The actress stands in the doorway leading down to the
root cellar. The electricity goes out. The audience rumble
begins: "Don’t go down there!"
Why does this Halloween movie cliché work every
time? My theory is that we have all had the creeps in our
own home at one time or another.
That is what propelled our staff to create a "Halloween
Around the House" theme for this year’s special Halloween issue of Just CrossStitch.
Starting at the front door and ending in the garden
outside, readers will roam through a house and garden
filled with spooky surprises.
And if the movie scene is a cliché, the designs
you will find in this issue are originals—even
those that are based on a traditional theme.
A ghost floating like steam from a latte, a
bottle fly emerging from a pear, and a bloodshot eyeball are some of
the creepy ornaments
dreamed up by creative
designers.
In addition to
ornaments, you can
stitch pillows and
pictures depicting some of the things you really, really don’t want
to find lurking in the shadows of your home. For
example, a nest full of mice, a bottle of green poison,
and spiders, spiders and more spiders!
You will also find some not-so-scary squatters for your
house. We have little witch fairies, jolly round pumpkins,
and lots of birds and birdhouses.
We hope you have as much fun looking at
the photographs and stitching the designs as
we enjoyed putting together this annual
Halloween treat.
And about that girl at the top of the stairs
in our classic horror show, for once she heeded
the movie audience’s warning and didn’t walk
down those stairs!
Stay in stitches!
Every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy and completeness
of the instructions in this magazine. However, we cannot be responsible

those specified in the instructions, or for variations in individual work.

Hand-baste one piece of
batting to reverse side of one
piece of coordinating fabric
for front.

Center black braid over grosgrain ribbon and hand-sew in
place. Sew beads to black trim
using photo for reference.

Finishing Materials & Instructions
• Black felt
• 11" length black pompom fringe trim
• Polyester fiberfill
• Small piece of lightweight cardboard
• 4" wooden embroidery hoop
• Black acrylic paint
• Paintbrush
• Hot-glue gun
Separate hoop pieces and trace
around outer hoop onto cardboard; cut
out circle. Using cardboard circle as a
template, trace circle onto black felt; cut
out felt. Set aside.
Paint exterior of outer hoop pieces
black; let dry completely.
Press stitched piece from reverse
side, straightening as much as possible.
Center the stitched design on top of
the inside piece of hoop; then, positioning screw at center top, carefully
push the outer rim in place. Tighten
the screw to secure.
Trim excess fabric on the back of the
hoop so that it fits nicely tucked into
the back of the hoop. Gently hot-glue
edges into place on the back of the
hoop, taking care not to get glue on the
back of the stitched design.
Add a small amount of fiberfill behind the stitched piece to fill the cavity
of the hoop so that design lies flat.
Hot-glue the cardboard circle onto
the back of the hoop; hot-glue felt
circle onto cardboard.
Starting at the top of the hoop,
hot-glue pompom trim around edges
of hoop, forming a loop at the top for
hanging. Trim excess trim as needed. f

Work running stitch over two threads
using one strand 158/45473.
Finishing Materials & Instructions
• 91/2" square coordinating fabric for

• Two 91/2" squares coordinating cotton
fabric for lining
• 24" coordinating silk cord
• Metal chain purse handle with clasps
• 2 jump rings
• Double-hole plastic cord lock toggle
• Coordinating sewing thread
• Sewing machine (optional)
Press stitched piece from reverse side,
straightening as much as possible. Trim
stitched piece to a 91/2" square.
For lining, fold under top edge of each
piece of lining fabric 1/4". Press. Fold
under 1/4" again and stitch along pressed
edge. Place lining pieces right sides
together, and stitch one side using a 1/4"
seam allowance. Press seam.
For the outer bag, fold and stitch the
top edge of the backing fabric and stitched
piece in the same manner as the lining.
Place backing fabric over stitched piece,
right sides together, and stitch one side
using a 1/4" seam allowance. Press seam.
Flip outer bag so right side is facing up.
Place lining right sides together with
outer bag. Stitch one side together using
a 1/4" seam allowance, stopping 1" from
the top. Press seam.
Fold so that wrong sides of outer bag
and lining are together. Pin edges to
keep even. To make the casing for drawstring, measure 1" from top of stitched
area and mark a line across the length;
baste pieces together along line. Measure
1/2" above basting line. Baste along this
line, making sure that the outer bag and
lining are straight. Stitch pieces together
along basting lines, leaving a 2" opening
on both ends.
Fold the piece so that right sides of
outer bag are together. Stitch bottom and
remaining side, stopping at lower basting
line. Turn right side out. Insert silk cord
into casing; insert lock toggle onto cord.
Tie knots in each end and gather bag as
desired. Turn in each top end of unfinished fabric 1/4" and hand-sew closed.
Sew jump ring to sides of bag 11/2" from
top. Connect metal handle to jump rings
with clasps. f

Shaded portion indicates chart overlap.
Stitch Count: 20H x 232W
Design Size: 11/4" x 141/2"
Instructions: Cross stitch over two
threads using two strands of floss. Work
1/4 cross stitch where small symbols appear using two strands of floss.
Backstitch over two threads using one
strand 3371/45351.
Finishing Materials & Instructions
• 2" x 16" piece 32-count black Belfast
linen from Zweigart®*
• 1cm bronze jump ring
• Bronze jewelry clasp
• Four 8mm red glass bicone beads
• Gold metallic embroidery floss
• Hand-sewing needle
• Beading needle
• Coordinating sewing thread
• Sewing machine (optional)
Press stitched piece from reverse side,
straightening as much as possible. Trim
stitched piece to 1/2" from stitching on
all sides. Place stitched piece over linen
backing right sides together and pin in
place.
Stitch along long and short sides
using a 1/4" seam allowance and leaving
2" opening for turning. Trim piece close
to stitching except for unstitched area
(to avoid excessive fraying when piece is
turned right side out). Clip corners. Turn
piece right side out through opening;
press. Hand-stitch opening closed.
Sew jewelry clasp to one end of
choker. Measure neck, then sew jump
ring to opposite end of choker to fit.
To make bead strings, cut one 22"
length of metallic floss and fold in half.
Holding the folded end of the thread,
thread the beading needle so that a loop
is at one end and ends are even. Move
the needle toward the loose ends, leaving
a 4" tail.
Thread one red bead onto needle
and onto floss. When the bead is near
the loop end, pull needle through the
loop and gently pull, creating a knot on
the bead. Thread on another bead and
when it’s near the first, bring needle up
through the bottom and gently pull; the
second bead will be knotted on top of the
first. Repeat for the third bead.
Attach red beads to desired length
to center back of choker, near the seam
line.
Create a shorter single strand for
remaining bead and attach. f

Finishing Instructions
Twisted-Cording
Instructions
Materials
• Embroidery floss, pearl cotton or other
fiber to complement stitchery.
Note: To determine amount needed, see
step 1. Refer to ornament color code for
specific color and fiber used.
• Mini cording drill
Note: Cording can be made by one person;
however, the procedure can be awkward at
times, especially when dealing with long
lengths of floss—an extra set of hands is
always helpful.
1. To determine the amount of floss
needed, multiply by three the desired
length of the cording, making sure to
include any length needed for hangers
when finishing ornaments. Place all lengths
of floss together, and tie a knot in each end.
2. Slip one knotted end of floss onto
hook of cording drill. Slip other knotted
end over a small knob. Pull drill so that
floss is taut. Operate drill in a forward
direction. Floss will begin to twist.
Continue twisting until floss is very tightly
twisted and is about to twist up on itself.
3. Carefully remove knotted end from
drill hook, being extremely careful not
to let go of end and keeping twisted
floss taut. Place hook of cording drill in
center of length of twisted floss, and place
knotted end on knob, still keeping floss
taut. Operate drill in a reverse direction
until desired twist for cording is achieved.
Remove drill. Remove ends from knob,
and secure with another knot.
Flat-Ornament
Finishing Instructions
Materials
• Padded mounting board
• Fabric-marking pencil
• Straight pins
• Sewing machine (optional)
1. Measure desired distance (1/8"–1")
from stitching on all sides and draw a
line this distance from edge of design all
around, staying on grain line of fabric
when possible. Do not cut fabric. Place
ornament over a piece of backing fabric
(right sides together) and pin layers
together along edge of stitching.
2. Sew around ornament along drawn
line, leaving bottom of ornament open.
Trim layers to seam allowances of 1/4".
Trim corners to seam allowances of 1/8".
Turn ornament to right side.
3. Using ornament as a pattern, cut
mounting board. Insert mounting board
into ornament and sew opening closed.
4. Attach trim and hanger.

“Every serious stitcher needs a Microsun lamp”
– Susan Rhein, Albuquerque, NM
Susan Rhein of Albuquerque, NM is an award
winning cross stitch artist. Susan works ten or more
hours a day to create breathtaking pieces of cross
stitch art which are admired across the country. The
life of a cross stitch artist takes its toll, however, and
doing so much detailed work each day used to lead to
Susan experiencing eye strain and fatigue.
To help reduce these symptoms, Susan began to
research and purchase lamps designed specifically for
those who need to do this type of close work. “Over
many years, I have tried a lot of specialty lamps out
there that market themselves for people like felters or
stitchers; anybody that uses their eyes significantly for
that reason.” But none of those lamps reduced her eye
strain or improved color contrast or depth perception,
even when she used multiple lamps.
Susan had nearly given up hope when she read an
ad in a magazine about Microsun Lamps. As soon as
her Microsun lamp arrived and she switched it on, she
said that the difference between her Microsun Lamp
and the other lamps she had purchased was “night and
day.” “It was much easier on my eyes,” she said, “There
really is nothing else out there that comes even close
to the value that I put in my Microsun lamps.”
“Cross stitching without my Microsun lamp
would be like working without my glasses.”
