground floor — and each of the
20 floors above it — is a Ginsberg original.

pplying ink to a piece of paper — executing routine
tasks of writing checks or signing contracts — can be
accomplished by any nondescript plastic-and-aluminum
pen. Many manufacturers do an admirable job of mass-producing such pens
that sell for far less than a cup of coffee. But in the hands of skilled craftsmen,
those pedestrian instruments can be reimagined as luxurious objets d’art that
transform a signature into a memorable experience.
Like watches, pens are small, mechanical apparatuses with ancient origins,
and like timepieces, there is demand by discriminating consumers and collectors
for writing instruments handcrafted with luxury materials. “It’s a status symbol,
one of the things you can do to distinguish yourself as a discerning individual,”
reports Laura Chandler, a leading pen journalist who concedes the world of
writing instruments continues to be male-dominated.

“Writing instruments are one of those products that can be
manufactured on a very small scale, so there’s really no end in
sight for those over-the-top limited-edition pens,” says Chandler.
Currently a board member of Pen Collectors of America and
production editor for The Pennant, its magazine for aficionados
of vintage pieces, she includes wood-crafted, bejeweled Von Moos
Pens, David Oscarson and Pilot, the Japanese manufacturer,
among her favorite brands. Chandler cites the exquisite, ultraexpensive Sakura Rose, a 2005 pen commemorating a 75-year
partnership between Namiki (Pilot’s luxury line) and Dunhill as
an extraordinary example of artistry and craftsmanship exhibiting
the traditional Japanese lacquering technique of maki-e.
Montblanc, whose pens are a gift of choice for college graduates,
is a name associated with attainable luxury, but the Hamburg,
Germany-based brand’s limited-edition writing instruments can be
valued in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Part of Montblanc’s
High Artistry collection, “Tribute to the Great Wall of China,” is an
ornate Ming Dynasty-inspired design priced at nearly $2 million
when released in 2021. The spectacular writing instrument, featuring
a twisted dragon created from diamonds, rubies and sapphires, is
no ordinary graduation gift.
Much admired are the products of St. Louis-based David
Oscarson, a brand whose writing instruments celebrate natural
beauty, architectural achievements, historical events, or extraordinary
lives. Every sterling silver pen incorporates vibrantly colored enamel
applied over guilloché, a painstaking ornamentation technique
popularized by Fabergé.
Demonstrating an appreciation for humanitarianism, founder
David Oscarson commemorates the history of Ellis Island, while a
blue-and-silver design featuring the Star of David and the triple crown
of Sweden honors Swedish diplomat Raoul Wallenberg, who harbored
thousands of Jews during the Holocaust. Issues often incorporate
intriguing trivia, such as a limited-edition of 63 pieces for a design
honoring philanthropist Alfred Nobel or 73 pieces for a tribute to
scientist Sir Alexander Fleming — numbers representing the honorees’
respective ages upon their deaths.
“I like to think of themes that will resonate with buyers, and
try to create pens that have a story to tell,” says Oscarson, who
established his company in 2000, almost a century after Montblanc.
The penmaker notes that writing instruments are among the few
accessories available to gentlemen to express their true sense of style.
Assessing his customers, Oscarson suggests, “They tend to be people
who appreciate jewelry or art, individuals who value the kind of fine
craftsmanship found in wristwatches or yachts.”

Collectors will pay more than $250,000 for some
Oscarson writing instruments, and a one-of-a-kind special
edition 18-karat gold fountain pen encrusted with nearly
35 carats of white, yellow and caramel diamonds was on the
market for more than $500,000. Most Oscarson fountain
pens, however, are priced at about $6,400, an expenditure
that certainly represents an indulgence, but in the rarified
world of luxury pens is relatively accessible.
Caran d’Ache is a Swiss manufacturer of high-end
writing instruments prized by collectors or anybody
wishing to make an impression at a business meeting.
Many of the company’s products are affordable luxuries,
reports Gregory Hengesbaugh, national sales manager for
Creative Art Materials, Ltd., the exclusive distributor of
Caran d’Ache in the U.S. He cites the recently released
Léman Bleu Marin, a handsome navy blue-lacquered
piece that, starting at $875, is an exceptional value. While
that pen might represent middle-class indulgence, mindblowing extravagance is a signature of Caran d’Ache.
Because the company is based in Geneva, Switzerland,
Caran d’Ache is in a unique position to artfully connect
the dots between the artisanal craftsmanship of pens and
timepieces. “The brand benefits from Swiss manufacturing
traditions, whose exacting precision in watchmaking carries
over to fine writing instruments,” says Hengesbaugh.
Its limited-edition 1010 Timekeeper fountain pen is an
homage to watchmaking, with the elements of a watch
dial displayed on its barrel through guilloché artistry.
Two interchangeable silver- and rhodium-plated caps are included, one
inspired by watch strap design and the other reminiscent of a watch’s winding
crown. Requiring an investment of about $10,000, that standard-issue
1010 Timekeeper is far more attainable than an uber-extravagant Diamond
Edition, a version encrusted with 850 precious stones and priced at a jawdropping $1 million.
The original release of the Caran d’Ache Gotica, an artistic celebration
of Gothic art, was limited to 1,140 pieces, a number referencing the year
recognized by historians as the beginning of the Gothic era. Fleurs-de-lis,
rosettes and Gothic arches are displayed along the pen’s rhodium-plated
sterling silver barrel, and while the pen’s aesthetics honor medieval times, its
state-of-the-art rhodium-coated gold nib enhances the writing experience.
A unique special edition of the Gotica, clad in 900 diamonds, 72 emeralds
and 72 rubies, was priced at $487,000.

Arguably, no company is more adept at elevating pens to storytelling masterpieces
than Montegrappa, Italy’s oldest manufacturer of luxury writing instruments. A recent
edition is Tutankhamun: Ultimate Legacy (beginning at $12,000), a pen whose cap is
a stunning re-creation of King Tut’s death mask. Its construction of sterling silver (100
pieces) or solid 18-karat gold (10 pieces), with black diamonds enhancing the exacting
technique of cloisonné, replicates the lavish ornamentation of the pharaohs. In dramatic
fashion, the product is presented in an Egyptian art-clad diorama, with the pen resting
in the burial chamber in the Valley of the Kings.
Previously, Montegrappa issued a limited-edition Samurai fountain pen ($15,000) —
there were just 177 released — that was packaged in a black lacquered box
that included a sterling armored warrior along with a miniature katana
sword case containing a letter opener. An additional seven pieces
were handcrafted from solid 18-karat gold which, currently
available for $100,000-plus, might be described as toy
soldiers for billionaires. Some more moderately priced
Montegrappa issues feature contemporary themes such
as Harry Potter, Batman or Lord of the Rings. “They
realize that a lot of Gen Xers and Millennials not only
have the money, but might be prepared to spend it
on a pen that evokes happy, youthful memories,”
says Chandler.
Every year Aurora, another luxury Italian pen
maker, produces a single issue of its Diamante fountain
pen whose graceful platinum barrel and cap are entirely
obscured by 1,919 De Beers diamonds (representing the
year Aurora was founded). With a full 30 carats of bling,
it appears to be the most exclusive writing instrument in the

eason one of HBO’s Emmy-winning anthology
series, The White Lotus from Mike White featured
a star-studded cast and was filmed in a tropical
paradise that fans are eager to visit themselves.
The Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea, which was the
primary film location for season one, is an open-air resort
that boasts stunning views of the ocean, plunge pools, and
a look into Hawaii culture. The second installment of the
series brought us an epic storyline and yet another truly
dazzling destination. San Domenico Palace, Taormina, a
Four Seasons Hotel glittered on screen and offers a uniquely
historic hotel that overlooks the Ionian Sea and active
volcano, Mount Etna. As a die-hard fan of the show, or
merely a travel enthusiast, either location deserves a place
on your bucket list.
The destinations featured in the show truly shine
throughout the storylines because of the careful attention
to detail and respect for authenticity. “The show is really a
love letter to both locations,” says David Bernard, executive
producer of The White Lotus, adding that “the location really
dictated everything and drove a big part of the creative.”
For both seasons, finding hotels was a difficult task as they
had to meet specific criteria in terms of aesthetics and film
logistics; however, once the Four Seasons locations were
settled on, the stories were specifically tailored to paint an
authentic picture of Maui and Tamorina.

In Sicily, San Domenico Palace is “among the oldest hotels in
town and arguably has the best location, boasting amazing views
of Taormina bay and Mount Etna from our lush gardens,” says
Maraviglia. Of course, when the Four Seasons began managing
the hotel, all of the comforts and amenities were added to make
every vacation unforgettable, especially as the only resort in Sicily
to have 18 suites with a plunge pool. The palace had a long history
prior to being a part of The White Lotus, though it’s no stranger
to hosting renowned guests.
“It is hard to summarize the history of San Domenico Palace in
a few words, it’s so long and rich,” explains Maraviglia. “It was a
monastery dating back to the 14th century. And then in 1896, it
became a hotel. At the time, Taormina had become a popular stop
for the Grand Tour. Intellectuals, artists, and aristocrats were our
main guests until the 50s when it became popular with Hollywood
stars including Sofia Loren, Audrey Hepburn, Greta Garbo, and
many others.”
Following several groups as they vacation at these luxury resorts, the characters
on The White Lotus fall into all sorts of mishaps and mystery as the drama
unfolds, yet the backdrop of each season creates a beautiful contrast of beauty
against the chaos. Bejeweled with fine foods, spa treatments, stunning views,
and amenities galore, the resorts are luxurious, but are ultimately more complex,
with incredible histories, and are representative of the local culture. According
to Lorenzo Maraviglia, the general manager of San Domenico Palace, a Four
Seasons Hotel, “I refer to our hotel as a museum resort. Our guests usually visit
here to dive into the past and be enchanted by the present. I hear many people
say “wow” when they enter the hotel and that reminds me every day why it’s
such a privilege to work here.”
Another aspect of both hotels that comes through on screen is the way
the locations embrace the surrounding nature and make it a large part of the
experience. “What I loved about Maui was how open and airy it is. That’s a typical
part of Hawaiian hotels, but the open pool area, the sunsets, and the restaurants
right on the beach really stood out,” adds Bernad. At the Maui resort, the scent

Captivating cliffs and coves mark the Croatian coast.
Explore Zlatni Rat, Bol, the island of Brač, and Central
Dalmatia for clear waters, picturesque lunches, and

with Croatia’s history. “The country lies on some of
Europe’s oldest archeological sites,” says Lucijana
Natalija Jerković, head of global PR for the Croatian

Away from the beaches, you can sip a glass of Plavac
Mali on a privately chartered yacht on the Adriatic
Sea or spend an intimate afternoon at one of the
delightful wineries in Croatia, where the wine scene
is on the rise. Greek settlers were the first to cultivate
vineyards in the 5th century and now “there are over
100 indigenous grape varieties in Croatia,” says Jo
Ahearne, winemaker of Ahearne vino. “The region
is rich, fertile and boasts the type of weather that
many winemakers could only dream of,” says Sara
Rasmussen, Hvarwine co-founder.
REST AND REJUVENATE IN ZURICH
Zurich is a city that is colorful, “very vibrant and lively, even
though it is a historic destination,” says Aurelia Carlen, area
manager for Americas, at Zürich Tourism. Known for its
collection of spas and resorts, museums and galleries, along
with stunning outdoor scenery, this city is the perfect place
to disconnect from your busy schedule, reconnect with the
outdoors, and challenge your mind with history and art.
Zurich is a rather small city with only about 440,000
inhabitants. “It’s more like a village, but with a very high
density of cultural and gastronomic options, surrounded
by beautiful nature,” says Carlen. Many of the experiences
available are a blend of indoor/outdoor activities that guests
crave during the summer months. “Visitors will love cruises
on Lake Zurich and river Limmat. There are 18 swimming
areas within city limits and also plenty of garden terraces
and lakeview restaurants,” says Carlen.
Art lovers must plan a trip to one of Zurich’s biggest museums.
The Museum Rietberg displays thousands of traditional and
contemporary arts and cultures from Asia, Africa, the Americas,
and more. After spending a pleasant evening absorbing the
thriving art and historical scene in Zurich, guests can often
find traditional dishes, such as “Zürich Geschnetzeltes, which
is sliced veal in a creamy sauce with Rösti; Swiss macaroons,

all over the globe spend their time helping clients with just that: crafting
the perfect arrangements for the most elegant of wardrobes.
Family-business owner Andy Popkin leads Inspired Closets in
the Philadelphia metropolitan area. After working primarily in
carpentry, Popkin and his wife, Amy, bought a home in Bucks
County that needed organizational renovations — there, they both
discovered a love for building masterful closet spaces.
They start with in-home consultations and discussions to prepare,
well before the installment begins. After finalizing a plan to ensure
that everything has a place, Popkin and team use a 360-degree view
design software to show clients a mockup of their upcoming space.
Another closet-creating brand, Casa Design Group, works with
their manufacturing partner, Molteni & C, to create sophisticated
closets in the Boston area and beyond. The company began as an
Italian design furniture showroom, and expanded over the years as
they discovered their client’s consistent needs for high-quality closets.

Both teams highlight features that they value in

Mixed with the lighting, catering to the specific
vision of the client is paramount.
“There is no better feeling than seeing a closet

and designer Elydia Riley. Many of their clients enjoy
utilizing specified dimmed lighting for their closets,
to accommodate for any mood or time of day.
There are plenty of options when it comes to
customizing this space in the home — function
and ease are the first priority, Popkin and Riley note.
But most of all, both companies stress the importance
of showcasing every client’s personality within this space.
“Closets are among the most desired features for
home buyers,” Popkin notes. “Maybe it’s a lighted
display of shoes, or pictures of their family on top of
the built-in dresser, or a center island with a beautiful
bouquet of flowers.”
More and more homeowners are converting
bedrooms or other rooms into closets. Space is a
premium and clients want to make the most of it.
