MADAME Madam Tussaud’s is the most popular and talked about wax museum in the world. There are wax models of the famous and infamous, both living and dead, from every walk of life. и Elvis Presley, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Marilyn Monro, Marlon Brando, Elisabeth Taylor, p Alfred Hitchcock, Charlie Chaplin, the British Royal family, Margaret Thatcher, Bill Clinton, Jack the Ripper... There is no other place where you can sec all R the celebrities at once, even stars, or probably with notorious criminals, this is the ures. rub shoulders . with kings I and queens or the latest pop The museum is situated in Marylebone Road, not far from the street which is famous as the home of the first great detective in fiction, Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes. There’s usually a long queue in front of the museum. No wonder! Many tourists would consider their trip to London worthless if they didn’t visit the famous Madam Tussaud’s. Last year, for example, the museum had 2,790,000 visitors! There are several halls at Madam Tussaud s. Highlights include the Grand Hall, the Chamber of Horrors and ‘The Spirit of London’ exhibition. The wax Tgures are standing and sitting, and sometimes even moving and talking. They are extremely realistic and when they look at you, their eves sparkling, you often feel uncomfortable in their company. Computer-controlled figures (they are called audioanimationics) are especially popular with the visitors. You will meet people, both men and women, who have made a lasting impact on our lives, and whose memories still live on. The earliest figure from history on display is William th e Conqueror. Mother Teresa was one of the few who declined, saying her work was important, not her person. Did you know? It costs about 40,000 dollars to make a wax figure at Madam Tussaud’s. Queen Elizabeth II has been modelled 17 times — more than anyone else — each time with a new head. jX ... e. The story of Madam Tussaud is really out of the common. Two things about her life are especially interesting. First, she was a witness of the French Revolution; second, she succeeded in business at a time when it was very unusual for a woman. Madam Tussaud, nee Marie Grosholts, was bom in Strasbourg, France, in 1761. Her father was killed during the Seven Years War only two months before Marie’s birth. So Marie lived witn her uncle, Dr Philippe Curtius, a doctor and a wax modeller. At the age of 9, Marie helped Dr Curtius to open his wax exhibition in Paris. Very soon, she learned to make wax figures herself. France was approaching revolution. Change was in the air. Dr Curtius’ house became a meeting place where many of the leading political thinkers of the time gathered to discuss their problems. When Marie was 17, she was allowed to model the great figures of the time. Among them were Francois Voltaire and Benjamin Franklin. Both of these figures are still on display at Madam Tussaud’s. Dr Curtius’ exhibition was so successful that Marie was invited to Versailles to help in the artistic education of King Louis XVI’s sister. During the period known as the ‘Terror’ Marie was imprisoned as a royalist but escaped the guillotine by making death masks from the severed heads of its victims often those of her friends... In 1794, Dr Curtius died and Marie inherited his wax collection. In the following year she married a French engineer, Francois Tussaud, and by 1800 had given birth to three children: a daughter, who died, and two sons. Her marriage was not a success, and in 1802, she took her collection of wax models to England. Marie saw neither France nor her husband again. She spent the next 33 years travelling all over the British Isles, exhibiting her growing collection of figwes to crowds of curious spectators. Week after week the wax figures were packed and unpacked to be shown to an admiring public. In the days before television, cinema and radio, Madam Tussaud’s figures were a sensation. In 1835, Madam Tussaud’s exhibition found a permanent home in Baker Street, not far from today’s exhibition. Madam Tussaud continued to make wax models until she was 81. She died in April 1850, at the age of 89. Her final work — a remarkable self-portrait — can still be seen today. In 1884, her grandsons moved the exhibition to its present site in Marylebone Road. Modelling methods at Madame Tussaud’s almost haven’t changed in 200 years. “It’s the same process, basically, and the same kind of wax is used,” says Craig, head of the portrait studio of the museum. These days, however, the bodies are made of fiberglass while originally they were made of leather stuffed with straw. Every year about 10 new figures are made at Madam Tussaud’s. As soon as a person is chosen, the first step is to collect information. It means photographs and articles if the person is alive, or portraits and biographies if the person is dead. Then it must be decided in which part of the exhibition the figure should be be placed, what the pose should be and its relationship to other wax portraits. Sittings usually take place at Madam Tussaud’s studios. But if celebrities can’t visit Madam Tussaud’s London studios, then the sculptors go to them. Queen Elziabeth II, for example, receives sculptors at Buckingham Palace. The measuring has to be very accurate. “We usually take about 150 measurements,’ says Craig. It takes about six months to complete a figure. Most of the time is spent on the head. The sculptor begins by modelling the head in clay. At this stage the hair is also sculpted. When the sculptor is satisfied with the clay model, the wax one is being made. The next important stage is to fix the eyes. These are individually made and painted to match the exact colour of the celebrity’s eyes. The eyes are then fixed from inside the head. Human hair, matched for colour and texture, is inserted in the scalp with the help of a tiny fork. The next process is colouring which is done by skilled artists. Once or twice a year the colour is washed off the head with soap and water and the head is recoloured. Madam Tussaud’s costume designers work as much as the sculptors do. Indeed, the historical figures in the exhibition give an excellent opportunity to study the dress of previous generations. Nowadays celebrities often give their own costumes to the exhibition. Audioanimatronic figures are carefully planned and programmed by a team of engineers. A Name on the Wall Steve Mason had lived in New York for three years. His address book was filled with the phone numbers of girls he knew and had dated. Then why, he wondered, was he sitting in a phone booth about to dial PL 1-2450 — the phone number of a girl he had never seen or even heard about? Because he was curious. He had seen the name Pam Starr and the number PL 1-2450 twice in one week. The first time had been on the wall of a phone booth on 42nd Street. It was just one of the many names and numbers written on the phone booth wall. Then a minute ago he saw the name and number again — this time near a phone in a drugstore. The name Pam Starr was the same. The handwriting was the same. And beneath it the same person had written. ‘Quite a chick.’ Steve was so curious that he looked up the name in the telephone book. There it was — Pam Starr, Plaza 1-2450. He was so surprised to see the name and number actually in the telephone book that he decided to call. He wanted to find out what would happen. It could be an interesting adventure. He could hear himself telling the whole story to his friends and laughing about it when it was over. So he took a deep breath, dropped in his dime, and dialled PL 1-2450. He heard two rings; then a soft, pleasant, girl’s voice said, ‘Hello’. ‘May I speak to Pam Starr? Steve asked. ‘This is Pam,’ ahe answered. ‘Who is this?* ‘Steven Wordsley,’ he said using a phoney name. ‘You don’t know me,’ he added quickly. Tve just moved to New York from Chicago. But before I left, a friend of a friend of mine gave me your name... Perhaps we could meet and go somewhere for a drink.’ The girl hesitated. ‘It’s impossible for me to know much about you from a phone call.’ ‘That’s right,’ Steve said. ‘But there’s no way for vou to find out about me except by taking a chance. So how about a date? He paused. ‘Come on. Gamble. I swear I don’t have two heads.’ She laughed and said, ‘I’m sure you don’t. But I’ve had a couple of blind dates before, and they’ve been pretty gruesome, if you know what I mean.' Steve had a good idea of what she meant. He could picture this gorgeous doll getting stuck with some real dog for a date. Then she said, ‘I ve got an idea. I like your voice, and I think I’ll like you. But I might not. And then again, you might not like me. So why don t we go to a movie? I like foreign ones best. You pick one out and call me back. Then we’ll go out, and even if we don’t like each other at least we can both enjoy the show.’ ‘Uh, all right, sure,’ Steve answered. He was a little surprised by the way she was arranging the date, but he promised to pick out a movie and call her back. Then he said goodbye and hung up. He felt proud of himself. There was no question in his mind that this chick knew her way around with men. Steve found a Swedish movie that sounded good, but he didn’t call her back right away. He waited two days so he wouldn’t seem too eager. He had taken a chance on a blind date and had lost, but he decided to go through with it, anyway. This homely girl probably accepted a lot of blind dates just so she could go out. And the boys who got stuck with her probably thought it was a good joke to write her name and number on the walls of phone booths. Still, the girl seemed nice, and the adventure would be something he could tell his friends. As they headed for the movie, Steve expected Pam to be nervous, but she acted as relaxed as if she had been dating him for months. After the show they went to a restaurant. While they were eating, she talked about her life in New York. ‘Do you go out often?’ Steve asked. ‘It’s probably luck,’ she said, ‘but I get enough phone calls to keep me busy. I get a lot of calls from guys I don’t know. I’m not sure where they get my name. Maybe from a friend, like you did. I don’t know. Some are nice and some aren’t.’ ‘Well, which am I?’ Steve asked. ‘Nice,’ she laughed. On their way back to her apartment, Steve lied again and told Pam that his company was sending him back to Chicago the next week and that he didn’t know when he would return to New York. Steve couldn’t decide if she believed his story, but he didn’t really care. He had taken her out and shown her a good time. That was all she could expect with her looks. When they got to her apartment, they stood in the doorway and said goodnight. ‘Thanks for the lovely evening,’ she said. ‘Yeah,’ Steve said, ‘it was a good movie.’ She smiled and said, ‘I enjoyed it. I really did.’ She seemed to know that she wouldn’t be asked for another date. Suddenly Steve felt very7 sorry for her. He decided that it wouldn’t hurt him to fake an interest in her, and it would probably mean a lot to her if she thought someone wanted to see her again. ‘I’m kind of sorry I have to leave town,’ he said. ‘I really would have liked to see you again. There’s just a chance that I’ll gel back to New York soon. For a day or so. Maybe we can go out again. Could I call you?' For a minute she looked as if she didn’t believe what she had heard. Then her smile got brighter. ‘Could you? I’d love that! REFUSING AND ACCEPTING 1. You probably remember how Soilazzo, a gangster, made a business proposal to Don Corleone. Look again at the script from The Godfather (SpeakOut No 5/6, 1998). In Don Corleone’s position, if you wanted to refuse Sollazzo’s proposal, which of these phrases would you use? I’m sorry, but that’s out of the question. I must say no to you and I’ll give you my reasons. Г m afraid we can’t agree to that, but I hope to do business with you some other time. I need some time to think about that. Which of the above phrases is the strongest form of refusal? Which phrase suggests the possibility of compromise? Think of other phrases that Don Corleone could use to refuse the offer. 2. Now read what Don Corleone actually says in the script below. DON CORLEONE. I said that I would see you because I heard that you were a serious man, to be treated with respect. But I must say no to you and I’ll give you my reasons. It’s true I have a lot of friends in politics, but they wouldn’t be friendly very long if they knew my business was drugs and not gambling — which they regard as a harmless vice. How to Manage Stress No one can avoid stress, especially nowadays. But we can certainly reduce its effects. Here are some simple rules. Live in the present! • Live in the present — don’t spend time worrying about how much better things were in the past or what might happen in the future. Most people who are able to manage stress have perfected the art of living in the now. Love yourself! • Relax your demands on yourself a bit, most of us expect too much. • Always be kind and gentle with yourself — be a friend to yourself. • Discuss your problem with a friend, relative, or some other person. Don’t keep it to yourself. • Stop whatever it is you are doing, put your feet up and read a few pages of your favourite romantic novel. You deserve it! Learn to relax! • Try to relax and not to think of the problem that worries you. There are several ways to do this and they are largely individual. • Some people like listening to music. • Try to read something that takes your mind off your trouble. • Solving crossword puzzles may help some people. • You can go for a walk or a drive. • Doing something about the house or in the garden might help you. • Get enough sleep. If you are the type who can sleep under stress, the best thing is to sleep it off. Exercise your body! • There’s no need to train for the Olympics to reduce stress. Even such simple activities like walking or cycling help. Aerobics is just wonderful. • Lie on your back on the floor or in bed. Starting with your toes, tense them and then relax, move up to your calves, then thighs, then hands. Tense and relax every part, finishing with your face. Fix your eyes on something in the room. Stare at it, then close your eyes and try to picture it again — this calms the mind. Some more things you can do • Say no to what you don’t have time for or what isn’t interesting. • Do unpleasant tasks in the morning rather than in the evening. • Simplify things whenever possible. Look at large projects as a scries of steps you complete one at a time. • Let yourself laugh, especially when you feel grumpiest. • Don’t just sit and brood over your troubles: do something! Believe it or not... • Potatoes and pastas can reduce stress. Pasta provides energy , protein and vitamin B, and gives us a feeling of calmness. Potatoes are rich in vitamin C and help us relax. • The smell of green apples and lavender makes us feel happier and reduces headaches. • Too much alcohol or sugar can lead to depression ard loss of memory.

It was August 31, 1888. He silently came out of the midnight shadows into the dark and narrow streets of Whitechapel. Il was chilly and damp - not unusual for London even in the summer, especially before dawn. The streets seemed deserted... In the morning Police Constable John Neil found the body of a woman lying on her back. Her throat was slashed from ear to ear. Her eyes were wide open and staring... That was his first victim. Who will be the next ? In the early autumn of 1888, a man stalked the streets of London’s poorest district, striking terror at people’s hearts. His identity, his motives are to this day unknown. A man without a face, but with a name the whole world knows and fears... Jack the Ripper! Few names in history are as instantly recognisable. He struck at night while his victims were walking the street, cutting their throats and mutilating their bodies. All his victims were prostitutes, “the poorest of the poor” as the East London Observer called them. Whitechapel in Victorian London was a place known for its poverty and crime. For the most part the people who lived there were the working poor, those who worked occasionally, those who did not work at all and criminals. They lived in tenement houses under deplorable conditions. More than half of the children born in the East End died before the age of five. Of those who sur vived, many were mentally and physically handicapped. Prostitution was one of the only reliable means through which a single woman or widow could maintain herself. The police estimated that in 1888 there were some 1,200 prostitutes in Whitechapel. Many of them lived in lodging houses. The sleeping rooms were long rooms with rows of beds, often infested with vermin and insects. If a woman had not earned enough money that day to pay for a bed for the night, she had to sleep in the street... In the squalor of crowded tenements and dark narrow streets the Whitechapel murderer had found a perfect place for his work. It is unclear just how many women Jack the Ripper killed. It is generally accepted that he killed five, though some say seven or more. All the women were killed between early August and early November, 1888. In each case the throat was cut, and the body was mutilated. The ferocity of these murders shocked even the veteran police surgeons. policemen dressed up as prostitutes and acted as a decoy. The results were disappointing. Queen Victoria was furious. Even today, with all the techniques of modern forensic science and psychology, it's extremely difficult to catch a serial killer. Fingerprinting, blood typing and other important forensic techniques were unknown in Victorian times. Even photography of victims was not a usual practice. There was no crime laboratory at Scotland Yard until the 1930s. There were a few witnesses but the information they gave wasn’t very helpful. The following is a list of probabilities about Jack the Ripper: Average or below average height Between 30 and 40 years of age in 1888 Dark-haired and dark-eyed Did not dress as a worker Probably wore a dark cape and a deerstalker Knew human anatomy Was right-handed (though at first he was thought to be lefthanded) Scotland Yard had three main suspects (among them Michael Ostrog, a Russian doctor) but failed to prove that any of them had committed the murders. The police received hundreds of letters from people who claimed to be the murderer. Only one of the letters seemed to be authentic. The sender’s address was “From Hell,” and part of a human kidney was enclosed. As winter set in, the frantic police activity began to slow. All suspects had been interrogated and leads came to a dead end. Jack the Ripper had left the scene for good. His file was closed in 1892, but the legend lived on. Doctors, members of the Royal Family, aristocrats, black magicians, writers, painters, coachmen, policemen and many others have been accused of being the most famous killer of all times. In the 1970s, Queen Victoria’s grandson, Prince Albert Victor Christian Edward, the Duke of Clarence, became a popular suspect. A more recent suspect appeared in 1995. Francis Tumblety, an American who often visited London, was accused of being Jack lhe Ripper. New suspects are unearthed all the time. By today’s standards, Jack the Ripper would hardly make the headlines: we have got used to serial killers... Why then, over a hundred years later, are there allegedly more books written on Jack than all of the American presidents combined? Why are there stories, songs, operas, movies and a never-ending stream of books on this one Victorian criminal? Why is this symbol of terror as popular a subject today as he was in Victorian London? Jack the Ripper represents the classic whodunit’. He comes from out of the fog, kills violently and quickly. He leaves a trail of blood that leads... nowhere. He can’t be caught... The gorge extends beyond Niagara Falls for about 11 kilometres. It is about 61 metres deep and consists of layers of different kinds of stone. Through the years, the gorge has become longer and longer. The ledge of the Horseshoe Falls wears away at a rate varying from about 8 centimetres to as much as 2 metres a year. The ledge of the American Falls erodes more slowly because less water flows over it. Each year, about 2.5 centimetres wears away. Niagara Falls was probably formed about 12,000 years ago, after the last great ice sheet melted from the region. The melting ice caused Lake Erie to overflow. The overflow formed the Niagara River. The river ran northward over a high cliff called the Niagara Escarpment. The Niagara River cut through the escarpment and, over the centuries, formed Niagara Falls. Indian tribes lived in the area long before the first Europeans arrived. Louis Hennepin, a Roman Catholic priest, left the first written account of Niagara Falls. In a book published in 1683, Hennepin wrote: “These waters foam and boil in a fearful manner. They thunder continually.” Excellent views of the falls can be seen from the brink of the precipice, from one of the observation towers, or in a helicopter from above. Several steamers called The Maid of the Mist take sightseers close to the churning waters at the base of the falls. Parks line both sides of the river near Niagara Falls. At night, wide beams of coloured lights illuminate the falls and the raging waters seem gentle when covered with a colourful melody of red, yellow, blue, green and purple. By day, a magnificent rainbow can be seen above the falls. Niagara Falls not only delights its visitors but sprays them with gentle mist which reaches up past the land level and can be seen for miles. Jackie put the microphone back on its post and danced around with her guitar as Annie and Liz played the song’s hypnotic intro. Then she pressed her lips close to the microphone and began to sing. In eleven months of intense rehearsals, Jackie and the Rippers had never sounded as good as they did right now. And they knew it. They were smiling at each other happily. He had one left over. “Where’s Jackie?” About fifteen minutes later they found her at the bar across the street. There was a bottle of wine in front of her on the counter. It was nearly empty. “Christ, did you see that guy out there tonight? Christ, did you see him?” “What did he look like?” asked Liz. “I couldn’t see anything. The glare, you know.” “He looked ... well ... he looked creepy. Like one of those devils in those old-time pictures.” They walked back across the street together. “This dude you saw,” said Liz, “did he do anything, or was it just the way he looked?” “Both,” Jackie answered quickly. ‘The worst was when we were playing ‘Venus in Furs.’ He pointed at me. “But everybody in the club was pointing at us.” “Not like this/’ said Jackie. She shivered. “What was this cat wearing?” asked Gary. “Did he have a mask or something?” She shook her head. “No, he had a real face. And he was wearing a cape and a Sherlock Holmes hat.” “Sounds like this cat was dressed as Jack the Ripper,” muttered Gary. Jackie nodded. “Yeah... yeahl He was Jack the Ripper!” Their van, a bright red Ford painted with the group’s logo on each side, was parked not far from the club. No musical has been more popular with theatregoers than Cats. Based on a collection of poems by T. S. Eliot, with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, it is the longest-running show in world history. The original production opened at the New London Theatre, in the West End on May 11,1981. It was a phenomenal success in spite of the fact thai many critics gave it less than complimentary reviews. Eight years later it celebrated both its birthday and another important event: it had become, after 3358 performances, the longest-running musical in the history of the British theatre On June 19, 1997, Cats became the longest-running show in the history of Broadway. Since then Cats has been played to packed houses in approximately 250 cities in 20 countries around the world and has been translated into ten languages. It is estimated that Cats has been seen by almost 50 million people! The show's most famous song, Memory, has now become one.of the most successful songs in musical history.
