Festive, i

Bring goodwill to your home with this M
heavenly stitch from Joan Elliott И
oan Elliott’s exquisite design brings the traditional
Christmas angel right up to date. Worked in shades
of red and vibrant green, this project looks stunning
mounted in a gold frame, and would make a wonderful gift
for a cherished friend. But it’s the detail that really makes
it special. Subtle gold stitching adds flashes of shine to the
background, while ruby seed beads give the dainty flowers
a touch of texture and sparkle. We love the angel’s delicate
features and the feathered effect on her wings - and we’re
sure you’ll find her a joy to stitch. X

Kreinik threads
Kreinik's braid is non-divisible and
should be used singly in the needle. It is
a courser thread than stranded cotton,
so it might be worth using a larger, size
22 tapestry needle, which will help to
stretch each aida hole and reduce the
amount of wear and tear on the thread.

Cross stitch in one strand
* Kreinik v. fine braid 028
Step-by-step
Beading----------;
Backstitch in one strand
Thread your beading needle,
or a size 9 or 10 embroidery
needle, with a single strand of
cotton. To strengthen it, run it
over a tablet of beeswax or
a thread conditioner.
Secure your thread on the
reverse and bring your needle
to the front. Thread on the bead
and make a diagonal half cross
stitch over one aida block or two
evenweave threads.
3 Beads can be added singly or
in clusters. Keep your thread
taut to secure each bead. Once
this is done, to finish your thread
weave it through the reverse of
your stitches.

“For traditional Christmas elegance, look no further
than this angel design from the Romantic Time
Collection by Passione Ricamo. Metallic threads and
gold beads add sparkle that really stands out against
the aged look of the fabric. Stitch your design on 32
count linen or 16 count aida for an easier option.”

I’ve just finished stitching this
Noah’s Ark throw for a good
friend. I started it four years ago.
I’ve completed other projects
during this time, but this has
always been going on in the
background. My friend lives at
the other end of the country and we only
get to see each other a couple of times
a year. We’re meeting up soon, so I was
determined to finish it in time to hand it
over to her. I hope she likes it!

Top teacher
I took a break from a large project I’m
working on to complete this chart from
issue 202 (above, right). My nine-year-
old son Jack is just finishing Year 4, and
his teacher Mrs O’Flaherty, who has
taught him for two years, is leaving.
We’ll miss her, and when I saw this
chart in the magazine it seemed an
ideal way to say thank you. I altered the
colours slightly, but I’m sure she’ll like it!
Kim Taylor, Lancaster
Holiday memories
I’ve been cross stitching for a few years
but have always stuck to small designs.
Then I found this design (above, centre
right) called The Junction by John
Clayton, and it really reminded me of
the place where I used to go every
holiday when I was younger. I just had
to do it. To my surprise I finished it in
a few months, and I’m very proud!

School's out
I couldn’t resist the teddy card in Joan
Elliott’s Too Cool For School set in issue
203 (above, far right). When I saw it
I knew it would be great for the
headteacher at the school where I used
to work who was retiring. The one snag
was that I only had a week to stitch it,
so I had to hurry! I also had to make
a few minor adjustments, changing the
message on the blackboard and the
colour of the boots to the school
colours. All went well and I managed to
finish in time. I gave her the card and
she was really pleased with it. So was I!

Here’s a photo of my son Adam (below)
holding a present I made for his new

stitch something personalised for the

hours looking through back issues of

issue 196 I knew I was on to a winner.
You’d stitched them on to a hot water
bottle cover, but it’s great to see how
wonderfully adaptable so many of your
designs are. Because only backstitch is
used the design was so quick to stitch!

As soon as I opened issue 198
I fell in love with Margaret
Sherry’s adorable cat designs.
I decided I had to stitch one of
them, but I didn’t want to use
aida. I decided to give DMC’s
Soluble Canvas a try, to
customise a t-shirt (right). Your
instructions on how to get started
were easy to follow. I think
Soluble Canvas is a fantastic
product! I will definitely be trying
it again and I can highly
recommend it. I loved how simple
it was to use, and now I have
a lovely unique shirt to wear.

adopted a daughter. Wanting to
mark the occasion in a suitable
fashion, I decided on a name

the decor of her bedroom which
has a safari theme. I used five kits

I really enjoyed the Butterflies

a great ‘quick stitch’ in between my
larger projects. I took the liberty of
adding some words to it, so it makes
a nice little leaving gift for a colleague
from my church.

A reward-ing hobby
I work in Moscow as an advertising
manager for the Russian versions of
Total Film and CrossStitcher
magazines. I’ve been interested in cross
stitching for nearly four years, and I’ve
recently stitched the Reward design
from issue 203 as a present for my
husband’s birthday. I decided to use
28 count Zweigart Cashel linen as the
fabric rather than the recommended
aida. When the design was finished I felt
that a frame would be the best way of
displaying it. I hope you like it too!

We can’t
say equity release is right
for everyone
We can
say if it’s right for you
PF01377 05/2008
We've helped thousands of people decide whether equity
release is right for them. And we can help you too.
If you're over 55, using the equity that's built up in your
home could help finance your retirement - especially if your
pension or savings might be a little stretched.
Equity release may be the answer. Our experienced advisers
will sit with you in the comfort of your own home and go
through the facts, as well as the products we offer.
They'll listen to what you want from your retirement and
talk you through how receiving money from equity release
can affect the inheritance you leave, and if it will alter the
tax you pay or any benefits you receive. They'll explain that
taking equity release depends on your home type and value
and let you know which plans are available for your age.
They'll discuss the options with you so that you understand
the features, costs and risks.
Most importantly, if we don't think equity release is right
for you, we'll tell you.
This is a lifetime mortgage
or home reversion plan.
To understand the features
and risks, ask for a

Algerian eye stitch
These are made up of eight straight stitches
that are worked into a central hole. Work in
a clockwise direction from the top and
always bring your needle up on the outside
of the stitch and take it down through the
central hole, until the full stitch is complete.
Bright threads
Avoid bright coloured threads showing
through to the front by finishing off
your thread before moving on. Take
a moment to weave in any straggly ends
before making up the cards.
Mounting an aperture card
Step-by-step
1 Place your card face down and
stick narrow strips of double-
sided tape closely around the
aperture edge. Trim the edges of
your fabric to fit the card.
2 Place your stitching face up
and turn the card over to
position. Match up the grain of
your fabric with the vertical edge
of the card aperture.
Smooth out fabric creases
and press down firmly. Place
double-sided tape on the edge of
the left hand panel. For coloured
cards add a piece of white paper.
4 Fold the left panel over to line
up with the central panel.
Press down firmly to flatten the
card, fold the third side over and
your card is complete.

Combine cross stitch and papercraft with
this irresistible design by Joanne Sanderson
his is the perfect chance for you to create a beautiful
and personal gift for a new addition to the family. It’s
a great project to try if you’ve ever been tempted to
add some special embellishments to your stitching. We’ve
used buttons, ribbons and pretty papers to give a unique
edge to Joanne’s pram and heart design, which can be
stitched in either a pink or a blue colourway. You can adapt
the design as much as you like to suit your taste and use up
whatever you have in your cupboards. It will be a gift to
treasure for years to come.

1 Using the template below, cut three
gift tags from a piece of light blue
card and punch a hole at the top. Add
your gold and blue papers to each gift
tag in whatever combination you like. It
will look best if each tag is different,
with contrasting patterns together.
Add iron-on interfacing to the back
of all your stitched embellishments
to prevent the edges of the fabric
fraying. Cut out each piece of aida using
sharp scissors. Use pinking shears to
cut the top and bottom edges for
a lovely textured finish.

3 Attach a stitched heart to the
centre of two of your gift tags using
sticky pads to create a raised effect.
Add the remaining stitched pieces using
double-sided tape. For the centre tag,
cut a tiny heart shape from gold paper,
glue it to your button and attach under
the word ‘Welcome’.
Tie a ribbon through the punched
hole in the top of each tag. Attach
the finished tags to your stitching using
double-sided tape. Position them seven
aida blocks above the bottom stitched
border. Add the pram’s ribbon
embellishment with glue or a single
stitch around the centre knot.
Use this template to cut out
your tags. When positioning
them, leave five aida
squares between the pram
wheels and top edge, and
seven between the bottom
and the bar of hearts

Iron-on interfacing
Iron-on interfacing is a definite stitcher’s
must have. It has an adhesive side which
should be placed on the reverse of your
stitching and ironed in position. It helps
add rigidity to your design, prevents aida
from fraying and hides the reverse of
your work too! Great for cards, tags and
any project with exposed fabric edges.

When using waste canvas or Soluble Canvas
it’s important to make sure your threads are
started and finished securely. Be sure to keep
Personalise it
the reverse of the design as neat as possible
too. Loops or loose threads can be easily
snagged, causing your hard work to unravel.
Why not add a personal touch
to the t-shirt? Try stitching
your child's name along the
bottom of the design using
our alphabet above.
ICut a piece of Soluble Canvas
that’s 2cm larger all the way
round than the design. Position
the canvas on to your t-shirt and
then pin and tack the canvas in
place. Opt for a sharp embroidery
needle to help pierce the fabric.
2 Use a loop or waste knot to
start your thread and work
each cross stitch over a single
canvas block. You may find it’s
easier to identify each canvas
hole by angling a light above you
to reflect off the canvas surface.
30nce all the cross stitched
areas have been completed,
work the backstitch outlines.
Then remove your tacking
stitches, as shown above. There’s
no need to trim any excess canvas
because it will dissolve.
4 Dissolve the canvas by
placing the t-shirt into
a bowl of hot soapy water and
gently agitate. The canvas will
disappear within 10 minutes, so in
the meantime sit back and relax,
then hang the t-shirt up to dry.

and fill with stuffing. Now all
that’s left to do is to stitch the

your table runner!
Fold the fabric back and
pin the sides to 2.5cm

wide. Stitch in place using
coordinating red thread and
trim the excess.
Fold your fabric back

a point. Take care that the
point is centred and even on
either side of your runner.
Stitch into place and trim

2 To make the point on
the end of your runner,
make a mark 14.5cm away
from the side edge of your
fabric and 6.5cm from the
bottom of your stitching. Do
exactly the same for the
opposite end.
4 Attach your heart
sachet by tacking the

the back of the runner. Or if
you prefer, use the sachet on
its own as an extra
ornament for the tree.

Smyrna stitches
Create the stars on Mr Christmas’s hat
by using a simple Smyrna stitch. This is
made up of an ordinary cross stitch
followed by a vertical cross worked
directly on the top.
Cross stitch basics
Step-by-step
strands of
-Lcotton. Knot the opposite end of your
thread and bring your needle up to the fabric’s
surface ready to start stitching, with the knot
on the reverse of your fabric.
2 Next, you need to make a half cross stitch
over a single aida square as shown above.
This stitch should be worked from the bottom
left to the top right of an aida block. Make sure
you don’t pull too tightly or stretch the holes.
Make a second diagonal stitch to sit on
top of the first one, but this time work the
stitch from bottom right to top left, as shown
here. Once all the cross stitches are complete,
work the backstitch. Turn to page 87 for advice.

Why Kate Hoyle from Bothy
Threads is mad about Madeira
All Bothy Threads kits are made up to include Madeira
threads, so we asked Kate Hoyle for the lowdown on why she
prefers their products to all the others on the market. “I always
stitched with Madeira threads myself,” she tells us. “It was the
spiral packs that appealed to me first. The thread doesn’t get all tangled up and
the reference number is always there on the pack. I also think the shades are
especially good for modern designs which call for some pretty whacky colours!”
Kate was also drawn to Madeira’s huge range of speciality threads. “They really
add the finishing touches to my kits. I use the Supertwist threads to make sparkly
rainbows and Lana to give fuzzy effects for fur and dandelion seed heads.”
If you haven’t already tried stitching with Madeira threads, turn to page 53
and have a go at Kate’s special Christmas Mr Men project.

Make a fun festive gift bag with this
lovable Somebunny design from DMC
Ж Photography by Philip Sowels Styling and direction by Helena Tracey
Why not make your Christmas presents extra special
this year by stitching this adorable Somebunny
design on to a gift bag? DMC’s expressive little
rabbit is perfect for decorating a stocking or mounting in
a coordinating red or green frame for a gorgeous festive
decoration. This enchanting project is worked with two
threads on 14 count iridescent white aida, and with no
fractional stitches or fiddly embellishments it would make a
great project for a confident beginner. We love Somebunny’s
cuddly jumpsuit and reindeer antlers, made with clever use
of colour shading, and we’re sure whoever finds it under the
tree on Christmas morning will love it too! Ж

Maribou feather trim
Once you've finished making up your drawstring bag, add the
maribou trim. Simply use white thread to secure it in place
along the top edge of the bag, making a small stitch every 4cm.
1 Light Effects thread can be tricky, but you
can make things easier by securing it to the
eye of your needle. Take an individual strand
and fold it in half to create a loop at one end.
2 Next, pass the loop through the eye of your
tapestry needle and then pass the two tail
ends through the loop. A coat of thread
conditioner may make it more manageable.
3Pull the two tail ends tightly to secure
your thread to the needle. To finish your
thread, simply pass your needle and thread
through the reverse of your stitches.

Celebrate a new house with this contemporary
sampler from Caroline Palmer
ome is where the heart is and this beautiful sampler
is sure to bring good cheer wherever you hang it. The
rustic aida fabric gives it a comfortable, homespun
feel, and stitching it in three strands instead of two will make
the colours really ‘pop’. As well as being perfect for
a housewarming gift, this cosy cottage would make a great
project for any occasion at any time of year. You could even
stitch it as a Christmas present! Why not use our extra
alphabet chart to personalise the central panel with a name,
address or a unique message? X

Great gift idea
If you don't want to stitch the whole sampler, or
you’re looking for a smaller gift as a special extra,
make a card by stitching one of the corner motifs
on to a leftover piece of aida. All you need to do is
fray the edges and mount the finished stitching
on to a blank card using double-sided tape.

Jenni worked

I handed it over and he asked if it was
for him. He took a good look and said
it was amazing - then said he should
sign it and give it back. I said I’d
stitched it for him and would like him
to keep it, at which point he became

I thinking cap on to decide what
to give someone who can afford
almost anything he wants. A cross
stitch picture seemed the obvious
choice, but what to stitch? I settled for
the bat from his Bat Out Of Hell III -
The Monster's Loose album.
I hadn’t left myself long to do it -
just 47 days. I set about charting the
design in Anchor threads and in the
end there were 38,012 stitches. This
seemed an impossible target, as I
needed to work over 800 stitches a
day and I have a full-time job, but I
thought I would give it a go.
Many late nights and long weekends
stitching later, with lots of
encouragement from the wonderful
ladies on the Stitch and Craft Forum
(http://stitchandcraft.forumwww.com/
index.php), it was finished.
The show was held in the grounds of
Castle Howard in Yorkshire and I got
VIP treatment! When it was my turn to
hand over my gift and get my photo
lot of work goes into stitching (unless
he’s a secret stitcher!). I’m planning my
next picture, and I hope he continues
to tour so I can hand it over too."

an Oxfam shop, thereby guaranteeing
a regular supply of nice clothes, jigsaw
puzzles, patent yoghurt makers - and
books. Like my latest bargain, As
They Say In Zanzibar (715 pages of
international proverbs for only £1.49).
Some of these may be a tad
obscure. Even the Dutch may not fully
comprehend their: “It takes a long time
to sharpen a wooden hammer” or “Do
not board a ship without an onion.” And
perhaps the finer points of “Those with
cut once.” That translates into cross
stitching as "Count twice, stitch once."
Fail to do that (come on, we’ve been
there), make the same mistake several
times and risk a rebuke in Latin. “Those
who stumble over the same stone twice
are fools." However, there is consolation
from America. "They wouldn’t make
erasers if we didn’t make mistakes” and
“It is in the crooked wood we recognise
the true artist.”
Some sayings do need updating.
China’s “No needle is sharp at both

brought out the double-ended needle
a few years ago. Ethiopia’s “A needle

stitch. The USA’s “Dull scissors do not
cut straight,” for example. Or Poland’s
"Where the needle goes the thread
must follow” (How I wish that were
always the case). There’s good advice
from Slovakia, though: “Measure twice,
looping cross stitchers (and how would
mothers manage by thinking of only
one thing at a time?).
Other proverbs home in on cross
stitch with scary precision. Kenya’s
"There is bound to be a knot in a long
piece of string” applies, as we know, to
small lengths of thread, too. Anyone
dithering about when to start that
project for Christmas gets truly noble
advice from Germany: "The best time
to plant a tree was 20 years ago: the
second best time is now.”
But, oddly, the most wonderful
thought was on a bit of paper I found
inside the book... “Only the magic and
the dreams are true.”

is brimming with over 400 simple to stitch

the adorable bears and snowmen? There’s
also an array of alphabets, numbers and
border designs to personalise your gifts.

cards, gift tags, drawstring bags, towels
- the possibilities are endless. The book

The world's first commercially
printed Christmas cards were
produced in London in 1843. In
2005 one of these originals sold
for nearly £9,000!
DMC’s Magic Guide fabric. Now you
can spend more time stitching and
less time counting and unpicking
with this innovative product. The
aida fabric has a pink grid woven
into it, dividing each set of ten aida
blocks. This matches the grid on
your cross stitch chart. It’s great for
beginners, but even seasoned
stitchers who want to tackle a larger
project will find it useful. Once
you’ve finished stitching simply
wash the fabric and the grid lines
will disappear. Available for just
£3.00 from Wimblebees or your
nearest DMC stockist.

These linen and aida pouches will make
beautiful keepsake gifts. You can
personalise each one using the
alphabet on page 66. When
you’re finished stitching, fill
them with anything from
love letters and
photographs to lavender
scented potpourri. For
your stitching buddies,
why not fill them with
luxury threads and buttons?

Howto... make a drawstring bag
Drawstring bags can be made in a variety of ways. For a nice and simple option,
cut slits in a felt bag and thread through a piece of cord. To create a more
classic look, follow the simple instructions below.
Cut out two pieces of fabric. Be sure to
allow for an extra 3cm to the width and
6cm to the height of each piece of fabric.
Fold and pin along the right and left hand
sides of each piece. Hem in place.
With the right sides facing in, pin and
hem along the sides and bottom of
the bag. Make sure that you only sew below
the horizontal hemmed edges that you
created in step 2.
Fill these
little pouches with
threads and buttons
for your friends
2 Fold about 4.5cm from the top edge of
your fabric over your cord. Pin in place
and hem. Make sure you take care not to
hem through the cord itself. Repeat with
your second piece of fabric.
4Turn your bag right side out. To create
the drawstring effect, thread one end of
each cord through the opposite piece of
fabric. Now all that’s left to do is pull the
strings to tighten and enjoy your bag!
Meg Evershed
of The Nutmeg
Company tells
us what
inspires her
designs...
How long have
you been
designing?
I had my first design published in
a Future magazine in 1993, but
obviously Id been working for
some time before that.
What were you doing before you
started The Nutmeg Company?
I had a career in the big wide
world, but my children had severe
health difficulties, so I had to find
work that I could do from home.
What inspires you?
Prayer works for me! I think most
designers would say the natural
world is a source of never ending
inspiration, and it's obvious that
architecture is another big
influence for The Nutmeg Company
designs. For decoration, I always
think Faberge is the master and
study his work.
What's been your most
challenging design?
In 2001, Creative Exhibitions asked
me to produce a model of one of
the Queen's Palaces, and we
decided on Windsor Castle. It took
three months working from 6am
until late at night, and was
exhibited at the Stitch and Craft
show, 2002. See it on our website.
What are some of your best sellers?
Half our range is worked on
perforated paper, and half on aida
fabric. In the paper section the
best sellers are our Christmas
cards, and in the fabric section the
Christmas decorations probably
sell the best, but many people seem
to like our little houses and shops.

My husband loves the Pink Panther
and I’ve been looking for a chart to
stitch for him. Can you suggest any
good design ideas?
This bold design should be just what
you’re looking for. The Pink Panther is
available as a kit for £10, including 14
count aida, or as a chart only. You could
even stitch it on to the corner of a pillow
or attach it to a notebook for a simple
gift. Available from Leisure Time
Cross Stitch.
I’m looking for some quick Halloween
designs to stitch. Any suggestions?
We absolutely love the adorably spooky
Things That Go Bump In The Night
chart leaflet. You’ll easily have enough
time to stitch all four designs, which
include a jack o’ lantern, spider, skull
and candy corn, before the 31st of
October. Order yours for £3.56
from Sewandso.

Tapestry needles come
in a variety of sizes. They
have a blunt tip and
a large eye, which means
they slip through the
fabric grain with ease.
These are not essential

experience and take on
larger designs, you’ll find
they’ll help to keep an
even stitching tension.

Guide
Flower
The dotted central lines on the chart should be matched
with the centre of your fabric. Fold your fabric in half and
then into quarters. Where the fold lines cross is where you
should start stitching.
CrossStitcher’s charts are charted on a squared black
and white grid. Each coloured square and symbol
represents a different thread colour.
All symbols that appear on the chart are listed in the key
with their corresponding thread code alongside it. The key
also tells you the different stitches used in the design.
In the key, the closest column of thread codes listed next to
the chart symbols is always the thread brand used in the
design. Similar colour matches are listed alongside it.
Cut a 40cm thread length. Take two
strands individually and then regroup
together. Knot one end and start your thread
with a waste knot as explained opposite.
Work from the centre of the chart and
fabric and bring your thread up to the
fabric’s surface to make your first stitch. Make
a diagonal half cross stitch, from bottom left
to top right over a single aida block.
ЗМаке a second diagonal stitch to complete
the cross. This stitch should sit diagonally
from bottom right to top left over the same
aida block, as shown here.
Always try to work from the centre of your
design towards the top first and then from
the centre towards the bottom.
5 Once the cross stitched areas are
complete, add the backstitched outlines.
Change to a sharp embroidery needle and
weave your thread through the reverse of your
stitches to secure.
Make a backstitch over a single aida block
in the direction shown on the chart. Now
bring your needle up an aida block away from
this stitch and take it down next to your
previous stitch and so on.

Aida fabric is
referred to by its
'count' or'holes per
inch'. Each cross

take it down through the aida,
about 2cm from your starting point.
Now bring it back to the fabric’s
surface to make your first stitch.
2 Work a row of cross stitches
towards your knot, or if you
prefer, work a row of half crosses
(///), and then work back along the
same row to finish the cross (\ \ \).
Once you’re happy that your
starting thread is secure, snip off
the knot. To finish your thread, weave
your thread through the back of your
stitches, as shown here.

worked over a single
aida block.
Backstil
Step-by-step
Backstitch is used to
outline a design and
to add extra detail. It
should always be
worked once the rest
of the design
is complete.
Evenweave
ICut a single 70cm thread length
and fold it in two to create a loop
at one end. Now thread your needle
with the two separate tail ends.
2 Bring your needle up to the
fabric’s surface with the loop on
the reverse. Make a half cross stitch,
passing the needle through the loop.
3Pull your needle and thread
through the fabric to secure your
loop on the reverse of the fabric,
as shown here.
Evenweave fabric is
made up of evenly
woven threads and
is also referred to by
its 'count'. Each
cross stitch should
be worked over two
horizontal and two
vertical threads.
Fractional stitches
Use a sharp embroidery needle.
To secure your thread weave it
through the back of your stitches.
Bring your needle up to the surface.
2 Work your backstitch over an
aida block, either horizontally,
vertically or diagonally depending on
the direction shown on the chart.
3 Bring your needle up an aida
block away from this stitch. Now
pass it through the fabric at the
same point at your previous stitch.
Step-by-step
Use a sharp embroidery needle.
To secure your thread weave it
through the back of your stitches.
Now bring your needle up to the
fabric’s surface to start stitching.
Work your backstitch in the
direction shown on the chart.
We’ve worked it over a couple of
blocks here, so refer to the chart for
where to make your next stitch.
3 Bring your needle up an aida
block away from this stitch - or
as many shown on the chart - and
pass it through the fabric at the
same point as your previous stitch.
These are shown on
the chart by two
symbols opposite
one another in
a chart square. Find
our step-by-step
guide on page 24.
French knots
Г French knots are
represented on the

My life in stitches...
Rachel Hutchinson
Rachel Hutchinson’s beautiful textile creations
combine cutting edge style with traditional techniques
Rachel Hutchinson is a textile artist
from Northern Ireland who creates
stunning masterpieces using
traditional techniques. She’s an
advocate of needlework as a craft of
the future as well as the past, and her
fascination for old and new is a theme
which appears often in her work.
What made you decide to make
a career out of crafting?
It had been an ambition of mine since
university, but it only really materialised
into an option after I did some design
work for a homewares company in
2006. Finding that I had business skills
to balance out the creative skills was
a great encouragement! I’ve always
appreciated textiles and been
fascinated by the endless possibilities of
what can be created with a needle and
thread. The challenges were limitless,
and they still are today!
What kind of techniques do you use
most in your work?
I use a mixture of traditional patchwork
and quilting techniques in very
contemporary combinations.
I think it’s important to not just learn
and copy a technique but develop it and
make it your own. I mainly stitch by
98 CrOSSStitcher Christmas 2008
hand and I’m fascinated by war-time
‘make do and mend’ stitches.
What inspires your ideas?
Anything can inspire me - a song,
a book, a film, a place or even a person!
I’m very influenced by the combination
of the old with the new, representing
the perpetual motion of generations.
When I use old objects and fabrics in
my designs, I imagine that a story is
contained within every warp and weft.
“I think it’s important not just to copy
a technique, but to make it your own"
What’s the best thing about being
part of the creative world?
Every day is a challenge! It never
becomes boring. If I feel a project
becoming too familiar, I know it’s time to
work on something else. Being my own
boss and loving what I do is priceless.
I think I’m very fortunate.
How do you think we can make
needlework more trendy?
Personally I think embroidery is already
very chic! Needlework can be used to
embellish, customise and revamp
anything. So in the light of today's
environmental issues it’s a great
recycling tool too.
What cross stitch sampler saying
sums up your attitude to life?
I think I’d choose, ‘If it’s too easy, you’re
not trying hard enough’!
