SYRIAN ARISTOCRAT AND DIPLOMAT
RANIA SIDAWI
INVITES US INTO VILLA LEONOR, HER FAMILY’S MODERN
AND COLOURFUL ISLAND HOME SET AMONG THE PINES
‘In Formentera people’s emotions are in tune with nature,
it’s the perfect place to appreciate luxury’

hard to reach, but they act like a magnet for the yachts of
royals and superstars in search of the simple luxury for
which the place is famous. Their first port of call is the idyllic
northern beach of Ses Illetes, and there, the legendary
restaurant Juan y Andrea, run by brothers Juanjo and Jorge
Bonet García.
Founded by their parents, and named after them, Juan y

gastronomy and for Formentera itself. So it seems only

Villa Leonor was built by
Rania’s husband, Juanjo

project in 1999. Here, Rania

that Juanjo met and fell in love
with his own wife, Rania Sidawi,
and that they’ve created a
gorgeous family hideaway
nestled among its pine and
juniper forests.
Villa Leonor – named after
Juanjo and Rania’s daughter –
was built 25 years ago by the
restaurateur himself, to be
modern, spacious and full of
light. As for the vibrant decor,
that is Rania’s work, and reflects
her cosmopolitan outlook. A
Syrian aristocrat who moves
in diplomatic circles, she is
dedicated to promoting peace
between the Mediterranean
area and the Middle East. And
here, where kelims sit alongside
Italian textiles, and shades of
orange, yellow and fuchsia set
off the works of Ibiza-based
artist Mario Arlati, she brings
the two worlds together in
stylish harmony.
Rania, what’s your background?

My father, Roger Sidawi, was in
the vanguard of industr y,
modernising factories, and
during the Syrian war he
provided the International Red
Cross with three buildings
where they could carry out
their work. In recognition of
his support, there is a street
named after him. My mother,
Wafa Chalah, was a pioneer
and patron in the art world,
who opened a gallery in the
mid-1980s.”
Where did you grow up?
“I spent my first 15 years in
Damascus, then moved to
Beirut and on to Rome in 2000.
I completed my studies – in
English literature – at Oxford
University.”
Since then, you’ve moved a lot
in diplomatic circles…
“Yes. In 2019 I received the
Assotutela Italian Excellence
Award for my efforts.”
How did you meet Juanjo?

This is your family’s summer home, isn’t it?
“Yes. We’re based in Rome, in Piazza di Spagna.
We chose the city because of the international
schools and, when we’re there, my priorities are
my children’s education and my diplomatic work.
“Before the war, we used to spend every
Christmas in Syria with my family. It was lovely
having everyone together. Juanjo and I are all
about that unique love, the love of family.”
In fact Juanjo is carrying on his parents’ legacy…

buildings along much of the
coastline. Formentera’s isolation
makes it an island in the truest sense.”
Tell us about Villa Leonor…
“Juanjo bought the land and built it
himself, in 1999. The architecture

house speaks of the union between

What is your lifestyle like here?
“It’s simple, centred on the sea,

gastronomy. Over time it has
become the most magical luxury
venue in Europe.
“Juanjo and his brother Jorge
have followed in their parents’
footsteps with love and dedication.”
What makes the restaurant unique?
“In Formentera people’s emotions
are in tune with nature, so they live
happily in the present moment. It’s
the perfect place to appreciate
luxury.”

“Yes, Juanjo goes with the shark
fishing champions to Madagascar,
the Maldives and Guinea. He’s

trips abroad together.”
Do you travel much as a family?
“We saw in the new year, 2023, in
Marrakech, in a beautiful castle

of mine. Also this year we’ve
taken the children to New York
and spent weekends on Capri,
because it’s a place that

MOVING ON
This Morning host Holly, elegant in
a fitted strapless lavender gown by
Suzanne Neville, attended the
ceremony without her former copresenter Phillip Schofield for the
first time in 14 years, and spoke
about her hopes for the future of
the ITV show. “People want us to
do well. It all feels good again,”
she said of the recently revamped
morning programme.
Her co-host Alison Hammond
also put in a dazzling turn, in a
black sequinned dress with
matching cape. Although This
Morning missed out on the
Daytime Programme gong for
the first time in 13 years, Alison
enjoyed her night, later writing on
social media: “What a night of
happiness… we had the best
time. Thanks so much for all your
love support and votes and
allowing us to be there.”
Another star who appreciated
the support was Strictly Come Dancing
professional Amy Dowden, who is
undergoing treatment for breast
cancer. When the hit BBC1
programme won the Talent Show
prize, Amy – pretty in pink, with a
breast cancer awareness badge
pinned to her tulle gown – joined
her fellow Strictly stars on stage,
prompting former contestant Fleur
East to say in her speech: “It’s extra
special because we are joined by the
fabulous Amy Dowden on stage,
who looks absolutely incredible.”

POPPY HIGHAM
Caring Child
At just seven years old, Poppy (above with HELLO ! ’s brand
ambassador Rosie Nixon and McFly’s Danny Jones) is a devoted
carer to her sister Paige, 17, who needs to be looked after around
the clock and is often rushed to hospital.
Suffering from severe epilepsy and hyperinsulinism, Paige
needs help to breathe, eat and move, so Poppy’s young life
revolves around her sister’s needs.
Even though she misses out on things that most other children
her age take for granted, like birthday parties, Poppy never
complains. Instead, she steps up to help look after her big sister,
whose eyes light up whenever she walks into the room.
The sisters, from Runcorn in Cheshire, share an unbreakable
bond and Poppy loves to make Paige happy by singing and reading
to her. She has even overcome her shyness to support fundraising
efforts for the local hospice that supports Paige.
Poppy twirls for Harry in
her specially made pale
blue princess dress. He
described her outfit, which
she helped to design
herself, as “amazing”
people who have won an award and
who really deserve it.”
Ufuoma said Harry’s presence
made the event special, adding: “It
speaks of his heart, his kindness
and his love for children.”
REAL-LIFE PRINCESS
Poppy Higham, seven, from
Runcorn, stole the show as she got
up to dance for the Duke in a
“princess” dress she helped to
design herself.
The little girl won the Caring
Child award for helping to look
after her 17-year-old sister Paige,
who has complex health needs.
Awards host Gaby Roslin played
Ed Sheeran’s song Shivers on her
phone as Poppy showed him her
moves in her beautiful pale-blue
sparkly dress. “I can do Ed Sheeran,”
joked Harry, pointing to his red hair.
Admiring her dress, he asked:
“You designed this yourself? Wow,
amazing.” Of the Prince’s reaction,
dad Daniel said: “I don’t think he
was expecting the dance!”
Poppy, who sat next to the Duke
during the awards ceremony, said
that when she found out she
had won: “I danced around

health challenges. So to the parent
carers in the room, you have my
sincerest admiration and respect.”
The Duke’s poignant speech
came after he presented the award
for Inspirational Child (aged four
to six) to Violet Seymour, six.
Earlier he had chatted to the
little girl and her fellow winners
during a 50-minute reception,
listening to their stories, cracking
jokes and receiving gifts to take
back to his home in Montecito.
He told Ruky Anighoro and his
family that wife Meghan was “very
upset she couldn’t be here” ahead
of a “busy week” for the couple,
who will attend the Invictus Games
in Dusseldorf, Germany this week.
Ruky, 14, from Thamesmead in
south-east London, told Harry
about his love of Chelsea FC and
performed his single, Watch Me
Now,, which he wrote with his sister
Now
Faith and released on his
14th birthday. “Serious talent,” the
Duke said after nodding his head
along to the rap.
Ruky, who was joined by mum
Ufuoma, dad Odafe and Faith, said:
“I think it’s a good thing for Prince
Harry to come here to support
BLAKE McCAUGHEY
Inspirational Young Person 15-18
Blake has never lost his sense of humour, despite spending most
of the past four years in hospital. For Halloween, he dressed up as
paediatric surgeon Professor Paolo De Coppi, sporting scrubs and
a painted-on beard to celebrate his doctor’s birthday, much to the
amusement of staff and patients at Great Ormond Street Hospital,
while at Christmas, he decorated his hospital room like a grotto.
Born with a rare and complex genetic condition, Blake (above
with mum Christine, host Gaby and entertainers Dick and Dom),
from Tandragee in Co. Armagh, has weakened muscles and
suffers from chronic pain. He has spent much of his life in hospital,
undergoing hundreds of procedures, including open-heart surgery
and an operation to separate his stomach from his liver. He uses a
wheelchair and, unable to eat or drink, he is fed through a tube.
Paolo describes Blake, 15, as an incredibly resilient young man
whose smile and strength are a source of joy.

Meanwhile, Violet made Harry
laugh when he offered her a giant
panda balloon to take home,
telling him that she preferred cats.
“We’ll have to find you a different
balloon, then,” Harry said.
There was more laughter as
Harry joked with Blake McCaughey
that he should take home the giant
black and orange tiger balloon
next to his seat. “Never leave a
ginger behind,” he told the
teenager from Co. Armagh, who
won the Inspirational Young
Person 15-18 prize.
Blake gave the Duke a Belfast

name on the back and 84 to reflect
Harry’s year of birth, plus a bottle
of Giants Basalt Rock Gin.

MUTUAL ADMIRATION
Mum Christine said of Prince
Harry: “He was so down to earth.
He’s on your level and was very
good with Blake, asking him about
himself and wishing him well.”
Blake also told Harry that there
was a picture of his mother Diana
in his hospital. “He said: ‘That’s so
lovely,’” Christine added.
Harry warned Blake’s family
that it would be an emotional
night, and after he was told
that Blake himself was “the
HAYLEY CASSIN
Inspirational Young Person 12-14
“I’m not disabled; I’m differently abled,” says Hayley (above with
Seema Jaswal and broadcaster Ed Chamberlin), who is an
advocate for the power of sport and has appeared on the CBeebies
TV channel to champion the cause.
Despite having complex medical needs including diplegic
cerebral palsy and a displaced hip, she has won multiple medals
for wheelchair basketball. She plays for the Sheffield Steelers and
is on the England pathway for the Great Britain team, and also
plays wheelchair rugby for Team GB’s development side.
Hayley, 15, from Rotherham, South Yorkshire, requires daily
physiotherapy sessions, but she always remains positive and has
raised over £100,000 for charity by singing in a choir.
Mum Susan, who nominated her, said: “Hayley is an amazing
child who always promotes wellbeing. She has pushed through so
much adversity and she oozes positivity, fun and encouragement.”

Hurlingham Club
Budding musician Ruky (above with Radzi Chinyanganya and Tom
Felton) recently released his first single and is full of fun, despite
suffering from a painful brittle-bone disease.
Ruky, 14, is dependent on adults for his care and has had to
endure many operations for bone fractures, as well as recent
major surgery to correct his scoliosis, after which a difficult
recovery period left him wearing braces.
The teenager often has to take time off school in Thamesmead,
south-east London, but when he returns he stays behind at
homework club three days a week to catch up.
He dedicated his single, called Watch Me Now and released on
his 14th birthday, to everyone suffering from the same condition.
Mum Ufuoma, who nominated him for the award, says: “Ruky
has been through a lot. Winning a WellChild Award will be a big
morale-booster for him and encourage him to achieve even more.’’

VIOLET SEYMOUR
Inspirational Child 4-6
Violet, six (above with Harry), was born with a brain condition and
has spent much of the past five years in hospital. Living with
hydrocephalus, a damaged spinal cord, breathing problems and
neuropathic bladder, she frequently succumbs to infections, which
means missing school and time with her friends in Poole, Dorset.
Violet never complains and faces her challenges with courage,
kindness and humility. In fact, she’s more concerned about others
and, last year, secretly donated some of her own Christmas
presents to children staying in hospital during the festive season.
The youngster’s condition doesn’t stop her wanting to try new
things, such as gymnastics. And although her brain condition is
stable, her family know that this could change at any time, so she
is determined to live life to the full and not be ashamed of things
like her stoma bag. Her mum Holly Kieser describes Violet as the
bravest girl she knows.
GEORGE HALL
Inspirational Child 7-11

George’s complex medical needs mean he has been in and out of
hospital throughout his life, but he always remains brave, positive
and determined to live life to the full.
The 11-year-old (above with influencers Brooke and Jess, plus
singer HRVY), who has undergone hundreds of procedures, has a
tracheostomy, pacemaker and complete heart block, and is also
tube-fed and relies on life-support machines every night.
Despite this, George won last year’s Yorkshire Schools Cross
Country Accessible Race final, after which he was commended by
the organisers for his determination never to give up.
At home in Skipton, North Yorkshire, George enjoys cooking,
drama and football, and is known for his selflessness.
His grandmother Nicola says: “Winning this award will raise
George’s confidence and spirits. He’s been through so much. He’s
our hero and his fighting but always fun spirit deserves recognition.”

The Duke also chatted to 14-yearold Hayley from Rotherham, a keen
wheelchair basketball and rugby
player. “I’ve no doubt I’ll soon see
you [in the Paralympics],” he said.
Hayley said later: “I’ve watched
the Invictus Games and it’s great
that Harry cares so much about it.
It’s my dream to compete for Great

Dad Steve said: “She inspires me

B
old and unapologetic, groundbreaking and trailblazing
– Naomi Campbell has never followed a pattern. But
she has finally created her own, after co-designing a
collection for fashion e-tailer Pretty Little Thing.
If there’s one person who can make
high street look high end, it’s Naomi
and, as well as starring in the promotional
campaign (left and right), she was
delighted to model the designs when
they were unveiled on the catwalk (far
left) during New York Fashion Week.
“After 37 incredible years on the
catwalk, I’m thrilled for the opportunity
to share my latest adventure on the
other side – as a designer!” she told
fans on Instagram.
Calling it a “dream come true”,
Naomi explained that the main draw
for her was the opportunity to
champion emerging black designers
Victor Anate and Edvin Thompson,
with whom she worked on the range.
“For me, if I can get them on the
platform and get the light shone on
them, and give them a helping hand
in their career and what they want to
do with their own designs, helping
them on their journey, that makes me
happy,” she told W magazine.

perhaps, model twins Lady Eliza and Lady
Amelia Spencer, who love nothing better than
joining forces at a fashion event. The pair were
among the guests at a runway show held at Marc
Cain’s headquarters in Bodelshausen, Germany, to
celebrate the 50th anniversary of the fashion brand.
Wearing items from the label, the stylish siblings –
while they weren’t exactly twinning – kept it
complementary in shades of pink, Eliza in blush
chiffon while Amelia opted for bold fuchsia (together
right). “Incredible evening celebrating 50 years of
@MarcCain,” Amelia captioned shots that she posted
to social media.
Along with their elder sister Kitty, the 31-year-old
twins are incredibly close, with Eliza recently
describing her siblings as “the pieces to my puzzle”.
At the show, they posed for photos and chatted with
fellow fashion fans including German influencer
Leonie Hanne. Later, an outdoor afterparty featuring
a spectacular light show was attended by Karolina
Kurkova, Marc Cain founder Helmut Schlotterer and
the event’s guest of honour, National Treasuree star
Diane Kruger (together above). Czech model Karolina
both opened and closed the show, walking the glittercovered catwalk arm in arm with Helmut at the end.

JACK WHITEHALL
AND ROXY HORNER
COMIC STARTS HIS TRAVELS AS A FATHER
A
s any comedian knows, it’s all about the
delivery – and luckily for Jack Whitehall,
his partner Roxy Horner and their new baby
daughter, there were no problems to report.
The comedy star was walking on (gas and)
air after becoming a father for the first time,
calling it “utterly overwhelming and joyous
in ways I couldn’t have even imagined”.
Jack, whose relationship with his own
dad, Michael, formed the basis of their hit
Netflix series Travels with My Father,
ather updated
fans on social media by posting a photo of
the newborn in his arms (below left), plus
another taken with Roxy in their hospital
room (below right).
He wrote: “Having vowed I’d never be that
guy I am now 100% going to be the parent
that shows everyone endless pictures of their
kid. I also wore skechers to hospital, I think I
must accept I am a full blown dad now.”
Model Roxy also shared the group shot,
calling her daughter “the love of my life”.
Together for three years, the couple met
in Australia in 2020. They revealed that they
were expecting a baby in May, after a
previous pregnancy ended in miscarriage.
“It makes this feel extra-special,” Roxy
(left) told hello! in an exclusive interview
during her pregnancy. “ You’re more
grateful that everything’s fine.” As for Jack’s
reaction to the news of their impending
addition: “He was so excited.”

Not Rebecca Adlington’s

gold medal-winning
swimmer wanted to share
the news that she’s due to
dive back into parenting a
newborn, she took a more
subtle approach.
Uploading a batch of
photos from a family trip to
Disneyland Paris, Rebecca
included a shot in which her
daughter Summer, son Albie
and husband Andy all have
their hands on her stomach.
“Our own bit of magic,” her
Instagram post read. “Baby
number 3 on the way.”
The news came shortly
after Rebecca and Andy celebrated their
second wedding anniversary, an occasion
she marked by telling him: “2 years of
being your wife. Life with you simply gets
better and better.”
They married in Cheshire, in front of
guests including Rebecca’s former Team
GB swimming coach, and with Summer,
her daughter from her first marriage,
acting as flower girl and ring bearer. “The
sun shone, the people we loved were
there, it was just the best day,” Rebecca
told hello!.
Her latest pregnancy is all the more
special because last year Rebecca had a
miscarriage – something that made her
nervous about trying again. “I just don’
want to get my hopes up,” she said.

And the star’s collaboration with Sainsbury’s on a
menswear collection is sure to impress his Capital FM
presenter son Roman (below, with his parents and sister
Harleymoon), who often borrows his dad’s clothes.
“Roman is forever calling me up saying: ‘Dad, have

we’re about the same size now,” Martin, who turns 62 in
October, tells hello!

The DJ, musician and actor adds he often seeks
fashion advice from his style-savvy son, with whom he
stars in Celebrity Gogglebox.

“I’m always on the phone to him before events to ask
what he’s wearing so we can co-ordinate,” says Martin,
who hopes his autumn menswear edit, which includes 30
pieces in rich tones of tan, navy and charcoal, will be a
confidence booster.
“The minute you feel like you look good, you’re filled
with confidence that rubs off on other people. And
there’s a big bit of me that puts something on and says: ‘I
think Shirlie will like this,’” he says of his wife, who found
fame in the 1980s backing Wham! as part of the singing
duo Pepsi & Shirlie.
“My favourite pieces from the line are the canvas
jacket, which is perfect for an autumnal dog walk in the
woods,” says Martin. “And the jeans that are a revelation
to me; I’ve searched everywhere for the perfect pair and
these fit so well.”

something Idris called an “honour”.
Sharing a carousel of photos

Dressed in traditional robes,
the pair (together left) took to the

speech in which Sabrina told them:
“I am so honoured and humbled

She then handed the

LADY LOUISE
STRONG TRACES OF
GRANDAD’S TALENT
S
he has inherited her mother’s
blonde hair and her
grandmother’s poise, but Lady
Louise Windsor owes her driving
ambition to one person only: her
grandfather, the late Duke of
Edinburgh.
Currently studying English at
the University of St Andrews, the
teenager was spotted making the
most of the last days of her summer
break and enjoying the warm
weather, practising carriage driving
in Windsor Great Park.
Like Prince Philip, who reportedly
passed on not only his love of the
sport but also his carriage and
driving ponies to his beloved
granddaughter, Louise enjoys
competing as well as carriage driving
for fun. And she is already making a
name for herself on the circuit.
Earlier this year, watched by her
proud parents, the current Duke
and Duchess of Edinburgh, she took
part in events at the Royal Windsor
Horse Show.
“The Duke of Edinburgh has
been so involved in my driving,
which has been lovely, but slightly
scary because he invented the sport
pretty much,” she told the BBC in a
tribute to her grandfather in 2021.
“It’s incredible to have learnt firsthand from him and [it] definitely
made us closer, I think.”

A ROUND-UP OF NEWS REPORTS
DAME SHIRLEY BASSEY
Thrilled to be immortalised in new set of stamps
A set of stamps honouring
Dame Shirley Bassey’s 70-year
career in showbusiness has
been issued by Royal Mail.
Dame Shirley, 86, is the first
solo female music artist to
be recognised in a stamp
collection, with sets previously
having been dedicated to
fellow music legends David
Bowie, Sir Paul McCartney and Sir Elton John.
The eight stamps include images of the star
performing in London in the 1960s and singing at
the opening ceremony of the Rugby World Cup in
her native Cardiff in 1999, as well as performing her
James Bond theme Goldfinger at the Oscars in 2013.
“I am absolutely thrilled and would never have
dreamed that one day my face would be on a
stamp… that one day a letter might arrive and
there I am, with a postmark next to me,” she said.

JOE JONAS & SOPHIE TURNER
To divorce four years after tying the knot
US musician Joe Jonas has
filed for divorce from his wife,
Game of Thrones star Sophie
Turner. Joe, 34, who is best
known for performing
alongside siblings Nick and
Kevin in pop trio the Jonas
Brothers, moved to end his
marriage to English actress
Sophie, 27, last week, with the
documents stating that “the marriage between the
parties is irretrievably broken”.
The couple wed in two ceremonies in 2019, the
first a spur-of-the-moment affair in Las Vegas and
the second an intimate event in the South of
France attended by music producer Diplo and
actresses Maisie Williams and Priyanka Chopra,
who is married to Joe’s brother Nick.
The pair have two children together: three-yearold Willa and a one-year-old daughter.
LINDA EVANGELISTA
Everything rinky-dink at the palace
The UK’s largest outdoor ice
rink will open in the grounds
of Kensington Palace on 30
November after the Queen’s
grandson Peter Phillips spent
two years developing the
project. The rink has been
built on the Prince and
Princess of Wales’s former
helipad at the palace.
Peter, 45, was keen to use a royal residence for
the venture, which can host 750 skaters a day, but
wasn’t sure if the family would be keen. “We
approached the household in the manner that
you have to approach them, to be able to plant the
seed and see if we could make something happen.
And fortunately, we will be able to,” he said.
He also factored in King Charles’s passion for
the environment, including a variety of sustainable
food and beverage options.

she said. “Breast cancer was not going to kill me.”
However, four years after the operation, she was
diagnosed with a cancer of the pectoral muscle,

you’re done,” adding that her prognosis is “good
but not great”.

CELEBRATING 25 YEARS OF MARRIAGE
GLORIA HUNNIFORD
REVISITS HEVER CASTLE WITH
HUSBAND STEPHEN WAY TO MARK
THEIR SILVER ANNIVERSARY
ide by side in the glorious September
S
sunshine at Hever Castle, Gloria Hunniford
and her husband Stephen Way are filled with
delight, remembering the love that surrounded
them in this special place when they celebrated
their wedding here 25 years ago.
Their memories of that day are incredibly
vivid. “I can remember walking into the
church, filled with family and friends, and the
candles all lit – it was wonderful. We’ve often
said we would love to live it all over again,” the
much-loved broadcaster tells hello! as they
return to the historic castle in Kent.
On the secret of their happy marriage,
Gloria says it is based on “love, laughter and
good conversation”, adding: “Of course, there
is physical attraction, but our relationship is
full of kindness and humour. We enjoy talking
to each other. Talk, talk, talk – that is a
wonderful thing.”

V
DREAM DAY
The couple married at St Peter’s church in
Hever on 6 September 1998, followed by
celebrations at the castle, and today Gloria is
looking as fabulous as she did back then, when
she wore a spectacular hat by royal milliner
Philip Somerville and a beautiful embroidered
coat with a train over a dress by Sierra Designs.
“Yes, my God, how she looked on that day,”
recalls celebrity hairdresser and photographer
Stephen. “She looked so glamorous.”
Adds Gloria: “Everyone said to me: ‘You
shouldn’t have such a big hat because people
won’t be able to get under it to kiss you.’ But I
said: ‘They’ll have to learn how to.’ I’d always
dreamt of having a hat like that.”
The tulle train “took up most of the
church on my way up the aisle”, she says

with a smile, and she was accompanied by some
very special people: her sons Michael and Paul,
who gave her away, her adored daughter Caron,
her maid of honour, and the couple’s eight
grandchildren, who also had starring roles.
Stephen’s sons, Dominic and Matthew, were his
best men. The wedding, covered by hello!

attended by many famous faces, among them
Sir Cliff Richard, Esther Rantzen, Anthea
Turner and Barbara Windsor.

FAMOUS FRIENDS
“My close friend Cliff did a reading, and James
Galway, the world-famous musician, who comes
from Northern Ireland like myself, played the
flute, alongside his wife Jeanne,” Gloria says.
“The vicar, the Rev. Canon Roger Royle, said:
‘You know it’s a very classy wedding when the
cabaret is James Galway and Cliff Richard.’
“There are so many lovely moments and
things we still laugh about today. When we were
planning the wedding, Stephen said to me:
‘What sort of music shall we have for the
reception? A quartet, a cello?’ I said I would like
the BBC Big Band. He burst out laughing.”
However, over the next few days, Gloria
realised it was exactly what she would like. “So
that is what we had – it was wonderful. Our first

Choosing where to wed was an easy decision.
“There was only ever going to be one place for
us,” Gloria says. “I fell in love with the church
when I came here from Northern Ireland. It is so
small and intimate, and alongside it is the castle,
so unlike other castles, which can be barren and
big. Hever has something special. You can almost
pretend – and dream – that you could live there.”
It is where she celebrated her 50th birthday,
where Paul married in 2015 and where Caron,
who sadly passed away in 2004 from the breast
cancer she was first diagnosed with seven years
earlier, married Russ Lindsay in 1991.
“Caron rests there now – it is where her grave
is – so we have many reasons to go to Hever,”
says Gloria of the swirl of memories attached to
the place, close to her home in Sevenoaks.
V
MAKING MORE MEMORIES
And next year, there will be cause for more
wedding joy, as Caron’s eldest son Charlie, 29,
older brother to Gabriel, 26, prepares to marry
his fiancée Nicole Clements at Hever.
“We’re excited at the prospect,” says Gloria.
Both she and Stephen are “family-led and
our values in life are so similar”, which
47
‘He said: “No one has
ever held me so tightly,
I’d better marry you” —
as I was about to drown!’
explains the importance they attach to another
memory. Only the night before they married,
Paul welcomed his second son Beau, a little
brother for his first child, Jake.
“We agreed we couldn’t go up the aisle with
our gorgeous grandchildren without going to
see our new grandchild first. We went to the
hospital at half past six that morning,” she says.
MEETING OF MINDS
The couple, now in their early 80s, met at a
pre-theatre drinks reception at London’s
Lanesborough Hotel in 1993, the year after
Gloria’s first marriage, to TV producer and
director Don Keating, ended in divorce.
“I was going to skip the drinks, but my friend
persuaded me to go, and thank goodness I did,”
Gloria says. “As we approached the hotel, Stephen
stepped out of a black cab and went striding in. I
said to my friend: ‘I hope he’s going to the same
party as we are.’ I was attracted to him at first
sight.” They spent most of the reception chatting.
“We genuinely became the best of friends for
nearly a year. I wasn’t ready for a full-blown
relationship at that time,” she says.
If that first encounter left a lasting impression,
his proposal a year later on holiday in Barbados
was equally memorable. “I’d never learnt to
swim, so Stephen said: ‘Come into the pool and
I’ll teach you.’ I did seven strokes, the most I
have ever done, and then I sank right down.”
Stephen takes up the story. “At that point, she
grabbed me around the neck. I’ve never been
hugged so tight, and I knew at that moment: ‘I
have to marry you.’ Although I think she was
hanging on for dear life,” he says.
Gloria chuckles: “He told me afterwards that
he thought: ‘No one has ever held me that

when he proposed – as I was about to drown!”
He has been her strength and support ever
since, by her side during happy times, as well as
the dark days after the loss of Caron. Next year
will mark the 20th anniversary of her passing.
“I do feel that losing a child is the worst thing
that can happen to you,” Gloria says. Caron
spent the last three years of her life in Australia,
with frequent visits from family. “When Caron
had to have extended treatment, Stephen left
his business in Bond Street with his staff, and we
stayed on in Australia. It was a wonderful gesture
of support, and he loved her like the daughter
he never had,” says Gloria, who set up the Caron
Keating Foundation in her memory. In 2017,
she was awarded an OBE by Queen Elizabeth II
for her contribution to cancer charities.
MOVING WITH THE TIMES
Despite the heartbreak of losing her daughter,
Gloria considers she has been blessed in life. She
continues to co-host BBC consumer series Rip-Off
Britain with Julia Somerville and Angela Rippon
and is a regular panellist on ITV’s Loose Women.

“When I started out, there were only four
TV stations, and everything was live. My
grandchildren cannot understand that I lived
through that era. Now they all stream what they
want to watch, there is so much to choose from.”

Gloria’s footsteps on Strictly Come Dancing
Dancing.. “She
will do well. She is very strong, she moves fast
and she has great stance,” says Gloria, who took
part in Strictly in 2005. “I said to her: ‘How will
you manage recording with rehearsals?’ and she
said: ‘I’ll just have to rehearse in the evenings
instead of having dinners and watching TV.’”
It’s a work ethic shared by Gloria. “I feel very
lucky to be still doing what I love, the same work
I have been doing since I started in broadcasting

The royals have worshipped at

The Aberdeenshire estate was
said to be Elizabeth’s favourite
home and she was near the end of
her summer holiday last September
when she died just two days after
welcoming the new Prime Minister
Liz Truss to the castle.
Just as Elizabeth used to spend
her own Accession Day at
Sandringham, where her father
George VI died, the King no doubt
found comfort in marking the first
year of his own reign at a place
so dear to his mother’s heart. H

that the Prince and Princess of Wales
chose a visit to St Davids Cathedral in
Pembrokeshire to remember her last week.
On the first anniversary of her passing, Prince
William and Kate laid white flowers in front of a

landmark and appeared visibly moved as they
reflected on her life.
The royal couple had attended a moving
Accession Day service that remembered
Elizabeth “with both sadness and great
affection”, before stepping forward for the
Princess to lay a bouquet of ivy, eucalyptus,
white roses and waxflowers.
PRIVATE MOMENT
Bowing their heads in silence, they seemed
lost in thought before moving on to look
through a book of condolences signed by more
than 3,000 people.
Later, during a reception with invited guests
in the cathedral’s cloisters, Kate spoke about the
late monarch with flying instructor Patricia

memories of her – we have to hold on to them.”

The royal couple – back on royal duties after

after a delay caused by fog. The crowd broke
into spontaneous applause, while one person
shouted: “You’re doing a great job.”

REMEMBRANCE AND RESPECT
The Prince and Princess – Kate wearing a
maroon Eponine coat, a matching hat by Sahar
Millinery and pearl earrings that belonged to
Elizabeth II – were greeted by members of the
clergy before taking their seats. The private
service was held in Welsh and English in front of
a congregation of around 20 people.
The dean, the Very Rev. Dr Sarah Rowland
Jones, told them: “It is particularly poignant to
welcome you here, Your Royal Highnesses, on
Accession Day, the first anniversary of the death
of Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. She

In another touching moment, the choir sang
Thou Knowest, Lord, the Secrets of Our Hearts,
Hearts,
which was also sung at the Queen’s state funeral
on 19 September last year.
Speaking afterwards, the Dean said of the
Prince and Princess: “I was struck that they spent
quite a time as they laid the flowers. In many
ways, our job today was to give them the space
for their remembering. Some of us had met the
late Queen but none of us were part of that
immediate family.”
Recalling Elizabeth II’s visits and those by the
King while he was Prince of Wales, she
added: “Now it is Their Royal Highnesses’

During the reception in the
cloisters, Prince William met Chris
Taylor, 84, who was present for each
of Elizabeth II’s visits.
She first came in 1955, during a
tour of Wales, making her the first
monarch to visit the cathedral since
the Reformation, when one of the
quire stalls became the Sovereign’s
Stall. She also became the first
monarch to sit in the stall, which
bears the royal coat of arms.
She returned in 1982 for the
Maundy Service and again in 1995,
when St Davids was granted city
status. Her final visit was in 2001.
Chris, a bookseller, described

“fantastic”, adding: “It is the first
time I have met the Prince and
Princess of Wales in person. They
are so nice and a brilliant couple
who will serve this country. William
will be a brilliant King one day.”
Emerging into the late summer
sunshine, the royal couple chatted
to well-wishers waiting outside. Liz
Thomas, 80, said she spoke Welsh
to Kate and was delighted when
the Princess replied in the
language. “I said ‘croeso

and she said ‘da

WEDDING BELLS
Eluned Murrow, 55, waited to speak
to William and Kate on the eve of a
big day for her. She said: “It is lovely
to have them here because it is the
anniversary of the Queen’s death
but it’s also my wedding tomorrow,”
she said.
“I took some time out to see
them and it was worth it. Kate said:
‘Good luck for tomorrow.’
“When I told her it was my
wedding, she touched my arm
and said: ‘Oh, that’s lovely,
congratulations.’ She was really
natural and lovely. She said: ‘Have a
lovely day – I hope the weather
holds for you.’”
Kate even helped one woman to

grass bank while waiting to meet
her. Sue Wade, 79, a retired
architect who witnessed Kate’s act
of kindness, said: “What a lovely
thing to do.
“She saw the lady slip on the
bank and she just reached her
hand through the barriers and
helped get her to her feet.”
Sue also enjoyed a joke from
Prince William, saying: “I said
to him that I had heard he was
tall but I didn’t realise how tall,
and he said he didn’t even have
his high heels on.”

dad, deputy coxswain Judd Kohler, and brother Albie, two, watch on
the patron saint of Wales founded a
monastery there in the sixth century.
The Pembrokeshire beauty spot
is a popular tourist destination, and
the Prince and Princess enjoyed a
different view of it – from a barge –
as they visited the Câr-y-Môr
seaweed farm nearby.
After changing into casual
clothing, the couple took to the
water to tour the three-acre farm,
where they were shown seaweed,
mussels, native oysters and scallops
being grown.
Câr-y-Môr, which translates as
“for the love of the sea”, is backed
by Notpla, a London-based start-up
that produces compostable food
packaging made from seaweed and
plants and which won an Earthshot
Prize last year.
Prince William and Kate then
transferred from the barge onto
the St Davids Lifeboat, returning to
shore to tour the Royal National
Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) station
and meet the crew.
Elizabeth II was patron of the
RNLI throughout her reign.
As they departed, the Princess
received a posy of flowers from Isla
Evans-Kohler, four, daughter of
deputy coxswain Judd Kohler and
crew member Ellen Evans.
Isla’s little brother Albie, two, was
wearing a Wales rugby shirt as he
gave the Prince a jar of St Davids
wild honey.
SWEET TREAT
William told Albie he “loved” his
shirt and asked him: “Do you like
honey? It is very yummy. Do you
like rugby too? First [Rugby World
Cup] game on Sunday.”
Kate asked the little boy: “Have
you been on the boat? It goes very
fast, and your daddy has got a

boat’s siren and the Princess said: “I
didn’t hear the siren, but it was

Elizabeth II’s death
surrounded by horses.
Sophie, 58, watched the
equestrian action at the
Cornbury House Horse Trials
in the Cotswolds, where her
niece Zara Tindall had
competed over the previous
two days.
Dressed for the warm
autumn day in a white cotton
dress and espadrilles, with a
pair of sunglasses perched on
her head, she looked cool and
relaxed as she walked around
the parklands with her friends
David and Fiona Howden,
who live in nearby Cornbury
House and host the five-day
event each year.
As families enjoyed fun
activities including willow
weaving and making clay
animals, the Duchess met one
of the horses.
Sophie’s appearance on
Friday 8 September came a
day after Zara took part in the
showjumping and crosscountry events on her horse
Showtime, having competed
in the dressage the day before
and at the Burghley Horse
Trials a week earlier.
SPECIAL RELATIONSHIP
The Duchess shared a close
bond with her mother-in-law,
who was said to consider her
to be like a second daughter.
And while Sophie may not
have had the same passion for
horses as Elizabeth, who had
been riding since she was
three and owned an
impressive stable of
thoroughbreds, the two
women shared an interest in
military history and loved
spending time together, with
Sophie often dropping into
Windsor Castle for tea from

She added moving words to the

who recently gave birth to her and
husband Jack’s second son Ernest, wrote.
“Missing you so much but remembering

Mike Tindall, married to another of
the Queen’s granddaughters, Zara,

penned the words: “I can’t help but start

Meanwhile Her Majesty’s former
daughter-in-law Sarah, Duchess of York,
paid tribute by posting a series of images
on Instagram, including one of her with
the late Queen’s adored corgis, Sandy
and Muick. Sarah and her former
husband the Duke of York have taken
care of the pets since her death.
“You were a wonderful friend, a

share so much of your courage and
heart,” she wrote. “You will always be
loved and missed by our family and our
nation. As we mourn a year on, we also
celebrate the wonderful times we shared
with her late Majesty the Queen. She
entrusted me with the care of her corgis
Sandy and Muick and I am delighted to
say they are thriving.”
WISE WORDS REMEMBERED
She also put up a quote from the Queen
that read: “Whatever life throws at us,
our individual responses will be all the
stronger for working together and
sharing the load.”
Sarah commented: “I often
remember the wise words Her late
Majesty the Queen shared with me and
the wider world. At a time of great
troubles in the world one year after her
passing, today this quote of hers seems
more apt than ever.”
One of the Queen’s closest confidantes,

GUN SALUTES RING OUT ON
ACCESSION DAY
CEREMONIAL MARKS ONE YEAR
SINCE CHARLES BECAME KING
70
became King. A new chapter for the monarchy
began immediately and that historic occasion
was remembered across the country last week,
with commemorations to mark His Majesty’s
first Accession Day anniversary.
Union flags were flown on Government and
public buildings all day, while Accession Day
gun salutes were carried out. The King’s Troop
Royal Horse Artillery fired a 41-gun royal salute
in Hyde Park at midday, supported by the Band
of the Grenadier Guards, and one hour later,
the Honourable Artillery Company fired a 62gun royal salute from the Tower of London.
Many of the soldiers and horses who
participated were also part of the state funeral
procession last year.
Captain Amy Cooper, the lead rider in the
procession that carried Elizabeth’s coffin to lie
in state in Westminster Hall, gave the order to
fire the salute in London’s Hyde Park, while
there was a simultaneous 21-gun salute at
Edinburgh Castle. The Honourable Artillery
Company – responsible with the King’s Troop
for gun salutes following the Queen’s death –
fired the salute from the Tower of London.
At 1pm sharp, bells were rung at
Westminster Abbey – the historic royal church
where the Queen’s funeral took place – to
honour the King’s accession. The bells were
ringing 501 changes of Stedman Caters in a
variation composed especially for the
occasion, followed by a plain course of
London Surprise Royal.
NATIONAL COMMEMORATION
In Northern Ireland, Accession Day was
marked by a 21-gun salute fired by army
reservists from 206 (Ulster) Battery, 105
Regiment Royal Artillery at Hillsborough
Castle. The battery also fired the salute to
mark the Queen’s death last year as well as the
proclamation salute to mark the new reign of
King Charles the following day.
Colonel Matt Wills, assistant commander of
the 38 Irish Brigade and the Northern Ireland
garrison, said: “We’re happy and excited
because it’s an anniversary of the accession of
our new King, but an accession usually follows
a death, and so it was only 12 months ago that
we lost the late Queen, which probably is

still affecting all of us.”

A majority – 53% – also said the royal

Next week the King and Queen will fly the

The royal couple will attend a ceremony of

themes of importance to the citizens of both

In Bordeaux, which is home to a large number

British and French businesses.
They will also meet UK and French military

The royal couple will end their whirlwind trip
with a visit to an organic vineyard that has pioneered
a sustainable approach to winemaking, including
generating its own solar energy and capturing and
converting the carbon dioxide it produces.
IMPORTANT RELATIONSHIP
This will be the King’s 35th official visit to France
and the Queen’s ninth, and it comes four years
after they last visited France to commemorate the
75th anniversary of the D-Day landings.
Queen Elizabeth II made her last state visit to
France in 2014. State visits, made at the request of
the Government, are seen as crucial for building
diplomatic ties and boosting trade and other
partnerships.
A senior Foreign and Commonwealth Office
official involved in planning the visit described the
Franco-British relationship as “absolutely massive”,
adding that the UK was “still realising very real
benefits” from the King and Queen’s successful
visit to Germany in April.
Plans for the visit were unveiled as it emerged
that the King has carried out more official
engagements in his first year as monarch than his
mother did in her first year as Queen.
His Majesty carried out engagements on 161
days since his accession on 8 September last year,
compared to 157 days of engagements carried
H
out by Elizabeth II in her first year.

NEW ROUTINES
For Channel 4 News anchor Krishnan, sequins
and glamour are a world away from his day
job. “I was [at the studio] learning the
routine and then went and grilled a Cabinet
minister,” he says. And he isn’t the only one
juggling Strictly with work; Nikita will be
going straight to daily dance training from
hosting the breakfast show on the BBC
Asian Network. “I’ll be practising my steps
behind the mic,” she says with a laugh.
All 15 celebrities are about to have
their lives turned upside down, with the
country’s most popular dance show
bringing with it a whole new level of
attention and scrutiny. But Sherlock actress
Amanda isn’t fazed. “I think you can choose to

says, adding: “Me and my ex-partner [actor
Martin Freeman] never had our children on
show until they were at an age where they
wanted to. Strictly is such a huge show, and I
understand that it does catapult you [into the
spotlight], but I think you can hide away or give
yourself to it. It’s down to you.”
LEARN FROM THE BEST
The show’s cast of professional dancers, whose
celebrity partners will be revealed on Saturday’s
launch show, are becoming just as much the
stars of the show. Learning from them is part of
why Annabel Croft signed up to Strictly
Strictly..
“I’m absolutely mesmerised by them,” the
tennis ace says. “What a special opportunity to
be able to dance with these amazing dancers –
it’s like being told you’re partnering up with
Roger Federer.”
All the celebrities are eager to impress the
show’s four judges: Shirley Ballas, Motsi Mabuse,
Craig Revel Horwood and Anton Du Beke. Zara
is most keen to “wow” Craig – “he’s a tough nut
to crack”, she says – while Adam jokes: “I’m just
trying to impress my wife.”
As a Paralympic champion cyclist and
swimmer, surely Jody is in it to win it? “There’s
always an element of competitiveness, but I just
don’t want to go out in the first week,” he admits.
“Then it’s another dance and away we go. If you
get to Blackpool, you’re fairly good, and

GARDENING GURU
ALAN TITCHMARSH
ROYAL CONFIDANT TELLS US
ABOUT HIS LATEST BOOK
Alan’s latest book, Chatsworth: The Gardens and the People Who
Made Them, explores the history of the estate and features stunning
commissioned photography of its extensive gardens, alongside
images and memorabilia from the estate’s archives
is soothingly familiar Yorkshire accent has
H
filled our living rooms for decades and his
unrivalled passion for horticulture has become

part of the fabric of our nation. So it’s little wonder
that national treasure Alan Titchmarsh can’t go
shopping without being recognised and accosted
for advice. His latest encounter came in a DIY
store’s lighting section over the weekend.
“I was shopping when a lady saw me and said:
‘Ooh, now, I’ve got this Paulownia…’” Alan, 74,
tells hello! in this exclusive interview.
“It was only then that she realised she hadn’t
said hello and introduced herself,” adds the
broadcaster, gardener and author. “She said: ‘I’m
terribly sorry… I follow you on Instagram,’ and we
had a quick consultation in B&Q.”
These encounters with fans don’t bother Alan
though – far from it. “Oh, it’s an occupational
hazard, I don’t mind,” he says, smiling. “You can’t
go on telly and spend 40 years trying to engage
people, then be surprised when you have. Besides,
I’m the same off the TV as I am on it.”
HOW’S CHARLIE?
One of his most commonly asked questions is:
“Are you still in touch with Charlie Dimmock?” To
which the answer is: “Yes, occasionally,” he tells us
of his former co-presenter on Ground Force,
Force, the
much-loved BBC garden makeover show that ran
between 1997 and 2005.
Another old friend Alan does his best to stay in
touch with – despite their rather busy schedules –
is the King.
The pair share a “mutual fondness and respect”
for each other, Alan has told us, and he had
dinner with the then Prince of Wales the night
before the Queen died last September.
“I think his first year on the throne has been
exemplary,” says Alan. “He’s handled it amazingly
well – it must be very difficult, losing your mother.
The fact that she’d been among us for so long
made some people think: ‘Oh, it will be a terrible
gear change when she goes,’ but I feel it was
handled really well and quite seamlessly.”
The King is not Alan’s only connection to high
society. He shares a decades-spanning friendship
with the 12th Duke and Duchess of Devonshire,
Peregrine “Stoker” Cavendish and his wife
Amanda, whose majestic Chatsworth House, estate
and 105-acre gardens in Derbyshire are the subject
of Alan’s latest book, Chatsworth

Prince’s Countryside Fund

“The Duke asked me to write it – I was surprised
and delighted,” says Alan, who along with Alison,
his wife of 48 years, are firm friends with the Duke
and Duchess, who this year passed the main house
on to their son and daughter-in-law, the Earl and
Countess of Burlington.
“They’re such good friends that it’s not a
case of: ‘Oh, gosh, we better be on our best
behaviour.’ Although we are, wherever we go,” he
says with a smile of their visits.
“It was a delight to submerge myself in the
history of Chatsworth and learn the stories of the
people who made the gardens,” continues the
author, whose research process was largely carried
out via his own extensive collection of books.
The book features stunning never-before-seen
images of the Peak District house and gardens –
which is open to the public – as well as shining a
light on the people who made Chatsworth the
flourishing estate it is today, from Bess of
Hardwick and her second husband Sir William
Cavendish, who bought the Manor of Chatsworth
for £600 in 1549 and built the first house there, to
the late Duchess of Devonshire Deborah
Cavendish, whom Alan interviewed for a
magazine in the early 1980s on his first visit there.
COLOURFUL HISTORY
“I wanted to bring these people to life; so often,
they’re just a name,” he says. “Suddenly it all
becomes more interesting and more colourful
when you do.”
Alan wrote Chatsworth from his home in
Hampshire. “I write in a barn-turned-office across
from my house. I tend to start at 8.30am and carry
on until 1pm, then I’ll go and garden or do
something else,” says Alan, whose popular Sunday
morning magazine show Love Your Weekend with
Alan Titchmarsh
itchmarsh returns to ITV at the beginning
of October. His next literary project will be
writing his 12th novel. It’s still in its “embryonic
stage; in other words, I have
no idea what it is at the
moment”, chuckles the star.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW
SHARING HER LESSONS ON HEALTHY LIVING
JULIA BRADBURY
ON HOW HAVING CANCER HAS BROUGHT
NEW MEANING TO BEING A MUM
Perhaps best known
for co-hosting BBC1’s
Countryfile with Matt
Baker, nature
enthusiast Julia has
also presented the
BBC’s Planet Earth
Live and Britain’s Best
Walks for ITV
J

ulia Bradbury isn’t always the
most popular member of her
household. Her three children get
“a bit fed up” with her impassioned
conversations about healthy eating
and resent the fact that they can’t
eat as many doughnuts as they
once did. They’re not allowed
sugar at home and have nuts,
seeds and fruit instead of cereal
for breakfast.
Pizzas are considered a treat,
too. “I’d say at times there’s a bit of
friction,” says the TV presenter
about family mealtimes. But since
her diagnosis of breast cancer
in 2021, and her recovery from
a mastectomy and breast
reconstruction, Julia, 53, has done
a “deep dive” into what it means to
be healthy, in order to “prevent reoccurrence” and “optimise my
chances of staying alive”.
Her main motivation is her
children – son Zephyr, 12, and
twin girls Xanthe and Zena, eight
– with her partner, property
developer Gerard Cunningham.
“I’ve always adored being a mother.
It’s the greatest privilege and I love
watching them grow,” says Julia as
she sits surrounded by the greenery
of her London garden.
“It was the saddest moment when
I had my first biopsy and I didn’t
know what was going on. I kept
thinking: ‘I just want to see my
children grow up, I have to see
my children grow up.’
renewed focus on what’s important
in my life”, as well as the impetus to
write a book, Walk Yourself Happy,
Happy,
about how the natural world can
enhance physical and mental health
for all of us.
The former Countryfile
yfile presenter
is known for her passion for walking
and her book outlines the benefits of
embracing it as the “gateway drug”
to nature, as she describes it.
Other wellness areas are covered,
such as nutrition and sleep,
meditation and breath work, healing
and practising gratitude. Expert
opinions and scientific studies are
interspersed with Julia’s own story,
which tells how she has overhauled
her lifestyle and radically changed
her habits with a daily routine that
begins from the moment she wakes
up. Rather than look at her phone,
“the first thing I do is smile”, she
says. “I put a smile on my face
because it makes a chemical reaction
with the brain.”
FINDING STILLNESS
She then sits by her bathroom
window to soak up the morning light
to help set her “circadian clock”
before doing 20 minutes of breath
work. “That is my stillness time, my
time to set my intention for the day,
to be grateful for what I have, to take
in a little bit of nature and be on my
own. I feel much more peaceful,
more able to deal with the stuff that’s
thrown at me.”
She has vegetables for breakfast,
never snacks and doesn’t eat after
6pm. Late nights watching Netflix
while eating Maltesers and popcorn
are but a distant memory now that
she has a sleep hygiene routine,
which sees her in bed by 10pm at
the latest. A night owl in the past,
Julia changed her bedtime after
being told by a sleep expert that the
body repairs itself best between the
hours of 10pm and 3am. She’s also
pretty much teetotal.
“I just don’t want to drink. For me,
the enjoyment is completely taken
away by the alarm bell going: ‘25%
risk of re-occurrence’, so where’s the
joy in that?” she asks, adding that she
was very happy sipping jasmine tea in
a bar the other night. “Although I
haven’t been clubbing yet. I’d be
interested to see what that’s like.”
Should she ever “fall off the
wagon”, she knows exactly what
V
EVER MORE GRATEFUL
“Has my relationship with them
changed because of the cancer?
Probably. I’m much more emotional.
I feel more. The fabric of life is right
at my fingertips.
“And the impermanence of
everything around us. Everything is
heightened. It’s made every moment
with them even more precious, and
I’m ever more grateful.”
Two years on from her surgery –
and in “good health” – she says the
cancer diagnosis has given her “a

Since her breast

room for that?’ It brings everything
into a sharper focus.”
So has she jettisoned some
relationships? “Yes, I have,” she
says. “Not necessarily purposefully
in some instances; sometimes
things have drifted, and you kind of
go: ‘Okay, I’m just going to leave
that there.’ I genuinely don’t have
time to nurture 20 friendships, but
I don’t think anybody has.”
COMMUNING WITH NATURE
She has also made peace with the
fact that she sometimes has to say
no to things – particularly work
offers – if she doesn’t feel she has
the energy to take them on.
“I have to preserve and look after
myself – I’ve got to get over the
physical trauma, the emotional
trauma, and recalibrate my body.
All that takes time.”
When she recently made a travel

the cause would be. “Dunking a
chocolate biscuit in a cup of tea,”
she says, wistfully. “I haven’t done
that in years.”
With these new habits, her social
life and inevitably some friendships
have changed.
“When I had my cancer
diagnosis, I wasn’t told: ‘You’re
going to die.’ There was treatment
for which I’m very, very grateful.
But there’s still a massive reevaluation in terms of relationships
– with friends, family, partners –
and I have become very sensitive
to the energy that I’m putting into
certain relationships, and the
energy that I’m getting back from
certain relationships,” she says.
“There has been a little bit of a
reckoning where I’m thinking:
‘I don’t think either of us are
benefiting very much from this,’
or: ‘Have I got the emotional

have tools we can use to maintain our health’
programme about Ireland for
Channel 4, for example, the
filming schedule was split into two
so that she wouldn’t have to be on
the road for eight weeks.
Julia is hoping her book is filled
with practical but achievable tips
and advice for those seeking a
healthier lifestyle. “I want people
to realise that health is a gift, and
we have tools that we can use
that are within our own orbit to
maintain our health.”
And, she insists, you don’t need
a garden to commune with nature.

The appeal of an exquisitely cut leather jacket is
impossible to deny, and this season takes the trend to

Quiet luxury
From Tory Burch’s oversized knitwear and minimalist
accessories to the tank tops and trophy jewellery at

From botanical prints to petal-like embellishments,
florals were out in force at the AW23 shows. Though

Ferrari
THE NEW RED LIP
Vampy shades of crimson, claret and even black
lips dominated the catwalks. A deep red lip is a
great way to add a touch of glamorous grunge
to your autumnal beauty looks. MAC’s lead artist
Terry Barber describes the raisin-coloured lip as
the “peach of the season”. He recommends using
a coffee-coloured eyeliner to line the lips and
blending it with a deep red to get
the depth of colour. “It’s all about
taking the idea of a classic red lip
and dialling it right down to that
almost raisin-like colour.” And
don’t be afraid to mix shades
to get your perfect tone. When
Ferrari launched its fashion line,
a vinyl finish, using a high shine
gloss, gave some extra revs to the
look of the models’ lips.

When it comes to eyeliner this
autumn/winter, the more abstract
the better, and it can make a real
statement. If you’re looking for
inspiration, take note of the
geometric patterns at shows like
ArdAzAei’s. Try using a gel pigment
with a fine-tip brush or a felt-tip
liquid liner to make sure your
placement is on point. To nail the
angular look, a piece of tape is your
best friend. Cut a small strip and rub
it once or twice on a fabric surface to
remove some of the stick, then apply
to skin to help you achieve sharp
clean lines.

PASTEL POP
A bare-faced look with a touch of pastel
pigment on the eyes was on the agenda at
shows this year. At Richard Quinn, washes of
sky blue were paired with a sheer shimmer
topper for an icy touch, while at Yuzefi
blossom pink pigment stole the show as lashes
were kept bare to make even more of a
statement. To re-create the look, start with a
radiant base and dial down on the blush and
bronzer to really make the pink pop. Opt for
a touch of colour, like MAC’s Soft Matte
Eyeshadow in Felt Cute, buffed lightly into
lids for a monochromatic moment, or
experiment with different shades of pink
using blushes from your make-up bag.

O
n a mission to break
the stigma around
periods, Strictly Come
Dancing contestant
Zara McDermott and Made in
Chelsea alumnus turned podcast
host Sam Thompson (together
right) want to get us talking. The
couple have partnered with
menstrual hygiene brand Always
and its Always Better Together
campaign to release content on its
online hub about what to expect
from menstruation.
A recent survey by the brand
showed that half of parents are
nervous broaching the subject
with their children. Here, Zara
and Sam speak exclusively to
hello! about period chats, their
own experiences and why talking
shouldn’t be “a serious sit down”.
INTERVIEW: KATE LOCKETT. PHOTO: ZARA McDERMOTT
Why are periods such a taboo
subject, Zara and Sam?
Zara: “My mum told me that it was
something that the teachers didn’t
really want to speak about. They
gave out leaflets once in class and
that was it. [Even] now, our
parents and teachers don’t feel
comfortable having those
conversations, because it wasn’t
what they grew up having, which is
completely understandable.
We’ve partnered with Always to
make educational content to be
shown in schools to aid these
conversations. It’s something that
I’m really passionate about and
now Sam is too.”
Sam, was this a subject that was
spoken about when you were
growing up?
“I admit I was woefully
uninformed about periods. I’ve
got a sister and I didn’t have a
conversation with her about it.
I was surprised I got asked to be
involved in this but when we
created the content, I completely
understood why I’m here and it’s
an honour. Always did research
that showed 48% of parents
believed that boys were not
adequately informed about
periods and 40% of teachers
agreed. With those stats, it’s
important to have a boy there
as well. If we can get this easy-toabsorb content about first periods
and what they’re like to a younger
age group of boys, it will spark up
conversations with their siblings,
girlfriends and friends.”
or chocolate that I want.”
S: “I’m incredibly hard work, so
if I can do anything to help Zara
then I’m on it!”
Sam, how can boys and men be
allies?
“Showing an interest goes an
incredibly long way. No one is
expecting boys to know absolutely
everything. Empathy is enormous,
too, putting yourself in someone
else’s shoes and asking questions.
I hope this campaign will help
boys see it as normal.”
Time to
Couple Zara McDermott and Sam Thompson
explain why they’re encouraging young people
and parents to open up about menstruation
What are your tips to start
conversations around periods?
Z: “This conversation doesn’t need
to be a serious sit down.
Normalising those conversations
from early on is really important,
saying: ‘Yeah, I’m on my period,’
and talking about products. If you
leave it too late, it becomes this
huge, overwhelmingly scary thing
that it doesn’t need to be.
“When I was younger, we didn’t
have those normal conversations,
even around my dad or my
brother. If we’d had those
conversations, it wouldn’t have
felt like such a big deal.”
Zara, what advice would you give
your younger self to prepare for
your period?
“Don’t feel like you can’t ask
questions. When I was younger,
I felt nervous to talk to my mum
about it, because I almost didn’t
want to grow up. I felt like I was
losing my innocence in a way. I had
this perception that I was going to
completely change, my whole life
was going to change. That’s not the
case: it’s a natural, bodily change.
It doesn’t change you as a person.”
How do you manage your periods
now, and do they affect your
day-to-day life?
Z: “Not particularly. The only
thing is I’m very over-emotional
the day before my period starts.
I go from being happy and chirpy
to suddenly crying at the slightest
inconvenience. Now I know how
I’m going to feel and Sam knows
how to deal with it. Give me a
big hug, tell me it’s all going to
be okay and get me any snacks
What steps do you take to
safeguard your mental health?
S: “We’ve recently realised what it
means to truly relax. You can burn
out if you don’t take that time,
chilling out doing nothing or
watching a movie with each other.”
Z: “In this industry, it can be really
hard to switch off. You feel like
you should be doing something
all the time. Prioritise yourself,
have that space and detox from
the world. I’m famously terrible at
relaxing, I need to get better at it.”
How do you ensure that you get a
good night’s sleep?
Z: “I’ve been more stressed lately
because I’ve been filming two
projects in Ibiza and the US.
I’ve realised that I need to
decompress before bed, so I type
in ‘mindfulness meditation’ on
YouTube, and listen to something
and escape my brain.”
S: “But when I listen to my
football podcast that helps me get
to sleep, I get told to turn it down
[laughs]. It’s really good to
concentrate on one thing,
especially for an ADHD brain.”
What is the key to a happy and
healthy lifestyle?
S: “Go out and speak to friends.
It’s so nice to see people in the
flesh, go for a Sunday roast or play
a game of football in the park.”
Z: “Mine’s the opposite. Being
comfortable doing things on your
own. Take yourself out for lunch,
to the gym or shopping. I feel so
empowered and me-focused when
I do things like that.”

AIR WAYS
TikTok star and
professional chef
Poppy O’Toole
serves up some of
the foolproof and
delicious recipes
for getting the most
out of your air
fryer featured in
her The Actually
Delicious Air Fryer
Cookbook
Serves 4 Takes 18-20 minutes, plus marinating
“Beautifully flaky salmon
seasoned perfectly with a sweet,
sticky, salty glaze. Salmon is
easily one of my favourite fish
and it’s so simple to cook with
great results in the air fryer.”
• 2 cloves garlic, crushed
• 4cm/1½in piece fresh ginger,
finely chopped or grated
(no need to peel)
• 1 tsp chilli flakes
• 4 skinless salmon fillets
INGREDIENTS
• 3 tbsp dark soy sauce
• 3 tbsp runny honey
• 1 tbsp sesame oil
1. Make a marinade by whisking
together your soy sauce, honey,
sesame oil, garlic, ginger and chilli
flakes. Pour the marinade over the
salmon and set aside in the
fridge for at least 30 minutes.
2. Heat the air fryer to
180°C/350°F.
3. Lift the salmon fillets out of the
marinade (reserve the marinade
in the bowl), place them in the air
fryer basket and cook for 7-9
minutes until cooked and flaky.
4. Meanwhile, tip the reserved
marinade into a small saucepan
over a medium heat, add ½ cup
of water and reduce until glossy.
Taste to check the seasoning –
you might need to add a splash
of rice wine vinegar and honey
to balance the flavours. Blitz
until smooth if you like.
5. Serve the salmon with the
sauce drizzled over, accompanied
by steamed rice and broccoli,
if liked.

FOOD
PORCHETTA
Serves 4-6 Takes 1 hour 15 minutes, plus overnight chilling and resting
“A pork dish for when you want
to push the boat out for an extraspecial dinner, made much easier
with your air fryer. This one takes
a bit longer but, as always, is
1,000% worth the wait. Treat
yourself this Sunday.”
INGREDIENTS
• 1 x 800g-1kg/1¾-2¼lb piece
of whole, bone-out pork belly,
preferably a long piece (your
butcher might be best for this)
‘For when you want
to push the boat out
for an extra-special
dinner, made much
easier with your
air fryer’
• Salt
• 1 tbsp fennel seeds
• 1 tbsp chilli flakes
• 3 cloves garlic, peeled
• 3 rosemary sprigs, leaves
picked
• 3 thyme sprigs, leaves picked
• 1 lemon, zested
• 1 tbsp olive oil
• 1 tsp sea salt flakes
• Freshly ground black pepper
• 1 tsp baking powder
• Vegetable oil, for spraying
1. First, prep your pork belly.
Place it on a plate, skin-side up,
and season it with regular table
salt. Then, leave it uncovered in
the fridge overnight.
2. The next day, get the meat
out of the fridge and leave it to
come up to room temperature
(at least 30 minutes).
3. While the meat is doing that,
make the filling. Heat a frying
pan over a medium heat, add the
fennel seeds and chilli flakes and
toast until you can smell them
getting aromatic (about 30-40
seconds). Then, get them into a
pestle and mortar with the garlic,
fresh herbs, lemon zest and olive
oil, and mash them together
until they form a paste of sorts.
Add the sea salt flakes and
season with black pepper.
4. Turn your pork belly upside
down so that the meat is
uppermost, then, using a sharp
knife, make a diamond criss-cross
pattern in the meat and begin to
run in the herby paste, completely
covering the meat in an even layer.
5. Place 3-5 pieces of butcher’s
twine (long enough to tie around
your meat) underneath the pork
belly, equally spaced apart, and
then begin to roll the pork belly
so that the skin is on the outside
and the filling is encased. Using
the middle string first, tie the pork
belly in place with a simple double
knot. (You can search ‘butcher’s
knot’ online to learn how to do it
professionally, but anything that
holds will do.)
6. Heat the air fryer to
120°C/250°F.
7. Rub the baking powder all over
the skin of the rolled pork belly
and spray the air fryer basket and
pork belly with some oil.
8. Place the porchetta in the air
fryer basket and cook for 25
minutes, then turn the air fryer
up to 200°C/400°F and cook for a
further 20 minutes until it’s
cooked through. After this, if your
skin still needs a bit more crisping
to your liking, cook in 5-minute
intervals until you get it just right.
POPPY'S SUGGESTIONS
• You can easily replace
the flavours in this recipe
with any others you prefer.
Black garlic is a delicious
replacement for standard
garlic, or you could even
use smoked garlic.
Alternatively, you could
change the herbs: try using
lemon thyme or sage.
• For a more classic British
approach, serve the
porchetta with sautéed
buttered leeks, roast
potatoes, onion gravy and
a dollop of apple sauce.

CHOCOLATE FUDGE CAKES
“Live your full Bruce Bogtrotter
fantasies with these delicious
chocolate fudge cakes. If you’re
like me and saw the scene from
Matilda as less of a punishment,
more of a dream come true,
make these cakes and shove
them in your mouth!”
INGREDIENTS
• 200g/7oz 70% dark chocolate,
broken into pieces
• 200g/7oz, plus 1 tbsp, unsalted
butter
• 250g/9oz, plus 2 tbsp, plain
flour, sifted
• 1 tsp baking powder
• 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda
• 200g/7oz light brown soft sugar
• 4 tbsp cocoa powder, sifted
Makes 12 Takes 40-45 minutes, plus cooling
• A pinch of salt
• 3 eggs
• 100ml/4fl oz buttermilk
• 4 tbsp espresso coffee
For the chocolate ganache
• 50g/2oz 70% dark chocolate,
broken into pieces
• 50g/2oz milk chocolate,
broken into pieces
• 1 tbsp golden syrup
• A pinch of sea salt flakes
• 100ml/4fl oz double cream
1. Heat your air fryer to
160°C/325°F. Line a cupcake or
muffin tray with cupcake cases.
The cupcake tin depends on the
size of your air fryer (if a 6-cup
muffin tin fits, use this and bake
in 2 batches), or you can make a
rough-and-ready cupcake mould
out of foil to support the cases.
2. Melt the dark chocolate and
butter together in a heatproof
bowl set over a pan of gently
simmering water, or in a
microwave. Stir briefly to combine,
then remove from the heat.
3. Meanwhile, add the flour,
baking powder, bicarbonate of
soda, sugar, cocoa powder and salt
to a large bowl and whisk together.
4. Whisk the eggs, buttermilk
and coffee into the chocolate
mixture until evenly combined,
then fold in the dry ingredients.
5. Spoon the mixture equally
into the cupcake cases and bake
for 18-20 minutes (on or off the
baking tray, depending on the
size of your air fryer basket), or
until a skewer inserted in the
centre of the cupcakes comes out
clean. Remove cakes from the air
fryer and allow to cool in the tray,
before placing on a wire rack
and cooling fully.
6. Meanwhile, make the ganache.
Add the chocolates, golden syrup
and sea salt flakes to a heatproof
bowl. Warm the cream in a small
saucepan until steaming, then
pour the hot cream over the
chocolate mixture and whisk to
combine. Allow to cool for 10
minutes or so, so that it’s
spreadable but not runny.
7. Spoon the ganache over the
top of the cakes and allow to set
before serving.

her music idol, Kylie Minogue, is the headline act.
In this exclusive interview with hello! the 48-year-old
mum of two excitedly recalls the moment their paths first
crossed, when she bumped into the Australian pop star at
the BBC in 2018 – in less than ideal circumstances.
“The first time I met her we were
in the ladies’ loos,” she recalls. “I
came out to wash my hands, she was
doing her lipstick. I introduced
myself and then did that thing that
you’re not supposed to do when
you work in entertainment. I said:
‘Miss Minogue, can I have a photo?’
and curtsied. She’s pop royalty!”
Revealing what amazed her the
most, Kate continues: “What people
don’t know is that I’m actually
shorter than Kylie. I’ve got a photo
of me and her standing back to
back and I’m a good half inch
shorter,” she says of the 5ft star.

is set in 1970s Liverpool during

real-life rise of rock band T. Rex, it
explores the life-affirming power of
music through the experiences of a
group of local children.
Kate is a regular presenter on BBC1’s long-running Songs of

identity as a friend, and even as a radio presenter too;
there’s a nurturing aspect to what we do.”
Candidly, Kate gives an insight into her close relationship
with her daughter. “Ruby has just got a new boyfriend so
she’s spending a lot of time away from home,” she says. “I
miss her like nothing else, but I have to wind it back. I’m
not like a regular mum. I’m a cool mum.”
Does she have any relationship advice for Ruby?
“Don’t go to bed on an argument, is a really good one,”
she muses. “Have your own space, have your own money.
Remember the person you have chosen to love; they have
chosen you too and that’s a very profound thing to be
chosen in the world.”
NEGOTIATING BUMPS IN THE ROAD
Her new book, Have a Little Faith, reflects on the lessons she
has learnt in love. Having been married to Graham for 25 of
their 30 years together, she cheekily reveals their secret.
“People say: ‘What’s the secret to a long and happy
marriage?’ Don’t get divorced,” says Kate. “Love is a choice.
We’ve been through bumps in the road, as invariably you do
in 30 years together. Sometimes we’ll have a little row and I
decide I’m not speaking to him or he’s not speaking to me,
but then we forget that we’re not speaking to each other.”
Writing down everything she has learnt on love and
death in a book has been daunting.
“It’s a bit scary isn’t it? I think at 48, you should stop
being scared of things. When you get to my age, people start
asking you what you’ve learnt. And I keep thinking: ‘I’m
sure I’ve got more to learn.’”
Kate reveals the influence of her mum Margaret, who
died in January this year. Dedicating the book to her, Kate
says: “My mum was an incredible woman and losing your
mum is like no other bereavement. It’s made me a better
priest and it’s made me a better mum.
“When your mum dies, as a mother, you suddenly feel at
the front of the queue. There’s nobody else in front of you.
It’s your gig now. I certainly feel like I’m in a new stage of
my mothering now that my mum is gone.”
