“Everything leading up to this was my training
ground, and now I’m executing everything I learnt
in the first 50 years,” the Australian fashion
designer tells hello! as she and her husband
Robert Walton open the doors to their magnificent
16th-century manor house in Devon.
“I’m armed and dangerous now, and I feel
amazing,” adds the businesswoman, now 51, whose
denim empire Donna Ida has earnt her the
nickname “Jean Queen” and a celebrity fanbase
including Amanda Holden, Jodie Kidd, Anthea
Turner and Millie Mackintosh.
Part of Donna’s new chapter in life is living out
her dream of setting up home in the English
countryside at Langdon Court.
With her creative flair and Robert’s status as
the godfather of hospitality, counting top chefs
Raymond Blanc and Heston Blumenthal among
his inner circle, the couple had all bases covered
when it came to overseeing a multimillion-pound
restoration of the beautiful grade II-listed Jacobean
manor house they bought in 2021.
And as they welcome us for this exclusive
photoshoot, it’s clear to see that their labour of
love has paid off. “We’re living a modern-day Good
Life,” says chef and restaurateur Robert, 68, who
was awarded an MBE in 2007 for services to the
hospitality industry.

Court is not just a home for Donna and Robert –
who married in London in 2010 after meeting in
one of Donna’s boutique stores – but a luxurious
private-hire venue that plays host to weddings,
photoshoots and wellness retreats.
The 16-bedroom residence, which features a
jungle-inspired space named Palm Court, a film
room and even a cosy tea-and-toast space, sits in ten
acres of land and is home to a menagerie of
animals including chickens, guinea fowl and geese
– not to mention Donna and Robert’s eight dogs…
Donna and Robert, you bought Langdon Court in
2021. How did you find this hidden gem?
Donna: “We were looking and one day, we saw a very
pretty house. Bobby Dazzler [her nickname for
Robert] said: ‘Actually, that’s a hotel.’ That’s when
we got the idea that instead of looking for a big
house, we should look for a small hotel. Because
Bobby Dazzler is in hospitality, he put his feelers out
and we found Langdon Court pretty quickly.”
Robert: “I like to say that we didn’t find Langdon –
Langdon found us. Its personality is addictive. The
house was in a poor state, but we didn’t see that – we
loved it and it seemed to love us. Now, here we are.”
You quickly set about returning the manor to its
former glory. Tell us about the work you did…
D: “People tried to cover its beauty during the
1960s and 1970s. The Victorian tiles in Palm Court
had been boarded over, a big inglenook in the
kitchen had been painted over and the flagstones
in the kitchen hallway had lino covering them.
“It’s insane, but fashion did go through that
period when nobody wanted anything old. Thank
God, all those original features were still there – we
just had to reveal them. We finished work in
September 2023 and had our first guests soon after.”
R: “We renovated every inch, including the gardens.
We rewired the place with 15 miles of wire.
“There are 500 years of history in this house and
some amazing people have been through its doors.
Prince Albert Edward, who became Edward VII,
came here partying and shooting. When you look
back at its history, you realise you’re just here for a
short period of time in the house’s life.”
Has living here transformed your lifestyle?
D: “Definitely. Living in the English

countryside is a dream come true for me. It’s

restful. We still travel back and forth to London for
work once a week or so, and I still love going to
London, but I really love coming home. We’ve got
the best of both worlds.”
The rose garden is a highlight of the grounds…
D: “Our rose garden is incredible; I absolutely love
it. It’s so nice to look out and enjoy it every single
day. David Austin Roses very kindly provided us
with roses to match the age of the house.”
R: “The gardens are probably the most historic
part of Langdon; they are the first part of the house
that became listed. We have gorgeous oldfashioned rose varieties like Emily Brontë, Olivia
Rose Austin and Gertrude Jekyll. The scent is
mind-blowing. Donna has also planted a lavender
bank and we’ve got 60,000 bees, so soon we’ll have
our own lavender Langdon honey.”
Talk us through your menagerie…
R: “We’ve got five chihuahuas, which we call our
Mexican army: Gonzalo, Rodrigo, Fernando,
Eduardo and Emilio. We also rescued three shiba
inus; the mum is called Queen of Shiba and the
two little girls are Coco and Momo.
“We have 30 birds, including ten geese, which we
rescued from a farmer who was going to sell them for
Christmas, as well as ducks, chickens that produce
our eggs, guinea fowl, pheasants, partridges…”
D: “And we have four lovebirds who live in Palm
Court. They’re called Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell,
Linda Evangelista and Jodie Kidd. Oh, and we’d
like a couple of donkeys!”
The dogs have their own apartment…
R: “We call them the chihuahua stables.”
D: “They’re on the same floor as us, so they get to
be with Mummy and Daddy. It’s so cute.”
What are your plans for Langdon Court?
11

DONNA’S ROBE: LANGDON COURT MANOR

R: “It feels more of a home than a hotel. We love
the idea of people taking it over, so it’s very much a
private-hire venue. It can be a shooting weekend, a
photoshoot or a party; it’s a venue for everything.”
D: “I host a pyjama party every three months. I
recently launched our Langdon Court Manor
home-inspired collection: we have pyjamas,
kimonos, body scrubs, bath milk, fudge, strawberry
jam, our own exclusive candle created by Rachel
Vosper – and it will continue to grow.
“Devon is very much about community spirit
and we have immersed ourselves in local life. We’d
love to host charity events at Langdon in the future,
raising funds for local causes such as schools,
homeless shelters, hospitals and the RNLI.”
How would you describe the decor of the house?
D: “We went for design that evokes a comfortable,
modern country house. All the rooms are individually
styled, so there are different moods in each one.”
Donna, how’s it going at your brand Donna Ida?
“Fashion is my first love, so it’s great that now
Langdon’s complete, I can be back working fulltime on Donna Ida and continuing to expand. Last
year, we launched a classic men’s shape called Jack,
named after my grandfather.”
The brand was inspired by your grandmother Ida.
Is her memory still a part of everything you do?
“Very much so. She used to make all her own
patterns out of newspapers and make clothes for the
family. She was an amazing housewife in rural
Australia. She was very much a can-do woman.”

You celebrated your 50th birthday last year. Are
you feeling better than ever?
“Yes, definitely. Everything leading up to being 50
was my training ground, and now I’m executing
everything I learnt in the first 50 years. I’m armed
and dangerous now, and I feel amazing.
“It was a good thing, turning 50 – you have that
feeling of being at a halfway point. Bring on the
second half.”
It has been 14 years since your lavish wedding at St
Paul’s Cathedral, which involved helicopters, a
Rolls-Royce Phantom, a cake from The Ritz and a
room dedicated to desserts. What’s the secret to
your happy marriage?
D: “I’m very, very independent and I think Bobby
Dazzler letting me do whatever I want to do is
probably the secret [laughs
[laughs].
]. I just crack on and do
whatever I want and then Bobby tries to contain
me a little bit.”
R: “I gave that up! I think the secret is that we’re
both driven and creative. We’re together when
we’re together, but we both do our thing. Neither
of us tries to outdo the other. And Donna’s straighttalking, so you know where you are.”
Robert, as president of the Restaurant Association
and chairman of the Young Chef Young Waiter
competition, you’re the godfather of hospitality…
“I want to make Langdon Court the home of
hospitality. I’m planning to organise an event where
I invite legendary chefs like Raymond Blanc and
Gordon Ramsay to sit around my table and talk.
“We’re in talks to make the Young Chef Young
Waiter competition into a TV series, which would
be amazing. It goes all around the world, so
between that and running Langdon Court, I’m
always zipping off somewhere. There’s zero
downtime when you live with Donna Ida.”
You had tongue cancer seven years ago. How are
you doing now?
“I had radical treatment and what happens is not
very pleasant, because your taste buds get killed. You
have to learn to taste again. There are things I don’t
have now, like wine and spirits, because they don’t
taste nice any more. The funny thing is, I can
only drink champagne, as that still tastes good!” H

ON A DAY OF POMP AND PAGEANTRY
THE KING AND QUEEN
GIVE A WARM WELCOME TO THEIR
KNIGHTS AND LADIES ON GARTER DAY
J
ust a few days after celebrating
Tr o o p i n g t h e C o l o u r i n
London, the royal family were out
in force again to attend the Order
of the Garter service at St George’s
Chapel in Windsor Castle.
The King, who has returned to
royal duties while continuing to
receive cancer treatment, was on
sparkling form, supported by his
wife the Queen to take part in the
centuries-old ceremony.
In his role as Sovereign of the
Garter, wearing the blue velvet
robes, glittering insignia and white
plumed caps of the UK’s oldest
and most senior order of chivalry,
His Majesty processed down the
hill from the castle quadrangle to
the chapel’s west door, flanked by
his Knights and Ladies.
These included the Queen, the
Princess Royal, the Prince of Wales
– who wore his Garter vestments at
his father’s coronation – the Duke
of Edinburgh and the Duke
and Duchess of Gloucester, who
was installed as a Royal Lady
Companion in April.
The Danish-born Duchess is the
first non-blood royal not married
to the monarch or heir to be given
such an honour, which is in
recognition of her years of service
as a senior working royal.

FAMILY TOGETHER
The Duke of Kent, who was
appointed to the Order of the
Garter in 1985, travelled to the
service by car, while the Duchess of
Edinburgh, elegant in a pink and
cream floral dress with a matching
hat, watched the procession from
the Galilee Porch alongside
Princess Anne’s husband Vice
Admiral Sir Tim Laurence.
However, the Princess of Wales,
who has attended the event in
support of Prince William since
2008, was absent.
Kate, 42, had announced the
previous week that she would need
to continue her cancer treatment
“for a few more months” and so
was continuing to focus on her
recovery following her high-profile
appearance at Trooping the
Colour two days before.
Since it was founded in the 14th
century by Edward III, the Order
has contained a limited number of
Knights and Ladies chosen solely
by the monarch. Over the
centuries, members have come
primarily from the aristocracy and
foreign royals.
Today, however, Companions
are drawn from all areas of
society as the monarch

MAJESTIC CEREMONY
As always, hundreds of people gathered
to watch the historic spectacle from the
lower ward of Windsor Castle.
The procession was led by a military
band, followed by the Military Knights of
Windsor, the Heralds, the Companions,
then finally the royals. This year, the duty
of carrying the King’s trailing robes fell to
the young pages of honour Guy Tryon
and Charles van Cutsem.

The members of the Order were
wearing their distinctive velvet mantles,
embroidered with the heraldic shield of
St George’s Cross surrounded by a garter.
In contrast, the Sovereign’s bears the
Garter Star.
The vestments also include a gold
collar attached to the shoulders with
white ribbons, from which hangs the
Great George – a figure of St George
slaying a dragon. There is also an actual
blue velvet garter, worn around the calf
for Knights and the arm for Ladies.
Once inside the chapel, the King was
greeted with a fanfare and the national
anthem, before he welcomed his new
Companions to take their seats.
“It is our pleasure that Her Royal
Highness the Duchess of Gloucester be
installed,” he said, turning to other
new members to add: “It is our pleasure
that the Companions newly invested
be installed.”
Following the service, the procession

ward by horse-drawn carriage or car

CELEBRATING 25 YEARS OF MARRIAGE
THE DUKE AND DUCHESS OF EDINBURGH
PUT THEIR HAPPINESS ON DISPLAY WITH A NEW PORTRAIT
TO MARK THEIR SILVER WEDDING ANNIVERSARY
20
ith their heads close together in an
W
informal pose, the Duke and Duchess
of Edinburgh look very much in love in an
affectionate portrait released to mark their
silver wedding anniversary.
Taken in the grounds of their home,
Bagshot Park in Surrey, by photographer
Chris Jelf, the image shows Edward and
Sophie casually dressed as they celebrate 25
years of married life.
The low-key nature of the portrait reflects
the couple’s style. When they married in
June 1999, Edward, then 35, and Sophie, 34,
requested a simple family affair, with no
pageantry and little pomp.
In their vows, they promised to stay
together “as long as we both shall live” – and
Edward is the only one of Queen Elizabeth II
and Prince Philip’s four children still
married to their first spouse, with his siblings
having all been divorced and the King and
Princess Royal having both remarried.
STRONG BOND
Fast forward 25 years and Edward and Sophie,
known as the Earl and Countess of Wessex
before his brother Charles ascended the
throne, are parents to Lady Louise
Mountbatten-Windsor, 20, and 16-year-old
James, now Earl of Wessex.
To mark Edward’s 60th birthday in March,
Sophie surprised her husband with a tearful
tribute, taking to the stage during an
engagement in Leeds to call him “the best of
fathers, the most loving of husbands” and
“still my best friend”. In return, Edward said
on TV: “She’s been an absolutely brilliant
rock and I’m incredibly lucky that I found
Sophie and that she found me.”
Ahead of their nuptials at Windsor Castle,
groom-to-be Edward also revealed what makes
the pair tick, saying: “We manage to have a
good laugh about things most of the time,
and we happen to love each other, which
H
is the most important thing of all.”

Fans were delighted

to Meghan, 30, it’s down to

We communicate very well.”
FOOTBALL CRAZY
Also performing was former Little

star juggling a successful pop career
with a busy home life.
Perrie, 30, who has two-year-old
son Axel with her footballer fiancé

the day was extra busy because she
was also getting ready to cheer on

The line-up also included singer

Capital FM DJ Rio Fredrika, who
hosts the mid-morning show and

“I’ve never seen her perform

all of her songs are the biggest

Sabrina, 25, is in the spotlight
not just for her music, but also her
relationship with actor Barry

incredible.” The couple were later
photographed leaving celebrity
hotspot Chiltern Firehouse, making
the most of their time in London.
Also on the bill were Raye,
Sugababes, David Guetta, Becky
Hill and US singer-songwriter
Benson Boone, who showed off
some impressive moves during his
hit Beautiful Things.

“I loved Benson – he was
backflipping on the stage.
Everyone’s a bit obsessed with him,”
Rio said, adding of Raye: “She’s so
emotional and she’s not afraid to
get into it.”
For the DJ, it’s not the starstudded line-up, but the event’s
atmosphere that makes it so special.
“Electric comes to mind,” she
said. “I’ve been going to the ball
since I was a teenager and now I
work on it and it always feels the

having a really good time. It’s
just mad and it’s so beautiful.” H

and actress Nicole Scherzinger, 45, performed
during the in-memoriam segment to
honour theatre stars who had died
during the previous year.
Meanwhile, the winners’
acceptance speeches were filled
with emotion – and not just on
stage. Merrily We Roll Along
actor Jonathan Groff,
39, who won Best
Lead Actor in a
Musical, was seen
wiping tears from
his eyes after co-star
Daniel Radcliffe was
named Best Actor in a
Featured Role in a
Musical.
Daniel, 34, spoke to press
including hello! and shared
how special it felt to receive his
first Tony on Father’s Day, with his own
dad, Alan, in the audience and as father to his
one-year-old son with long-term girlfriend Erin
Darke, 39.
DAD’S THE WORD
The actor described it as an “emotionally
charged” experience. He said that on the day
of the ceremony, while rehearsing for a
performance with his co-stars, he had received a
number of sweet texts about being a dad.
“It’s lovely. I haven’t spent a lot of time with my
son today, so I’m excited about seeing him
tomorrow,” he said.
“My dad’s in the audience and he’s a huge
part of all the music I’ve listened to.”
Daniel also spoke about finding his footing in
the industry after the Harry Potter
otter films brought
him international success, saying that Broadway
was where he “found myself as an actor”.
And he revealed that he has grown to love
New York. “I live here now, I love it, my kid can
grow up here. I feel so lucky to be a part of

Xander has also inherited the
talent that has made his Welsh
mother a favourite with the royal
family. “He’s the one who might end
up singing one day,” she says.
“He’s got a very similar tone to the
one I had when I was his age, and I
can tell he likes music. He’s cautious
and kind and funny and reminds me
of my dad.”
Her father, Selwyn, who died
when Katherine was just 15, quietly
encouraged her singing, along with
her mum. “I feel very fortunate that I
didn’t have pushy parents.” Taking
their lead, she’s determined not to
play the role of stage mum, however
talented her children might be.
“I want my children to do what’s in
their heart, and if they decide that’s
what they want to do, I’ll support and
help them. But I don’t want them to
feel any pressure.
“I want them to be able to love
music and have that as a tool in their
life because it’s something they enjoy.
If anything else comes from it, that’s
a bonus.”
Her family will be at the front of
the audience when Katherine takes
to the Great Oak Stage at BST Hyde
Park, accompanied by the Royal
Philharmonic Orchestra, for a
50-minute set that will include
classical masterpieces as well as
contemporary hits.
She’s keeping schtum on the
“beloved” songs she’ll be performing,
but some, she reveals, will have a
London theme.
“It will be nice to recognise our
amazing city and pay homage to it
through music,” she says. “It’s such
an amazing event for the UK and
London, and this is the first classical
concert [to headline the festival], so
it’s lovely to be part of it.
“I’m hoping the British weather
plays ball,” she adds. “But Brits are so
good at bringing the right attitude
that it doesn’t matter [if it rains].
Hopefully it will be one of those
British summer nights that will always
stay in my mind.”
BRANCHING OUT
Her diversification into the gin
business might seem left-field – after
all, classical singers are renowned for
the care they take of their voices.

music and do what’s
in their heart’

Katherine sips water, throat tea
and manuka honey before each
performance; there’s not a drop of
mother’s ruin in sight. But her new
label, which she developed with
Andrew, is of a superior quality.
“I’ve always been a gin fan and gin
drinker,” she says, “and when I came
to London to study at the Royal
Academy of Music, they spoke to us
about alcohol and our voices, and
told us what we could and couldn’t
drink.
“In 1998, there wasn’t a choice of
mixers and you couldn’t drink gin
neat. So I thought one day I’d like to
create a gin that’s really clean, where
I knew what was in it and that my
singing teacher would approve of.”
She and Andrew got together with
husband-and-wife distillers in
Swansea, and Cygnet was born. “It’s
made just down the road from my
mum, which she’s thrilled about,
because all the females in our family
drink gin. She can pop in at any point
for some quality-control checks,” she
says, laughing.
“I’m the founder of it, it’s my baby,
and I’m having an absolute blast
doing it. It’s a happy business to work
in and I get to work with my husband.”
DREAM TEAM
The pair have also joined forces for a
second film project – their first,
Minamata,, directed by Andrew and
Minamata
starring Johnny Depp, was shot in
2019.
Their latest, The King of Covent
Garden,, follows the story of the
Garden
British-German composer Handel,
focusing on his oratorio Messiah
Messiah,,
described by Katherine as “arguably
the greatest piece of classical music
ever written”.
She will be an adviser and executive
producer on the film, which begins
shooting next year, directed by
Andrew and starring Sir Anthony
Hopkins in the lead role.
“I can’t wait to share more about
it,” she says teasingly.
But first there are more
concerts, including the Llangollen
International Musical Eisteddfod in
Wales, and new music in the autumn
– and, as always, music at the heart of
her home.
“When the kids are tired, Andrew
has the greatest playlist. He’ll put
something on and before you know
it, they’re buzzing,” she says.
“The soundtrack to our lives is
H
so important.”

Campbell has ruled the runway for four
decades. But last week, she had a new catwalk:
London’s historic V&A museum, where she is
being honoured in the new exhibition Naomi:
In Fashion, which features some of her favourite
couture pieces to celebrate her career.
“The exhibition showcases some of the most
special moments from my colourful journey. It’s
a celebration of fashion, creativity and the
power of pursuing your dreams,” she said.
A roll call of fashionable friends was on hand
to join the 54-year-old supermodel at the V&A’s
summer party, including fellow runway stars
Kate Moss, Jodie Turner-Smith and Adwoa
Aboah, fashion icon Daphne Guinness, singer
Grace Jones, and actress Elizabeth Hurley and
her director son Damian.
Styled by Law Roach, Naomi stood out in a
white halterneck gown from event sponsor Boss,
worn with dazzling Bulgari jewels.
Fellow supermodel Kate was chic in a soft
pink slip dress, paired with a contrasting black
tuxedo jacket, to pose alongside Daphne, who
wore a metallic catsuit.

of Wales was every inch the doting mother as
she gazed adoringly at her children.
But it was her tender moments with her only
daughter Princess Charlotte and their public
display of affection that touched those watching
the royal family’s traditional annual appearance
for the King’s official birthday.
Kate lovingly stroked Charlotte’s long hair
and arranged it down her back, giving an insight
into their warm, tight-knit relationship.

CLOSE RELATIONSHIP
“Kate and Charlotte have a unique bond and
that stands out,” says royal photographer Samir
Hussein, who captured the heartwarming
moment on camera. “There was a lot of
interaction between them.
“Kate put her arms on Charlotte’s shoulders
and she was looking down lovingly to check on
her all the time and playing with her hair at
times. Charlotte just looked so sweet and they
both looked so happy and natural together.”

Charlotte’s birth, tells hello!

their tours to Canada and Poland
and Germany, where Kate was
carrying Charlotte in her arms.
“Princess Charlotte is very like
her mother in her mannerisms
and you can see she looks up to
her a lot.”
Ingrid Seward, author of My
Mother and I: The Inside Story of the
King and Our Late Queen,
Queen, agrees,
telling hello!
hello!:: “Kate and Charlotte
are great friends and I think to
Kate, their bond is very precious.
“The mother-daughter
relationship is obviously
particularly important to Kate
because she has such a close
relationship with her own mother,
Carole Middleton. They are a
very, very close family, which is
something the late Queen really
liked and thought would play into
Kate’s hands and the position that
she was getting into.
“She had such a stable family
and I think that’s what Kate’s
trying to replicate.”
60 Mother and daughter’s closeness even extends to their wardrobe, with the pair co-ordinating at Trooping
– Kate in Jenny Packham with a Philip Treacy hat and Charlotte echoing the feel with a stylish bow on her
sailor dress. “They are both so photogenic and, because they clearly think quite a lot about how to coordinate their outfits, these photographs always work out really well,” says photographer Samir Hussein
TAKING CARE OF MAMA
Ingrid also believes Charlotte is
“protective” of her mother as she
continues to undergo cancer
treatment. “I think that Charlotte
is really taking care of her mum.
It was quite sweet the way she
stood in front of her and they
kept chatting.
“Charlotte seems to be very full
of admiration for her mother,
which I think is a lovely thing, too.”
Over the years, Kate and
Charlotte have enjoyed special
trips to the ballet and to the BBC
studios, where along with six-yearold Prince Louis they met the stars
of Strictly Come Dancing
Dancing..
They also share a love of sport,
and England Lionesses fan
Charlotte has joined Louis and
their big brother Prince George,
ten, in taking up football and
rugby, as well as tennis, dance and
gymnastics – no doubt encouraged
by Kate.
She even got to enjoy an outing
to the Commonwealth Games with
her parents in 2022, where she was
pictured watching the swimming
and gymnastics.
Perhaps inspired by her mother,
who is a skilled pianist, Charlotte
has also taken up the instrument,
as revealed by virtuoso Lang Lang
last year, after meeting Kate at the
Royal Variety Performance.
“Her Royal Highness talked
about Charlotte’s piano playing,”
he said. “I’m sure she’s good. Her
Royal Highness said to me that she
said to Princess Charlotte: ‘Hey,
look, if you practise a lot, you can
be like him.’”

FAMILY TIES
Robert Jobson, whose biography
Catherine, the Princess of Wales

published this August, tells
hello!:: “Mother and daughter

the very close bond between them.
“But I suppose it also comes
from Kate’s close relationship
with her own mother Carole.
A n d she ’s go t a ve r y clos e
relationship with her sister Pippa,
too, that goes right back to when
they were very young.”
But, he adds: “Charlotte is not
just a Mummy’s girl though, she
very much loves being with her
dad, too. And she’s a big favourite
with the King – he always wanted
a daughter.”
Ingrid also draws a parallel
between the current and former
Princess of Wales – Prince William’s
mother Diana – and their loving
connections with their children.
“Diana was so tactile with her
boys and they were the mainstay
of her life and, in an unhappy
marriage, I think that she became
even more reliant on them,” she
says. “While Kate is going through
cancer treatment, her
children give her that boost.
Kate has always been
a hands-on mum with
her daughter, from

events, such as taking a backward glance at well-wishers while attending Easter Day service at Windsor

grandmother Carole Middleton in 2019 – Charlotte had seen her grandfather Michael in the crowd below

But it seems Charlotte is just as
keen to support her mother.
During the family’s balcony
appearance at Trooping, she was
seen reminding Louis to keep his
arms down during the playing of
the national anthem.
Over the years, she has often
been spotted keeping her brothers
in line during public outings.
“She’s really taken on that role
to help keep them in check a little
bit,” Samir tells hello!
hello!.. “She’s
definitely a little mini-mum taking
on that responsibility as well,
which is fun to see.”
“She’s aware of everything,”
adds Robert. “She’s obviously a
very sharp cookie. You get the
impression that she’s sort of
corralling them.
“Charlotte seems to be the
alpha girl in the middle, making
sure they follow protocol and
follow what’s expected of them,”
he continues. “She is learning that
from both her parents, but she
does seems to be a little mother
figure among her siblings.”
Royal fans will be hoping
mother and daughter appear in
public together again this summer,
perhaps at a sporting event if the
Princess feels well enough.
And as she continues to make
good progress in her recovery
from cancer, she will no doubt
have plenty of special shared
moments with her little girl to

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW AND PHOTOS
CELEBRATING THE LAUNCH OF HER NEW NOVEL
SANTA MONTEFIORE
ON FINDING PEACE AFTER THE DEATH OF
HER SISTER TARA PALMER-TOMKINSON
tatuesque in a crisp white trouser suit, Santa
S
Montefiore looks on top of the world. Striking a
series of elegant poses in a suite at London’s luxurious
Peninsula Hotel, she exudes confidence while chatting
to everyone on hello!
hello!’s
’s exclusive photoshoot and
interview.
The best-selling author is preparing to release her
27th novel, Shadows in the Moonlight,
Moonlight, and seems to be in
a great place. “I’m really happy,” she tells us. “I’m 54
and I’m absolutely where I’d like to be.
“Of course I’d like my body to look like a 30-yearold’s, but I accept the ageing process. I’m just happy
managing my life and not having to fit in. I think as you
get older, you are more you because you don’t care what
other people think. Happiness comes from being true
to yourself, in whatever form that takes.”
A lot of that happiness comes from her family and
work life. Santa and her husband, historian and fellow
author Simon Sebag Montefiore, have children Lily and
Sasha, both in their 20s. She talks enthusiastically about
how the family enjoy indulging in their coffee obsession
together, also describing how they potter around the
house while she’s busy writing at the kitchen table.
Santa’s epic tales of family
drama, historical fiction and love
stories have sold more than six
million copies around the world,
but she says: “It still feels exciting
when a novel comes out.
“I feel very pleased that, having
been rejected by three agents
when I was 30, I am now a
published author.
“I also think there’s a lesson in
it, because the ego is never
satisfied. It will always want more and there’s a point
when you have to say: ‘Hold on – I’m really happy with
what I have. I make enough money that I can go
shopping and buy myself something nice. I do what I
love, I work from home.’ You have to look at the things
you have and appreciate them.”
In Shadows in the Moonlight,
Moonlight, which Santa describes as a
“psychic detective novel”, heroine Pixie Tate can
connect with earthbound spirits and travel through
time – a spiritual skill she uses to solve the disappearance
of a young boy.
“She embodies a person in the past who can help her
discover what happened, so she slips back to Victorian
Cornwall to investigate a boy who goes missing.
“It’s got lots of twists and turns and there’s a big love
story,” she adds. “You don’t have to believe in the
paranormal to enjoy the book. It’s just another way of
slipping into the story.”
It will come as no surprise to Santa’s fans that there is
a paranormal element to her latest novel, given she has
always felt an affinity with the spiritual world.
“It sounds crazy, but I have had quite a few out-ofbody experiences myself,” she tells us. “As a child, I used
to wake in the night and hear people walking around my
room and see shadowy figures. I thought it was normal. I
would slip out of my body and fly around the garden
and they were the most blissfully, ecstatically happy
moments. The joy I experienced was indescribable.”
She has also been comforted by the occasions she
believes her sister Tara Palmer-Tomkinson has visited
her since Tara’s sudden death in 2017.
“The first time I saw her was in the night. She was
young, vibrant and happy and wearing a baby-pink
T-shirt. In the morning, when I called my mother to tell
her, she said: ‘We buried her in a baby-pink T-shirt,’ but
nobody knew that, so it was really extraordinary.
“Another time, I was staying in the mesa mountains
in Utah. And all the way driving from Las Vegas, I heard
this voice in my head going: ‘Santa, Santa, Santa,’ like a
singsong on a loop.
“When I got to the hotel, I had this urge to go and sit
on a mountain and meditate. The sun was going down,
and I closed my eyes and I tuned in and there she was. I
knew then that it had been her voice in my head saying
my name.
“The lights go off at funny times when I’m thinking
about her,” she adds. “Tara composed songs, and once
I was with the children not long after she died and I
played her music. My son said: ‘Do you feel sad when
you hear her music?’ And I said it actually made me feel
closer to her. Suddenly, all the lights went out. I said:
‘Thank you, Tara, for letting us know you are here.’ And
the lights went on again.”
The loss of her adored sister “hit me like a train”, she
says. “It taught me some valuable
things. One was that I can survive
anything. When I was absolutely
heartbroken, I thought: ‘I’m still
here and I’m still working and
I’m still loving and living.’
“It actually carved out a layer
within me that hadn’t been there
before,” she continues. “The
shadows were darker in my life,
but the light was also brighter
because of the contrast.”
The experience also taught her how to respond to
readers of her books who would tell her of their late
loved ones, she says. “I was always very quick to comfort
them and say: ‘They are still with you in spirit.’
“But when I lost Tara, I realised that’s not enough. I
know she’s still with me in spirit, but I can’t see her and
put my arms around her and I can’t hug her or talk to
her. I had been missing the point. So now when I meet
people, I’m able to communicate in a more constructive
way because I’ve suffered too and I can appreciate how
you miss the physical presence of that person.”
Santa has her own tarot cards and is adept at reading
them, although her husband has no interest and her
daughter, she says, uses the opportunity to talk through
what’s on her mind and doesn’t pay much heed to what
the cards say.
She writes every day and is strict with her output,
creating a playlist for each novel she is crafting so she
can “put in my earphones and be immediately
transported to the place I’m writing about”.
Currently working on the second and third books in
the series that begins with Shadows in the Moonlight,
Moonlight, she
also wants to add to her Flappy series while writing
another book about a coffee shop. “I get tired of having
this monkey on my shoulder [to write] all the time. But
then when I stop, I get bored. As soon as I get back into
a book again, I am excited and happy.”
She and her husband – whom she calls Sebag – have
collaborated on children’s novel The Royal Rabbits of
London,, which they hope will be made into an
London
animated TV series. There is also a film in

The couple both write from home, but love
to escape to the country whenever possible –
they own a cottage on the Palmer-Tomkinson
farm where Santa, Tara and their brother James
grew up.
Tara is never far from their thoughts. “We
talk about her a lot,” Santa says. “She was the
noisiest person in the family, the most colourful,
the most dramatic. In a way, life is much calmer
without that turbulence in our lives, but we
really miss the turbulence.
“My mother planted a garden for her. I got
director’s chairs commissioned for everyone in
the family with their names on and I got one for
Tara, too,” she adds. “She’s
not there to sit in it, but
she’s very much part

AS HE REVEALS THE ROMANTIC
MEANING OF SON WILDE’S NAME
JOEL DOMMETT
SHARES THE SECRETS TO HIS
NEW DAD-DUTY SKILLS
oel Dommett is wholeheartedly
J
embracing the chaotic
whirlwind of parenthood with his
wife Hannah Cooper after the
couple welcomed their first child,
son Wilde, last September.
And the TV star, 39, known for
presenting hit show Survivor
Survivor,
r, looks
to have mastered fatherhood when
we chat on a video call.
Having timed Wilde’s nap
perfectly, he proudly shows off the
playpen that the new parents have
created for their son, who is nearly
walking at eight and a half months.
“Hannah’s out today, so I’m on
daddy duty,” reveals Joel, who has
teamed up with Pampers Baby-Dry
Nappies after new research
showed that one in three UK
parents lose sleep because of
night-time nappy leaks.
Here, he talks fatherhood,
explains the sweet meaning behind
Wilde’s name and reveals his dream
show to work on…
Joel, let’s talk babies – how is it
going with Wilde?
“I didn’t even know this love
existed, the amount of love I feel
for this child. Yet it’s so hard,
especially at the start; you’re so
sleep-deprived. I almost love the
relentlessness of it in a weird way,
the routine, because my life is so all
over the place.
“One day I’m presenting Lorraine
Lorraine,
aine,
the next day The Masked Singer,
Singer
er, the
next I’m doing a stand-up gig at 1am
in a nightclub. It gives my life some
sort of hellish consistency.”

86 Joel puts a proud hand on wife Hannah Cooper’s bump (above) at
the Bafta TV Awards in London last May, four months before the
pair welcomed son Wilde (right with Joel). His name was inspired
by the Greek hotel in which they tied the knot (together next right)
Day last week…
“I still can’t believe I’m a dad. I
never thought I’d be responsible
enough to have a child, and luckily
I’m doing it with someone I like
and love very much. We help each
other out and that feels good.”
What has surprised you most about
being a dad?
“How much I enjoy it. Everyone
knows it’s really difficult, and
there are tough parts like sleep
deprivation, but I never thought I
would enjoy it so much. I thought it
was just something that you did, but
I can’t imagine my life any other
way now.
“I feel more complete than I’ve
ever felt in my life, and it makes
everything feel as though there’s a
reason. I just really love it.”
Tell us about the name Wilde…
“We got married at a hotel in
Mykonos, in Greece, called The
Wild. I was weirdly going to get a
tattoo that said ‘wild’, and then
when Hannah was pregnant, she
said: ‘What do you think of the
name Wilde?’
“I was like, ‘What, as in the hotel?’
She said: ‘Yeah.’ It also has Dutch
connotations and Hannah’s Dutch.
Now we’re just grateful that we
didn’t get married in a Travelodge
and have a baby called Trav.”
What is Wilde like?
“I feel like he’s a mover, not a talker.
He’s crawling everywhere – and so
fast. We’re moments away from it
becoming very difficult.”
Is he a good sleeper?
“He’s getting there now. We’re

know this love
existed, the love I
feel for this child’
super-scheduled people; we’re
the worst. We’re those people you
hate hanging out with. At a
barbecue, we’ll say: ‘Sorry, we’ve
got to go – it’s 12.55pm.’
“The only things that really
wake him up at night are his
explosive poos.
“They blow my mind. But
Pampers have a Stop & Protect
Pocket that prevents the poonami
from going up the back.
“When Hannah was pregnant,
we bought all these cute clothes,
but we’ve used none of them.
“He lives in pyjamas with two
zips. When we leave the house, I
put a cardigan on top. Who are
these people getting their
children dressed?”
We love Never Have I Ever,
Ever, the
podcast you and Hannah make
together. She’s very funny…
“She’s great, isn’t she? Wilde finds
her so funny and it annoys the hell
out of me. I’m like: ‘What are you
doing that I’m not?’
“I’m supposed to have 15 years
of stand-up comedian experience
and I’m doing all the faces, then
she comes along, goes ‘peek-aboo!’ and he loses his mind. She’s
so funny to babies.”
Finally, what’s your dream show to
work on?
“It’s The Masked Singer.
Singer
er. I genuinely
love doing it. It’s a Saturday night
TV show that people watch and
enjoy as a family.
H
“That’s the dream.”

tearful Celine Dion battled
her emotions as she introduced
the premiere of a candid new
documentary about her struggles
with her health.
In I Am: Celine Dion,
Dion , the
Canadian singer opens up about
the rare neurological disorder
stiff-person syndrome, with which
she was diagnosed in 2022.
Attending the premiere at New
York’s Paris Theater last week,
Celine paid tribute to her three
children with her late husband
René Angélil – René-Charles, 23,
and 13-year-old twins Nelson and
Eddy – as well as her doctors.
“Of course, I wouldn’t be here

from my wonderful children,” she
said as she gestured to her sons,
who were all there to support her.
“Thank you, René-Charles.
Thank you, Nelson. Thank you,
Eddy. And thanks to you, my fans
– your presence in my journey
has been a gift beyond measure,”
continued Celine, 56.
“Your never-ending love and
support have delivered me to this
moment. One of the stories you
will hear from me in this movie as I
was reading and learning about my
condition: I compared myself –
and I’m not saying this because
we’re in New York – but I compared
myself to an apple.
“When I said to myself that I
compared myself to an apple from
a tree [I said]: ‘I don’t want you
[fans] to wait in line any more if I
don’t have any shiny apples for you.’
“A couple of days ago, I saw a
message from a fan and it said:
‘We’re not here for the apple.
We’re here for the truth.’”
The star also took time to
mention Dr Amanda Piquet, saying
that her neurologist had “delivered
an important result for me: she has
replaced my fear with hope”.
POIGNANT MOMENT
As Celine was comforted by RenéCharles, who gave her a tissue to
wipe away her tears, she ended by
saying: “I cannot believe how
fortunate I am to have my friends
in my life. Thank you from the
bottom of my heart for being part
of my journey. This movie is my
love letter to each of you.”
The audience then rose to give
her a standing ovation before the
documentary began.
Directed by Emmy Award
winner Irene Taylor, it offers
Celine’s fans an intimate look at
her life as she learns to live with
her condition, a progressive illness
that affects muscle control and
leads to stiffness and spasms.
The Grammy Award-winning
singer recently revealed that she
began to experience symptoms 17
years ago but tried to deal with it
privately before receiving a formal
diagnosis in late 2022, leading to
the cancellation of a world tour.
The illness means she now finds
it hard to control the pitch of her
famous voice, although she has
not yet ruled out a future
H
return to performing.

TRINNY’S
NEW MOVE
s a successful fashion and
beauty influencer, Trinny
Woodall has more than a
million followers hanging
on her every word. With her
global beauty brand Trinny
London, which is worth a reported £180m, she
champions a streamlined approach to self-care
featuring a growing range of hybrid cosmetics
and hard-working skin solutions and tools.
Here, Trinny, 60, introduces hello! to her
latest launch, The Elevator, a topical neck
treatment she promises will fight signs of
ageing, pigmentation and “tech neck”.
96
Trinny, why have you launched The Elevator?
“Selfishly, I wanted to deal with my own neck
and found myself wondering: ‘What is out
there?’ I couldn’t find anything that actually
worked for me. There are creams that smell
delicious and have incredible textures, but I’ve
never seen results.
“There are also in-clinic treatments you can
have, but I felt like they only last for a very
short time. I’d never have surgery on my neck,
that’s a very big decision.
“But I wasn’t actually planning a neck
cream until we discovered this wonderful
ingredient which gives us a 92 per cent claim
of tightening of the jawline.
“It took 16 goes to get the formulation right
and we also put three other ingredients in to
tackle horizontal lines, pigmentation and
stretchmarks on your breasts.”
How do you apply it?
“You need very little and you feel it
immediately. I don’t like that sense of
tightening, but you do feel it working and
it doesn’t feel sticky.
“I take two pumps and start under the
jawline. When we go through life, we get
gristle on our bone – that’s just age. I like
pushing that back into my ear, from the
middle of underneath my jaw. Take three
fingers and really push back and then down.
You can also use a gua sha with it.
“Then I like to do this little scissoring
[motion] under my chin, to give tension to
that skin. And I always put the last little bit
on my hands.”
Does it work as a preventative measure?
“We all use our phones a lot and anyone who
is 35 has probably used a mobile phone since
they were 15. I look at women in their 30s and
they have lines that are more noticeable than
BEAUTY
on someone that age 20 years ago, because of
their phone use and that default position of
looking down. If you’re the type of person that
likes to future-proof, use this product like you
would an SPF50.”
Trinny’s
power
selection
Do you know your average daily screentime?
“I do a lot of work on my phone, so probably
about six hours.”
What are your morning skincare steps?
“I always clean my skin in the morning because
I’m taking off retinoids from the night before.
I’m also taking off all of the toxins that have
come up – I call it a witch’s brew and I want to
get them off my skin.
“I do an AHA/PHA cleanser in the shower
while I wash my hair and then I put on a PHA
exfoliant. Followed by [Trinny London] Plump
Up with lots of peptides and a bit of our
vitamin C. It is very strong, so I put it on my
forehead and my cheeks, where I have a
propensity to get pigmentation, but I avoid
more sensitive areas under the eyes. Then I put
on The Elevator and lastly the SPF50.”

Do you have a favourite fragrance?
“At the moment, it’s Aesop Marrakech Intense
and I love it. My nephew gave it to me for
Christmas and I haven’t taken it off.
“I love fragrance – I have a tray with about
30 on it. Years ago, I worked with Caron in
Paris, developing fragrance. I use a mixture,
and I like quite a few male fragrancess, like
What are your hair heroes?
“I use Hairstory, which is a conditioner and
shampoo in one. It’s amazing.
“I’ve discovered the incredible Schwarzkopf
Gliss Night Elixir, too. When you have hair that
feels like straw, put it on overnight and in the
morning, when you wash and style it, you
think: ‘I’ve got my hydration back.’”

Do you ever use self-tan?
“I never do. I don’t believe in it. It clogs the
pores, it’s uneven and it doesn’t promote a
healthy relationship with the colour of
your skin.
“There’s other ways to bring life into your
skin if you feel washed out. Blusher is the

and gives a brightness to your eyes. I put a

How much water do you drink a day?
“Not enough. I should drink two and a half
litres. I definitely drink half a litre in the
morning and half at night. In the day, I drink
half, but it’s the other litre that I need to get in
there now.”
What’s on your bedside table?
“Books I want to read, a stand for my phone,
water and the This Works Deep Sleep Pillow
Spray for sleeping. I love Victoria Cator
candles. She has one called Rouge Anciens and
it’s the most beautiful, quite complex smell.”
Lastly, what’s one thing that we will be
surprised to know about you?
“I have the most appalling voice for singing.
It’s like a cat screeching. But I don’t think
people will be surprised to know that because
I’ve sung a bit on Instagram and people have
said: ‘Trinny, really? Shut up.’ I love karaoke –

I’d invest in an under-eye cream, too.

rowing up in Paris during the
1990s, with a French mother and
Chinese father, Mélanie Huynh
idolised supermodels for their
energy and physiques.
“My parents were always into wellness and
healthy eating,” the mother of two tells
hello!. “And when I started at Vogue,
ogue I was
working on lots of skincare and beauty shoots.
I had the opportunity to speak to lots of
experts and they would share amazing tips.”
From there, the seed was planted for what
would become Holidermie, a product range
and online platform promoting a more
ritualistic approach to self-care.
“For me, it’s about longevity and holistic
beauty,” Mélanie says. “I wanted to align beauty
with supplements to nourish the body from the
inside out, as well as provide effective tools.”
Here, she discusses the importance of
breathwork, intimate wellness and the female
founders we should all be following.
Mélanie, you recently returned from a wellness
retreat. What was the highlight?
“I was in Sardinia with friends. It’s part of the
Blue Zone [a region where inhabitants have a
longer life expectancy than average], so it’s
interesting to learn about what they eat and
see how close they are to nature.
“We did yoga, but it was much more than
that. I learnt different breathing methods; as
you get older, you realise how controlling your
breath can regulate your day-to-day.”
What does your morning routine look like?
“I use my tongue scraper and do some oil
pulling [a mouthwash with oil]. Then I do
some dry brushing before my shower – it’s an
Ayurvedic ritual. And I’m addicted to cold
showers! After that, I’ll do some face yoga for
two or three minutes to get the lymphatic
system working and then apply my skincare.”
How do you approach your diet?
“I’ve always loved herbal teas and Ayurvedic
and Chinese medicines. I don’t eat meat,
although sometimes I’ll eat fish. But I don’t
eat gluten or dairy, and try to
consume the smallest amount

of sugar possible.”
How do you keep fit?

and I really love it. I also love

important that women’s voices are now being
heard and that they can speak freely about
their periods and menopausal symptoms.”
How do you balance running a business
with being a parent?
“I am organised and prioritise my day. My
daughters are 15 and ten, so it’s a bit easier. It’s
more about having quality time with them and
not having my phone in front of me all day. I try
to be there at the weekends –
it’s very important.”

Do you have any wellbeing rituals for
when you travel?
“I always try to eat right for my skin, and I use
cryo tools to work on my lymphatic system.
“Getting outside to do some yoga is
important. I do a lot of breathing exercises to
help me. And I love the Calm app. I download
it on my phone to use when I’m travelling.”
What can we learn from French women when
it comes to wellness?
“French women are more focused on skincare
than make-up. It’s more of a natural look.”
Can you tell us about a wellness trend that
excites you at the moment?

Which other wellness
founders do you admire?
“I have such a long list,
including my dear friend
[make-up artist] Violette.
I’ve never met Gwyneth
Paltrow but I’d love to.
I’ve always been a big fan
of Elle Macpherson, and Rosemary Ferguson –
I think she’s amazing.”
What would we find on your bedside table?
“At the moment, I’m reading a great book
called Mathilde à Paris
aris [by Mathilde Favier,
head of public relations for Dior Couture],
which has all the best spots in the city.
“Usually I’ll have some hand cream, and
while I’m reading, I’ll do an LED mask. It’s
great because it’s the only time I’m not running
around. And I sleep with a silk pillowcase.”
When do you feel most relaxed?
“I love being at home with my girls, reading
books or watching movies. Or seeing my
friends – just staying in my little cocoon.”

these scrumptious
bakes from his
debut cookbook are
guaranteed to put a
smile on your face
INGREDIENTS
For the base
• 1 x 250g pack speculoos biscuits
(I use Biscoff)
• 80g/3¼oz unsalted butter, melted
For the cheesecake
• 2 tbsp instant coffee
• 2 tbsp boiling water
• 600g/1lb 5oz cream cheese
• 30g/1¼oz plain flour
• 200g/7oz light soft brown sugar
• 4 eggs
• 150ml/¼pt sour cream
• 4 tbsp coffee liqueur
To decorate
• 200ml/7fl oz double cream
• Chocolate coffee beans
• 1 tsp cocoa powder
Serves 8 Takes 1 hour 50 minutes, plus overnight chilling
1. Grease and line with baking
4. Using a stand mixer fitted with
parchment a 20cm/8in round
springform cake tin, then wrap it
with 2 layers of thick foil, all the way
up to the top edge. Preheat the
oven to 190°C, fan 170°C, gas 5.
2. For the base, crush the
speculoos biscuits to a fine crumb,
then stir through the melted
butter. Press into the base of the
prepared tin in an even layer and
bake in the oven for 10 minutes,
then set aside while you make the
filling. Turn the oven down to
170°C, fan 150°C, gas 3.

the instant coffee and boiling
water, then set aside to cool.
the paddle attachment (or a
mixing bowl and hand-held
electric whisk), beat the cream
cheese, plain flour and brown
sugar together until fluffy –
around 3-4 minutes.
5. In a measuring jug, whisk
together the eggs, sour cream,
coffee liqueur and cooled
brewed coffee until smooth,
then slowly add this into the
cream cheese mixture. Pour
into the prepared tin.
6. Place the tin in a deep roasting
tray and pour a kettle of boiling
water into the tray. Bake the
cheesecake for 1 hour 10 minutes,
or until the edges are set and the
middle is still slightly wobbly.
7. Once done, put a wooden
spoon in the oven door to keep
it ajar and leave the cheesecake
in the oven until the oven has
cooled down completely, then
transfer the tin to the fridge and
leave it there overnight.
8. When ready to serve, release
the cheesecake from the tin and
place on a plate. To decorate,
whip the cream until stiff peaks
form, then swoosh it over the
top of the cheesecake like the
foam on an espresso martini.
Decorate with chocolate coffee
beans and a dusting of cocoa.

really make anything out of them.”
Tell us about Baking on the Spectrum,
the online workshop and resource you
founded that aims to create an inclusive
and safe space for neurodiverse children
and their caregivers…
“Baking on the Spectrum is a project I
started as a response to Covid-19. The aim
was to give families a safe space in which to
bake with me online, while they were safe
and comfortable in their homes. I went from
working with 12 families to more than 100
families in London and abroad, too.
“What began as a response to the
pandemic turned into a programme that is
still ongoing – an inclusive space for not only
individuals on the spectrum, but also their
families and caregivers.
“We learn to bake together without using
machinery, to avoid motor sounds, and using
our hands for sensory play and exploring.
“The aim now is much larger, from
creating a safe space in which to learn a
valuable life skill to supporting parents and
carers in regard to fussy eating behaviours.”
MADELEINE BABA
Serves 6-9 Takes 45-55 minutes, plus resting
INGREDIENTS
For the madeleines
• 140g/4¾oz unsalted butter
• 125g/4½oz self-raising flour, plus
extra for dusting
• 2 large eggs
• 100g/4oz caster sugar
• Finely grated zest of 1 orange
• ½ tsp baking powder
• A pinch of salt
For the baba syrup
• 200g/7oz golden caster sugar
• 75ml/3fl oz dark rum
• Juice of 1 orange (use the orange
above and make up to 120ml/4¼fl
oz with water, if needed)
102
1. Start by melting the butter in
the microwave. Use a pastry
brush to brush the moulds of a
12-hole madeleine tray with some
of the butter. Use a small sieve
and dust the holes with flour to
coat well, tapping out any excess.
Set aside. Set the remaining
butter aside to cool.
2. Using a hand-held electric
whisk, beat the eggs and sugar
together until thick and airy.
Add the orange zest and fold
through. Sift in the flour and
baking powder in 2 parts,
folding through between each
addition. Add the salt, then drizzle
in the cooled melted butter,
stirring to mix well. Rest in the
fridge for a minimum of 30
minutes, or up to 6 hours.
3. Make the baba syrup by
adding all the ingredients to a
small saucepan and heating
gently to dissolve the sugar.
4. When you’re ready to bake the
madeleines, preheat the oven to
200°C, fan 180°C, gas 6.
5. Add a heaped tablespoon of
mix into each of the moulds and
bake for 10 minutes. Leave in
the mould for 2 minutes before
turning out on to a cooling rack.
Regrease and flour the mould,
then bake another half-batch;
you should get around 18
madeleines in total.
6. Dip each madeleine in the
syrup and serve with an extra
drizzle. I like to serve 2-3 per
portion in a small bowl.

MY SIGNATURE SPLATTER CAKE
INGREDIENTS
For the sponge
• 100g/4oz cocoa powder
• 1 tsp coffee granules
• 50ml/2fl oz hot water
• 450g/1lb golden caster sugar
• 450g/1lb unsalted butter,
softened
• 8 eggs
• 450g/1lb self-raising flour
• 2 tsp baking powder
• 1 tsp fine sea salt
For the buttercream
• 1 batch vanilla buttercream
(see recipe right)
For the splatters
• 200g/7oz white chocolate,
chopped
• 300ml/11fl oz double cream
• 5 different gel or paste food
colourings
1. Preheat the oven to 180°C,
fan 160°C, gas 4. Grease and
line 3 x 20cm/8in round cake
tins with baking parchment.
2. Add the cocoa powder,
coffee granules and hot water
to a small bowl and whisk to a
smooth paste.
3. Beat the sugar and butter
together until lighter in colour.
Serves 14 Takes around 1½ hours, plus cooling, chilling/freezing and setting
Next, add the eggs, one at a
time, beating well after each
addition. Add the chocolate
and coffee mix, then sift in
the flour, baking powder and
salt, and fold through.
4. Divide among the prepared
tins and bake for 40-45 minutes
or until well risen and a skewer
inserted into the centre comes
out clean. Leave to cool in the
tins for 10 minutes before
turning out on to a wire rack
to cool completely.
5. When the cakes are cool, level
them with a knife to make them
easier to stack, then slice each
cake in half horizontally to give
you 6 layers in total.
6. Spread some buttercream onto
5 of the cakes and stack them,
putting the plain layer on top.
7. Crumb-coat the cake with
more buttercream and
refrigerate for 30 minutes or
freeze for 15 minutes.
8. For the chocolate splatters,
put the chocolate in a bowl
and heat the cream in the
microwave for 1-2 minutes until
just below boiling. Pour the hot
cream over the chocolate and
leave to stand for 2 minutes,
then stir to a smooth ganache.
9. Divide the ganache among
5 bowls and colour each one
a different shade with food
colouring (go as cute and
pastel or as bold and vibrant as
you like), then allow to cool to
room temperature.
10. Frost the cake with the
remaining buttercream, giving
it a smooth, sharp finish, then
refrigerate again until the
buttercream hardens – around
20-30 minutes. This will give you
a great canvas for your artistic
splatters.
11. Now to have fun! Use
a teaspoon to flick the
coloured ganache all over the
cake (if it’s a bit thick, you can
blast it in the microwave at
10-second intervals to loosen it).
12. Let the ganache set on
the cake for 15 minutes
before serving.

California
Dreamin’
Jeff Abrams, the founder of US fashion
brand Rails, mixes pieces found on his
global travels to help create a relaxed
vibe in his beautiful Montecito estate
HOME
lthough firmly rooted in the
Southern Californian
lifestyle, Rails boasts a
refined European sensibility
that has made it a global hit.
Quickly evolving from its
trademark Hunter shirt made with Tencel – a
revolutionary super-soft fabric – the brand is
celebrating its 15th anniversary this year and
now offers a full lifestyle range.
Appropriately enough, after being named in
homage to the Interrailing that founder Jeff
Abrams did after college, Rails has a big focus
on travel. A starting point for each collection is
garments that are effortless to wear and to
pack, but also pieces that appeal to its growing
global market.
“There are not a lot of brands from
California who are really thinking of
themselves internationally,” Jeff says. “We’ve
really tried to set ourselves apart by doing that.
“I think about each market as if it’s our own
backyard. They’re cultivated on a grassroots
level. I don’t think of the UK as some far-off
location that we’re sending things out into the
ether to, and that’s hopefully why we will
continue to be successful.”
From very early in the Rails story, celebrities
have been buying the clothes: Gisele
Bündchen, Beyoncé and Kate Moss all wear the
brand and, after buying a Rails shirt, Matthew
McConaughey went on to buy ten more for his
friends. “This has been great for putting the
word out there,” says Jeff.
Celebrity families are his next target:
W
“Where the mother, children and dad all wear
it. Cindy Crawford and her family would be
good,” he says, with a smile.
Travelling around Europe – and specifically
living in Italy – not only inspired the concept of
the label, but prompted Jeff to purchase “on a
whim” El Mirador, his beautiful 19th-century
home in Montecito, California, after it made
him feel nostalgic for his time abroad.
“I discovered it online two years ago,” he
says. “I’ve always dreamt about a romantic
country retreat away from the busy LA life.
“I viewed it with no intention of actually
buying – it was more to allow my countryside
dream to last a little longer,” he adds, laughing.
“But as soon as I drove up the tree-lined
driveway and the house was revealed against the
beautiful landscape, I fell in love.
“It was almost as if I had travelled back in
time to southern France, to a house filled with
European history and classic heritage. It was an
emotional experience and I knew it was
destined to be in the next chapter of my life.”
What Jeff didn’t anticipate was what a huge
undertaking it would be. The estate has a
12,000sq ft main house with six bedrooms, a
guest house with another three bedrooms, and
a pool house with two more bedrooms, along
with the original gatehouse, which he has made
into an artists’ retreat.
Renovations include putting right the
“miscellaneous” decor. Jeff says: “I prefer a
clean palette, but with warm elements of wood
and home-style comforts. I want the house

to represent both a curated artistic
experience, but something that still
feels truly like a home. Even though
there are many heritage pieces in
the house, everything should be
lived-in and comfortable. It’s all
about blending old and new.”
Nature is a key element and the
extensive garden has natural springs
and meandering pathways. “I’ve
tried to create a flow where you are
both inside and out. There are
rooms with full sliding doors, so you
can sit inside the dining area but
with a full expanse of the gardens.
In various areas of the home there
are plants, which you can also find
around the property, including olive
trees, ficus and palms.”
One of the largest projects he’s
tackled is the flooring. “It was this
sort of pink and brown stone, which
didn’t make any sense. I went to a
quarry in France to find a specific,
clean stone and had it shipped.”
He laughs that it will not be an
Ikea home, rather a mix of furniture he’s
acquired on his European travels. “I found a
tapestry from the 1600s in Antwerp and an old
refectory table from the Italian countryside.
“One of the first pieces I found on Lillie
Road in London: a beautiful vintage lamp
featuring a great blue heron base. The
morning after I returned to the house, I was
eating breakfast looking out over the garden
and the great pond. Suddenly, from behind
the trees, descended a majestic great blue
heron, slowly landing at the edge of the water,
where he elegantly stood for two minutes as if
he were overlooking his kingdom. It was a sign
that the lamp was meant to be a prominent
feature in the house and I have kept it at the
entryway as a reminder.
“There is something magical about this
place and the stories of the families who have
passed through it are filled with fortune,
despair, love affairs and other folklore,” he
adds. “One day I’d love to make a film about
the generations that have lived at El Mirador.”
Another standout feature is the swimming
pool and, he says: “A lot of people are
planning on me having many parties! I think
this was the whole point of buying the house, it
needs to be shared with people and I’m
certainly looking forward to hosting friends
and family here. I always love it when people
feel they have experienced the magic of this
property. Summer barbecue pool parties are a
particular highlight.”
As for neighbours, there are a few famous
faces around – “including a couple of Brits”,
he jokes, thinking of the Duke and
Duchess of Sussex, who live two blocks
away. Oprah Winfrey is around the
corner and Katy Perry and Orlando
Bloom have property in Montecito,
along with Ariana Grande and Ellen
DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi.
POWERED BY HABITAT
PARTNERSHIP
F
ounded in 1964 by Terence
Conran, Habitat has helped
revolutionise interior design with
its stylish and contemporary
furniture and homeware.
And to celebrate its milestone birthday
this summer, the brand has unveiled an
exclusive collection of 60 design stories
inspired by its trendsetting past, present
and future.
Titled 60 Years of Design, the range sees
classic pieces from the Habitat archive reimagined for modern decor by the inhouse design studio, with many items in
the bold shade of Habitat 60 Blue.
Habitat has also invited celebrated
names from the creative industries –
including Sebastian Conran, Felix Conran
and Tord Boontje, plus emerging talent
including artist and designer Simone
Brewster, ceramicist Silvia Kamodyova and
furniture-maker Planq – to create limitededition products.
Highlights from the product range,
which features new takes on classics from
the 1960s to the early 2000s, include the
1970s Scoop chair, 2004’s sculptural
Ribbon light, inspired by origami, and the
chicken brick from 1964 – a ceramic oven
dish for steam cooking from Habitat’s first
year of business, now updated with a matte
black glaze.
There is also a Portobello table light in
white, lilac and blue, inspired by the Button
lamp of 1979; 1970s-style Ripple rugs in
bold navy and Prussian blue; and Bobby
floor and table lights, a nod to Habitat in
the early 2000s. Meanwhile, the Radica

“I sneaked my aunt’s copy of Lace and, even though I was

an entry point into this glamorous, rich, bitchy, fun world.

Jane Austen, Anthony Trollope,
Evelyn Waugh, the Brontë

Kevin’s latest novel, Lies and

UK. “This is the Englishcountry-manor-house book

“There’s romance and
mischief and it’s all set in luxury

feels like home to me in a way
no other city does. This book is

OVERNIGHT FAME
Kevin, 51, moved to the US with his family aged 11. After
taking a degree in media studies and working in writing and
design, he published Crazy
azy Rich Asians in 2013.
The novel was an international sensation, led to two bestselling sequels, and was made into a hit film in 2018. With
its all-Asian cast, the movie was widely seen as having helped
break down boundaries in Hollywood.
But despite its huge success – the novel has sold more
than five million copies worldwide – he was unprepared for
his new level of fame. “It exploded my life entirely,” he says.
“If I had known that was going to happen, I would have
written it under a pseudonym, because I’m an introvert. But
of course, I feel incredibly fortunate in so many ways.
“It is so much a part of me now and it has taken on a life
of its own. I feel as though the more people love the book
and the movie, the more it promotes harmony in the world.”
A movie sequel and a Broadway musical version are both
in the works, while Kevin’s 2020 book Sex and Vanity
anity is
shortly to start filming in Capri with two as-yet-unannounced
Academy Award-winning stars.
But despite his international success and home in Los
Angeles, it’s England that holds a special place in his heart.
“A lot of it is baked in. Having grown up in a former British
colony, you’re steeped in the culture from birth,” he says.
“My grandfather was knighted by the Queen; it felt almost
as though he was British. When I went to England as a child,
everything seemed familiar, like seeing Smarties in the shops.
“So many of my favourite moments have been during
holidays in England; there’s so much beauty there.”
