Victorian doll's house Recreate the ornate living quarters of a Victorian family of dolls. Joan Elliott has designed this splendid mansion in exquisite detail the elaborate engravings on a sumptuous dinner table or the tiny silver fittings that embellish a lavish bathroom. So much care goes into finishing the houses that I had to design my stitched piece in minute detail to do the real thing justice. I've based my Stitcher's guide This Victorian doll's house is stitched on 28-count antique white evenweave over two threads of the fabric in 35 different shades of stranded cotton. Joan has used cross stitch in two strands of cotton plus a few fractional stitches. Backstitch in one strand of cotton adds definition to the design in three different shades, and a few French knots worked in one strand add detail. This densely stitched design is recommended for experienced stitchers. : How to stitch the ; Victorian doll's house ' Find the Centre of your fabric by folding it in half both horizontally and vertically. Follow the 'O' gridlines : on the chart to find its centre and start ; stitching from here, working in the ; centre of the fabric. 2 Work the cross stitch over two threads of the fabric using two strands of ; cotton. For each tiny symbol you see on the chart, work a fractional stitch. Work the backstitch using one strand of cotton. Three different : shades are used so check the key ; carefully to see which you need. Add the French knots using one strand of cotton. Check over your finished stitching and prepare for making up. Victorian style abode. The fancy style of the homes gave me lots of scope to recreate decorative trimmings on the outside and exquisite furnishings on the inside. It was a joy to design - I hope you love every stitch. Victorian doll's house Top right This design uses a lot of French knots - they form the handles on the drawers and cupboards, the detail on the rocking horse and teddy, the ends of the pullcords, the clock face and the pattern on the cloth in the attic chest. If you are not confident working French knots, practise first on a spare piece of fabric. Bring the needle up through the fabric and, keeping your thread taut, wrap the thread around the needle twice. Take the needle back down again just slightly away from where you brought it up, pulling it slowly until the knot is sitting on top of the fabric. Make sure the thread remains taut throughout. For more information on working French knots, and to see a detailed diagram, turn to page 64. 8 Cross Stitch Gold

Victorians often put all floors of their homes to good use, which is why I've decorated in detail every room. They used them as a way to emphasise their social status by separating the upper class family from the working class servants. The attic was usually reserved for the servants quarters and was not as lavishly decorated as the first floor. I've added a stairwell leading from the kitchen as the servants were also often required to use different stairs. ! I've used a few different techniques lb' to give my doll's house depth and 11; dimension. I spent a lot of time designing я.; each bit of furniture in perspective, ж keeping items at the back of the rooms И: smaller than the pieces at the front. I £j have also used shading to give subjects sb a better 3D finish. You'll see evidence of this on the bath, the green sofas, the vase and the mother's skirt. You may also notice I've used quite a few French knots in this design - but all with good reason, I promise! I think they give the finished piece lots of great texture. I've used them for the handles on the drawers and cupboards, the chest cloth and the toys' eyes. Joan Elliott has another timeless children's design in issue 55 of Cross Stitch Gold. This gorgeous shelf of toys comes complete with an alphabet which makes it perfect to stitch and turn into a personalised sign for a bedroom door. Little ones of both sexes will love the fun characters, which include a pretty rag doll, colourful jack-in-the-box, adorable teddy bear and marching toy soldier. Don't miss it! 10 Cross Stitch Gold

However, if you want to preserve your stitching for as long as possible it is best to treat stains on the fabric with a direct spray stain remover as soon as they occur. We then recommend hand washing your table linen in a bowl of tepid water and a gentle detergent, before rinsing it in cold water. Visit www.lakeland.co.uk or call 01539 488 100 for a good selection of detergents. 40 Cross Stitch Gold
