While the rest if the world. sleeps. Santa makes his annual rounds, pausing
in the moonlight atop each house to choose, just the right toys Jor the
children's stockings below. It is said that the custom of hanging Christmas
stockings by the chimney stems from the time St. Nicholas helped a poor
father who couldn I provide marriage dowries for his three daughters. As the
legend goes, the good saint, in an effort to remain anonymous, went to
thii home in the middle of the night and tossed three bags of gold down
the chimney. Miraculously, a hag landed in each of the girls’ stockings,
which had been hung from the mantel to dry. Since that time,
children the world over have pinned up their stockings and awaited
his late-night visit with hopefulness and excitement.

As uviter s first snowflakes drift to l fie ground, memories are
stirred of those childhood days spent sculpting the perfect snowman.
One can almost hear the laughter oj children as their mitten-clad
hands roll and pat the soft snow into the roly poly shape о a
rosty friend. Adding twig arms and coal-black eyes, they bring him
to life and offer him warmth with a woolen scurf and hat. And
although. l ien jolly companion will soon disappear under the sun's

imaginations and snow, there will always be snowmen.

During the. joyous Christmas season, we cehebiatc
the birth of Jesus and His gift of everlasting life. In
some European countries, His benevolence is personified
by the golden-haired Christfcindf (meaning Christ Child),
an angelic gift-hearer who is believed to be sent
from heaven at Christmastime. Finished as a moon
and a star, these touching designs symbolize
the Child's heavenly connection.

special delivery
Special Delivery (shown on page 8) was
stitched over 2 fabric threads on a 15" x 19"
piece of Driftwood Dublin Linen (25 ct). Three
strands of floss were used for Cross Stitch, 2
strands for gold metallic Backstitch, and 1
strand for all other stitches. It was made into
a gift bag.
For gift bag, trim stitched piece 2" larger
than design on all sides
For cording, cut one 21/2" x 53" bias strip
of coordinating fabric. Lay purchased cord
along center of strip on wrong side of fabric;
matching raw edges, fold strip over cord Using
zipper foot, baste along length of strip close
to cord, trim seam allowance to 1/2". Matching
raw edges and beginning at bottom center of
stitched piece, pin cording to right side of
stitched piece. Ends of cording should overlap
approximately 2"; pin overlapping end out of
the way.
Starting 2" from beginning end of cording
and ending 4" from overlapping end, sew
cording to stitched piece. On overlapping end
of cording, remove 21/2" of basting; fold end
of fabric back and trim cord so that it meets
beginning end of cord Fold end of fabric under
I/2"; wrap fabric over beginning end of
cording Finish sewing cording to stitched
piece. Clip seam allowance at corners. Turn
seam allowance to wrong side of stitched
piece and press.
For bag bottom, cut one 18" square of
fabric. Fold fabric in half from top to bottom
and again from left to right. To mark cutting
line, tie one end of an 11" length of string to
a fabric marking pencil Insert a thumbtack
through the string 8" from pencil. Insert
thumbtack in fabric as shown in Fig. 1 and
mark one-fourth of a circle Follow pencil line
and cut through all thicknesses.
For bag sides, cut one 51" x 39" piece of
fabric. Matching wrong side of stitched piece
to right side of bag, center stitched piece on
fabric with 4" between bottom of stitched
piece and edge of one long side (Fig. 2); pin
in place Using zipper foot and same color
thread as cording, attach stitched piece to bag
by sewing as close as possible to cording,
taking care not to catch fabric of stitched
piece

stitched over 2 fabric threads on 5" squares of
Cream Belfast Linen (32 ct). Two strands of floss
were used for Cross Stitch and 1 strand for
Backstitch.
For each ornament trim stitched piece 1!4”
larger than design on all sides. Cut a piece of
Belfast Linen the same size as stitched piece for
backing. Matching right sides and raw edges, pm
stitched piece and backing fabric together. Using
a У2" seam allowance, sew pieces together
leaving an opening for turning; clip seam
allowance at corners. Turn ornament right side out,
carefully pushing corners outward. Stuff ornament
with polyester fiberfill and sew final closure by
hand
For twisted cord around each ornament, cut
tour 60” lengths of six-strand white floss and four
60" lengths of gold braid. Divide lengths into 2
groups with each group containing 2 lengths of
floss and 2 lengths of braid. Form 2 loops by
folding each group of 4 lengths in half; knot all
ends together. Person A holds knotted ends firmly
Fig. 1). Counting the number of turns, Person В
twists Loop 1 clockwise until loop is tight on finger.
Hold Loop 1 tightly in free hand. Twisting same
number of turns, repeat for Loop 2. Person В
places both loops on same finger and twists them
together counterclockwise one-half the original
number of turns (Fig. 2), and knots 1" from ends
to secure. Beginning and ending at bottom center
of ornament, tack twisted cord around edges of
ornament.
For each hanger, cut three 39" lengths of
sx-strand white floss and one 39" length of gold
braid Divide lengths into 2 groups with 1 group
containing 2 lengths of white floss and the other
group containing 1 length of white floss and 1
length of gold braid Referring to previous
instructions, twist cord. Whipstitch ends of hanger
to top corners of ornament.

Earth Angels (shown on page 26) were each stitched over
2 fabric threads on a 9" x 12" piece of Cream Belfast
L nen (32 ct). Two strands of floss were used for Cross
Stitch and 1 strand for all other stitches except as indicated
in color key. They were made into hanging pillows
For each pillow, trace pattern onto tracing paper; cut
but pattern. Center pattern on wrong side of stitched piece
with top of pattern V/2" above star at top of design. Draw
around pattern with fabric marking pencil. Leaving ’/2"
seam allowance on all sides, cut out pillow Cut a piece
Of Belfast Linen the same size as stitched piece for
backing.
For gold cording, cut one 2" x 30" bias strip of gold
lame. Center cording on wrong side of bias strip; matching
long edges, fold strip over cord. Using zipper foot, baste
along length of strip close to cord; trim seam allowance
to V2". Matching raw edges and beginning on one side,
pin cording to right side of stitched piece, making a %"
clip in seam allowance of cording at each corner. Ends
of cording should overlap approximately 2"; pm
overlapping end out of the way. Starting 2" from beginning
fend of cording and ending 4" from overlapping end, sew
cording to stitched piece. On overlapping end of cording,
remove 2/2" of basting; fold end of fabric back and trim
cord so it meets beginning end of cord. Fold end of fabric
under ’/2"; wrap fabric over beginning end of cording.
Finish sewing cording to stitched piece.
For fabric cording, cut one 2V2" x 30" bias strip of
fabric. Lay purchased cord along center of strip on wrong
side of fabric; matching long edges, fold strip over cord.
Using zipper foot, baste along length of strip close to cord;
trim seam allowance to 3Л". Repeat above instructions
jo sew cording to stitched piece.
With right sides facing and leaving an opening for
turning, use a V2" seam allowance to sew stitched piece
end backing fabric together; trim seam allowances
diagonally at corners. Turn pillow right side out, carefully
pushing corners outward Stuff pillow with polyester fiberfill
and sew final closure by hand.
For tassel, cut 6 yd lengths each of ecru and green six-
strand embroidery floss and gold metallic thread. Wind
the three lengths approximately 35 times around a 3"
square piece of cardboard. Cut an 8" length of green
embroidery floss and insert under all strands at one end
If cardboard; pull t ghtly and tie securely (Fig. 1). Cut floss
and thread at opposite end of cardboard. Do not trim 8"
length of floss.
To wrap tassel, cut an 18" length of green embroidery
floss. Make a 3" loop at one end of the length; lay loop
on tassel as shown in Fig. 2. Beginning 3/i" from top of
tassel and holding loop in place, tightly wrap remainder
of length around tassel 6 times (Fig. 3).
Fig. 2
Place end of length through loop (Fig. 4). Pull other end
of length as indicated by arrow in Fig. 4 to conceal loop
beneath wrapped area; trim ends.
Fig. 4
Evenly trim ends of tassel. Whipstitch top of tassel to
bottom point of pillow; trim ends of 8" length of flops.
For twisted cord hanger, cut two 63" lengths of six-
strand green floss, two 63" lengths of six-strand ecru floss,
and two 63" lengths of fine gold braid. Divide lengths into
2 groups with each group containing 1 length of green
floss, 1 length of ecru floss, and 1 length of braid. Form
2 loops by folding each group of 3 lengths in half; knot
all ends together 1" from ends. Person A holds knotted
ends firmly (Fig. 5). Counting the number of turns, Person
В twists Loop 1 clockwise until loop is tight on finger. Hold
Loop 1 tightly in free hand. Twisting same number of turns,
repeat for Loop 2. Person В places both loops on same
finger and twists them together counterclockwise one-half
the original number of turns (Fig. 6), and knots 1" from
ends to secure. Whipstitch ends of hanger to top corners
of pillow.

* Use one strand of gold metallic
and two strands of 729
t Use two strands for harp strings
and work in long stitches.
Portraits in Miniature designs (shown on page 36) were each stitched over 2 fabric threads on a 7" square
of Raw Belfast Linen (32 ct). Two strands of floss were used for Cross Stitch and 1 strand for all other stitches
except as indicated in color key. They were made into hanging ornaments.
For each ornament, trim stitched piece Г larger than design on all sides. For backing fabric, cut a piece
of Raw Belfast Linen the same size as stitched piece. Matching right sides and raw edges, pin stitched piece
and backing fabric together. Leaving an opening for turning, use a ’/2" seam allowance to sew pieces together;
trim seam allowance diagonally at corners. Turn ornament right side out, carefully pushing corners outward
Stuff ornament with polyester fiberfill and sew final closure by hand.
For twisted cord around each ornament, use colors of floss to match stitched piece. To find desired length
to cut floss, add 5" to outside measurement of ornament and multiply by 3. Using determined measurement,
cut two groups of floss, each group containing 3 lengths of six-strand floss. (Note: If using gold metallic thread,
cut two strands the determined length to use with the other floss colors.) Form 2 loops by folding each group
of floss in half; knot all ends together 1" from ends. Person A holds knotted ends firmly (Fig. 1). Counting
the number of turns, Person В twists Loop 1 clockwise until loop is tight on finger. Hold Loop 1 tightly in free
hand Twisting same number of turns, repeat for Loop 2. Person В places both loops on same finger and twists
them together counterclockwise one-half the original number of turns (Fig. 2), and knots 1" from ends to secure.
Beginning and ending at bottom center of ornament, start ГЛ " from one end of twisted cord and tack twisted
cord around edges of ornament. Fold one end of twisted cord over the other end; tack to back of ornament.
For hanger, run a 10" length of nylon line through backing fabric at top center of ornament; knot ends together.

Matching right sides and raw edges, use
a V?" seam allowance to sew one 18%"
strip to each side of stitched piece; press.
Matching right sides and raw edges, use
a V2" seam allowance to sew 13%"
strips to top and bottom edges of stitched
piece; press.
For blue polka dot fabric border, cut
two 2% "wx 20"I blue polka dot fabric
strips and two 2% "w x 151/2 "I blue polka
dot fabric strips. Matching right sides and
raw edges, use a 7г" seam allowance
to sew one 20" blue polka dot strip to
each side of red fabric border; press.
Matching right sides and raw edges, use
a 7г" seam allowance to sew 157г" blue
polka dot fabric strips to top and bottom
of red fabric border; press.
For backing, cut a piece of fabric same
size as wall hanging front. Cut a piece of
low-loft polyester batting same size as
backing fabric Matching right sides and
raw edges, place backing fabric on wall
hanging front; place batting on backing
fabric. Pin layers together.
Beginning at bottom edge and leaving
an opening for turning, use a 7г" seam
allowance to sew layers together. Trim
corners diagonally and turn right side out,
carefully pushing corners outward.
Whipstitch opening closed.
For hanging sleeve, cut a 3" x 141/2"
piece of fabric. Press edges ]A" to wrong
side; press edges Уд" to wrong side
again. Machine stitch pressed edges in
place. With one long edge of hanging
sleeve just below top edge of backing,

lime reflecting the spirit of their subjects and
conveying a sense of warmth ami vita fit у.
Through them, our fondest memories aie stirred
especially during the sentimental holiday season.
The Victorians left us a rich legacy of hofiday
portraiture in their beautiful Christmas cards
and omamentaf scraps. Perhaps it was their
fovc of Christmas and the Yule tide characters
that prompted them to commit their favorite
likenesses to canvas. Among them we find. the
Hofy Infant and the host of angefs who
heralded His birth, wide-eyed children hanging
up their stockings, a wealth of jovial Santas
stately reindeer, and an assortment of kittle
helpers ever ready to come to Santa’s aid.
Though these beaut ifuf scenes are from another
era, they have proven themselves to be time fess
works of art.
We still love these same wonderful characters
today, and year after year, we take delight in
bringing out their portraits at Christmastime to
decorate our homes. 1 he enduring symbols have
become like old friends who provide a precious
bond with other generations who s aired our
love for the season.
In this book, we have adapted many of these
beloved holiday characters to cross stitch from
our collection of antique postcards and scraps.
It is our wish that the designs will fill your
home with Christmas cheer and make
memorable gifts for your family and friends.
May you experience the merriment of the
season as you create your own delightful
company of Christmas companions!
