EDITOR’S LETTER
YACHT ECONOM ICS
yacht is much more than fun transportation. It’s a powerful
economic engine that drives all kinds of local and global dollars—for years.
¶ It all starts with the owner’s dream. This enthusiast is so driven by a passion
to be on the water that he or she puts pen to paper, and contracts with a shipyard to turn the dream into a floating reality. Deposits are made, designers are employed
to transform the idea into a sketch, conversations with the owner follow, and the sketch
morphs into digital renderings of what the end result will be. Naval architects are paid to
do the kind of math that makes me break out into a sweat, as well as to do comprehensive
testing to ensure the vessel can withstand the rigors of a life on salt water. ¶ Suppliers
from myriad industries are looped into the mission to provide the shipyard with all the
raw materials, furnishings, electronics and other equipment required to build this dream
boat. The completed plan and the build timeline are established, and an entire shipyard
is now employed for the next year—or two, or three, or more—to work day in and day
out to turn these detailed plans into a yacht. ¶ As the build progresses, the owner makes

more deposits. These monies are disbursed to the designers, naval architects, suppliers
and craftspeople working on the build every day. Those dollars are then recirculated
back into the economy, all while a dream is being realized. ¶ When the build is completed, the shipyard’s initial work is over, but this economic engine is only getting warmed
up. Depending on the size of the yacht and the owner’s plans for where it will cruise, a
captain and crew are hired. More money goes into more pockets and is then recirculated.
The yacht needs fuel. That means more money going into more pockets. The yacht will
travel, and as it crosses the blue, it will pour more green into countless local economies,
from fees and dockage to entertainment, attractions and more. Everywhere it goes, the
location will benefit. ¶ After a period of time spent cruising, the vessel will need maintenance. Depending on the yacht’s location and the size and scope of the punch list, this
work could be done at a service yard, or it could mean heading back to the original shipyard, where the craftsmen will now make the yacht as good as new. ¶ Yes, what we’re
talking about is a boat, but when you look at the bigger picture, it’s so very much more. !

The brokerage market is leveling out just in time for boat-show season, with more boats becoming available.

CURRENTS > Brokerage Market Update
obody is ready to say just yet that the universe of brokerage
boats has fully shifted from a seller’s market to a buyer’s market.
But longtime sales brokers do say the brokerage market is finally
leveling out after the craziness that left sellers in control throughout
the pandemic. ¶ “There’s more price negotiation than there was,” says sales
broker Jeff Stanley at Gilman Yachts in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. “There are
more people getting into contracts and having second thoughts. They watch
the news, they look at the interest rates, they get the insurance quotes and
requirements, and they change their mind.” ¶ Curtis Stokes, president of
Curtis Stokes & Associates in Fort Lauderdale, says the market recalibration
is the talk of the city. “Other brokers at other firms are now calling me to ask
if things have slowed down, because things have slowed down for them,” he

!!GET INSURANCE IN PLACE Yes, interest rates are high, but brokers say big insurance
quotes are often an even bigger sticking point when trying to close on a brokerage
boat right now. !!NEGOTIATE WITHIN REASON It’s not a full-on buyer’s market. Lowball
offers generally aren’t accepted. !!KNOW THE AVERAGES Demand is slowing for boats in
the $300,000 to $400,000 range, but above $500,000, there are still multiple buyers.

says. “We’re definitely picking up more
listings. Now, it’s fall, and we tend to get
more listings, but people are starting to
finally put their boats on the market.” ¶
Tim Derrico, director of sales at HMY,
says owners have been clamoring to put
boats into shows too. “I’ve got a list a mile
long for our Fort Lauderdale display,” he
said in early September. “For the last few
years, it’s been scratching and clawing
for boats to go in the show. There are
definitely more boats available.” ¶ For
boats from 50 to 80 feet length overall,
Stanley says, high interest rates mean
fewer people are looking to buy, equating
to less competition for deals. Derrico also
says interest rates are a factor, with the
overall economy tough to predict going
forward. “I’m a voracious reader of The
Wall Street Journal, and one page is the
end of the world, the next page is great,”
he says. “It’s hard to figure right now.”..
As of early September, brokers said, all the slips for the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show were filled.

A Miami-based yachtsman commissioned the build on this 141-foot yacht from Turkish builder Alia, with a brief that calls for maximizing the open-air
lifestyle of Florida and the Bahamas. Omega Architects in the Netherlands handled the yacht’s design, with sunbathing spaces aft, on the foredeck
and on the sun deck, which has a hot tub. Inside, there are five guest staterooms, including a main-deck master, along with quarters for seven crew.
Sliding-glass doors on either side of the salon help bring the outdoors in. Power will be a pair of MTU 16V 2000 M96L engines, which Alia says will
allow for a top speed of 22.5 knots. Range at 12 knots is projected to be 3,200 nautical miles. Delivery is scheduled in summer 2024.

This bold, blue beauty is Project Thunderball, a custom Vripack design that the Italian shipyard CRN is building with a steel hull and an aluminum
superstructure. The Dutch design firm Vripack handled exteriors and naval architecture, with interiors and outdoor furniture by Nauta Design in
Italy. Inside, the five-deck yacht will have accommodations for 12 guests and 15 crew. Gross tonnage is 1,100, and a peak-shaving system will reduce fuel
burn. According to the shipyard, the owner is a passionate sailor, so a separate, smaller sailboat is also being built to go with the mothership. The plan is
for the yacht to spend time in the Mediterranean, as well as in Florida and the Bahamas, with a focus on scuba diving, sailing and fishing.

Videoworks, long known for audiovisual setups on yachts, has entered the arena of remote health monitoring.

Italy’s Videoworks has been a
go-to company for yacht owners
worldwide who want the latest
onboard technology. The firm is known
for installing audiovisual setups that rival
those inside mansions ashore, as well as
satellite communications, cybersecurity
systems and, most recently, home automation packages that incorporate artificial intelligence. The custom interfaces
that Videoworks offers let yacht guests

Health Remote Monitoring, an area of
medicine that’s been around for decades
but that really started to accelerate along
with the internet’s evolution in the 1990s.
During the pandemic the past few years,
telemedicine systems got another technological boost, when all kinds of medical
experts, including doctors and veterinarians, began offering patient consultations
via video calls and online data transfers.
¶ Today, numerous types of telemedicine
systems are available, many of them in
collaboration with service centers where
on-call medical professionals are at the
ready for incoming information and requests for help. Videoworks says it’s taking
a slightly different approach, though, with
more of a focus on patient privacy—what
with overall privacy being a key concern
aboard most superyachts worldwide.
The Videoworks system is based on a connection with the client’s personal physician, as opposed to a service center.

¶ “What makes this service truly original
is the direct connection with the patient’s
personal physician, rather than with a
service center, as is commonly the case
with telemedicine, in which the patient’s
data is analyzed by whichever doctor is
on duty,” the company said when announcing the service. “This preserves the
patient’s privacy and, above all, ensures
direct communication with his or her own
doctor, who is familiar with the patient’s
pathologies and state of health.” ¶ Experts
in the telemedicine field say one of the
top trends to watch is the increasing use
of AI in remote-monitoring systems, for
everything from diagnosis and diagnostics
to patient follow-up. Expectations also
include an increased use of wearables
in these systems, with watches and other technology now able to track people’s
heart rates, blood pressure and other important vital signs. ¶ All of these system
integrations happening aboard a yacht,
while still maintaining personal privacy
for owners and guests, will require expertise in cybersecurity protocols, satellite
communications and more. That’s what
makes Videoworks so well positioned to
become a major player in the telemedicine
marketplace on the world’s oceans.!¶ In
September at the Monaco Yacht Show,
Videoworks gave showgoers a glimpse of
the future, allowing them to test the Health
Remote Monitoring system. Visitors to
the company’s booth could measure their
blood oxygen level and heart rate using
a classic pulse oximeter, reproducing
what the system does on board!a yacht.
The system can transmit data such as blood pressure, heartbeat and blood oxygenation.

hen it comes to Tiara Yachts, the talk around the dock is that its
boats are “overbuilt,” meaning they are constructed to handle harsh
conditions. This compliment is born out of the company’s Great Lakes
heritage, where the tighter wave periods and unpredictable weather
patterns can make things uncomfortable in a hurry. The Tiara 48 LE, the flagship
of the builder’s outboard-powered sport lineup, lives up to that rugged reputation
while leveling up the luxury amenities. ¶ The cockpit is the most noteworthy area
on the boat, with several great features for socializing. Start with the power-actuated
rotating lounge module. With the push of a button, it will rotate a full 180 degrees. Its
tracking system stops and locks it in place at any angle that’s desired. Facing forward,

orty years ago this past september, in the
waters of Rhode Island Sound just off the coastal city of
Newport, a crew of Aussies shocked the sailing world.
The 12 Metre Australia II defeated the American
boat Liberty to win the 1983 America’s Cup and bring the New
York Yacht Club’s 132-year defense of the Auld Mug to a conclusion. It’s safe to say the Cup, and my hometown of Newport,
have never been the same. ¶ I spent a lot of time on the sound
that summer taking in the action, so when I signed up to volunteer on a marshal boat for the latest edition of the 12 Metre
World Championship regatta
in August, I found myself on
the very same waters, which
turned into a pretty nostalgic voyage down a nautical
memory lane. But the graceful
Twelve I couldn’t take my eyes
off wasn’t the winner of the
Modern Division, Challenge
XII, or even the victor of the
Traditional/Vintage Division, Columbia. Nope, I was
more or less transfixed on the
runner-up to Challenge XII,
a striking-blue yacht called
Freedom. Of all the entries
in the 10-boat fleet, to me,
Freedom was easily the most
historic and memorable. ¶ Three years before the Australians
absconded with the Cup, in 1980, with the estimable Dennis
Conner in command, Freedom won the contest in dominant
fashion, and it seemed like the New York Yacht Club’s winning
streak would go on forever. It was designed by the legendary
naval architecture firm Sparkman & Stephens, which had drawn
the lines of every Cup winner but one since 1936. Conner was
back on the helm in the losing effort in ’83, but he would find
redemption, winning the Cup back for the United States in
Western Australia in 1987. But for S&S, Freedom marked the
F
end of an illustrious era. The firm would never again create a
Cup winner. ¶ For the 12 Metre Worlds, ironically enough, the
navigator aboard Freedom was a lanky old Aussie mate of mine
called Grant Simmer, who’d served in the same capacity aboard
Australia II for his country’s winning effort way back when. With
the exception of the gray hair, he looked exactly the same. ¶ This
time, however, Simmer couldn’t work his magic. Unlike the America’s Cup, where boats compete in one-on-one match racing, the
World Championship event is fleet racing, with everyone out on
the track at the same time. It’s a different game. And Challenge
XII had a ringer of its own: the
president of North Sails, Ken
Read, also a longtime America’s Cup veteran. As far as I
was concerned, Freedom was
easily the prettiest of all the
Modern yachts. When push
came to shove, though, it was
no longer the fastest. ¶ Today’s
America’s Cup competition,
conducted on closed-course
race tracks in skittish foiling
catamarans—about as far
removed as possible from a
stately 12 Metre racing in the
open ocean—bears little resemblance to what the event
looked like in the early 1980s.
And Newport has undergone a radical makeover as well. The
shipyards where the Cup boats used to reside between races have
been replaced by condos and hotels, and the only real remaining
trace of the America’s Cup is the boulevard of the same name.
It’s a reminder that the only true constant in life is change. ¶
But for a few afternoons last August, I could shut my eyes for a
moment of reminiscence and open them up to see what I can
only describe as a fleeting image of a bygone time. Freedom
may be a footnote in the history of yacht racing, but the big,
beautiful blue boat still looks powerful and fantastic all the same.!!
Naval architecture firm Sparkman & Stephens designed the 1980 America’s Cup winner Freedom, the last victorious 12 Metre.

seems like a mainstream flybridge motoryacht. But it’s not. Strictly speaking,

MARSS’ MOBtronic combines cameras, radar and AI to identify person-overboard emergencies.

erson overboard!” ¶ few phrases conjure darker fears
among mariners. The good news, of course, is that contemporary beacons and geofence-breaching pendants can swiftly
alert a skipper and crew about an MOB emergency, and can
often help with rescue efforts. The less-than-cheery news, however, is
that this equipment requires crewmembers, guests and family to carry
or wear the equipment. This scheme can also presuppose that a person
who has gone overboard is still conscious, treading water and capable
of activating a beacon, probably in a seaway, maybe at night. ¶ For the
owners and captains of superyachts that carry at least 18 feet of freeboard, MARSS Group’s groundbreaking MOBtronic system provides
safety without active user participation. ¶ The Cruise Vessel Security
and Safety Act of 2010 mandates that all cruise ships operating in US
waters carry equipment that can detect or capture imagery of people
who have gone overboard. The resulting ISO standards are strict: Systems must achieve a 95 percent probability of detection while recording
no more than one false alarm per day, on average. ¶ Flash-forward to
P
today: UK-based MARSS has developed a
solution called MOBtronic, which it has
been selling to a few superyachts longer
than 300 feet. While MOBtronic currently has a significant freeboard requirement,
it employs active-detection technologies
rather than pendants or beacons. It can
autonomously sense a person overboard
and immediately advise its human-onthe-loop operator. ¶ MARSS is also exploring a solution with lower freeboard
requirements for smaller yachts. While
this technology is not currently available,
MOBtronic offers a look at what’s possible
when sensors and hybrid intelligence
converge. ¶ With regard to hardware,
each installation involves a network of
MOBtronic sensor pods that are installed
along a vessel’s upper decks. Collectively,
this equipment creates 360 degrees of
coverage. There’s a virtual or physical

server running NiDAR CORE, which
is MARSS’ hybrid intelligence system
that blends detection technologies and
human input. There’s also a dedicated
touchscreen display. Each sensor pod
measures 14.1 by 10 by 3.6 inches, weighs
14.55 pounds and carries an IP66/67 rating. Each pod houses Doppler-enabled,
microsize solid-state radars that constantly sweep an area measuring roughly
262 feet long and 26 feet wide (and at
least 18 feet high). The package also incorporates a thermal-imaging camera
and a processor. Additionally, owners
can spec a daylight camera, but this isn’t
required by ISO standards. ¶ For scale,
a large cruise ship might be fitted with
12 sensor pods, while a 300-plus-foot
yacht might carry six. ¶ “The sensor
pods themselves have computers built
into them, and they are doing most of
the heavy-lift processing,” Mike Collier,
MARSS’ business development manager,
says of the radar- and video-feed analytics. “It’s very light on data that has
to go back to the central server.” ¶ The
way MOBtronic works starts with radar,
which effectively serves as the system’s
tripwire. From there, it progresses to
thermal imagery and analytics. Each
MOBtronic radar pipes its signal to its
processor, which has been trained via
digital signal processing to identify an
overboard person’s volume, size, shape
and velocity (think bird mode, but for
finding human beings). ¶ Should the radar signal detect a possible match, the
pod’s thermal-imaging camera begins
working to verify, via video analytics, if
this is actually a person in the water. ¶
“It’s a five-stage process,” Collier says. “It
takes data from the radar and does two

FN RONALD
GAGE’S
LIFESAVING
RESCUE IN
LAKE PLACID
Despite having not yet
achieved his goal of
becoming a US Coast
Guard rescue swimmer,
Ronald Gage’s skills
helped him save his stepfather, Norm Freund,
from drowning in upstate
New York’s Lake Placid
after cardiac arrest. The
two were swimming on
a triathlon course when
Freund began struggling.
Gage towed him to a family’s canoe about 100 yards
away and then got him
back to shore. By the time
EMTs arrived, Freund
was revived. He was
flown to a nearby hospital,
where he survived a
quintuple-bypass surgery.
This past May, Gage
received the Coast Guard
Silver Lifesaving Medal.
“I wouldn’t be who I
am without him,” Gage
says. “And he’s definitely
paved the way for me and
my outlook on life too.”
