Celeberrimae Novi Testament! editionis manualis auctor D. Eber-
coepisset curare Veteris Testament! Graeci quodvocaturSept.ua-
grata editionem manualem apudSodetatemBiblicam Stuttgartiensem,
annos praepositus operi a Societate Scientiarum Gottingensi versioni
copia iam collecta imaginum photographicarum, quibus codices
bavit loco editionis maioris iam minorem editionem criticam eden-
dam. Huius editionis, quoniam anni bellum sequentes abundabant
impedimentis, anno 1922 demum iussu eiusdem congregationis libellus
speciminis loco in lucem prodiit: „Das Buch Huth griechisch, als
Probp einer kritischen Handausgabe der Septuaginta herausgegeben
von Alfred Rahlfs11. Dcinde suscepi Genesin librum tractandum, qui
prodiit 1926 inscriptus: „Septuaginta Societatis Scientiarum Got-
aedibus societatis Biblicae Stuttgartiensis.
initio feliciter venisset, quarta circiter parte vendita a paucis
formae qua erat liber Genesis continuare, Et quoniam eodem tem-
pore Societas Scientiarum Gottingensis denuo magnam editionem
perficere statuit, Societas Biblica autem prius consilium editionis
minoris redintegravit, ego probante Societate Scientiarum professus
sum me velle editionem minorem curare tribus antiquissimis testibus
graccis pro fundamento sumptis. Itaque editionibus niinore manuali
decimam maioris operis in lucem protulerunt. Qua editione maiore
omnes quicunque undique fontes inveniri possunt adhibentur. Editio

fuit sub Ptolemaeo II Philadelpho (annis a. Chr. n, 285—247), pars
Testamen turn Vetus translatum. Post Pentateuchum ceteri libri
respiciens H. St. J. Thackeray, A grammar of the О. T. in Greek I
(1909) p. 12 16 librorum et partium librorum classes versionis
LXX constituit.
alterius a. Chr. n. saeculi in linguam graecam conversum exstabat,
Christum saeculum, qua aetate codices nostri antiquissimi exarati
2. Versio LXX ab ludaeis effecta apud ludaeos initio maxima
fuit auctoritate. Illa quidem epistula Aristeae cognoscimus ver-
sionem Pentateuchi a counnuni iudaico Alexandrine publice pro-
1 cf. Das Buch Bath griechisch, hsg. von A. Bahlfs (Stuttg. 1922), p. 6—14

sacros usu retinerent, et q»i non ludaei erant ipsi quoque hos libros
explorare possent.
Eadem res posterior iidei Christianae propagation adiuvit.
Nani Christiani initio nt ludaei Vetus Testamentum pro libro sacro
кат’ e5oXnv habebant, et praedicatores fidei Christianae, ubicunque
notitia erat Veteris Testament!, facile habebant exordium. Ita
in conimunibus iudaicis dispersis maior pars orta est communiuni
Cliristianorum, et versio LXX iani omnibus locis divulgata et nota
a Christianis simpliciter recepta est libri sacri ecclesiae loco.
3. Sed postquam ecclesia Christiana versionem LXX recepit,
ludaei brevi ab ea alienati sunt. Quod effectum videtur his prae-
cipue causis.
a) Christiani saepe cum ludaeis disputantes nonnunquam locos
afferebant, quos ludaei arguinento esse negabant. Accusabantur
adversiis Indaeos controversiis repetita vocis noSp Is* 7 14 per
(hebr. 96) io ad 6 кЬрю$ epaOiXeooev additum dno £6Xou i. e. ex
p. (’hr. ii. saeculo a viris doctis ludaeis definitos et constitutes
esse fere constat. A tali sanctione versio LXX, orta aetate priore
necdum tarn severis normis adstricta, inultis in rebus aliena erat;
t ) Ineunte saeculo p, Chr. n. altero ii iudaici librorum sacroruin
inteipictes docti auctore ARiba praevaluerunt, qni unam quamque

iam probari potuisse versionem LXX multis locis adeo liberam quis

4. Propterea ludaei illius aetatis novam Veteris Testament! ver-

Cuius rei optimum exemplum ipse primus Bibliorum versus.

gewesen ware, musste jene groBe Ausgabe vorianfig zuriickgestellt
sche Ausgabe erscheinen sollte.
griechischen Zeugen bereit erklarte.

Alten Testaments ins Griechische. Zuerst, nach der Erzahlung des
Aristeasbriefes unter Ptolemaios II. Philadelphos (285.-— 247 v. Chr.),
A grammar of the О. T. in Greek I (1909), S. 12—16 die Biicher
Jahrh. v.
anfangs in hohem Ansehen gestanden.

Ende des I. Jahrh. n.

(lurch so feste Normen gebundeneu Zeit stamm ende LXX ent-
ischen Text voraus.
sondern „Hauptsache, Sunime14 o. a. bedeutete.

besonderes griechisches Wort wiederzugeben, ffuv tov obpavbv Kai
cruv Trjv ynv.
Andere charakteristische Beispiele ftir Aquilas Ubersetzungs-
1, S. 240 Anm. 2 zusammengestellt. Ich habe dort gezeigt, wie
Aquila verschiedene Ableitungen derselben hebraischen Wurzel,
dpapTia, aber KiOH dpdpTrjpa, 3) ph dKpipaopo^ aber ПрП dKpipcia,
4) ПП’ dpa, aber Hn? opoO, 5) ЩЯВ” oder ny-WFl owinpia,' aber Pl#
(jwTfjpiov, 6) 3 tb<;, aber ta 6poiw^ oder брою^, 7) OKavbaXov,
wiedergegeben (so in Nr. 1. 4. 6—9).

staben mit "ИТ und ПП1 iibereinstimmen und dqou auf denselben
Buchstaben ausgeht wie ПП1 (u = 1).
Aquilas Bibeliibersetzung muBte ftir Nichtjuden manchmal ganz
tiber Sonderbarkeiten wie ovv tov oupavbv ксп ouv Tfjv fqv lustig
macht.
Theodotion lieferte keine ganz ueue Ubersetzung, sondeni

In Is. 25 8 hatte die LXX ПИЙ men рЬэ durch

В. Kon. I 2 46—3i
beseitigt; schon unsere aitesten griechischen Handschriften BSA
haben den Zusatz ало
ernsteste Studium gewidmet. In seinem beriihmten Riesenwerke,
der „Hexapla11, die er etwa im 4. Jahrzehnt des III. Jahrh. n. Chr.

Wo sie etwas bot, was
0. a.) bezeichnet.
Ubersetzungen) in Ubereinstim-
nischen Philologie entlehnte (s. Field, Origenis Hexaplorum quae
supersunt I, S. LII f.).
i) Siehe meine Septuaginta-Stndien 1 (1904), S. 75.

hellenistische Formen dor LXX wie ^Xdpooav, enrav, то ёХеод durch
gangenenTheologen und Kirchenmanner eine wichtige Rolle gespielt;
leicht weiter verbreiten konnte.

graben gelegen hatte, weiter verbreitet. Um 400 n. Chr. herrschte
er nach Hieronymus in Palastina.

Editor’s Preface
Eberhard Nestle, D. D., editor of the well-known Stuttgart Pocket
Edition of the Greek New Testament, began just before the outbreak
of the Great War, at the request of the Wurttemberg Bible Society,
to prepare, a pocket edition of the Greek Old Testament (Septua-
gint) as well. His death in 1913, however, prevented this object
from being fulfilled. In order to preserve a specimen of E. Nestle’s
work, his unfinished edition of the Book of Jeremiah, with parallel
Greek and Hebrew texts, was rounded off and published by his son,
Studienrat Erwin Nestle, D. D. Ph. D., in collaboration with Pastor
Johannes Dahse. The Wurttemberg Bible Society did not, however,
abandon the idea of publishing a pocket edition of the Septuagint,
but sought for an additional editor. Thus it came about that in the
last year of tbeWar, 1917 to 1918, I agreed to take over the task of
editing this pocket edition. By then I had already for a long time
heen engaged in Septuagint research, having been for nearly ten
years Director of studies in the Septuagint at the “Gesellschaft der
Wissenschaften” at Gdttingen. While occupying this position, I had
the task of producing a large critical edition of the Septuagint. As
it was, however, impossible, owing to the outbreak of the Great
War, to make the necessary completions to the collection of photo-
graphs of the Manuscripts, the editing of this large work had to
be temporarily postponed. Hence, the idea of producing a small
critical edition instead of the larger one found the approval of the
Gottingen Septuagint Commission. The post-war period brought all
kinds of obstacles in its train, and it was not until 1922 that a specimen
section of this small edition was published, by commission of the De-
partment of Septuagint Research: “Das Buch Ruth griechisch,
After this had appeared, I set to work
upon the preparation of an edition of Genesis, which was published
in 1926 under the title of “Septuaginta Societatis Scientiarum Got-
tingensis auctoritate edidit Alfred Rahlfs”. This volume, as well as
the edition of Ruth, was published by the Wurttemberg Bible Society’s
Press. The considerations which had to be taken into account in the
textual criticism of Genesis proved entirely different from those concer-
ning Ruth, and the critical apparatus extended further in the case of
the former than in that of the latter. Thus the edition of Genesis assu-
med a form midway between that of a pocket edition and that of the
larger edition which had been previously proposed. There was at first
a ready sale for this edition of Genesis, but it happened that, when
only about a quarter of the edition had been disposed of, its sale came
to a standstill. Consequently, when the manuscript of the Psalms,
which should have come next in order of publication, was nearing
completion, the Bible Society declared that future issues could not
be permitted to assume as full a form as that of the edition of Gene-
sis. At the same time, the “Gesellschaft der Wissenschaften” once
more gave consideration to the possibility of the publication of the
larger edition. As a consequence of this, the Bible Society resumed
its original plan of publishing a small pocket edition Subject to the
approval of the “Gesellschaft der Wissenschaften”, I declared my-
self willing to prepare a pocket edition on the textual basis of the
three oldest Greek manuscripts. Thus the scheme was abandoned
which had for a time been contemplated, of combining the pocket
edition with the larger edition. Thereupon the Gottingen firm of
Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht undertook the publication of the larger
edition. In 1930—1931 they published my edition of the Psalter,
which was originally intended for publication by the Bible Society,
but which had, meanwhile, been still further enlarged, and now
appeared as Part X of the big work. This full edition is designed
for detailed study, and is intended to cover all available material.
The pocket edition confines itself, in the main, to the three most
important manuscripts, B, S, and A, and refers only incidentally and
where it seems needful to other material. The aim of this work is
to provide clergy and students with a reliable edition of the Septua-
gint at a moderate price, and thus to supply an important compan-
ion and aid to the study not only of the Old Testament, hut also of
the New Testament. It is шу hope that this volume may adequately
fulfil its purpose.
Alfred Rahlfs. D. D. Ph. D.
History of the Septuagint Text1
1. The Septuagint is the ancient Jewish translation of the Old
Testament into Greek. The Pentateuch, the earliest and the
fundamental part of the Old Testament Canon, was translated
first of all, and, according to the Letter of Aristeas, this took place
during the rule of Philadelphus (285—247 В. C.). The story is told
that this translation was made in Alexandria hy 70 — or to be
more accurate 72 — Jewish scholars; hence it received the name
of “Septuagint” (LXX). This title, though it originally applied
only to the translation of the Pentateuch, was eventually trans-
ferred to the whole of the Old Testament. The translation of the
Pentateuch was followed by that of the other books. The trans-
lation of these latter was evidently the work of a great number
of different hands. This we know, in the first place, from the
variations in rendering, which range from the most literal to the
most free, and in the second place from the differences in the
Greek style which led H. St. J. Thackeray (A Grammar of the О. T.
in Greek Vol I[1909],pp. 12 —16) to make classifications of the books
and sections of books in the LXX. As the Prologue to the Book
of Ecclesiasticus shows, there was in existence towards the end
of the 2nd century В. C. a Greek translation of the whole, or at
least of the essential parts, of the О. T. There is no reason for
us to douht that the LXX text of that period was in general
agreement with our present-day LXX text.
Still, it could only he accounted a matter of general agreement.
As far as details were concerned, it may well be that several
kinds of alterations have taken place. For the LXX went through
an eventful history from the time of its origin up to the 4lb
century A.D., when our most ancient complete manuscripts were
produced From a date previous to the 4th century A. D. we only
possess fragments, but the history of the LXX before that cen-
tury cannot but have had a lasting influence upon our MSS.
1 See “Das Buch Ruth griechisch, hsg. von A. Rahlfs" (Stuttgart1922), pp. 6—14;
and “Septuaginta ed A. Rahlfs: 1. Genesis" (Stuttgart 1926), pp. 7—15.
2i The LXX was a Jewish work, and was at first held by tbe
Jews in high esteem. According to the Letter of Aristeas^ thb
translation of the Pentateuch was accorded official recognition by
the Jewish Community in Alexandria, and Jewish writers such as
Philo and Josephus used it preferably, if not exclusively. The
LXX proved of supreme importance in the work of the preser-
vation and expansion of Judaism. The Jews who, in the Dispersion,
dwelt far from the land of their fathers, came to he less and less
acquainted with Hebrew, yet the LXX caused them to remain
continuously faithful to the Law and to the other Sacred Scrip-
tures, while it also enabled those who were not Jews to study
these writings.
The LXX, in addition, paved the way for later Christian missions.
For in the first days of Christianity the Old Testament was the
Holy Scripture кат* tgo'xflv for the Christians, just as it was
for the Jews, and the Christian missionaries were ahle to dis-
cover a ready point of contact wherever there had already
spread a knowledge of the Old Testament. Thus it came about
that the earliest Christian communities were formed to a large
extent from Jews of the Dispersion, while the LXX, being already
everywhere wide-spread and well-known, was simply adopted hy the
Christians as the Church’s Bible.
3. The Jews became alienated from the LXX a short time
after its adoption by the Christian Church. The following circum-
stances appear especially to have contributed to this:
(a) In the frequent disputations that took place between the
Jews and the Christians, the latter often made quotations from the
LXX, which the former could not regard as conclusive. These
were, in part, concerned with inaccurate translations, of which a
well-known example is the rendering of Is. VII. u. by napO£vo$(
which has been ever-recurring in all polemical writings against
the Jews. The Christians justifiably maintained that this rendering
originated from the old Jewish translators themselves, whereas
the Jews with equal justification rejected it as being inaccurate.
The points at issue were, however, in part, a mere matter of
Christian additions, introduced into the LXX merely by the naive
lack of discrimination shown by the early Christians, as was, for
instance, the case with regard to Ps. XCV. io. (Ps. XCVI, 10. in
Hebrew), in which d кирюд ^aoiXeuaev was supplemented by dnd
EuXou. These words “From the Cross” were regarded by Justin
Martyr as so evidently belonging to the original text of the Bible,
that he was able, in all sincerity, to accuse the Jews of having
maliciously expunged them.1
(b) There is every likelihood that, towards the end of the first
century A. D., the Text and Canon of the Old Testament were
definitely fixed by the Jewish scholars in Palestine. The LXX,
which was produced in an earlier and less rigidly regulated period,
did not in many points conform to so strict a ruling. It included
books and portions of books which did not belong to the Palestinian
Canon, and which sometimes also assumed a different Hebrew text.
As the rulings which at that time prevailed in Palestine, came
to be accepted as determinative for the whole of the Dispersion,
the LXX naturally lost its former authority.
(c) Owing to the influence of Akiba, in the first thirty or so
years of the 2nd century A. D., there became predominant a school
of Rabbinic interpretation which laid emphasis upon every letter
of the sacred text, and which drew the most far-fetched and
often the most singular conclusions from the most unimportant
of details. In this context we need only mention one instance of
Akiba’s methods; and this only because we shall have cause to
refer to it again later. He interpreted the accusative particle nt?
appearing in Genesis 1.1. in front of cwn and as meaning
“with”. Thence he inferred that God created “along with the
heaven and the earth” other things as well, namely, with the
heaven the sun, the moon, and the constellations, and with the
earth trees, plants, and the Garden of Eden1 2. It is quite evident
that this type of interpretation, adhering firmly, as it does, to
every single letter, could not rest satisfied with such a manifestly
free translation as the Septuagint.
4. As a result, the Judaism of this period fashioned an entirely
new Greek translation of the Old Testament. Aquila, a Greek
proselyte and a disciple of Akiba, rendered every detail of the
sacred Text as precisely as possible into Greek, and he did not
shrink from perpetrating the most appalling outrages to the whole
essence of the Greek language.

We are provided in the very first verse of the Bible with a classical
example of his translating. The LXX had rendered it into correct
and good Greek by Sv dpXrj enoir) O€v 6 Beds tov oupavov xai xfiv
yfjv. This translation was, however, very far from being accurate
enough for Aquila’s tastes. The etymology of the Hebrew nWK“i
did not find expression in dpxn; Aquila, however, aimed at pro-
viding a rendering of all Hebrew derivatives which should be
accurate, even in regard to etymology. He therefore translated
FPt^K"! as a derivative of by xetpaXatov, being a derivative
of xetpaXrj. It did not matter that the Greek word xetpaXaiov did
not mean “Beginning” but “Chief point” or “Sum” etc. Neither
was Aquila able to use the classical Greek word 6to(t](T€v; for
he used different renderings in Greek for different Hebrew words,
and, consequently, noteiv being to him the equivalent of rwp, he
sought for another translation for kid, and this he found in xTiZetv,
a word already frequently used in the LXX to render №!□. The
next word in the LXX was d Beds = C’Dt’N; Aquila omitted the
article, his reason being that it was not there in the Hebrew
text1. Finally, there came in the LXX the words tov oupavov xai
Trjv Tfiv; Aquila, in order to have a special Greek rendering even
for ПК, wrote abv tov oupavov xai ouv Trjv Tfiv. At this point he
was plainly influenced by his teacher Akiba, who, as has been
mentioned above, had taken пк in this context as meaning “with”.
All the same, in order to contradict previous inaccurate statements
of the fact, it needs emphasising that Aquila does not in every
case render пк by cruv, but only on occasions when in the Hebrew
text nx is followed by the article; should, however, a Hebrew
word have no article preceding it, as, for example, in the case
of a status constructs, or of a proper name, then Aquila trans-
lates пк by the Greek article.i 2
I have put together other characteristic examples of Aquila’s art
of translation in the Mitteilungen des Septuaginta-Unternehmens I,
p. 240 Note 2. There I have shown how Aquila has, whenever it
has been possible, rendered different derivatives of the same Hebrew
root, even though entirely synonymous in meaning, by different
i d used formerly to be regarded as tbe correct reading given by
Aquila The article, however, is rightly omitted in a recently discovered Papyrus

but рПЗ Ейкаюу, (9) fl? товара or теХеитаюу,
Two principles appear, in these instances,
to have played an especially prominent part in the choice of Greek
equivalents: (1) the gender of the Hebrew words was reproduced
in Greek; Greek masculine and neuter both corresponding to the
Hebrew masculine (as in Nos 2, 3, 5, 8, 10 above). (2) a lengthier
Hebrew word was rendered by a correspondingly long Greek word
(as in №B 1, 4, 6 — 9). The crowning-point of the translator’s
ingenuity is, however, reached in No. 4, where аца and dpou
correspond completely with пгт and ПГТ respectively, even with
regard to the number of letters, and, moreover, бцои ends with
the same letter as ПГТ (u = i). — The extraordinary consistency
with which he made these distinctions, earns our genuine admiration.
Aquila must have possessed not only a will of iron, but also an
incredible memory, as is demonstrated by the way in which he
regularly provided a uniform rendering for each Hebrew word as
it occurred. But he may perhaps, before he began his translations,
have drawn up a Hebrew-Greek Glossary, in which he fixed,
according to a complete system, the Greek translation for every
Hebrew word.1
Aquila’s translation of the Bible must on occasions have proved
altogether incomprehensible to Non-Jews, and it is not to be
wondered at that Jerome made fun of peculiarities such as
ouv tov oupavov Kai cruv if]v Tfjv. The Jews, however, held this
translation in the highest esteem, and they came to use it for
centuries, employing it even in their religious services. It was
not, indeed, until it was required of all Jewish Communities
throughout the length and breadth of the Byzantine Empire, that
they should study the original Hebrew text, that Aquila’s trans-
lation lost its authority, and consequently there came a time

Unternehmens 1 pp.240ff.
when all that remained of it were a number of rather meagre
fragments.
5. Soon after Aquila, and also in the course of the 2nd century
A. D.j two other Greek translations were produced, those of Theo-
dotion and of Symmachus.
Theodotion did not provide an entirely new translation, but,
taking the LXX as his basis, he corrected it according to the
original text. I have dealt with two passages of his work in my
essay “Ober Theodotion-Lesarten im N.T. und Aquila-Lesarten
bei Justin” (Zeitschrift /. d. neutest. Wissenschaft 20 [1921],
pp. 182—199), in order to investigate whether the New Testament
writers, as has been repeatedly suggested, used Theodotion’s
translation, or rather that of an “original Theodotion1. As these
two passages may be taken as typical of his method, I will
make reference to them here. In Is. XXV. s. the LXX had rendered
ГШЙ by Korremev d Oavorro^ iaxucra?. Theodotion took over
6 0avaTO<j without change, and merely replaced the all
too inaccurate LXX translation of НЛЛ by veucos. In Zech. XII. io.
the LXX had rendered npl Tii’K ПК Йк ЮОП1 by ка! 6ripX&povrai
тгро$ pt av0’ dbv KaTwpxrio'avTo; Theodotion retained ка! bripX&povTat
irpocj pt, but replaced 6v0’ div катшрхп<кп/то, which was supported
by another Hebrew Text (Tlpn instead of Hpl) by ov ^екеутрстау.
As to veiKo<j in the first passage, 1 Cor. XV. 54. appears to be in
harmony with Theodotion and also John XIX. 37. with Sv ^€K^VTq(Tav
in the 2nd passage. This conformity will not, however, as I have
pointed out, justify the conclusion that there had existed an original
Theodotion older than Paul and John.
Symmachus provided an entirely new translation of the О. T.
In common with all later translators he kept closely to the Hebrew
text. He was, however, anxious to make his translation good Greek,
and this is illustrated, among other instances, by his preference
for participial constructions, by which he turned the Hebrew main
clauses into subordinate clauses, as, for example, in 1 Kings II. 46—in. 1.

Some further translations were made of single books of the
О. T. Of these later translations there are preserved for us only
fragments, and that practically exclusively through the agency
of Origen’s Hexapla, which we must now consider.
6. All this painstaking work upon the text of the О. T. has had
a powerful influence upon the Christian Church, and particularly
so, subsequent to the foundation of the Christian School in
Alexandria. The Christian additions were now removed from
the text of the Bible. Our oldest Greek Manuscripts, B, S, and A,
had already dispensed with the addition of diro SuXou to Ps. XCV.io,
an addition which is still preserved only in the Coptic and Latin
transmissions.1
But, above all, Origen, the greatest scholar of the Alexandrian
School, had devoted himself to the most intensive study imagi-
nable of the O.T. text. In his famous and voluminous work, the
Hexapla, which he produced in Palestine about the 4th decade
of the 3rd century A. D.,1 2 he placed side by side in 6 parallel
columns the original О. T. in Hebrew characters, and in Greek tran-
scription, together with the 4 Greek translations. It is clear from
the very arrangement of the Hexapla that to him, being a scholar,
not the LXX, but the original text was ultimately the primary
authority, for he put the original text first, and then had next
to it the translations of Aquila and of Symmachus, since they fur-
nished the most accurate renderings of the original text. The LXX
followed next, and then Theodotion as a revised version of it. The
same method is discernible in the way in which Origen adapted
the LXX to bring it into line with the original text. In order to
indicate matter in the LXX, which did not appear in the original
text, he employed obelisks (—, -r), symbols that were used
in textual criticism by the Alexandrian Philologists, and especially
in dealing with Homer, in order to brand a passage as spurious.
Origen also made use of the obelisk in this same sense, for he
declares in his commentary.on Matthew (Opera ed. Delarue HI
672) that he has marked with an obelisk those words which were
not in the Hebrew, since "Ae did not dare to erase them entirely”.
This is an obvious indication that he would have expunged them
completely, had he been willing to be absolutely consistent.3 Con-
versely, Origen, as he himself says in the same passage, added

3 Bee my Septuaginta-Studien 1 (1904). p. 75. Ibid. pp. 73f. Here I have
shown that, despite this statement of his, Origen repeatedly drew the logical
conclusion and entirely deleted that which was superfluous in the LXX.
“from out of the other editions (i. e. translations) in agreement
with the Hebrew11 whatever was missing from the LXX, charac*
tensing it with an asterisk (ж), a symbol which he likewise
borrowed from Alexandrian philology, (cf. Field, Origenis Hexa-
piorum quae supersuntl, p. UI f) But, besides these, in many
passages Origen, without any indication, made further alterations
to the LXX after the pattern of the original text and the later
translations that were in agreement with it. Above all, he cor*
rected in this way the forms of proper names, for which he had
had from an early date an especial interest.1 He also made cor-
rections in the LXX order of words, in so far as it showed any
important departure from the Hebrew order; this latter alteration
had already, as a matter of fact, been necessitated, since he in-
tended that words that were on the same line of each of the в
columns, should correspond one with another, while every line con-
tained, however, on the average only about 1—2 Words in both
the Hebrew columns, and 2—3 words in the four Greek columns.1 2
Origen’s Hexapla was designed only for the use of scholars. He
intended, as he himself said in his letter to Julius Africanus, that
it should serve, in particular, as armour for the Christian contro-
versialist in his conflict with the Jews, who were continuously
invoking their Hebrew О. T., and pouring ridicule upon their oppo-
nents’ manoeuvres with the LXX. The object of the Hexapla was
thus to enable the Christians to defeat the Jews with their own
weapons and win their respect.
On the other hand, however, where it was a matter of the use of
the Old Testament in church, it was Origen’s wish that the Church
should retain the traditional LXX text. In justification of this he
quoted the saying, “Remove not the ancient landmark which thy
fathers have set".3 It happened also that the Hexapla and the
Tetrapla (with the two Hebrew columns omitted) were prevented
by their gigantic size from gaining any wider circulation, and hence
they exercised, for the time being, no effective influence upon the
formation of the Bible Text.

7. Not long after Origen, and presumably during the last
quarter of the 3rd century A. D., a similar revision of the LXX
was made by the presbyter Lucian, who died a martyr’s death
on Jan. 7th- 312, and who was the founder of the Exegetical
School at Antioch. Sometimes Lucian’s revision, in a similar way
to that of Origen, followed the original text and the later trans-
lations. Lucian, however, very frequently worked with the greatest
freedom upon the LXX, and from all sorts of grammatical and
stylistic views. For instance, acting under the influence of the
atticising movement of the time, he replaced the hellenistic forms
of the LXX such as &d0ooav, einav, то ёЛео? by the attic £Xapov,
dnov, 6 £Xeo$.
In contrast to Origen, whose. LXX recension sought merely to
serve a scholarly and scientific purpose, Lucian apparently at
the outset designed his recension for practical ends; and, in-
deed, from all appearances, his rendering soon received wide cir-
culation. In effecting this, an important part was played by the
leading theologians and clergy of the Antiochene Exegetical School.
Through them Lucian’s recension reached Constantinople, the capi-
tal of the Homan Empire in the East, and from there it could
readily secure a wider circulation. According to the wellknown
statement of Jerome, this version was by 400 A. D. predominant
in the whole area from Antioch to Constantinople. As regards
Psalter and New Testament alike, the Lucian text managed in time
to supersede all other text-forms.1
8. The success of the Antiochene School, however, if my view
be correct, had its influence upon Palestine, and evoked similar
endeavours which are most probably at the same time to be dee-
med reactions against Antioch. In Palestine, at the beginning of
the 4th century A. D., Pamphilus, who died a martyr’s death
in 309, founder of a theological school and of a famous library
in Caesarea and also an enthusiastic admirer of Origen, dug
out the latter’s LXX text and in collaboration with his pupil,
Eusebius, the celebrated Church Historian, published it in
separate form. This was all presumably done in conscious oppo-
sition to Antioch, and with the intention of creating general
acceptance for this text. By this means Origen’s LXX text was
for the first, time given a wider circulation, having hitherto lain

buried in the disproportionately bulky volumes of the Hexapla and
the Tetrapla. It was predominant, according to Jerome, in Palestine
at about 400 A. D.
0. Jerome mentions yet a third recension. This is to be traced
back to a certain Hesychius, about whom we know little,
and it prevailed in Egypt at about 400 A. D. It had been presu-
mably by that time in existence for about a century. No con-
clusive information is yet to be had with regard to this third
recension.
10. Origen’s text is indicated by O, that of Lucian by £, another
somewhat later recension, which is to be found in the big Catena
in XVI prophetas, by C.
Explanation of Symbols
This present pocket edition of the Septuagint is based mainly
upon B, S, and A, the three famous manuscripts of the Bible, which
originally included the whole of the О. T. and the N- T.
B: known as "Codex Vaticanus”. Korn. Bibi. Vat., Vat. graec. 120»;
4tb century A. D. Two passages are missing from this manu-
script: Genesis from the beginning up to Chap. XLVI. 2S. пршшу, and
Ps. CV. 271 to CXXXVtl. e1, but they were restored by a fifteenth
century hand; this addition does not concern us here, as it
furnishes a different text from that of B. Excepting this, В
comprises the whole of the Old Testament. The Books of the
Maccabees1 and the Psalms of Solomon, as a matter of course,
are lacking, this being an omission common to all the most
ancient manuscripts.
S: known as "Codex Sinaiticus” [— «]. The principal portion of it used
formerly to belong to the State library in Leningrad, but has
recently been sold to the British Museum in London. Tischendorf
brought with him a smaller portion, which is in Leipzig.
Cf. the full Index in my "Verzeichnls der griech. Hss. des A
Г'. (Mitt, des Sept.-Untern., Vol. 2, 1914), pp. 226-229.
A: known as "Codex Alexandrinus”. London, Brit. Mus., Royal 1 D.
V—VIII; Middle of the 5th century. The following passages
have been lost: 1 Kings XII. 17—XIV. s, and Ps. XLIX.201—LXXIX.h2
aurn?. — This MS alternates in the Psalter between the B- and
А-Texts (Rahlfs, S.-St. 2 [1907], p. 56; Septuaginta ed. Rahlfs
X [/95/], p. 70). This is to be found similarly elsewhere: in the
Book of Leviticus A combines in an uncustomary manner with
B, while in Job there is a similar combination of A with V
(cf. Introduction to Job).
Photographic reproductions of these three manuscripts have been
published (see my "Verzeichnls der griech. Hss.’*, quoted above
1 See my essay a “Alter und Heim at der vaticanischen Bibelhs."
Kl. 1899. pp. 72 ff.\ and “Ober
das Fehlen der Makkabderbdcher in der dthiop. Bibeliibers." (Zeitschr f. d. alt-
test. Wiss. 28 [1908], pp. 63 f.).
under S,). These three are also compared in the previous pocket
editions of the LXX, by Tischendorf and Nestle, and by Swete,
as well as in the large edition by Brooke and Mc Lean. Thus
references to the photographs themselves have only proved neces-
sary in cases of doubt. Variant readings of these three? MSS are
fully noted, though no reference has heen made to unimportant
scribal errors.
In connection with the signs of the Manuscripts, the following
