Welcome to our blue issue! I have to say — with no modesty
whatsoever — that were delighted with it. We've never done a themed issue
before because we felt it would be too restrictive creatively. It's hard enough to
pack an issue with a variety that does justice to the wonderful diversity of our
readers without adding artificial parameters.
But as we explored the vast possibilities that unfolded in our imaginations
when we thought ''blue,” we realized that a single issue could only scratch the
surface of creative options. Our thanks to former publisher Judith
Hill for the idea.
’ > Of course, blue's not everybody's favorite color, but research
I 5afs *ts ^ar most popular. The 1999 Roper/Pantone
Consumer Color Preference study found that blue is the
country's fasoritc color, with 15 percent ot those- (rolled
ranking it on top, although men and women preferred blue in
different hues. Interestingly, green and purple, which were the
second and third most popular choices, also have blue in them.
Within this ode to blue, you’ll find an array of shades, treatments, and styles.
Cool and warm blues; light and dark tones; classic and modern styles. We
hope you find a blue note that sings to you — send an e-mail to editor®
beadstylemag.com to let us know what you think.

• helpful reference
I just received my first issue of
BeadStyle, and I’m in love. Whoever
writes the instructions for the
bracelets and carrings is amazing.
The little hints and tips arc so
helpful. In just a week or so, I have
learned so much. My friend and I

simple stuff— for a Celtic festival.

• no complaints here
I was just rereading the May 2007

occurred to me was that, as opposed

has an Internet address in it. This

Update your wardrobe with a
few fantastic pieces — a swingy
jacket with three-quarter-length
sleeves, a bold geometric-print
dress, a rich sweater vest or
sweater dress, or menswear-
inspired shirts or wide-leg
trousers. Gray is a prominent
color this fall; try it in metallic
heather or charcoal. And plaids
are everywhere — coats, tights,
dresses, shoes, handbags, and
caps. In footwear, the menswear
influence is prominent: oxfords
and spectator pumps are key
shoe and boot options. Finally,
the biker look is huge. If you're
not into leather skirts and
jackets, try an accessory like a

Readers' tips to make your beading life easier
1 anti-tarnish storage
jewelry between shows, I roll it in anti-tarnish
cloth. The jewelry doesn't get tangled and the
cloth helps prevent tarnish. One yard cut in
half lengthwise will make two rolls.
For additional tarnish protection, store the
rolls in sealed plastic containers with
anti-tarnish strips. The cloth is available
at most fabric stores.
— Becky Malone, Westminster, CO
2 left-handed complement
When making a necklace with a one-sided
pendant for a left-handed friend, attach the
left side when she wears it.
- Sandra Porter, Vancouver, IVA
3 fluted pans
When I’m working with smaller beads that
come in tubes or small packages, 1 pour them
into metal tartlet pans with fluted edges. The
fluted edges act like funnels for pouring the
beads back into their containers.
— Cheryl Wilson, Blaine, MN
4 corduroy work surface
Instead of throwing old corduroy clothes away,
I cut them into square pieces to use as work
surfaces. The ridges in the fabric arc great for
lining up beads.
- Tess Cysz, Lee, MA
5 foam ear guards
Use a hole punch and craft foam to make easy,
economical ear guards for French carring
center of the foam circle before putting it on
the carring.

Kyanite
Types: Kyanite derives its name from
the Greek word for "blue,” Ifyanos. It can
bean icy, shimmery blue or a rich blue
like sapphire. And although it is usually
pale blue or green, kyanite can also be
black, yellow, white, or gray. Composed
of long, splintery crystals, it has separate
hardness ratings on the vertical and
horizontal axes. The extreme differences
make it difficult to cut.
History: Kyanite has been mined for
at least a century and is sometimes
erroneously called sappare ("sapphire").

encouraging dreams, and dispelling

Origins: Major sources include
Brazil, the United States, Switzerland,
Russia, Serbia, India, Kenya, Burma,
and Australia.
Availability: Kyanite beads are
usually smooth, and the pale shades
are more widely available than the
higher-end deep-blue pieces. Because
the stone is difficult to cut, faceted
beads are rare.
Care: Avoid putting kyanite in rings
or bracelets where it could easily break.
Store your kyanite jewelry carefully so
it won't get scratched. Avoid harsh

Blue opal
At the Bead&Button Show, this strand of
faceted Peruvian opal nuggets caught my eye.
What drew me in was its range of colors: pale yellow,
deep blue-green, and light blue flecked with brown
and dark gray. (How handy that nature did most of
the designing already.) For the earrings, I chose two
stones that were similar in size and shape — I like
that they differ in color. — Naomi Fujimoto
1 necklace • On your work space,
arrange nugget beads, balancing
colors and shapes. Position the largest
nugget so it's off-center. Cut a piece
of beading wire (Basics, p. 112). (My
necklace is 17'/г in./44.5cm.)
2 Center a spacer. On each end, string
a nugget and a spacer, repeating
until the necklace is within 1 in. (2.5cm)
of the finished length. Check the fit as
you string; you may need to change the
placement of some nuggets. End with
a nugget.
3On each end, string a spacer, a
crimp bead, a spacer, and half of a
clasp. Check the fit, and add or remove
beads if necessary. Go back through the
beads just strung and tighten the wire.
Crimp the crimp bead (Basics) and trim
the excess wire.

Turn a blue Christmas
into a thing of beauty.
In keeping with this
issue’s theme, I chose
a multicolored oval and
a teal donut to accent
with blue crystals.
Premade gold tassels
conveniently play up the
yellow, green, and brown
hues in the beads. With
a few quick accents,
gorgeous beads become
cherished ornaments.

A
modern
take on
Simple elements shine in
a contemporary necklace,
bracelet, and earrings
by Jennifer Ortiz
For a sleek geometric necklace,
link bicone crystals and jump
rings. You’ll be making lots of
wrapped loops, so practice
with inexpensive copper
wire (available from
hardware stores) and
refer to Basics, p. 112, if
you need a quick refresher.
1 necklace • Cut a 3-in. (7.6cm) piece
of wire. Make the first half of a
wrapped loop (Basics, p. 112) on one
end. String a bicone crystal and make
the first half of a wrapped loop. Make
25 to 29 bead units, in two colors.
3 Check the fit, and add or remove
bead units or jump rings if
necessary. Complete the wraps on
the end loops.
On each end, open a 3-4mm jump
ring (Basics). Attach the end loop and
half of a clasp. Close the jump ring.
2 Attach one loop of a bead unit to
a soldered jump ring. Attach one
loop of another bead unit to the jump
ring. Attach a soldered jump ring to one
loop. Complete the wraps as you go,
leaving the first loop unwrapped.
Continue attaching bead units and
soldered jump rings until the necklace
is within 1 in. (2.5cm) of the finished
length, ending with an unwrapped loop.
4On a head pin, string a spacer,
a bicone, and a spacer. Make a
wrapped loop.
DESIGN OPTION
For an organic-looking necklace,
use hammered jump rings. Simply
place a soldered jump ring on a
bench block or anvil, and hammer
gently on both sides.

EDITOR'S TIPS
• Silk cord and waxed linen thread each have their advantages. My sodalite
necklace has silk cord, and my dyed-quartz necklace has linen thread. Silk
cord is easier to string, but linen thread is easier to knot. If your beads don't
have large holes, silk cord is your best option.
• If you use silk cord, buy a card with a needle on one end. Start your
necklace at the end of the cord and check the fit as you go. My sodalite
necklace is 19 in. (48cm).
• If you use waxed linen thread, first decide how long you want your
necklace to be. Then add 12 in. (30cm) and cut a piece of thread to that
length. My dyed-quartz necklace is 19 in. (48cm).

the blues
Use the many blue-crystal options to create a multihueci necklace
From azure to ultramarine, the color blue has a broad spectrum all its own.
Swarovski alone has more than a dozen different blues. Many people consider
blue their favorite color, but which blue? There are so many to choose from.
Create your own personal blue palette with this necklace-and-earring set.
1 necklace • Arrange three sets of crystals, each with 11
6mm round crystals, in the following color patterns:
ABCD, BCDA, CDAB.
2 a Cut a piece of beading wire (Basics, p. 112). Cut two
more pieces, each 1 in. (2.5cm) longer than the previous
piece. (My necklaces are 16 in./41cm).
b On the short wire, center a microcrimp bead, the center
bead in the first crystal set, and a microcrimp bead. Flatten
the microcrimp beads (Basics).
b Repeat steps 2b and 3a on the medium and long wires
with the remaining crystal sets.

THE BIRTH OF THE BLUES
A large portion of Swarovski's blue
crystal assortment has been in
production since the company's
early years. Swarovski's initial goal
was to produce crystals that imitated
the most popular gemstones used in
fine jewelry.
The first classic blue shades —
aquamarine, light sapphire, sapphire,
Montana, and blue zircon — have
been manufactured since before
1938. In 1954 Indian sapphire was
added and in 1959, Capri blue.
The newer blue shades like
indicolite, Pacific opal, Caribbean
blue opal, white opal sky blue, and
white opal star shine have all been
introduced within the last ten years
and have been launched based on
trend research and market demand.

Flexible beading wire is
composed of wires twisted
together and coated with
nylon. This wire is stronger
than thread and does not
stretch. The higher the strand
count (three to 49 strands),
the more flexible and kink-
resistant the wire. Use:
• .010 or .012 to string
lightweight beads or
beads with small holes,
such as pearls.
• .014 or .015 with most
gemstones, crystals, and
glass beads.
•.018, .019, and .024for
heavier beads and nuggets.
