FOREWORD Shin Nihongo no Kiso Japanese Kanji Workbook I (English Version) is the first kanji study book in the Shin Nihongo no Kiso series. The Shin Nihongo no Kiso introductory-level books and tapes were developed principally to enable technical trainees visiting Japan for short periods to study Japanese conversation. Their ease of use by both students and teachers and their effectiveness in developing a firm grounding in basic Japanese earned them an excellent reputation, and they rapidly became popular. They are now enjoying even wider use than the original Nihongo no Kiso series on which they are based. For some time now. instructors and students of Japanese using the Shin Nihongo no Kiso series both inside and outside Japan have been asking us to provide them with kanji study materials. We therefore decided to respond to these requests and publish this workbook to help students acquire a basic knowledge of kanji while they study elementary Japanese using Shin Nihongo no Kiso I . The book aims to help students become competent in reading and writing the kanji contained in Levels 4 and 3 of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test and develop the basic ability necessary for proceeding to Level 2. We are confident that students will find the workbook an indispensable companion to Shin Nihongo no Kiso. In preparing this workbook, we received valuable advice from organizations such as the Association for Overseas Technical Scholarship, the Asian Students' Cultural Association and the Technological Promotion Association (Thai-Japan), as well as from Japanese-language instructors in teaching establishments both at home and abroad. I should like to take this opportunity of thanking all of these people here. We plan to publish a sequel to this workbook, entitled Shin Nihongo no Kiso Japanese Kanji Workbook П (English Version), to be used in conjunction with Shin Nihongo no Kiso П. The advice and support of students and teachers in this endeavour would be greatly appreciated. September 1992 Hajime Fukumoto President, ЗА Corporation
LAYOUT AND USE 1 . Layout The workbook consists of Part 1 and Part D . Each lesson occupies four pages. The workbook is arranged in two parts designed to help students naturally appreciate the ideographic, as opposed to alphabetical, nature of the kanji and learn them easily. Part I introduces some basic kanji, explaining their origins and formation, while Part П teaches further basic kanji selected from the vocabulary presented in Shin Nihongo no Kiso I. Each lesson consists of the following four pages: 1. Readings and stroke-order 2. How to write the kanji (by copying models) 3. Reading practice 4. Writing practice In Part I , the reading and writing practice (on pages 3 and 4) consists mainly of isolated words, while Part П gives practice in reading and writing whole sentences based on the patterns presented in Shin Nihongo no Kiso I. Part П was prepared by selecting the kanji needed by technical trainees from the vocabulary appearing in Shin Nihongo no Kiso I. It includes as many as possible of the kanji taught in the first three academic years at Japanese elementary schools, as well as those needed for Levels 4 to 3 of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test. Students who master the kanji in the workbook should therefore be able to read and write mixed kanji and kana material to elementary school 3rd-grade level, pass Level 4 of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test and be well on their way to achieving Level 3. 2. Order of Presentation As mentioned earlier, Part I aims to accustom students to the concept of kanji and the general principles of their formation. Because of this, it starts with kanji of a highly picto- graphic nature, even when they are relatively complex. The kanji are therefore not always presented in stroke-count order. However, while those presented in Lessons 1 to 3 may be composed of a fairly large number of strokes, this does not mean that they are difficult to learn. On the contrary, they have been carefully selected as being highly effective in training the student's eye and accustoming him or her to the kanji visually.
3. Radicals When the radicals are traced back to their origins, most are found to be pictographic kanji in their own right. When students go on to learn more kanji bv themselves after finishing this workbook, a knowledge of the history of the kanji and their basic building-blocks, the radicals, will help them and enhance their understanding of new kanji. This is why the workbook introduces the radicals in detail. 4. Number of kanji Each lesson in this workbook introduces six new kanji. Part I contains 17 lessons and introduces 102 kanji, while Part П contains 25 lessons and introduces a further 150, for a total of 252. 5. Readings All the on and kun readings of a kanji are given in the lesson in which it is first introduced. When a kanji used to form a verb has different readings for the transitive and intransitive forms, both readings are shown. Voiced readings in compounds are shown only where there are on readings. Words used in examples are provided with English equivalents. The on readings of the principal characters are given in katakana, while their kun readings are given in hiragana. Readings of examples are all given in hiragana. Owing to space limitations, examples are limited to six per character. Verbs are shown in their dictionary forms. Special readings are underlined, while readings not included in the elementary school syllabus are enclosed in round brackets. Special readings listed in the Appendix to the Joyo Kanji are shown by an asterisk. This has been done in order to demonstrate the great variety of readings that exist, and it is not necessary for the student to attempt to learn the special readings straight away. Stroke order is shown in a maximum of six steps in the small boxes beside each principal character. 6. When to Start Using this Book This workbook is intended for students who have already mastered hiragana and katakana. It assumes that students have already learnt the basics of stroke order in the process of learning how to write hiragana and katakana, but it is best if they revise this by means of katakana before embarking on the study of kanji. Before starting to teach kanji to students for the first time, it is advisable to see that
they master hiragana and katakana while proceeding to at least Lesson 13 of Shin Nihon- go no Kiso I . Trying to teach kanji to students at the same time as having them learn hiragana, katakana and the sentence patterns will overload them and is to be avoided. 7. Practice System Part I gives students practice in reading and writing kanji by means of compounds, words and short sentences, while Part П drills them by means of short passages. Words are separated by spaces to facilitate reading, and furigana are used to show the readings of kanji not introduced in the lessons. Furigana are also used to show the readings of personal and place names on their first occurrence, and later lessons give further practice in reading and writing kanji introduced earlier in the book.

*Л4^4 chiisai (small) Okurigana are also sometimes used to clarify ambiguous readings. For example: jr. san (three) z^r> mittsu (three) 4 Number of strokes and stroke order (how to draw kanji) (1) kanji consist of lines and points drawn in separate, single actions. Lines should be drawn in the proper way, as shown below: 1) 2) 3) — »• i » Л — (one) -^ (two) + (ten) ЛI (river) A(person) ^K(tree) 4) 5) 6) — » 1 1 — > Jj U (mouth) В (day) -t (seven) lL (mountain) f (child) — * 1 Я (month) (2) A line or point drawn in a single action is known as a "stroke" (kaku) 1) One-stroke kanji : — (one) 2) Two-stroke kanji : H (- П) (two) 3) Three-stroke kanji : ± (- + ±)(soil) 4) Four-stroke kanji : *K (-" t A A) (tree) + (- +)(ten) VJ {\ П U) (mouth) Я (J Л Я Я) (month) (3) A kanji is formed by drawing its lines and points in the prescribed order. This order is known as its "stroke order" (hitsujun). Even complex characters can be drawn easily if the proper stroke order is followed. 1) From top to bottom -—_ (three) 5) Outside enclosures first 2) From left to right J | ] (river) 6) Leftward diagonals first ИЭ (four) У\^ (person) 3)Central lines first /J\ (small) 7) Vertical transecting lines after Гр (middle) 4) Horizontal lines first ~4~~ (ten) 8) Horizontal transecting lines after ~r£ (woman)
1 Pictographs The earliest kanji were simple depictions of the objects and phenomena they represent. These simple hieroglyphic kanji are known as shOkei moji (pictographs). (mountain) в (sun) n (moon) ffl (rice field) (tree) ^л^ ^ г©: О 0 Q в ■1 ) > $ я ч "7/тгтг AT7! /T^ тт~1 $fXKfc
u (mouth) (eye) (ear) л (person) (child) (woman) W w ъ/ у а f^ (D>Q) @ H ?ни 1Ti?f f J, J? f i'*
2 Simple Ideographs Abstract ideas such as actions, situations, relationships, positions and numbers were assigned forms and shapes in order to express them with kanji. Such kanji are called shiji moji (simple ideographs). They are also hieroglyphic characters.
3 Compound Ideographs and Phonetic-Ideographic Characters 1 . Compound ideographs (combinations of elements with different meanings) These are compound characters formed by combining elements with different meanings. They are called kaii moji (compound ideographs). В (sun) ^K (tree) + Я (moon) Щ akarui (bright) + A (person) ifc yasumu (rest) ^K (tree) + 0 (sun) Ж higashi (east)
2 . Phonetic-ideographic characters (combinations of elements representing sound and meaning) New characters were made by combining one character representing a meaning with another representing a sound. Such characters are called keisei moji (phonetic-ideographic characters). П (gate) + О (mouth) И tou (ask) П (gate) 4- Щ (ear) kiku (ask, listen)
4 Formation and Classification of Characters (Radicals) 1 . The component elements of kanji Most modern kanji are combinations of different elements and can therefore be broken down into two or more parts, as shown below: (1) Hen ^ The left-hand part of a kanji that can be split in two vertically (2) Tsukuri The right-hand part of a kanji that can be split in two vertically (3) Kanmuri The upper part. (4) W* (5) Ashi The lower part Tare ш iH (6) On top like a kanmuri but trailing down to the lower left. NyO A variation of ashi, extending from left to lower right. (7) Kamae An enclosure completely surrounding an inner part. 2 . Classification of kanji Kanji are generally classified in dictionaries according to their component elements. Although compound characters often consist of a part representing their meaning and another representing their sound, they are usually classified under the part representing the meaning. The parts of the kanji on which their classification is based are known as bushu (radicals). In this lesson, we will introduce the most common radicals from among the many that exist. For students of Japanese, radicals are the key to the meaning of individual kanji and are also a good way of remembering them. You have just begun your study of kanji. Take your time and study them accurately, using their radicals as clues to their meaning. 3 . Radicals (1) Hen Kanji consisting of a hen (left-hand) part and a tsukuri (right-hand) part are usually classified under their hen radical.
Hen radical ■ч sanzui Meaning water Example M (sea) 2) 4 ninben 3) t tehen 4) * kihen 5) ^ gonben \ 4 \ ^ У person 4Ф- (body) К hand Щ (hold) H * tree 5K *L (desk) word (represents needles spewing out of a mouth, and hence indicates words or speech) H (speech. ¥>%-% \j
