The year has flown by. It seems like only yesterday that we wrapped up our Christmas baubles…and already the diyas and torans are out! Soon, the pumpkins will take their place, and the kids will be planning Halloween gigs. Come to think of it, as fast as we’ve gone through the past few months, they have also been packed with both action and adrenalin. With day-to-day life becoming a little less mindful of our virulent miscreant, everything seems to be happening suddenly and almost all at once. And the best part is, for once, no one’s complaining! Everyone’s grateful for the piling up of work, the new assignments, the difficult pitches and whatever other professional challenges that we’d all have otherwise wrinkled our noses at. No? If you don’t already know this about me, let me quickly tell you that I’m an eternal optimist and a happiness junkie. According to me, this attitude of gratitude is the most befitting gift that the last few years of lockdown capers have given this world. And I think it’s the perfect note to kick-start the festivities on! With this issue, my team and I are wrapping you in the happiest warmth of the season, wishing you all a very, very happy festive season and year end! Le Jardin Escape by Creatomy is well known for its mindfully created, handcrafted products with modern-day aesthetics and one-of-a-kind designs. Bringing together their resources to design a collection that is an ode to their craftsmanship, the brand has unveiled its new capsule collection of furniture pieces known as Le Jardin. This collection is inspired by the tiny protagonists nestled in the burrows of a delightfully quaint garden. These creatures are crucial players and help maintain the ecological balance of this delicate ecosystem. Designed to encompass and showcase the creative drive and technical nesse of the brand, Le Jardin is made in majestic proportions out of solid mahogany wood, eleven components cut by the ve-axis CNC machine and assembled and nished by hand, revealing a throne painted deep black inspired by the snake, SERPENTINE. Ever present and the crowd favourite, CONEJO, meaning rabbit, inspired the three-seater and single-seater sofa. Rabbit ears fashioned out of solid beech wood and stained indigo adorn the back of the seats.Boucle fabric and velvet were used to mimic the smooth and soft torsos and provide a beautifully tactile experience. Inspired by the friendly garden cat, it is an effortless moulded solid Beech wood chair, GATO, that is a brilliant example of modern woodworking. Stained in indigo and with delicate brass inlays that represent characteristic markings adorn our furry friends, the chair is a pleasure to sit on and can bring instant glamour and charm to any interior setting. Twig inspired the dining table, RAMITA. The table with the delicate glass top offset by the lazy marble Susan and the moulded solid wood and metal base all stained to Ebony pairs exquisitely with our delicate Gato chairs. Horses were the muse for these beautiful and statement crockery units, CABALLO. With long stylish solid beech wood legs and delicate details, the unit can easily be incorporated into any dining room layout giving your crockery and glassware the pomp and splendour it deserves. The tortoise was the perfect character to design the structure of this bench, TORTUGA.The solid beech wood base of the bench was designed to mimic the strength and backbone of the tortoise shell holding together the delicately upholstered seat. Current landscaping trends implemented in this project are xeriscaping and planting indigenous species. HOME KUNAL MANIAR IMAGE KAILASH MISTRY Principal Architect, Kunal Maniar and Associates Holding degrees in horticulture and landscape architecture, this University of Melbourne graduate established his practice, Kunal Maniar and Associates in 2002. Environmental-conscious solutions with a strong flavour of tropical wilderness form the ethos of Kunal’s practice. Over two decades, the South Mumbai-based firm has executed a wide spectrum of work, ranging from luxury hospitality projects, city houses and cosy weekend homes among others. Their esteemed clientele includes prominent personalities such as the Ambanis’, Shah Rukh Khan, and Mahendra Singh Dhoni among others. Enormous calathea lutea leaves act as a filler between the wooden gazebo and the pavilion, lending a sense of intimacy to the space. Every element of this landscape has thoughtfully been executed by Kunal along with his valuable team members, Aayushi Pendhari, Pandurang Patil and Tejas Kathe.
S prawled over two acres, this landscape haven in Alibag takes inspiration from the ideals of tropical living. Landlocked, there was nothing interesting about the immediate surroundings, offering Kunal Maniar the challenge of forging a symbiotic relationship between the landscape and the home, a feat he took on excitedly. With the architecture being moulded by Kersi Kapadia and the interior design being helmed by Kavita Trivedi, this house is constructed in the heart of the property. Divided into two halves, organically giving way to a straightforward layout, it has a front and back garden, both planned with individualistic themes, plush with tropical planting of mostly native species. “When I first saw the property, I knew I would modify the existing hardscape, such as the jarring sharp-edged tarred driveway. We changed it to gravel, which reduced the sharpness, and made the path blend seamlessly with the softscape,” says Kunal about a key design element. An old water tower was refurbished, giving it a new identity. This provides viewers a vantage point from which they can observe the entire property. A curtain of ivy crawling up the towering structure lends it the charm of an old Bavarian castle. Greeting visitors with a riot of colours, the driveway is lined with a vibrant palette of mixed plantations, from where they can see a sun-kissed lawn interspersed with native trees. Gradually leaving the colour behind, a sanctum of sweet-scented white flowers encompasses the back garden. Mature indigenous frangipanis stand tall around the pool, providing shade to the jacuzzi. A day bed is tucked on the side to form an open lounge area, while a gigantic plant envelopes the entire pavilion. To combat the harsh Alibag sun, sufficient shaded spots that could be enjoyed in any weather have been incorporated. Water scarcity, another geographical challenge was sensitively tackled by maximising permeable spaces. When talking about the planning perspective of the bungalow, Kunal said, “Flat-roof terraces at different levels with seating areas awarded unscathed vistas of the surrounding gardens, which made me focus on the bird’s eye view whilst planning their landscape, owing to the fact that these views would be seen a lot from above.” While the whole property is a showstopper, the frangipani trees win hands down. Minimising challenges by turning constraints into opportunities, Kunal has shown exemplary landscape architecture expertise in Amit Sabharwal and Gayatri Khanna Sabharwal’s holiday home. KAVEESHA SHAH Partner and Lead Interiors Designer, Studio Saransh F Studio Saransh is an architectural partnership studio based in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, operating in the fields of architecture, planning and interior design. The studio was founded in 1994 by Manish and Malini Doshi, both architects, and alumni of CEPT University. Kaveesha Shah joins this iconic atelier as Partner and Lead Interiors Designer. This project has been spearheaded by Kaveesha and reflects her strong knowledge of everything design! or the homeowners of this 2,000sqft home in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, the builder’s apartment was barely cutting it. It wasn’t enough. On the other hand, Kaveesha Shah was excited about taking up this project as she appreciated the elements already present and looked forward to elaborating on a design expression that was personal to the family. “This apartment belongs to a family of six across different age groups. This meant we had the opportunity to create unique and relatable zones for each of them. The process, to make the house relevant for each person and for all of them as a family, was an exciting prospect.” The first thing she did was conduct an extensive recon on the existing elements. Once she understood the foundation, Kaveesha and her team planned a design roadmap that would build on these inherent attributes while pushing the boundary on what the residents thought possible. Since the apartment did not call for any major spatial reconfiguration, the focus rested on transforming the interiors. Kaveesha introduced a spectrum of finishes that introduced a sensorial and effervescent touch. The house is finished in colours of sand with a stucco texture on the walls, sandstone panels and oak and teakwood furniture along with a touch of green marble to bring a contrast to the palette. Kavessha adds, “The sand coloured hues continue into the each of the four bedrooms, accompanied with an element, material and colour that emphasises its relationship with the occupant of the room.” Contoured forms and curved edges introduce a gentle dimension to this subdued colour tone, further elevating the overall simple yet luxurious hush. Designed to have a monolithic appearance, this home is unified in its stated use of colour and Avant-garde applications for various surface treatments. Kaveesha ensures an equal profusion of light throughout the house, through means of custom-designed light fixtures that direct and reflect light wonderfully against the overall sandstone colour tones. HOME Due to extensive leakage and plumbing issues, this 35-year-old villa was not in use. During the pandemic, the owners addressed these issues so they could use it as a holiday home. First, we sorted the civil concerns, after which we worked on transforming the interiors. —Priyanka Shah, Interior Stylist A t the heart of this project was Priyanka Shah’s resolve of “wanting it to just feel light”. As one of the few stand-alone villas, located by the Mumbai-Pune expressway in Lonavala, the interiors stylist saw this as an opportunity to champion her unique style philosophy and transform a derelict 35-year-old villa into an iconic addition to the scenic views of the valley. The vistas aside, Priyanka had an uphill task on her hands. “Located on an expansive one-acre plot of land, this property was in a derelict state. The reason being, the owners were facing a severe leakage and plumbing issue and as a result of which, they did not use it as much as they would have liked to. During the pandemic, they wanted to change this situation and tasked me with the transformation. Before going a step further in the refurbishing process, I had to rectify all their concerns.” The ‘before’ of the home was a dull space that looks inwards as opposed to enjoying the views and expanse of the land. Priyanka’s plan of action hinged on making the villa first and foremost a functional holiday home. She included ensuite bath areas in all the bedrooms, painted the entire expanse of the interiors a bright and crisp white, and either refurbished pieces of furniture that would lend themselves to the style statement or then sourced new designs. “I consciously stayed away from materials that would weather in the harsh climate of Lonavala. Hence, we went for a lot of glass and metal designs.” Having said that, Priyanka did not want shiny surfaces to take away from the vintage style sensibility she envisioned, hence, she incorporated antique copper and iron in natural-looking finishes, and lots of organic and natural fabrics and textiles, she enlisted the charm of patterns that were vibrant and cheerful, and included all kinds of texture, from fine linen and weaves to handmade chunky knits. This home is a firm nod to vintage meets modern and is a joyful celebration! OCTOBER - NOVEMBER 2022 GOODHOMES 107
