В некотором царстве, в некотором государстве
жил-был мужичок Иван Тимофеевич с хозяюшкою
Ефросинией Поликарповной. Жил он богатой рукой,
всего у них довольно, капитал хороший имели Только
детей нету. Стали просить бога, и время пришло —
родилось детище
Once upon a time in a certain Kingdom lived a peasant
named Ivan Timofeyich with his wife Yefrosinia
Polikarpovna. They were well off and had enough money,
but no children. So they prayed to god and after a little
time when by a baby boy was born..

Да беда: ноги у мальца не ходят
There was only one problem:
the boy couldn't walk.

.. Тридцать лет, да еще три
года сидел Илья сиднем.
For thirty and three years Ilya
sat unable to move.

И поехал в
славный град Киев.
So Ilya rode off to
the glorious city of
Kiev.

От того свиста пожухла трава, деревья к земле
приклонились, цветы лазоревые осыпались.
His whistle made the grass shrivel, the trees bend
down, the blue flowers fall off.

Пошел Илья третьей дорогой — в стольный Киев,
где Идолище поганый князем помыкал.
Ilya took the third road to the capital Kiev, where
the prince was under the thumb of the rile
evil-doer Idolishche.

Стал князь Владимир славить Илью на зависть боярам. Then the prince began to heap praise on Ilya, and the boyars became envious

А тем временем Идолище двинул орду
многочисленную князю отмщать.
Meanwhile. Idolishche had sent a huge horde
to take his vengeance on the prince.
Никого не пощажу!
No quarter to anyone!

Who will protect us?
За землю русскую биться буду!
I’ll fight for the land of Rus!

Glory to Ilya Muromets, hero of Rus!
Nothing at all.
И поехал Илья на заставу богатырскую землю нашу охранять.
Много воды утекло с тех пор, но могучему русскому богатырю
Илье Муромцу славу поют веки-повеки.
Upon which Ilya set out to guard the frontier of our land.
Since that time much water has flown under the bridge, but the
praises of the great Russian hero Ilya Muromets are still sung, as
they will be forever and ever.
