This makeover is gorgeous and it looks perfectly at home in your beautiful living room. Mel, editor, says I enjoyed your ideas for wooden coat racks Letters may be edited. We apologise but photos cannot be returned. (March issue) and thought I'd share ours. My husband and I sourced coat hooks from our travels - so they would bring us good memories of trips with friends. We then purchased a lovely piece of ash from a local farmer. After cutting it, we created a support for the hooks with one half and a shelf with the other. It all brings us such joy every day. Sarah-Jane Lee, Worthing Rebecca, digital editor, says: What a brilliant idea, Sarah-Jane. We've never thought of picking up coat hooks as souvenirs, but this is much more practical than fridge magnets! a bit short of furniture. I opted for a bright chalk paint as I wanted something bright in the corner of my lounge. Plus, the bright green and yellow crochet blanket is also something that's been in the family along time. My Nan knitted it and it brings lots of lovely family memories of picnics. Jo Forward, E. Sussex Tricia, creative design lead, says: What a transformation, Jo! It's wonderful that you've styled these two sentimental pieces together. Poster pel^ect I picked up a shiny wh in a chanty shop. I bought a poster and roughly tore its edges so they wouldn't show then, stuck it on the front of the chest with PVA. I had a bit of trouble getting it into the bevels! I painted it with Frenchic paint and pulled the green out, past the torn edges and they don't show at all. Jill Kelly, Lowestoft Beth, creative designer, says: This is such a Romantic make, Jill. You're so clever to have thought of ripping the edges to stop the design looking 'stuck on'. I'll be copying this technique myself! Your Home, Our Media, Eagle House, Bristol BS1 4ST. HOUSEHOLD Freshen up your home with our handy tips and tricks HOW TO... Celebrate World Water Day on 22nd March by changing the way you use and consume water in your home. Here are our top tips... • Update your shower head and cut your shower time down by 5 minutes. According to waterwise.org. uk, baths and showers account for the highest water consumption in the home, at around 34%. Generally speaking, a shower with an efficient shower head uses less water than a full bath, but be aware that long showers or power showers often use more! • Check for a leaky loo, which can waste between 200 and 400 litres of water per day! Installing a dual- flush toilet will save water by using a less powerful flush, while a Cistern Displacement Device (CDD) placed in the cistern will displace around 1 litre of water with every flush. CDDs are easy to install, free from most water companies, and can save up to 5,000 litres of water per year. • Turn off taps when not in use, for instance when brushing your teeth, as a running tap can waste around 6 litres of water per minute! Dripping taps are another culprit - usually they are easily fixed with a new washer, which could save around 5,500 litres of water a year. • Save leftover cooking water and give it a second use in the kitchen or garden. If you used it to boil veggies, it'll be rich in vitamins, so let it cool before turning it into soup, using it to thin sauces, or pouring it into a watering can to water indoor or outdoor plants - as long as it doesn't contain salt! Read your washing machine and dishwasher manuals to see which cycles are the most water- efficient - look for 'Eco' or 'Economy' settings. Always make sure your appliance is full before turning it on, and avoid pre-rinsing your dishes or clothes, as this is usually unnecessary with powerful modern machines. ^FlNU OUT MORT... HOUSEHOLD HINTS WE TEST. J-fMvn THINGS WE CONSIDERED: What does it smell like? How easy is it to use? Does it leave residue? Specialist floor cleaner in Lavender Blossom, £3 for 1L, Astonish Using this floor cleaner was simple - the cap was easy to undo yet secure, and the dilution measurements are clearly written. The lavender blossom scent was fresh and not clinical - it smelt like spring had been brought in. However, the fragrance is subtle, so more product is needed if you want a long lasting effect. It dried very quickly, leaving no residue. It even got rid of a slippery area, where a shoe cleaner had been sprayed. Overall, an effective product, especially for the price, but if you prefer a stronger scent, you may get through this bottle quite quickly. Floor cleaner in Nutty Almond, from £3.45 for 750ml, Minimi This eco-friendly, refillable cleaner has a honey-like consistency and its super concentrated formula means it's brilliant value. This did make it a little tricky to measure though, as you need to keep an eye on it as it gloops into the cap. I also had to wash the cap, before putting it back on the bottle. This cleaner has a very subtle smell, a little like baby powder, which was almost undetectable after it was diluted. It cleaned a textured vinyl bathroom floor really well, removing stains that had been untouched by previous cleaning. It also left a shower tray streak- free and sparkling. The Pink Stuff all purpose floor cleaner, £1.19 for 1L, The Range This bright pink bottle would be hard to miss in a cleaning caddy, and it was suitably scented, too. It smelt ever-so-slightly chemically but not unpleasantly so - a subtle smell of rhubarb which didn't linger. The cleaner was easy to use, and the instructions were clear: simply dilute 2 capfuls in 5 litres of water. It produced a bubbly solution, cleaned the floor well and cut through grime. However, it did leave cloudy marks behind when used on very glossy floor tiles. It's a vegan formula, and can also be used neat on sinks, cooker tops and sanitaryware. Concentrated floor cleaner, £3.85 for 750ml, Bio-D Eco-friendly cleaning products can be a pricier option, but this concentrated floor cleaner is great value - a little goes a long way, with 10ml recommended per 5 litres of water, so the 750ml bottle will last you. As its formula is plant-based and non-toxic, and the bottle is made from 100% recycled material, it ticks a lot of planet-friendly boxes and its cleaning power is as good as its eco credentials. It has a subtle scent (great if you're not a fan of overly perfumed cleaners), made easy work of tackling any greasy spots, and after rinsing there was no sticky residue leftover. No room under the sink? This space-saving design is a game changer. Shake out the drips then fold it down after use for easy, no-fuss storage Collapsible bucket, £4, Dunelm Keep mops in check by hanging them by the handle in one of these grippers. Installation is simple, with no need for nails or screws Command self-adhesive broom gripper, £7.30, Wickes This clever mop has an integrated wringing mechanism to allow you to clean your floors without soaking them. (fea^rcd^ DIY can often lead to accidents, from spilled paint pots to dried-on wallpaper paste. Make sure the paint and paste stays on the walls with these top tips for dealing with stains! • For wet paint spills, scoop up as much of the paint as you can with a spoon and pop it back in the pot; for dried paint, scrape it away with a stiff brush or a utility knife. If the paint is water-based, loosen up the stain with a damp cloth, then add some laundry detergent to your cloth and pat the area again, blotting as many times as needed to remove the paint. Oil-based paint will require blotting with paint thinners (if wet) or acetone (if dried), then mix some detergent with cold water and use it with a sponge to blot the area again. Vacuum the carpet once dried. • Remove wallpaper paste stains, while they're still wet. Soak up any excess paste with a dry cloth, dabbing carefully - never rub. Then use a damp cloth to soak up any remaining paste. Dried paste needs to be re-moistened and loosened with a bit of water first, before dabbing gently as before. • Tile grout can quickly harden and become difficult to remove if you get it on clothes or carpet, and will stain if left for too long. Remove as much as possible with a dry, stiff brush. Then treat the stain with three parts distilled white vinegar mixed with one part water. Rinse with plenty of clean water. CONSUMER NEWS Every month we bring you the latest consumer news stories with ideas and advice on everything from saving money to improving your home HELP WITH home improvements There is financial support out there, so check if you're eligible If you are on a low income, there are grants available to make home improvements and buy white goods. Use online grants checkers, like turn2us.org.uk or lightningreach.org, which match your info to any grants that you can apply for. Find your nearest charity or furniture project offering secondhand appliances, furniture and IT equipment at reuse-network.org.uk and there's lots on offer at freecycle.org and ilovefreegle.org. There's also help with home improvements for low income, disabled or elderly households through your local Home Improvement Agency via foundations.uk.com. They can assist with decorating, DIY or building flat-pack furniture. SPRING CLEAN YOUR FINANCES Ayesha Ofori, founder of Propelle, specialists in women building long-term wealth, has these top tips • Tackle your finances head on Don't bury your head in the sand. Allocate time to sit down and look at your bank accounts, spending, saving and investing. Make sure you know what's coming in and what's going out. • Cancel unnecessary direct debits Prioritise what you spend your money on and get rid of anything you don't need. • Have a spring clean to make some money Take action with those unwanted gifts Didyou kncrw? According to Fair Fix, recent research shows that a new boiler could see you secure a buyer more quickly if you're thinking к of selling up, as well as . V achieve a higher price Л for your home. sitting in a drawer, or clothes you've not worn for ages by selling on Vinted or Depop. • Start investing (if you haven't already) People think you need lots of money to start investing but you don't - you can start with just £1. Get into the mindset of investing rather than just saving and spending. There's a concept in investing called compounding, which means that a small amount of money invested over time can grow into really sizeable amounts, but you have to start to begin with. HOW TO SPOT AN EBAY BARGAIN There are a few tricks you can try to scour for great deals. Misspelt entries get fewer bids, while many auctions with 99p starting prices also go unspotted. Set up alerts on your favourite items and search for local sellers offering in-person pick-ups, as these often get fewer bids. You can also find out if somethings cheaper on eBay with the free eBay app that allows you to take a photo of an item before the app searches for matching products so you can compare the cost. CONSUMER NEWS CORAL FOCUS ON Cut the cost of home renovation projects with these savvy ways to save HOW TO... lucTvfZj <Ж cftzzT plrc^ect^ When your home needs an update but you don't have cash to splash, there are plenty of ways to save and still get a room refresh... • Where possible, recycle or upcycle old or tired furniture. See if you already have items that could be given a fresh new look or search on Freecycle and Gumtree as well as local Facebook groups. You should be able to source some decent homewares and if you're handy with a sewing machine and paintbrush, you can give things a new lease of life in no time. Is it really worth spending on good quality paint? If you can afford to, buying better quality paint may save you money in the long run, as well as giving a much better finish. Cheap paint may cost less but it's likely that you'll have to apply many coats, which adds up. A good quality paint should require fewer coats, which means less paint and less cost. It will also look far better, especially in different lights at different times of the day. What can I do with offcuts of wallpaper? If you have any wallpaper left over from a project or you find some tucked away in the garage, there are so many things you can do with it. You can frame swatches and hang on the wall for instant wall art. You can wallpaper the panels on a wardrobe or dresser. You can line drawers or the back of shelves or apply to step risers on the stairs. Just make sure you apply a coat of varnish afterwards to keep it looking good for longer. Do I need an electrician to change light switches? If your home has bland white light switches or sockets, you can give your whole interior a smart new look with brass, bronze, chrome, stainless steel or matt black versions instead. As this involves working with electricity, you will need a Part P qualified electrician for this job to ensure it is completed safely and signed off. • You can update old furniture with paint, varnish, wallpaper or stencilling and there are plenty of how-to guides online to get you started. • If you do need new, plan ahead and shop in the sales. It's worth waiting as you can save £££s so check when your favourite stores are having their sales. rcORAEF YourHomes zi ULTIMATE GUIDEf/TO. Master the art of truly bespoke decorating and get colour confident for good with our expert tips and tricks Bedroom looking dingy? Living room too bright to relax in? We've all been there. Over the next few pages, we're going to explore how to use colour inside your home, unlocking the secrets that will help you bring out the very best in your spaces, whichever direction they face! You may have heard that you should use different tones in west-facing rooms to east- facing ones, but why? Well, here's the science bit! Picture Earth from space, spinning on its axis through the day. As the planet turns, the light from the sun lands differently across its surface - from softly blue in the morning to golden yellow in the evening. Once you can picture this, and you'll understand why finding the perfect white for a north-facing room can be so tricky. But that's enough physics! There are some simple rules to follow. Let's get stuck in! CU Feature Hannah Tribe Decorating Special 2024 \burHome 29
STYLE FILE Embrace the gentle morning light to use the space. East-facing bedrooms are ideal if you struggle to get out of bed in the mornings as they'll brighten as the sun rises J* Г» z i i.it'r* with soft, warm shades East-facing rooms are filled with light in the morning, which slowly fades throughout the day. Morning light is slightly cool in tone, ’ TIP! AVOID PALE GREYS IN THESE SPACES, THEY CAN FEEL DULL IN THE MUTED AFTERNOON LIGHT Л If you don't J 4* know which direction ' r your room faces, see if you have a compass app on your phone - many of them come with one pre-loaded. Stand in front of your window and hold your phone flat. The arrow which points straight out of the window will tell you which direction your room faces Sunny in morning, shaded in evening with a green or blue tint. These tints aren't as strong as in north-facing rooms (see p36), so you won't need to try so hard to warm up east-facing spaces, but it's something to bear in mind when choosing your palette. Pale and pastel tones with red or yellow undertones tend to work best in these rooms as they'll even out the cooler notes in the light. Most manufacturers will explain the undertones of each paint in the product description. When choosing your colours, begin by thinking about what time of day you're going but this means that strong yellow hues in these rooms can feel too strong. Opt for warm blues and greens, or beige-tinted whites instead. These colours will feel light and airy in the mornings and restful in the evening. An east-facing room is a brilliant space for cosy living room. It will be shaded in the evening, creating a relaxed atmosphere which helps to make your lighting choices pop. Look for light beige and cream tones to use in these rooms, with a touch of coral or red to add warmth to the indirect evening light. 30 YxirHome yourhomestyle.uk

STYLE FILE TIP! CHOOSE PAINT AND FURNISHINGS WITH UV PROTECTION TO AVOID FADING OVERTIME South facing Tone down the intense light in these sunny rooms with cool colours Most of the sun, most of the time If your space is sunny at midday, congratulations! You have a south-facing room. These rooms are arguably the easiest to decorate as you don't have to do much to make them feel bright and airy. However, that doesn't mean that they can handle everything. South-facing rooms can receive very strong light for extended periods of the day, which makes some shades feel too fierce. Decorate these sunny spaces using cool shades with slightly grey undertones. These undertones will be balanced out by the sunlight, so they won't feel dingy. Instead, the cool notes help to dampen down reflections and will make sure your space feels calm, even at midday. When choosing your colours, bear in mind that the light in these rooms will have a slight yellow tint, which makes colours seem more yellow. Balance out this effect by aiming for colours that look a little bluer than you'd like, and you'll avoid disappointment when you bring them into your space. South-facing rooms make great kitchens and living rooms. They're warm, welcoming and full of life. In order to enjoy the sunlight that streams into these spaces at all times of the day, avoid colours which will make the room feel too 'hot', like reds and yellows. 32 \burHome yourhomestyle.uk

LIVING ROOM MAKEOVER ‘A bargain bookcase hack made all the difference’ Wanting a bespoke look without the price tag, Salma and Stuart Chatto DIYed their own built-in cabinetry, giving their space a playful, individual feel WHO LIVES HERE? Salma Chatto, 33, a web designer and content creator @chateauchatto, my husband Stuart, 38, a civil engineer, and our children Taliah, four, and Ilyas, one, plus our two cats, Indie and Lexie. We live in a four-bedroom house in Billingham, Stockton-on-Tees, which we bought in March 2021. WHAT WAS UPDATED? Our living room was outdated and bland, with magnolia walls and laminate flooring. We gave it a full makeover, doing all the work ourselves, adding lots of storage and personality. WHY THE CHANGE? We wanted it to be a room that felt cosy, and somewhere we wanted to relax. HOW LONG DID IT TAKE? As we could only work around our jobs and looking after Taliah, who was one at the time, the project took six weeks. Looking to move from their small three-bedroom terrace, Salma and Stuart Chatto jumped at the chance to buy a bigger home for their growing family. ‘This house had everything we were after,’ says Salma. ‘It had so much more space than where we were previously, with four double bedrooms, two reception rooms, a downstairs office, bags of storage and a huge garden. It was so reasonably priced, we couldn’t believe our luck.’ The house had been built in the 1990s and, although in good condition, was incredibly dated. Having stretched themselves financially, though, the couple had to take on all the work, renovating one room at a time when money allowed, with the living room at the top of their priority list. THE PROJECT The room lacked personality, but had great proportions and natural light. ‘We knew with some clever ideas and a lick of paint, it would look amazing,’ smiles Salma. ‘Bespoke, built-in cabinetry was also a must-have for us.’ 42 YxirHome yourhomestyle.uk

Feature and styling Marisha Taylor Photos James French The couple envisaged cabinets along one wall, either side of the fireplace and television, with cupboard space and shelves for their books and ornaments. ‘We also wanted panelling on the walls to frame our artwork and tie in with the cornicing and ceiling rose details,’ says Salma. ‘A big, comfy sofa was on the list too, and we wanted to make the bay window a spot to relax in with an oversized love seat.’ Salma studied art and graphic design, so wanted to flex her creativity. T adore colour and pattern, so adding bold tones and fun elements was a key part of our vision,’ she says. WHAT WE DID The walls and ceiling were prepped and painted in a soft white with a hint of grey. ‘We’d decided to paint the cabinetry in a punchy colour so wanted to keep the walls neutral to balance this out,’ explains Salma. ‘We measured, cut, and fitted mouldings to create the picture panels, plus a dado rail to add character, and laid the flooring as well.’ When it came to the ‘showstopping’ cabinetry, the couple considered getting a carpenter to do the work, but after being Decorating Special 2024 WirHome 43

'It started with the handles on the cabinets then I found myself buying light fittings and accessories to add accents throughout the space' quoted over £2,000, took it on themselves. ‘I’d seen an amazing hack on Instagram using IKEA Billy bookcases that looked like the bespoke cabinetry we’d been quoted for,’ says Salma. ‘It took Stuart some convincing, but The chest provides hidden storage and doubles up as a table. 'This is a pretty spot in the room, with a hanging plant and picture panels filled with art,’ says Salma after more research he rose to the challenge!’ They measured the space, working around the wall lights and fireplace, and ordered the components from IKEA ready to paint before assembly. ‘After trying out many different colours, we chose a pretty pink with purple undertones,’ Salma says. They prepped and painted the pieces, and Stuart built the sections and bolted them together. ‘We added the scallop trim, the wood detail, a wood counter and the skirting board, which was key to the seamless built-in look we had our hearts set on,’ Salma explains. HIGHS & LOWS While they’re happy with the end result, achieving a built-in look with IKEA bookcases proved to be tricky. ‘It took us a while to work out how to fit the bookcases and cabinets into the space so there were no gaps either side and the smaller units looked central under the wall lights,’ says Salma. ‘We scratched our heads for a while and did think about making our own cabinetry but, considering how busy our lives were, that would have been impossible. Thankfully, apart from ordering the wrong depth of bookcases for the left side of the fireplace, we somehow worked it out.’ THE FINAL DETAILS Painting the walls in a fresh white gave Salma scope for styling with colour. Rather than a matching suite, she paired a teal corner sofa with a yellow armchair and footstool, adding mustard cushions to tie them together. Warm brass and gold fixtures and fittings are dotted throughout the scheme, from door handles and lighting to a sunburst mirror. ‘We’ve created a completely unique space, and as we’ve done all the work ourselves, it feels even more special. LIVING ROOM MAKEOVER Scalloped shelving Pretty up a plain shelving unit, like Salma, with a scalloped trim for a bespoke look On a piece of paper, draw a circle with a 12cm diameter. Cut out the circle, then cut the circle in half to create a semi- circular template. Using a jigsaw, cut a sheet of MDF to the same width as the top of the cabinet you wish to trim and approximately 20cm high. Draw a horizontal line 13cm up from the bottom long edge of the MDF so it's parallel with this edge. Working from the centre of ‘ the length of MDF outwards, place the paper template on top of the pencil line and draw around it. Repeat this all the way along the line to create a continuous scallop design. Clamp your sheet of MDF firmly to a workbench, then slowly and carefully cut out the scallop trim using a jigsaw. Once you've cut out the whole length of scallop trim, sand any rough edges smooth using sandpaper. Paint the scallop trim on both sides to match your cupboard and allow the paint to dry thoroughly. Attach the trim to the top of your cupboard using screws or grab adhesive, painting over any screw heads to hide them if necessary. ’DIFFICULTY LEVEL Termediate 46 VburHome yourhomestyle.uk

REAL HOME Sunny seaside terrace ‘We’ve got every detail exactly how we want it’ Having always wanted to live by the coast, Jessica Collins took on a project property in Hove and did a top-to-bottom overhaul, filling it with happy hues and clever design ideas Jessica Collins and her husband Oliver had been considering making the move out of London for a while. ‘I’ve always wanted to live by the sea, as I find it calming and it resets me,’ explains Jessica, ‘and our daughter starting school spurred us to leave our London home and discover a new life in Hove.’ The couple were initially planning on renting to ensure the move was right for them, but, Jessica explains, ‘rental properties were either far too expensive or horrible and, with two small children, I really wanted somewhere that we could make feel like home.’ By chance, while visiting friends in the area, Jessica spotted this place for sale and was told the estate agent was showing people ▼ It was love at first sight when Jessica and her husband saw this house - they only needed a few minutes at the property to know it was for them 62 VxirHome yourhomestyle.uk

As I love to cook, it was the starting point for the kitchen design,' says Jessica Jessica opted for shelves 1 instead of cabinets to maxmise the space in the kitchen. I share our reno journey on Instagram @ren.hove.ation. OUR HOME IS a four-bedroom Victorian terrace in Hove, East Sussex and we moved here in March 2021. MY FAVOURITE ROOM is the open- plan kitchen-dining area. We designed it to create a space that allowed for cooking, dining, and living in a way that would work for all of us. So, after a three-minute viewing, the couple decided to put an offer in. ‘We already knew this was a lovely area to live in, especially for young families, and the house ticked a lot of boxes as it was under budget and had the potential to become the beautiful family home we were searching for.’ BLANK CANVAS The house was bland and beige when the family first moved in, and it had been cheaply and badly updated along the way. This suited Jessica and Oliver, though, as they’d done a reno before and weren’t daunted by starting from scratch. ‘However, the dimensions were different to our previous house and a lot of our furnishings didn’t fit, particularly in the alcoves,’ says Jessica, ‘so I spent the first few weeks selling furniture on Facebook Marketplace and trying to find suitable replacements. Having one building company do all the work meant the couple could negotiate a good deal, but it had its drawbacks too. ‘It was really tough living with building work in almost every room, particularly with two small children,’Jessica says. ‘We did move out for the first six weeks, but it was the height Decorating Special 2024 YnirHome 65
REAL HOME of summer and all the Airbnbs were really expensive, so as soon as we had a working bathroom, we moved back in.’ Jessica came up with several layout options for the new extension to find the right one, as she loves to cook, so getting the kitchen area spot-on was really important. ‘But I initially struggled to get the design to also include the needs of the children,’ she says, ‘as I wanted to be able to see them and give them space to play without them actually running through the kitchen area while I was cooking. I hadn’t initially considered putting the kitchen in the old part of the room as I assumed we would use this as a cosy snug, but seeing this layout in our neighbours’ house inspired me to re-think my ideas.’ MAIN BEDROOM 'I wanted to recreate the feeling of being on holiday so chose shutters and striped cushions, with their nod to deckchairs, to add those little hints,' says Jessica, 'and I added a luxe element with the sofa. So, after nearly 20 years together, we began to look for our forever home. As Elliot had moved in with his girlfriend, we didn’t need a big house, and I immediately fell in love with this place the moment we stepped through the door,’ says Lisa. ‘I loved the large box bay window in the living room, but I particularly loved the stairs and original floor tiles in the hall, which reminded me of my first home when I was 21.’ SEEING THE POTENTIAL The couple had to look past the old-fashioned decor, though. ‘An elderly woman had lived here for decades and hadn’t done any updates, so there was floral wallpaper everywhere, even on the ceilings. 'The living room is quite small so I struggled to find furniture to fit, but managed to source the elegant wooden cabinet in the alcove from Homary' When they got stuck in to stripping the wallpaper on day one, they realised how wet the walls actually were, and also discovered damp in the floorboards, which they were advised to replace. ‘Also, due to Covid disruptions, prices for materials were going up weekly, we had to wait ages for everything to arrive, and trying to find trades to come and do the work was difficult, so we decided to do as much work ourselves as possible,’ says Lisa. The couple took the ceilings down and stripped the walls back to brick, then got someone in to re-lay the floors and plaster the walls. ‘We then reinstated the coving and picture rail in the living room, and replaced the old-fashioned gas fireplace with a log burner and an original Victorian black fireplace more in keeping with the look of the house.’ REPLACE FOR SPACE Looking to boost the existing space, the couple initially planned to extend the back of the house, ‘but a surveyor came to look at the project and gave us some really good advice, making us question whether we actually need more space with two of us here,’ says Lisa. ‘So, we decided to keep the layout as it was, turn what was the dining and living room into an open-plan kitchen-diner, and convert the old kitchen on the side of the house into a utility with downstairs WC. We were glad we took that call after finding how much work and money the rest of the house needed.’ So, instead, they took the chimney breast out, where the sink is now, and ripped out the old kitchen, which was damp and rotten. ‘We also installed stylish French doors and we had new windows fitted throughout the whole house.’ When it came to the layout of the new kitchen, Lisa already had one in mind, which made it easier. ‘Designing the Decorating Special 2024 ^burHome 77

Turn each of the six sections into triangles by using a ruler to draw a straight line under the curved part of each section, connecting it to the other two straight lines to form a triangle. Repeat this process six times to form a hexagon. 3llse a jigsaw to cut out the hexagon, then sand the edges smooth. Wipe away any dust from the surface of the hexagon. 4Lay a sheet of marble-effect self-adhesive vinyl, paper side up, on your worksurface and place the hexagon on top. Draw around the hexagon with a pencil, then draw another line all the way around, 5cm further out than the first pencil line. Cut around this outer line with a craft knife. 5Remove the paper backing and carefully smooth the vinyl over the front surface of the hexagon. Use an old credit card to smooth out any air bubbles as you apply the vinyl. Make small slits in the vinyl at each corner to help ease it neatly around the edges, then smooth the ends in place on the reverse side of the hexagon to create your marble- effect tabletop. 6With the tabletop right side down, place the hairpin legs in your desired position and use a pencil to mark where the pilot holes for the screws need to be. REAL HOME Personalitv-filled reno ‘Every room is now a riot of colour and pattern’ Seeing the potential to add artistic flair to a blank canvas, Tarah Ferguson and Scott Underwood made this house their own with daring prints and bold shades When Tarah and Scott met on a rollercoaster ride in Las Vegas seven years ago, he already owned this house. Originally from Vancouver in Canada, and having previously lived in London, Tarah moved in with Scott three years ago, and she’s been putting her own spin on the place ever since. ‘I first saw the house a few months into our relationship, and I could see that it had loads of potential for bringing in pattern and colour,’ she says. ‘When I first moved to the UK in 2019, my focus was doing up my flat in London, as that was where Scott and I spent the majority of our time together. However, when lockdown happened, I made the decision to move to Salisbury full time.’ A FAMILY AFFAIR This was a perfect opportunity for Tarah to pick up a paintbrush and start getting creative. ‘I wanted to make the living room a little cosier, so we both agreed on Hague Blue from Farrow Sc Ball, leaving the patio door wall white as a compromise,’ says Tarah. ‘After that, we moved on to the hallway. I painted the pattern on the wall inspired by an abstract design I had fallen in love with.’ ▲ The bold blue door is the only hint from this unassuming, surburban Salisbury home of the dramatic interior that awaits inside 82 VxirHome yourhomestyle.uk

She painted the shelves the same as the cabinets to give them a seamless, built-in look 4 The couple installed banquettes in the dining nook to maximise seating space, and added deep seat pads to make it feel comfy and relaxed. 'Not only does this nook serve as the family gathering place for all meals, it is also a homework hub, art studio, and where we entertain friends and family when they stop by,' says Tarah ordered and covered the foam in the different types of fabric. Once that was in place, we needed to tackle the rest of the space.’ The kitchen was a great opportunity for Tarah to illustrate to Scott what could be done on a budget, for minimum spend, maximum impact. ‘When we first looked at updating the kitchen with new units, worktops and appliances, quotes were coming in between £15,000 and £20,000, so we decided to paint the existing units and add new handles,’ explains Tarah. ‘Scott chose the colour of the units, then I chose the tiles and the worktop. ITo make the upholstered seat, first measure the top of your bench. Draw out these measurements onto a sheet of MDF, then draw another line all the way around, 5cm further out than the first pencil line. Using this outer line as a guide, use a jigsaw to cut your sheet of MDF to size. Sand the edges smooth. 2 Cut a piece of upholstery foam to the same size as this cut piece of MDF. Spray the top of the MDF sheet with upholstery adhesive and position the foam on top, making sure all the edges marry up neatly. 3Lay the fabric right side facing down on the floor, making sure it is 15cm larger all the way round than the cut piece of MDF. Place the MDF board on top with the foam side down. Working from the first long edge, carefully pull the edge of the fabric taut over the MDF board. Staple it into position as you work, making sure to keep it taut and wrinkle free. Repeat for the opposite long edge, then the two shorter edges, folding the corners neatly. Once you're happy with the tautness and neatness of the upholstery, carefully trim away any excess fabric. 4With the MDF side of the seat pad facing up, place the bench seat on top and screw through from the underside of the bench at each corner and in the centre to attach it to the MDF. Drill pilot holes first to make this job easier. 5To make the upholstered backrest, draw three 40cm-high arch shapes next to each other onto a sheet of MDF, making sure their overall length matches that of the bench seat. Cut out the back piece using a jigsaw, then repeat steps 2-3 to upholster it. 6Attach the back piece to the wall using wall mounting headboard brackets, ensuring you place it centrally over where you want to position the bench. л —1^^- I I wanted to create a colourful yet functional seating area, with space for storage underneath^ 90 MxirHome yourhomestyle.uk

Perhaps a previous owner thought it a good idea to rip out the original Victorian or Edwardian fireplaces and picture rails - believe it or not, this was a trend in the 1960s and 1970s - or maybe you live in a modern or brand-new house that was devoid of personality to start with. Here’s our how-to guide to help you go about restoring or adding character, no matter the age of your home or your decorating budget. I Put up panelling on the walls Timber or MDF panelling can lend a traditional feel to interiors along with depth and texture, creating shadows as the light hits it. Narrow, beaded panelling is best for a period room, and Shaker-style panels suit both contemporary and older homes. Panelling is quick to fit, inexpensive and comes in many lengths and widths. Nail or glue them directly onto the wall once they have been cut to size. A single feature wall panelled from floor to ceiling adds impact in a small space, or choose to panel the area below a dado rail and paint the top half in a contrasting shade. You can also create a cosy, cottage-style ambience with tongue-and-groove panelling that has the added bonus of covering marks and other imperfections. 94 VburHome yourhomestyle.uk

As well as providing visual interest, their purpose was originally very practical - coving covered the join between the wall and ceiling; dado rails prevented scuff damage from chairs and other furniture; and ceiling roses were fitted to hide ugly wiring. Mouldings were traditionally cast in plaster, a material that's heavy, pricey and potentially tricky to fit. Hardened polyurethane, polystyrene and softwood - the latter typically used for skirting and architraves - are lightweight, less costly options that you can simply nail on the wall. Break up the space by fitting a dado or picture rail and decorating the two sections of wall in different colours. Focus on fireplaces It's worth investigating whether a bare chimney breast was boarded up to cover a fireplace behind - a hollow sound when knocking will alert you to the position of the opening. Plasterboard can be removed with a hammer and chisel, but ask a builder to tackle a bricked-up fireplace or widen an existing opening. Depending on what's revealed, you may be able to restore an original fireplace and surround, or replace it with reclaimed or reproduction models. You must get the chimney inspected and cleaned if you plan to use it. New homes rarely have flues, but a prefabricated flue fitted in a faux chimney breast or vented to an outside wall will allow you to have a gas fire or log burner. The simplest solution is a realistic electric fire or stove, which only requires a plug socket. Emphasize architectural details Show off architectural elements with clever use of paint. Colour is your friend here - try a dark shade on the window frames, architraves and skirting and to highlight the inside of an archway, for example where an internal wall's been removed to open up two rooms into one. Draw attention to a picture rail - and the room's height - by painting the area above it and the ceiling white, or add horizontal bands of colour just below the coving. In a home that's not blessed with period details, create the illusion of a dado or picture rail with a dark hue on the lower part of the wall and a paler one at the top. Fake the appearance of panelling with wallpaper, and you can even fashion a faux dado from replica tiles. Feature Andrea Dean Decorating Special 2024 YxirHome 95

In a new build it can be particularly underwhelming recessed LED downlights are fine for kitchens and bathrooms but can make what should be a cosy living space feel a bit like an office. Switching out basic fixtures for statement fittings gives your space the all-important wow factor. Light fittings act as the jewellery of your room and as should not only provide great illumination, but also к look fabulous/ r Rebecca Pagan, commercial director at Pagazzi Lighting Layer the lighting The most effective lighting schemes are made up of layers of light from several sources, which are combined as required to suit the room's function and mood. The first layer is background or ambient lighting, and you'll need task lighting to illuminate an area you're working or relaxing in - perhaps a desk or chair when reading - plus accent lighting to accentuate attractive details. Choose fittings in keeping with your home's age or the style you're recreating. For example, in a living room a central chandelier works well teamed with fixed and portable lamps for reading along with wall lights that sweep light up or down to highlight a fireplace, piasterwork or a favourite painting. Hang pendants above a dining table and kitchen island, ensuring they're carefully positioned to avoid glare. Fit the right flooring Wood is timeless, sustainable and very durable, so if you're lucky enough to uncover original timber floorboards in your home, restore them to their former glory by sanding and sealing after filling any gaps. Otherwise, invest in a new solid or engineered wood floor in an antique-effect parquet or plank design, or, if your budget doesn't stretch that far, go for laminate or luxury vinyl tiles that look just like timber. Period-style patterned porcelain and ceramic tiles are ideal for halls, kitchens and bathrooms, as is natural stone, and fit neutral flatweave carpets for a touch of warmth in bedrooms. You won't want to replace freshly-laid floors in a new-build, so disguise them with vintage-inspired rugs if they're not to your taste. Focus on windows It's hard to love your windows when the originals have been swapped for tilt and turns that jar with your home's design, or if you're stuck with new ones that it doesn't make sense to change. However, you can dress them so that you barely notice they're not the sashes or casements you'd crave if money was no object. Fit sheer Roman blinds to conceal unsightly frames without restricting daylight, and soften with full length curtains. Adjustable slatted shutters are another option and once fitted, need nothing more than an occasional wipe. Restoring or replacing stained glass is very expensive but get the look for a fraction of the cost with made-to-measure window film that you can apply yourself. Plain and patterned frosted glass is available too. 96 \burHome yourhomestyle.uk

Most brands offer a range of flat matt heritage paints in saturated tones - a good starting point when stuck for inspiration. Alternatively, florals, botanicals or other richly-patterned wallpapers are perfect for setting the scene - small scale prints suit most rooms, whereas large repeats are particularly effective on wide expanses of wall. Arrange cushions and throws in coordinating fabrics on sofas and beds, and display curated collections of glassware, pottery and other knick-knacks. HOW TO SHOP FOR RECLAIMED PIECES • Reclamation is big business and you'll be able to source everything from salvaged building materials to period floors, fireplaces and doors. Start by measuring the space where what you're after needs to fit, and research prices, factoring in the cost of delivery - and restoration if relevant - as well as installation. • Buying secondhand doesn't mean you'll be getting a bargain, as old bricks and timber flooring, for example, can be more expensive than their brand new equivalents. Ask about guarantees and returns policies and check items thoroughly for damage. Find out where they came from, and whether radiators, baths and light fittings have been refurbished or if work's required. • Facebook Marketplace and eBay are generally the cheapest but least reliable sources and you might have to buy sight unseen if the seller's some distance away. Visit antiques warehouses, fairs and markets, and reclamation or architectural salvage yards which are located across the country. Browse listings and search for general and specialist dealers at salvoweb.com. For peace of mind, buy from those signed up to the Salvo Code as this indicates good practice and reliable provenance. If you can't find what you're looking for, the dealer may be able to track it down. ▲ Recently-expanded Aspal Antiques in Suffolk is a treasure trove for all sorts of vintage finds Decorating Special 2024 \burHome 97
BUYER'S GUIDE 1 Choose the right decorating, iooti ^or theJob Arm yourself with the proper kit to get the best results for your next painting or papering project If you’re about to embark on a spot of decorating this spring, you need to kit yourself out with the right tools, not only to carry out the job, but also to prep the area beforehand, to ensure you achieve a perfect finish. Whether you need to remove old wallpaper, strip paint from your woodwork or get tooled up to paint and paper your walls, read on to discover the best tools for the job, no matter what your budget, ▼ Fortress trade 9-inch pro big roller and brush 20-piece set, £27.99, Screwfix IcbRAblW U&tti t&prep a Nick Parsons, UK test painter for Harris Brushes, has these prep tips: 'When it comes to painting your walls, preparation is key. Remove furniture and protect the floor with a dust sheet. Next, inspect old paintwork and lightly rub over any imperfections with an appropriate grade sandpaper or sanding block - remember to wear a PPE mask to protect yourself from dust. If removing wallpaper, thoroughly wipe the wall with sugar soap to remove any paste residue if repainting. 'Repair cracks and holes by firstly cleaning the surface with sugar soap to remove any dust then, using a filling knife, push filler into the gaps until smooth and finally sand with a fine sandpaper. Mask off areas such as skirting boards, doorframes, light sockets, and window sills. 'For precise painting, use a blade brush to cut in - Harris' Ultimate Blade Brush has a very fine wide tip - aiming for a 5-1 Ocm painted area around the edges. By following these steps, you can ensure that your walls are properly prepped for painting, resulting in a professional and long-lasting finish.' SANDERS When it comes to removing paint or varnish from woodwork, an electric sander will save you a lot of time and effort. For sanding large flat areas, a sheet, belt or random orbital sander will make light work of the task. However, if you're sanding fiddly areas, such as architraves or stair spindles, then a detail sander will allow you to get into small, awkward spaces. Expect to pay anything from £25 up to £700 for an electric sander depending on its spec. If you want the control to work slowly on certain projects, opt for a sander with adjustable speeds or choose a manual hand sander. Hand sanders obviously require more effort than electric ones, but they only cost around £15 and are much sturdier than cheap foam sanding blocks. First-time decorators should try this handy kit. STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE revamp repair tecgcte Give an old freestanding enamel bath a glamorous metallic makeover using this clever copper-leafing technique One way of getting the luxurious look of a real copper bath is to cover the outside of an enamel bath in copper leaf Copper is a very warm and rich, gingery red colour and, as it’s a shiny metal, emits light. To soften its appearance, something cool and deep is needed underneath, to show through. Here, Annie Sloan has used chalk paint in Florence - a coppery green colour, similar to verdigris, like the Statue of Liberty. SHOPPING LIST Annie Sloan chalk paint in Florence medium oval brush ✓ water-based gold size ✓ flat synthetic brush, to apply the gold size ✓ sheets of copper leaf ✓ talcum powder (optional) ✓ dry, firm but soft-haired brush, to push down the copper leaf V clear wax ✓ soft, clean, dry, lint-free cloth, to apply the wax 1 Paint the outside of the bath in the Florence chalk paint with the medium oval brush. When it is dry, paint over it with gold size, using the flat synthetic brush. 2 While the size is becoming clear, take a sheet of copper leaf and lightly crumple it in your hands. If you find the leaf sticks to your hands, put a light covering of talcum powder on them. Gently flatten out the leaf. 3Lay the flattened sheet of leaf on the sticky size - don't do this until the size is completely clear with no white areas. I like to lay the leaf on with one hand and hold the firm brush in the other and use it to position the leaf. 4Brush the leaf all over firmly. The folds in the leaf will make small cracks and gaps so the green paint underneath will show through. The finish will probably look quite messy at this point. Repeat steps 2-4 with the remaining sheets of copper leaf. 5 Once you have applied the copper leaf all over the side of the bath, use a soft cloth to coat it with clear wax. This will remove any excess gold leaf and flatten everything out, giving a smooth finish. If you want to see more of the green underneath, rub a little harder so that some of the copper leaf is removed. ask the experts How to boost your home's kerb appeal Our experts solve your most-asked home dilemmas. This month, we look at simple ways you can increase your property's exterior charm Nick Ее Product and training manager at Black+Decker What’s the best way to clean my driveway? Nick Ее, product and training manager at Black+Decker has over 10 years' experience working in the power tool industry. He says... Marianne Shillingford Creative director of Dulux 'Cleaning a driveway typically involves removing dirt, stains and debris. The most suitable cleaning method depends on the type of driveway surface you have and the nature of any stains. Using a pressure washer is an effective and efficient way to clean your driveway - simply use the pressure washer with a detergent designed for your particular surface and get to cleaning. Before applying any cleaner or solution to the driveway, I'd recommend testing the pressure settings in a small inconspicuous area to ensure compatibility and to prevent potential damage to the surface or grout. For those living in a terraced house with limited water supply to the front of the house, I recommend trying Black+ Decker's 1700W corded pressure washer as the self-priming feature allows you to use water from any source, for example a bucket, so the machine can be used without access to a tap.' 'Kerb appeal can be measured by a decrease in pace as people walk past by your home and there's no better way to get passers-by to slow down or even stop in their tracks than to add a new colour to your front door. Try Dulux's visually delicious Green Glade or beautifully moody Indigo Shade, which work effortlessly with any style of building or material for a guaranteed snail pace. It's so much easier and faster than you think too, if you use a tough product like Dulux's Weathershield Multisurface paint. It needs no primer, is quick drying, rain- and mould-proof and guarantees six year weather protection. It has a water-based finish that can be used on exterior wood, metal and uPVC. The key to getting the application right is to ensure the surface is clean beforehand and sanded down to remove any sheen.' 102 VxirHome yourhomestyle.uk
How do I get streak-free windows? Thomas Goodman, property and construction expert for MyJobQuote, has worked in the industry for over 20 years. He says... 'There are a few things you can do to achieve a streak- free window clean. Firstly, you want to avoid cleaning your windows on a particularly sunny day as the heat from the sun can cause your cleaning solution to dry too quickly, causing streaks on the windows. Photo MyJobQuote White vinegar is perfect for cleaning windows and achieving a streak-free shine - dilute it in a spray bottle with distilled water for the best results. Before cleaning the window, you should wipe down the frame with a damp cloth to remove any debris or dust that may be lingering. Spray the glass with your solution and ensure that you get an even coverage. Avoid over-spraying as this can cause drips which can leave streaks. Use a microfibre cloth and wipe the glass in one direction, and use a fresh cloth for each window pane to prevent dirt from spreading. Immediately after wiping the window, use another clean, dry microfibre cloth to buff the glass dry. Make sure you do this in the same direction that you wiped. This will help to prevent streaks and water spots from forming on the glass. Alternatively, you can also use a squeegee to help achieve a streak-free finish. Make sure the blade on the squeegee is clean and glide it from the top of the window to the bottom in smooth, overlapping strokes, and dry off the blade after each stroke, then buff as before.' 'Ткеле'ь и& betted шш/ to дебрамеш-Ьу' to d&iv deu/n even ttop in their trader than to add a near cvtour to yvarft&nt d&vr' Can I fix a rusty gate or should I replace it? Emma Irving, senior product manager at Rust-Oleum Europe has worked in the painting and decorating industry for 15 years. She says... 'You can bring rusty garden gates back to life with a few easy steps and products. First, remove all rust using a wire brush or by sanding. Take off any broken parts at this stage too, such as handles, to replace with new ones. You may also need to lubricate the hinges so they open and close smoothly. Before any painting project, clean the surface thoroughly using a methylated spirit or similar. I would recommend the Universal Degreaser and Cleaner spray from Zinsser. Apply an anti-corrosive primer that's suitable for exterior projects, like Blackfriar Red Oxide metal primer, to prevent rust. For a topcoat, there are two practical options from Rust-Oleum. GARDEN IDEAS (i/v mAy яагцен THIS MONTH Dust off your gardening gloves, wrap up warm and make a start on clearing away the winter debris - spring is just around the corner If you left flowering perennials to die back naturally at the end of last year, wildlife will have benefitted from the cover they provided over winter but with their new shoots actively growing, now is the time to cut back all those dead stems and clear away any weeds. Start to sow seeds of annuals at the end of the month. The half-hardy varieties will need protection until all risk of frost has passed at the end of May, but the hardy ones can go straight into well-prepared, weed-free soil as long as the ground isn’t waterlogged or frozen. Popular pollinator friendly annuals that are hardy include Phacelia tanacetifolia ‘Lacy phacelia’, Daucus carota ‘Wild carrot’ and Echium vulgare ‘Viper’s Bugloss’. Half-hardy annuals beloved by numerous winged insects include cosmos and Nicotiana tobacco plants, which are magnets for large moths. £kreet peov are- ea^ t<r ar<Hu cUuf bw 106 YnirHome yourhomestyle.uk
GARDEN IDEAS YourHomes (jirOUl ▼ Phacelia tanacetifolia 'Lacy phacelia' is great for bees and other insects, and it's a gorgeous cut flower too! Put the verticals of your garden to full use with hanging baskets filled with varieties such as tumbling cherry tomatoes and strawberries. Having the crops above ground level helps avoid slug damage. While it's safe to plant strawberries outside, tomato plants are not hardy so whether you grow them from seed or buy small plantlets, hold back on exposing them to the weather until it warms up in late May. Plant shallot and onion sets in weed-free soil, cover with fleece for the first few weeks or until their roots have anchored them in firmly, to prevent the birds pulling them out. If the weather isn't too inhospitable, sow seeds of radish, spinach, broad beans, spring onions and carrots outside. ▼ Sow half-hardy annuals like strawflowers indoors now and plant them out in May or June for a burst of late-summer colour! Plant out early varieties of chitted seed potatoes either directly into the ground or into potato grow bags or recycled compost bags. 1 As the soil begins to warm up, plant lilies, Crocosmia ‘Montbretia’ and gladioli in free-draining soil, to a depth of at least two to three times their size. If you garden on heavy clay soil, improve its structure by incorporating some horticultural grit into the planting hole. These hardy summer flowering bulbs and corms could also be planted into containers filled with a peat-free, loam-based compost, to provide stunning focal points on balconies, terraces and patios. The flowering buds of rhododendrons and azaleas are beginning to swell and will benefit from a feed of ericaceous fertiliser to ensure a colourful display. Give shrubs, roses and climbers a general-purpose fertiliser such as pelleted chicken manure. If you are growing sweet peas, make a cone-shaped support out of bamboo poles and position it in full sun. Plant two or three plug plants at the base of each pole and as they grow, tie the stems in loosely with soft garden twine. ffil Decorating Special 2024 YjurHome 107
