Introduction
This fifth edition of Palabra por Palabra has been further revised to cover a
wide range of vocabulary relevant to the specifications of the main AS and
A2 examination boards. Some new words and phrases have been added and
some which no longer seem relevant have been discarded.
All chapters have been divided into manageable subsections, and cross-references
provided where relevant vocabulary may occur in more than one chapter.
In the topic-based chapters (3 to 22), words and phrases considered more suitable
for A2 level are printed in bold. You will notice that there are fewer of these in the
earlier chapters, which mainly cover the AS topics, and that they predominate in the
later chapters, which are aimed at A2 level and in some cases beyond.
At the end of each topic-based chapter you will also find a revised list of useful
websites, which deal with or provide links to aspects of the particular topics.
Of the other chapters, Chapter 1 provides a vocabulary framework for developing
a topic either in essay form or orally, with the more sophisticated phrases in bold.
Chapter 2 provides material for describing character and personality, which could
prove useful to a number of topics. At the end of the book, Chapter 23 deals with
words which might not mean what their immediate appearance might suggest;
Chapter 24 offers help in choosing the correct equivalent for English words with
several meanings and offers alternatives to some overused words; and Chapter
25 offers a list of useful, mainly abstract, verbs, which you could well need, but
which don’t fit easily under any topic heading.
Learning vocabulary
As an advanced language student, you will by now be aware that words
are the tools of the trade. However sound your knowledge of grammar and
facts, and however brilliant your ideas, you cannot express them without the
necessary words! And unlike when you learnt your mother tongue, unless you
are extremely lucky, you won't be surrounded by people speaking Spanish
24/7! More likely your contact will be limited to a few hours of Spanish classes
per week. Try, however, to increase your contact through websites, satellite
broadcasts, newspapers, magazines or other materials in Spanish that you can
lay your hands on. This little book provides you with a good selection of words
and phrases on most of the topics you are likely to encounter, but you should
also keep your own vocabulary notebook (paper or electronic) and record, as
far as possible under topic headings any further ones you come across.
iii
Vocabulary learning is a very personal process and each of us will discover the
method that suits us best. However, you must accept that it won’t ‘stick’ without
some positive effort on your part. The important thing is to experiment and find
the method that works best for you. And, by the way, ‘method’ is the key word:
you must be methodical!
The following hints might help:
• Don’t try to absorb too much at once: 20 words might be sufficient,
possibly fewer.
• You will need to check these several times, at intervals, marking the ones
you know.
• Take a break or do something else, then check again.
• Check them yet again before learning the next batch.
• Work alone, checking yourself, or get a friend or family member to test you.
• Don’t let lists of words accumulate. Better to learn little and often.
• Use the words you have learnt in your written and spoken work: ‘use them or
lose them* applies here!
You can also expand your vocabulary by taking a word and seeing how many
related words you know: e.g. cocina-kitchen, cooking or cooker; cocer- to
cook; coccidn- (process of) cooking; cocinar- to cook; cocinero/a- cook / chef.
You can browse this section of a dictionary for further related words, or work with
a friend to see who can find the most words. You can also see how many words
you can find associated by ideas: cocina - gas - electrico - electricidad - luz -
alumbrar, etc; or by opposites: empezar - terminar, permitir- prohibir.
Websites
A useful Spanish search engine is www.terra.es, which has a number of easily
accessible links (enlaces). However, Google and Yahoo are perfectly adequate
if you type in www.google.es or www.yahoo.es.

develop and conclude a written or spoken argument. The subsections are
arranged in an order that seems to be the most logical, but do remember that
many words and expressions could well be used in other parts of the argument,
and in other contexts.

Many Spanish words of almost identical appearance to their English equivalents
also have much the same meaning. Some, however, although they may share
one or more meanings, are used more commonly with a different sense, as in
Section 23.1. Some other words have a totally different meaning, which could
even lead you into embarrassing situations. These latter, in Section 23.2, are
known as ‘false friends’. So pay close attention to these lists!
