Instructions

1 strand cotton embroidery floss for backstitches
needlework from the back before framing as desired.
In areas stitched with DMC Color Variations floss, complete each cross-stitch in full before moving on to the next. This method will keep the gradual color changes of the floss in your stitching, The traditional method of completing an entire row of half cross-stitches before going back and finishing the full cross-stitches will result in a more uniform color because the subtle variations will be lost.

Instructions
Center the design and begin stitching over two threads. Work cross-stitches with two strands of linen embroidery floss. Carefully press the needlework from the back before framing
Project Tip
Linen embroidery floss has a slight nap, or direction, to its fibers. Always thread the needle with the end of the floss as it came out of the skein to reduce the amount of breakage or knots. Using lengths of linen thread no longer than 12" to 15" is recommended.

General Instructions
Center the design and begin stitching. Work cross-stitches and French knots with two strands of cotton embroidery floss. For backstitches worked with DMC 3345/Anchor 268, use two strands of cotton embroidery floss. Use one strand of cotton embroidery floss to work all other backstitches.
Carefully press the needlework from the back before finishing.
Finishing Materials
’/< yard coordinating fabric 17" X 17" piece of low-loft batting 14" square pillow insert
Finishing Instructions
Mark a line 1" from the edge of the stitching on all four sides. Center the needlework piece right side up on the batting piece and secure in place with pins. From fabric, cur two 2'1“ X 16” strips and two 24" X 12" strips. Sew the short strips to the right and left side of the needlework, with right sides together, using the marked lines as placement lines. (Use ’/," scam allowances throughout unless otherwise indicated.) Press the seam our fully and apply the longer top and bottom strips in the same manner. Press. Trim excess
barring and needlework fabric even with the edges of the border strips. This should make the pillow top measure approximately 15“ square.
For pillow backing, cut two pieces of backing fabric 11" x 17". Sew a 1" hem along one 17" side of each piece of fabric. With right sides up, layer the two finished edges over each other, overlapping them by about 3”. Pin in place.
Lay flat with rhe right side facing up and rhe top flap facing down. Place rhe pillow top on the backing with right sides together, being careful to have the needlework facing in the correct direction. Pin in two or three places on all four sides to hold securely. Sew around all four sides. Trim any excess backing fabric and clip the corners at a diagonal to reduce bulk in the scam allowance. Turn right side out through the flap in the back. Work comers out and press well. Topstitch around the perimeter of the pillow using a */:" scam allowance to create a mock binding. Insert pillow form through the back flap.
Project Tip
To determine the final design sze when stitched on a different count of fabric, just divide the design's st tch count by the fabric's thread count. A design that is 100 stitches high will work out be 10" high when stitched on lOct. ‘abifc or approximately 5'6" high when stitched on lOct. fabric <100 e 18 - S'ARemember co use half of the thread count when stitching over two threads.

Instructions
Center the design and begin stitching.
Work cross-stitches with two strands of cotton embroidery floss or Kreinik very fine (“4) braid. Use two strands of embroidery floss to work half stitches. Work French knot with one strand of embroider}' floss. For backstitches worked with DMC 3816/Anchor 876, use three strands of cotton embroidery floss. Work all other backstitches with one strand of cotton embroidery floss or Kreinik very fine (#4) braid. Use three strands of cotton embroidery floss to work all straight stitches. Lightly press the needlework from the back before framing as desired.
Project Tip
Working with Several
Floss Colors When working with frequent color changes, use several needles to avoid rethreading the same needle over and over. Work a few stitches in one color, bring the needle to the front of the fabric and put it aside. Introduce the next floss color and needle and continue.
Cross-Stitch Essentials
The written instructions for each project indicate where to begin stitching. For most projects, the starting point is ar the center. Every chart in the Keepsake’ Calendar has arrows that indicate the horizontal and vertical centers. With your finger, trace along the grid to the point where the two centers meet. Compare a symbol at the center of the chart to the key and choose which floss color to stitch first. To find the center of the fabric, fold it into quarters and finger-crease. Cut the floss into 15" lengdis and separate all six strands. Recombine the strands as indicated in the project instructions and thread them into a blunr-tip needle.
Basic Cross-Stitch
Make one cross-stitch for each symbol on the chart.
For horizontal rows, stitch the first diagonal of each stitch in the row. Work back across the row, completing each stitch. On most of the linen and evenweave fabrics, work the stitches over two threads as shown in the diagram. On Aida cloth, each stitch should cover one square. You also can work cross-stitches in the reverse direction. Remember to embroider the stitches uniformly— that is, always work the top half of each stitch in rhe same direction.
To Secure Thread at the Beginning
The most common way to secure the beginning tail of the thread is to hold it under the first four or five stitches.
Quarter and Three-Quarter Cross-Stitches
To obtain rounded shapes in a design, use quarter and
To Secure Thread at the End
To finish, slip the threaded needle under previously stitched
threads on the wrong side of the fabric for four or five stitches,
weaving the thread back and forth a few times. Clip the thread.
Half Cross-Stitches
They are usually indicated as a pair of small symbols on
the chan. E3
Backstitches
Backstitches define and outline the shapes of a design. For most projects, backstitches require only one strand of floss.
three-quarter cross-sritches. On linen and evenweave fabrics, a quarter cross-stitch will extend from the corner to the center intersection of threads. To make quarter cross-stitches on Aida cloth, estimate the center of the square. Three-quarter cross-sritches combine a quarter cross-stitch with a half cross-stitch. Both stitches may slant in any direction. Quarter cross-stitches are indicated with one small symbol. Q Three-quarter cross-sritches are indicated with three small symbols on the chart. E3
French Knot
Bring the threaded needle through the fabric and wrap the floss around the needle as shown. Tighten the twists and return die needle through the fabric at the same place. The floss will slide through the wrapped thread to make die knot.
