In the first two books of this series we have armed you with some
powerful techniques for successfiilly conducting a game of chess. Double
attack, pinning, diversion and decoy are now part of your arsenal. This new
book will equip you with some more sophisticated tactical weapons. It is
not always possible to reach the king by crude force alone. Try outwitting
your Opponent using cloak and dagger. Disguise yourself like a spy and
conduct youself like an experienced diplomat. Try to find a weak spot in
the enemy position, and at the appropriate moment eliminate the defence
and strike precisely with your dagger.
Incidentally, the other side’s pieces can become your allies. Draw them
to their king by skilful manoeuvering, let them block him so as not to leave
him any breathing space, and then land a decisive blow.
It is unpleasant when all your partner’s pieces are well coordinated.
Perhaps you can drive a wedge into their ranks and block them off with a
solid chess barrier.
Is the opponent’s attack against your defences really so terrifying?
Should you go totally onto the defensive? Always look for a counterattack.
A subtle intermediate move can change the course of the game.
Are your pieces crowded into a small space, and are they preventing
one another from getting to the enemy king? Decide which one is to attack
the king’s fortress and clear some space for the attacking piece.
The king always has to be defended first and foremost. Use this factor
to carry out a discovered attack against him and the other pieces. And then
the stones of your ‘windmill’ will grind the enemy forces to dust.
And even if your opponent’s king is well protected by his numerous
courtiers, imagine that you are a powerful X-ray machine, and your linear
pieces will discover gaps and holes in the opponent’s position.
The tests and combinations in the book
are divided into three levels of difficulty:
A	‘cadet’	-	(rating	1700-1800)
Ä	‘officer’	-	(rating	1800-1900)
&	‘king’	-	(rating	1900-2100)

diagram indicate the level of difficulty and whose tum it is to move.
For example:

A - Black to move, ‘officer’ level

write down your solution, as in a workbook.

Kunstgriffen für ein erfolgreiches Schachspielen ausgestattet. Zu Ihrem
Arsenal gehören jetzt Doppelangriff, Fesselung, Ablenkung und Hinlenkung.
Das neue Lösungsbuch bereichert Sie um eine exquisite taktische Ausrüstung.
An den König kommt man nicht immer durch rohe Gewalt. Versuchen Sie, den
Gegner mit Mantel und Degen zu überlisten. Verkleiden Sie sich wie ein Spion
und geben Sie sich wie ein erfahrener Diplomat.
Versuchen Sie, einen schwachen Punkt im Lager des Gegners zu finden,
beseitigen Sie im richtigen Moment seine Verteidigung und führen Sie einen
treffsicheren Stoß mit dem Degen.
Gegnerische Figuren können übrigens zu Verbündeten werden. Mit den
richtigen Manövem bringen Sie die gegnerischen Figuren in die Nähe des
Königs, so dass Sie ihn derart blockieren, dass der Arme keine Luft mehr
bekommt, und in diesem Moment führen Sie den entscheidenden Schlag.
Es ist nicht gut, wenn alle Figuren Ihres Gegners Zusammenwirken.
Vielleicht lohnt es sich, Unordnung in ihre Reihen zu bringen, indem man
die Linie unterbricht.
Und ist ein Angriff des Gegners auf Ihre Stellung wirklich so schlimm?
Muss man sich wirklich ganz in die Verteidigung zurückziehen? Versuchen
Sie immer einen Gegengriff. Ein feiner Zwischenzug wird den Gang der
Schlacht verändern.
Drängen sich Ihre Figuren nicht auf einem zu kleinen Raum zusammen,
stören sie einander nicht dabei, den gegnerischen König zu erreichen!
Entschließen Sie sich, welche Figur denn nun die Königsfestung stürmen soll,
und machen Sie dieser Figur Platz für den Angriff.
In erster Linie ist immer der König zu verteidigen. Nutzen Sie diesen
Umstand und führen Sie den Abzugsangriff. Und dann werden die Mühlsteine
Ihrer Arbeit das ganze feindliche Heer zwischen sich aufreiben.
Und auch wenn der gegnerische König mit seinen zahlreichen Höflingen
sicher gedeckt ist, stellen Sie sich vor, dass Sie ein leistungsstarkes Röntgengerät
sind, und dass sich unter dem harten Blick ihrer Figuren in der Stellung ihres
Gegners sofort Durchbrüche und Löcher zeigen.
Die Aufgaben und Kombinationen
