ONE COOL CAT
With an overhead height of almost 13ft in the owner’s cabin, Tecnomar’s
radical new multihull is a realization of an ambitious vision, says Katia Damborsky
When The Italian Sea Group revealed the renderings
of a 141ft catamaran built under the Tecnomar brand,
it left many wondering how close it could come to
reality. As it turns out, very close. The real thing, which
debuted to a buzz commensurate with its epic
proportions in Monaco, has the same huge glass panels
and commitment to curves that the computergenerated images had shown. Architect Gian Marco
Campanino and Mattia Piro of The Italian Sea Group
made liberal use of futuristic styling and finished
enormous spaces in shades of champagne and platinum
on the interior. This space-shifting cat matched its
owner’s vision for something that was completely
different so well that he named it This is It – his reaction
when he saw the renderings. The cat is slated for an
early 2024 delivery. theitalianseagroup.com

sales (above 78ft) is returning to
familiar seasonal trends, with a
slight dip in activity during the
summer months before ramping up
into the fall boat show season.
“Traditionally, July and August
are quieter months, but we sort-of
forgot that because sales activity
was heightened throughout the
pandemic and all normal buying
patterns disappeared,” Green says.
BOATPro indicates that the
collective value of sales measured
€4.4 billion ($4.65bn) from January
to September 2023, a 6.3 percent
decrease compared to the same
period last year, and a 25.4 percent
decrease compared to the same
period in 2021. However, when

the first nine months of 2023 has
improved from a benchmark of
€3.2 billion in 2019, suggesting
that the demand for superyachts is
continuing an upward trajectory.
The number of superyachts sold
in 2023 (from January to September)
also appears to be growing against
pre-pandemic figures from 2019,
but at a much slower pace than the
corresponding sales value. Fraser
Australia broker Eugenio Cannarsa
warns that the disparity might be an
indication of mounting inflation.
According to Bob Denison of
Denison Yachting, the rate of yacht
sales has indeed slowed compared
to previous years, but it is only a
matter of time before the market
picks up again. “Part of the natural
brokerage cycle is owners desiring
to get a new boat that is larger, newer
or in some way different to their
previous one, which many of them
did during [the pandemic],” he says.
“We expect that cycle will begin
again as early as next year [2024],
meaning there will be a lot more
inventory on the market, which will
create a lot more [sales] activity.”
Denison adds that more yachts
on the market may inspire price
drops and lead to a bullish market.
But for now, the overall value of the
superyacht industry appears to be
enjoying a stable recovery into 2024.

here was a palpable
tension felt at this
year’s
Cannes
Yachting Festival.
“Everyone was a bit worried about
how the 2023 show would measure
up against 2022, which was really
something special,” Massimo
Perotti, CEO of Sanlorenzo, said
during Cannes. “But now that we’re
here, I can say that we are all able to
breathe a sigh of relief over how well
this year has performed so far.”
Will Green, Princess Yachts CEO,
agrees, saying the slight pessimism
he experienced in the lead-up to
Cannes was swept away upon
arrival, and the industry feels
“properly back to normal.”

for a refit and refresh that will
see the yacht’s “deck geometry”
reconfigured and the sail
plan modernized. The cabin
configuration will also undergo
some improvements, ensuring
she is kept in top condition and
ready to maintain her position

BOW’S UP
Increasing efficiency on existing hulls is one of the hottest trends in refits. The 190ft Abeking &
Rasmussen formerly known as La dy Sheridan, a well-known vessel with exterior design by Donald
Starkey delivered in 2007, has been reborn as Amaral . She was sold in 2021 after an interior refit
by Bonville Associates of Fort Lauderdale. Following her sale, the yacht received another refit at
Derecktor Shipyards’ Dania facility that, among important updates, added a bulbous bow. The new
appendage is designed to improve fuel efficiency and seakeeping.

From the deck up
The 143ft Costa Magna is in Istanbul for a
full-scale strip-down and rebuild. The refit will
include brand-new teak decks and a full refinish
of the hull, which is being stripped down to the
metal. The goal is a more modern-looking take
on the original 1986 lines. “Having embarked
on an incredible 40-year worldwide journey,
the yacht is now back in Istanbul for a full refit,”
her captain says.

Out with the old
Designed to be a “modern spin on an explorer vessel,” Nuri now has a new look
to match her new name. The 133ft Cantiere delle Marche was originally christened
RJ and had a darker, more modern interior theme. A year after delivery she checked
into Pendennis’s Vilanova, Spain, site for an overhaul courtesy of Boutsen Design,
and the result is a calm, tawny theme with coffee-colored leather upholstery on the
interior and touches of blue on the exterior. As well as cosmetic changes, the team
has also added a Jacuzzi on the sundeck, putting her in a premium position for
her next charter season with Y.CO.

Technical differences
Five months was all that Roscioli Yachting Center
in Fort Lauderdale needed to take years off the 132ft
Feadship Cetacea. The yard drilled deep into the
yacht’s engine room, reconditioning the entire
driveline and completing a full electric assessment.
The refit also overhauled the stabilizers and
installed a new IMO-approved sewage treatment
system. Classic lines and vintage charm remain,
with an altogether younger and healthier heart.

Amico’s Genoa site has been busy with the 10-month refit
of 205ft Apogee. The yacht was repainted from bow to
stern and had her teak decks replaced and leveled, with
the overarching aim of keeping her one of the charter
fleet’s favorites. The refit also saw all stainless steel
polished, exterior upholstery and awnings renewed, deck
tables and furniture revarnished and anchor chains and
external marbles replaced. In addition, the limo and jet
tenders were fully refurbished, also receiving paint jobs.
Extensive extension
The 208ft schooner Athos,
originally launched from Holland
Jachtbouw in 2010, re-emerged
from Huisft, Royal Huisman’s
refit arm, a brand new yacht last
year. The refit team, including
original designer Andre Hoek,
implemented a complex 4ft
extension to the canoe stern. “The
multiple modifications have been
beautifully done,” said project
manager Jeremy “Bear” Wynne of
Wynne Projects. “The additions
and modifications have not only
improved the functionality of the
yacht, they have also enhanced the
appearance.” Our June 2023 issue
explores the owner’s take on the
substantial refit.

Lusben, Azimut-Benetti’s refit branch, took in the 132ft Inace explorer Lady Jade for a refit that
focused largely on her stern. The yacht had already been given an extra 20ft by Alia Yachts in
2018; the most recent works focused on optimizing that space by reducing the size of the quarter
boards to give the aft cockpit a more open feel. New interior decor, a longer flybridge overhang
and a change of color, taking her back to midnight blue, round out her list of improvements.
