Welcome
Contents
September 2023
We are just back from a brilliant three-day canal boat journey along the Grand
Union canal from Market Harborough. We hired a Boutique Narrowboat, and,
wow, it was luxurious. A little bit of tuition and we were let free to go up locks, go
through tunnels and open swing gates. Really good fun. See our feature starting
on pll8 to find out more about it.
Our garden has certainly been a lot happier about the summer’s weather than
we have been. If a garden could be described as having a smile - green swathes
of lawns, the veg patch laden with produce, and flowers still looking fresh - then
our garden has a very broad smile on its face this year. As for us, we have become
proficient at dodging the showers and enjoying the very agreeable temperatures.
And now our minds are starting to turn to the start of the school term and
preparing our outfits and picnics for the Burghley Horse Trials. Somehow these
rites of passage are reassuring moments in our calendar, providing shape and
definition to our lives.
Enjoy your re-entry into the everyday after, hopefully, a lovely summer.

Local businesses at the
Burghley Horse Trials
We asked a selection of local businesses why having a stand at Burghley Horse Trials is
such a draw for them and what visitors will find on their stand this year to delight (hem
THE Defender Burghley Horse Trials, taking place this year from Thursday 31 August to Sunday 3 September,
is one of the major events that draw people to our area and it has a hugely positive economic impact on the
hospitality sector. But what of our local retail businesses? Walking around all the trade stands one is struck
by the range and depth of high-end national and international brands, with the Defender stand naturally
getting pride of place. But what is often overlooked is that many of our local businesses choose it too as a shop
window for their wares. So we decided to take a closer look at some of those local businesses and to find out why
the Burghley Horse Trials shopping experience is such a draw for them.
Stamford Auction Rooms
Jessica Wall, owner
What attracts you to the Burghley Horse Trials? How long have you had a stand?
Burghley Horse Trials is such a huge event every year in Stamford that we all love to attend, so
having a stand there just made perfect sense to us. Not only do we get to see lots of our local
clients to let them know what we are doing for the rest of the year, but we meet so many new
people, which is what we all enjoy very much.
What will visitors find on your stand this year to delight them?
We provide free valuations and advice on buying and selling at auction, but there are also
examples of items for sale through our auctions, including furniture, paintings, lighting, jewellery,
bronzes and mirrors, and many more treasures, and these always seem to delight our visitors!
The Fitted Furniture Company
What attracts you to the Burghley Horse Trials? And how long have you had a stand?
The diverse coverage of trade stands, talking to people from all over the country and the
general happy atmosphere over the 3-Day Event. We always look forward to BHT! We have been
exhibiting there for the last 10 years, and exhibit something different every year.
What will visitors find on your stand this year to delight them?
This year we will be displaying a glorious, bespoke, painted Shaker-style kitchen with a 19SOs'
Aga and an island display housing a Belfast sink, along with the sale of various homewares to
complement the kitchen and home.

Nikki Heighton, Director
What attracts you to the Burghley Horse Trials? How long have you had a stand?
Burghley is one of the most prestigious 3-Day Events in the world, and we are proud to be a part
of it. We have had a stand since 2012, and, as many of our customers are also regular visitors
to the event, the beautiful setting in Burghley Park is the ideal environment to showcase our
products to customers old and new.
What will visitors find on your stand this year to delight them?
We have a very exciting line up of products to show this year, with our new partner Iseki UK.
We will have a range of Iseki s excellent tractors and mowers to view, as well as our other new
venture, the rugged Corvus Utility Vehicles.
Tinker and Fix
Edd and Louise Hitchen, Owners
What attracts you to the Burghley Horse Trials? How long have you had a stand?
This will be our second year at Burghley. We’ve attended personally for many years, so it’s been
great to be ‘on the other side’ and have a stand. It’s a really good event - it’s so busy (great for
business) and has a lovely, friendly vibe - everyone really enjoys themselves, and there are lots of
interesting people to chat to... customers and stall holders. Logistically, it’s a big show, so it also
makes a refreshing change (and much easier) to be able to stay at home (and be able to bring the dog)!
What will visitors find on your stand this year to delight them?
We are delighted that we have some of the more unusual Sneeboer garden tools for customers to
see, along with the favourites such as the Old Dutch Trowel. We also have selected a wider range of
Opinel penknives, and Carhartt clothing including jackets and caps. And, of course, well have all of our
favourite Niwaki garden tools, our unique skatewood tools and some new present ideas for Christmas!

Gladwells Rutland
Cory Fuller, Owner
What attracts you to the Burghley Horse
Trials? And how long have you had a
stand here?
How could you be a local business and not
want to be part of such a great national
event, held right here on our doorstep? We
love celebrating hard work and a passionate
striving for excellence, as demonstrated by
our artists and watching rider and horse
work together over the course of a 3-Day
Event evokes much the same feeling. This is
only our second year!
What will visitors find on your stand this
year to delight them?
Our stand will be beautifully hung with fine
art from the Impressionists to contemporary
works. Each day one of our artists will be on
the stand painting in person and happy to
discuss their craft. The Gladwells team will
be on hand and enjoy nothing more than
sharing their knowledge and passion for the
collection with visitors.
The Stamford Notebook Co.
Hugo Spiegl, Director
What attracts you to the Burghley Horse
Trials? And how long have you had a stand?
We love coming to Burghley. We have
had a stand here for 10 years now. Being
a predominantly online business, it is
the perfect opportunity to showcase our
collections to new customers, and also catch
up with regulars. We have customers who
visit our stand every year for their diaries!
We enjoy the buzz of a busy stand, meeting
four-legged friends and discussing the finer
detail with stationery enthusiasts.
What will visitors find on your stand this
year to delight them?
We are revamping our stand this year and
we are excited for you to see it! We have
an extensive selection of Lifestyle books,
including our ever popular Tasting Journals
and Visitor Books. We are also embossing on
stand, so you can get your chosen stationery
personalised whilst you shop! We can also
take orders, if you are looking for something
more bespoke or have a trade enquiry.
Dawson of Stamford
John Dawson, Owner
What attracts you to the Burghley Horse Trials? How long have you had a stand?
We have had a stand for more than 40 years and have never missed a year - apart from Covid,
of course. For us, it’s a perfect chance to renew relationships. People love to come along and say
’hi’. It reminds people we are still here and thriving.
What will visitors find on your stand this year to delight them?
We always like to have a representative cross-section of what you will find in our shop, so antique
and modern jewellery and antiques.

Defender Burghley Horse Trials
Gladwells Rutland at the
Burghley Horse Trials
GLADWELLS Rutland, fine art dealers with galleries in Oakham and London, are delighted to
be at Burghley Horse Trials for their second year and plan to provide a spectacle for visitors
to enjoy at their stand from a commanding position on Avenue A.
Owner, Cory Fuller, says: ‘My brother Glenn and I are the third generation of our family to be at
the helm of this unique business, which has a history stretching back 277 years. We have a beautiful
gallery in Beauchamp Place, London, but since moving to this part of the country and establishing
ourselves here, we've relished the freedom and new opportunities that space and the countryside
have provided. It's allowed us to bring our collection of the very best-quality artists to a new
audience. Our stand at Burghley will highlight many of the artists found in our Mill Street gallery and
include works by Alfred Munnings and the French landscape painter Gustave Louiseau. We’ll also
present contemporary painters such as Peter Van Breda, whose depictions of Stamford capture its
historic beauty, and Madeleine Bunbury, whose portraits of horses are exquisitely rendered through
the use of traditional materials and pigments.
'Each day a different artist will be creating work on the stand, among them sculptor Edward
Waites, whose particular focus is the equine form. He’s well known for bringing out the strength and
spirit of his subjects and will be working in clay in the initial stages of a piece.’
The 'Gallery in the Garden’, which is held at Molecey Mill in the autumn and spring each year,
will also be transplanted to the Horse Trials to create a union of art and nature. This year Gladwells
have worked closely with the organisers to create a magical focus in the hospitality area through the
sculptures of Simon Gudgeon, another artist who they have represented for many years.

5 ways to survive Burghleyweek
according to Katie Cardew
BlRGHLEY
Veit
To attend Burghley Horse Trials
Example: Are we Buvghleying this year?
PREPARATION IS KEY
I And by preparation I do not mean tickets or route planning or any
JL of that nonsense, I mean OUTFIT. What you wear to Burghley is
very important. Now, no need to panic because we can go right back to
primary school... yes, there is a uniform.
Ladies, from head to toe we have; felt trilby, usually in green or plum
and adorned with a jaunty feather (no, you won't wear this at any other
point in the year, but trust me, it’s worth it just for the one day), pink or
blue shirt (if it has pheasants on it, extra Burghley points), bare legs (rain
or shine), a white mini skirt, a pair of pulled-up shooting socks and, of
course, a pair of Dubarry boots (Fairfax & Favor are in hot pursuit of this
coveted item of uniform and maybe this year they will win out, time will
tell... what exciting times we live in). Option 2 is a brightly coloured floral
maxi dress teamed with denim jacket. This MUST be worn with a little
leather bag with a wide colourful woven strap worn across the body, no
exceptions. With either option, it is good manners to accessorise your
outfit with at least 5 to 10 oversized cardboard shopping bags, the bigger
and more awkward to carry, the better.
Gentlemen, your uniform is simpler but no less strict. Firstly, sunglasses
are to be worn on your HEAD (bad luck for your retinas if it’s a sunny day),
your shirt is to be pink or blue, and your shoes must be either Hunter
wellies or a pair of kilim brogues. It is your trousers you can have a bit
more fun with. Choose a bright colour (green, scarlet or mustard are
preferred) and if you can find a pair with tiny dachshunds/game birds/
flamingos embroidered on them, 10 Burghley points to you. Again,
accessorise to your heart’s content with shopping bags and, if possible, a
dog or three.
2 NOW THAT YOUR OUTFIT IS SORTED, IT’S TIME TO THINK
ABOUT THE CAR PARK!
In particular, if you’re coming on Saturday, it's worth selling a few
family heirlooms or a kidney or two* to help to pay for it. As a teenager, I
once found myself in a friend’s boot to avoid the fee. 1 have to say, it wasn’t
worth it and I wouldn’t advise it, especially as the car was a Mini Cooper.
Plus, you might get mud on that white skirt or pink flamingo trousers.
Чоке-Ed!
3 SHOPPING
This deserves its own chapter, but they would only give me one
article, so I’ll do my best. You hit the shops as soon as you enter.
At first, if you are not after a set of shiny show jumps, a block of stables or a
brand new Land Rover, you might feel the shopping element is not for you.
But. fear not, delve further in. and your money and your pocket will be easily
parted. From ostrich feather keyrings to sweeping tweed capes, LeMieux
toy ponies with a wardrobe to rival Madonna’s all the way to the essential
purchase - a Burghley mug and tea towel from Katie
Cardew (nudge, wink), it is, quite literally, shopping
heaven. You need a wooden chopping board
carved into the shape of a mallard? It’s there. How
about a hot pink velvet jacket with gold buttons?
(I know that’s there because 1 bought one last year.)
It’s also the ideal place to play a game I like to call
‘spot the purchase that seemed like a great idea r-L
at the time*. The winner of my own personal [Г
competition last year was a lady dragging f/
around a 6-foot metal giraffe, which doubled <—
up as a bird feeder. Essential stuff indeed.
18
‘Should you make it past
the acres of shopping
tents, the gleaming red
Pimm’s stand and then
through the swarms of
insanely be clothed people
being dragged around by
labradors, you may make
it to the other side and see
a Igaspl equestrian'
• COMING IN AT NUMBER 4 IS LUNCH
7A What to eat and where to eat it? There’s simply a quagmire of
Z JL options, and you're darned lucky I'm here to guide you, quite
frankly. First, you have the official food aisle. Busy from around 11am, the
aisle boasts many an option, with the most popular being the hot dog
stand. Us Brits are an exotic bunch aren’t we. The downside of the aisle
is seating. If you want to sit on the grass, great, crack on. If you would
like a chair, prepare to go into full shark mode, scanning and tracking,
marking out the family sitting amongst empty wrappers and then lurk in
the shadows, ready to fight off the three other families also lying in wait.
It’s brutal and I have warned you.
Option two is The Boot. I’m not talking about the smelly boot of
that Mini Cooper, oh no, I’m talking the glamorous world of 4x4 boot
picnicking. It’s a world you rarely see in domestic environments and is
solely reserved for the wilds of British summertime events. The idea is you
pack your picnic (and no, egg sandwiches from ESSO are not acceptable);
i’m talking homemade quiches, pigs in blankets, cucumber
and salmon sandwiches and a 4-tiered home-grown
strawberry cake with cream from your own cows.
You pair it with several bottles of the yellow-labelled
fizzy stuff, sterling silver cutlery, crystal glasses, etc,
and lay it out on the back of your clean, show-ready boot.
With your open boot feeling like he’s the world’s best
wedding buffet and not full of wet Labrador as per his
norm, you sit on your deckchairs and munch your
lunch, Burghley style. If you see others around
you doing the same, the etiquette is to nod.
If you wish to proceed to Level 2 of car boot
picnicking, you can purchase a ticket to park your car
next to the cross country course. Be aware that while you
pick at your homemade millefeuille, you may be expected
to catch an errant horse. Not for the faint hearted.
31 August to 3 September 2023
5 LAST, AND DEFINITELY LEAST*: THE HORSES
Should you make it past the acres of shopping tents, the gleaming
red Pimm’s stand and then through the swarms of insanely be-
dothed people being dragged around by labradors, you may make it to the
other side and see a [gasp] equestrian. No worry that these are the world’s
most elite riders, sitting atop horses that glimmer and glisten as they move,
their muscles honed to equine perfection. The jumping courses may be
arguably the most challenging and complex in the world and in order to
complete the dressage, you have to dance with your horse to levels beyond
the Royal Ballet School. No matter any of that, for this is an event about the
shopping, the lunch and the Land Rovers. But, and it’s a big but, should you
stumble upon a horse and rider, 1 urge you to marvel at their sheer beauty,
exemplary partnerships and undeniable magnetic prowess. But, for the
love of God, do not let your terrier escape onto the cross country course.
So, to conclude my review, if you are still in any doubt, any doubt
whatsoever, about whether to attend Burghley this year, 1 would say,
wholeheartedly, 10/10, yes, yes, yes. It is a privilege that we have such a
world-class event on Stamford’s doorstep, and to top it off, that the event
sits within the glorious shadows of. in my humble opinion, the most
beautiful house in the country. So. wear the feathered hat, don those
tasselled boots, and glug that Pimm’s. Shall we Burghley? YES WE SHALLI

Wingates Gallery
A preview of the ‘Meet the Artists’ Exhibition with Brenda Herd, 1 lamish 1 lerd & Mollie Anne
at Wingates Gallery in Market Harborough on Thursday 28 September, 7-9pm
AFAMiLY-owned, independent business with art galleries in Market
Harborough and Leicester, the award-winning Wingates Gallery
offers a fabulous choice of original and limited-edition art and sculpture
in a variety of media - from landscapes and abstracts to still life, wildlife
paintings, seascapes, cityscapes, figurative and illustrative pieces.
The gallery has a busy schedule, with ‘Meet the Artists’ Exhibitions held
year round. The next of these, on the last Thursday in September, focuses
on the work of three artists: Brenda Herd, Hamish Herd and HollieAnne.
The artists
Hamish Herd creates original skyscape paintings and sculptures that
are exclusive to Wingates Gallery. Born in South Africa, Hamish is now
based in Yorkshire. After studying for a Bachelor of Arts degree with
Art History as his major, Hamish started his career teaching art at a
secondary school. Soon, however, he decided to become a full-time
professional artist, and, 25 years later, he is still passionate about
producing excellence in every piece of work he creates.
Hamish draws on his faith for
inspiration in each one of his
artworks. He has a strong personal
connection with every sculpture
and loves producing works
. that speak directly to him.
L *1 just feel art has so much to
В say and can move people in
' ways that little else can.’
I Brenda Herd has been a
F professional artist for over
25 years and makes original
abstract and floral paintings.
Bom in South Africa, she is
now based in North Yorkshire with her husband Hamish. Here, she enjoys
working with different media, including resins, oils, acrylics and timber,
finding inspiration in her surroundings such as landscapes, seascapes and
reflections in nature. She is passionate about making all the materials she
uses in her work fuse in harmony. Wingates Gallery is the first UK gallery to
exhibit Brenda’s resin artwork.
Northampton-born HollieAnne brings a sense of light-hearted innocence
to her work, encouraging you to revisit happy times in your lives whilst
keeping a strong sense of friendship and childhood magic. She grew up
with a love of all things creative and spent most of her school days in the
art room, going on to study fashion at college.
With a keen interest in getting out into the world, she started working as
a flight attendant, which then led to her travelling and living in Australia.
She moved back to the UK last year and is now based in Leicestershire.
Hollie Anne is exclusively represented by Wingates Gallery.

Hilly Horton Home
Charity Fashion Show
BORN out of a chance conversation between Lowick business
woman Clare Hinde from The British Info Group and Hilly Horton
at her shop in Thrapston, the debut Hilly Horton Home Charity
Fashion Show was put together and subsequently took place at Lowick
Village Hall on Friday 14 July.
The idea behind the event was to showcase Hilly’s latest clothing,
jewellery and accessory collections, whilst raising funds to support the
listed village hall, whose Trustees have the continuous task of preserving
the future of the historic building for the local community.
With a team of fabulous models, which included Lowick residents,
Islip Women's Rounders team and one or two of Hilly’s customers, all of
the stops were pulled out to create an authentic ambience with colourful
bunting, illuminated decor, catwalk commentary and music. Throughout
the event, the seven models had their hair styled by Jody Richardson.
and Michelle Robinson at Hawthorne Grove Outdoor Venue, expertly
directed the show behind the scenes.
With a busy Prosecco Bar, a fabulous raffle and a chance to purchase
from the collection during the sell-out event, great fun was had by all, with
lots of lovely feedback since.
So many people gave up their time voluntarily to help make the evening
such a great success for the charity, and Hilly and her team are extremely
grateful to everyone involved.
The extensive collection of clothing, jewellery and accessories can be
found at Hilly Horton Home on the High Street in Thrapston. The shop is
open Monday to Saturday, from 9.30am to 5.30pm.

seeking sunshine
Want to keep it easy? Helen Dooley, Director of More Travel, looks at some
interesting sunshine options
Cypins
With temperatures still reaching mid-20s as late as November, Cyprus is
an excellent option for a later holiday. Whilst yes, I concur that there are
parts of Cyprus that look like something out of an '80s timeshare advert
- with no real beach' to speak of - but if you know where to go, I promise
you’ll find some very smart hotels and a surprisingly decent selection of
independent restaurants.
We particularly like the Almyra and the Annabelle hotels, right on
the waterfront in Paphos. Although very different in style, each of these
beautifully designed sister hotels has a beautiful seafront pool; and the
best thing about them is they are incredibly well run by a very experienced
team, who really, really care about their guests!
The Canaries
I’m often asked ‘Is it really built up?’, and the honest answer is, in the most
part, yes! But there’s a great reason for it! There is pretty much year-round
sunshine, some rather lovely scenery, warm waters and short flight times
from Europe. It has so much to offer tourists that it’s no surprise space on
the coastline is in hot demand!
In many ways the popularity of the islands contributes to what I think
is its biggest asset - variety. There is a fine collection of 5-star hotels on
the islands, which are often in busy spots - they typically have the beach
to their rear, a lovely promenade that ambles for miles along the coast
- and they are fringed at the front with an infinite array of bars, shops,
cafes and restaurants.

Looking for culture?
Autumn is a phenomenal time of year to visit the cultural highlights of
the Mediterranean. The dimmer switch on the heat of the sun has been
dialled down, leaving pleasant sunny days... ideal for those places that
require exploration.
Midalucia: This southern Spanish regions heady mix of influences,
cultures and faiths makes Seville, Granda and Ronda very desirable places
to visit at this time of year.
Malta: Beautiful Malta, sitting pretty in the middle Mediterranean, is
steeped in history with medieval citadels and the most stunning harbour.
The island has so much to explore that I can’t even begin to speak highly
enough of it. A quick nod to our favourite Iniala Harbour House, a 23-room
hotel in exquisitely restored 19th-century mansion houses, with the most
perfect views across the sparkling harbour.
Want to lux it up?
Options abound for longer-haul travel in our autumnal months - the lure
of talcum powder sands and swaying palm trees becomes very real! With
so much to choose from, here are our top tips for making your luxury
spend go further this autumn.
I )u Im i: Always a winner for purveyors of ultra luxury, the city where
everything that glitters is gold, and each new hotel builds bigger and
better - but this year something quite extraordinary happened.
The brand-new Royal Atlantis opened, super slick, super sexy and
packed to the rafters with celebrity chefs, salubrious details and haut
couture experiences. Of course, this is high on many of our clients’
wish lists, and we’ve had superb feedback from those that have dipped
a toe in.
But the real deal is not at the font of fabulousness - but with the other
astonishing 5-star properties, who are feeling a little left out and have
come up with all manner of tricks and teasers to try and remind us that
they are still here!
Mau rii ins: A gorgeous island in the Indian Ocean - weather in October
is pretty much ideal, as the temperature settles in the high 20s, humidity is
low, and life is perfect. There are a few reasons I highlight Mauritius over the
zillion other idyllic beach destinations 1 could suggest. I love Mauritius. It’s
warm, it’s friendly, culturally it’s interesting - if you Qike me) need at least a day
or two off the sun lounger, there are waterfalls, temples, markets, towns you
can enjoy. Nothing too onerous but enough to feel like you’ve travelled a little!
The island has a fantastic selection of uber-luxury properties - One &
Only St Geran. The Four Seasons, the LUX Grand Baie and The Royal Palm
to name a few - but it also has a really lovely eclectic mixture of smaller
properties, from adult-only sanctuaries to some really delightful low-key,
casual, beachfront guesthouses.
Opposite page: aerial view of the glorious beach at the One & Only St Geran, Mauritius.
Above, clockwise from top left: rooftop at the Almyra in Cyprus; the glittering new Royal
Atlantis in Dubai; The Vault bar at the Iniala Harbour House in Malta.

Spaces By Design
Spaces By Design in Stamford is truly inspirational, displaying kitchen, bedroom and
bathroom solutions that will really get you thinking about the potential of your own home
OWNERS Andrew and Marie Pope, with a background in the
design and styling of luxury yachts, bring their eye for detail and
flair to everything they do, and they are skilled at interpreting
your needs and coming up with truly stylish solutions that
maximise space and utility. They do not have a pre-programmed, set view of
the solution - they see every customer and space as a unique opportunity.
Virtual reality design experience
Andrew and Marie can bring a proposed design to life for their clients
with state-of-the-art virtual reality technology. The 4-D virtual reality
envisaging is a quite unique service, enabling you to experience the
design before committing to it It allows you to wander around a room
virtually to check that the spaces are working as you had envisaged - you
can open a cupboard, walk around an island, reassure yourself that the
colour combinations are the right ones, that the route to the outside all
works correctly, etc. And if you want to try a different texture or colour,
that can be done at the flick of a switch, and you can look again.
We were astonished when we tried the 4-D technology out - it makes a
huge difference, especially to judging space and distances. We loved that
the design that we looked at featured a visual of the client's actual garden to
add verisimilitude. Its a fun, engaging experience that helps to create a true
partnership between designer and client, working together on the challenge
of creating the optimal result. As Andrew reflected, *We want the experience
of remodelling a space to be exhilarating and enjoyable as well as practical.’
Exceptional manufacturing
Spaces By Designs manufacturing partner is Daval Furniture, a British
company based in Huddersfield that uses 100% sustainable and
recyclable materials. We loved their Japanese charcoal oak finish that you
can see on display in the showroom. And the sizes of units can be bespoke,
again helping you to make optimal use of your space.
Moving through the showroom, there is a stylish bedroom display and,
at the back, a bathroom display that impressed us hugely with its classic
simplicity. Two brands are featured: the sleek, efficient lines of Duravit
and the classic elegance of Crosswater. ‘Bathrooms can be more intimate
spaces,’Andrew reflected, and often there is potential to explore more
adventurous colourways and textures.’
Complete design & installation service
‘We do everything from ideation to implementation. We look at things
from every angle, even before any planning applications: how one space
works with another, how each space can be optimised in terms of value
and appeal. You may also have a space that you are not quite sure what to
do with, and we can suggest/envisage some uses for it For one client the
solution was wine storage.’ Spaces By Design take a project through from
start to finish, so they can think in a joined-up way and ensure optimal
timeliness and value for money. As well as being stylish we want the design
to be timeless, so that it can last and be enjoyed for as long as possible.’

Rutland Shutters
Nicholas Rudd-Jones met with Steven Riordan, owner of Rutland Shutters, a leading local supplier
of shutters who started his business back in 2005
The benefits of shutters
We have all come to realise the benefits of
shutters over the years. They can offer privacy
whilst letting in light, they can add style and
elegance, they can be configured in several
different ways according to preference, and they
offer better warmth retention than roller blinds.
The huge value of experience
But, above all, what aesthetically pleasing,
well-working shutters need is an experienced
installer, and Rutland Shutters are pretty
much the most experienced of any shutter
company in the region. Owner Steven Riordan
has been advising on and fitting shutters for
most of his professional life. In that time he
has installed literally thousands of shutters
and has built up a body of experience that
means he is able to offer the best advice, avoid
pitfalls around choice and installation, and
create a finished product that delights in every
way. He has an easy manner and will be very
straightforward in his assessment.
‘Shutters can work well in any
type of property, provided that
you get the aesthetics and
practicality right*
38
‘Shutters have been my professional life for
20 years,’ he explained, ‘so I really know my
stuff by now. Shutters can work well in any type
of property, provided that you get the aesthetics
and practicality right. I would never, for example,
recommend a four-shutter solution in a three-
paned window.’ It is not surprising that 95% of his
work is repeat business or on recommendation.
Choice and lead times
Rutland Shutters can offer a choice of materials
- wood (lighter), MDF (very durable) and UPVC
(shorter lead time) - each with slightly different
properties; and a range of colours, although,
according to Steve, ‘most people end up
choosing a shade of white because that is best at
enhancing the light coming through the window.’
The Rutland Shutters team will come out
to your home, measure up, suggest the best
options and give you a no-obligation quote.
Lead time is typically 12 weeks, as the shutters
are manufactured in the Far East for maximum
economy, but there is also a British-assembled
option that is a little more expensive but can be
ready in only four weeks.
Rutland Shutters also has a business, Rutland
Curtains, which specialises in curtains, so if your
brief combines both shutters and curtains, then
they are a one-stop shop.

Green Wood By Design
In an exciting move fortheir family and business. Green-Wood By Design’s Etta and Jamie Arnold, specialist
makers of beautiful oak framed structures, have now opened a smart new office in Oakham on Mill Street
Tell us a little about your background and your move to Oakham
Jamie said: ‘I was always a carpenter by trade. At the start I worked at
Lincoln Cathedral as a heritage Joiner. This is where I realised how much
I enjoyed the traditional joinery rather than the modern workmanship
we see nowadays. It is at the heart of what we do, making sure our
customers have the best possible outcome, with whatever idea they
initially have when first enquiring about an oak frame.’
Etta added: ‘My passions are organisation and customer service. Jamie
and 1 first met through our work at a business networking event in North
Lincolnshire. Now here we are, married with two children. We put our skills
together and designed our work around what we both love.
‘We both decided to move to Oakham by total surprise. One of our
daughters was born with Down Syndrome and has undergone open
heart surgery. We arrived here as we have great access to Leicester Royal
Infirmary, where they have all the right resources to be able to look after
her heart. We knew the area and have worked here previously; however,
we hadn't planned to move here until we realised how accessible
Leicester’s hospital was. Our daughter is now fortunately very well and
thriving. She seems to have always led the way for us. We didn’t know we
needed Oakham until we moved here and fell in love with the place.'
What type of structures do you specialise in?
Jamie explained: ‘We specialise in oak-framed structures for the home, but
we also work commercially as well. We primarily work with oak, but we use
other materials too. These are artisan oak frames, so they are all handmade
traditionally using old jointing methods. As a carpenter myself. I can see the
details that sometimes get missed and 1 am very proud of how my projects
turn out. Working with oak is an art really, and it should be executed in the
same way. We deal with everything from porches to large garden rooms
and garages, even large portions of the main structure in a house!
‘Structures are an investment, so they need to be carefully planned and built
Oak is probably the most durable of materials in construction. It is used in so
many of the original carcasses for old buildings. With a heritage background,
I have also worked in restoration projects to repair the oak, so 1 have seen first-
hand how many centuries these buildings can last when done correctly.’
Is there anything you haven’t yet built but would love to?
‘A dream project would be to build some oak-framed stables. We would
really love to do that for somebody. With this article being in the issue
going out to Burghley Horse Trials, it would be great for anybody who
is interested in this to get in touch.’Jamie added: ‘I would like to make a
feature of somebody's yard, almost making it into a complex of stables
and useful buildings. My mum always had horses, so 1 think I could design
something really useful, as well as creating an amazing aesthetic.’
What’s the typical process that you go through with your customers?
Jamie said: ‘The first thing I would say is we give a lot of time to people. I am
not a rushed person, and, although we do often work with deadlines, I like to
make sure the drawing structurally works and that bit can sometimes take
time. Part of the reason we wanted to have such an inviting office was to
have a place for our customers to come and talk through things.’
Etta added: ‘Customer relations are really important to us, so thoroughly
understanding someone’s vision at the initial stages really helps - just like
an architect, I suppose. One thing we are looking to do in this area is get to
know more architects. I think it can be helpful to them to understand how
we work, so they can incorporate more oak into their builds. We can also offer a
CAD design service to anybody wishing to see their vision as a render, which
can really bring it to life. As a project goes through the motions, we are there
the whole way. I think it is vital that you have a place to come if you face any
issues or have any worries during a build. That is why we opened the office.’
Which areas do you cover?
‘We’d be delighted to work in any of the areas covered by this magazine -
Rutland, Stamford, the Nene Valley and Market Harborough - and we do
also work nationally.’
And how are you finding Rutland? Any favourite places so far?
‘We can already sense a huge feeling of community throughout the
businesses based around Mill Street and everyone who walks by. So many
people have already popped their heads in and asked what we are going
to be. The temptation to say something bizarre is huge! We told somebody
we were opening a creche when both our children were in when we first
started decorating. We've definitely discovered how tempting Cavells
can be, so that is a solid favourite of both of ours. Rutland as a whole,
and Oakham - it’s just a beautiful place to live and work, and we so look
forward to what the future holds for us here.’

Timber Windows of Stamford
Nicholas Rudd Jones met with Dean Goodwin, General Manager of The New Window
Company, to learn all about their wooden windows and doors
1HAVE been to many showrooms in my
time, but this is one of the best. Recently
created and well laid out, it has displays of
all the different types of wooden windows,
doors and fittings available. Opened
in 2023, it is part of an established and much
respected window company that has traded
in Lincolnshire since 1995, called The New
Window Company, which also offers UPVC and
aluminium windows.
Roy Wakeman OBE, who acquired and
developed TimberWindows.com, and owner of The
New Window Company, has revolutionised the
approach to the construction of wooden windows
and doors, which now gives them superior
guarantees, which outlast the guarantees of UPVC
and aluminium, whilst being a more natural
product and more in keeping in older buildings.
This new technology has turned the timber
window and door industry on its head. Through
combining Scandinavian techniques with German
engineering, the company has introduced high-
quality products manufactured from engineered
timber, a material never seen before in the UK.
This technique is based on using top-quality,
knot-free wood and laminating it for extra
robustness and longevity, also enabling the
preservative to fully penetrate the wood more
easily. A laminated product means there is little
chance of movement or distortion, which used
to be a feature of wood windows. Additionally,
the company uses the best double-glazing
technology (all the windows come double
glazed) and very precise manufacturing
techniques that will ensure a perfect fit.
Each window will be painted
inside and our to your exact
colour specification, with the
option to have different colours
on the inside and out'
Each window is individually made to fit into
the exact space required, and windows can be
made in various styles, designs and sizes. For
the customer, this means a product that they can
full rely on, backed up by a 30-year guarantee
against rot and infestation. The wood can be
hardwood or softwood according to preference;
the guarantee is the same regardless. Poor
performance is a thing of the past.
But the benefits don't end there - each window
will be painted inside and out to your exact colour
specification, with the option to have different
colours on the inside and out and even on different
features on the same side, so no awkward painting
from the outside after the window has been
installed. All paint work is covered by a 12-year
guarantee, even on south-facing aspects.
And if you own a listed building, the great
news is that the version with 14mm glazing
bars conforms with planning requirements
(you still need to get planning permission). So
you can now replace an old wood window with
a new one, and immediately get the benefits of
vastly improved heat retention because of the
double glazing and compression gaskets that
eliminate draft, and you get a window that is
already painted, so there are no additional costs!
And you can go at the speed that works best for
you and your circumstances: one window at a
time or several at once.
This really is an impressive company, and
well worth a visit

Davidsons Homes
Feel part of something better with Davidsons
Homes in Market Harborough and Oakham
ON the edges of Market Harborough, tucked away from sight of
the main roads, something wonderful is emerging. Local family
housebuilder Davidsons Homes is building three characterful
developments, bringing new houses and so much more to the
town. And just a little over half an hour away, Davidsons is bringing more
houses to the attractive market town of Oakham. At Oakham Pastures, the
collection of new homes currently starts at £394,995 for a three-bedroom
house, with several already reserved before the showhome opens its doors
for the first time later this year.
On one side of Market Harborough, Lubenham View is secreted away,
with a collection of two- to five-bedroom homes being built, and prices
currently starting from £374,995 for a three-bedroom detached property.
This development is close to beautiful countryside walks, but still close to
the lovely town centre.
On the other side, Davidsons Homes’ latest development is Davidsons
at Little Bowden. Hidden from the main road over the brow of the hill
overlooking the town, the development also consists of two- to five-
bedroom homes, with two-bedroom homes currently starting from
£284,995. With the Oat Hill and Cherry Tree pubs as their locals, and
Waitrose and Sainsbury’s just a short walk or drive away, this collection of
homes is once again incredibly handy for the town centre but still with all
the benefits of being close to countryside walks.
And, of course, a burgeoning community is also growing well at
Wellington Place, Davidsons Homes' development off Leicester Road.
Multiple infrastructure benefits are being brought to Market Harborough in
conjunction with this site, including play areas, a marina and much more.
James Bumham, Managing Director for Davidsons Homes South, said:
‘At Davidsons Homes, our ethos is to “feel part of something better”.
Of course, that means our characterful homes are designed with modern
families in mind, but it is so much more. It means better communities,
where people are proud of where they live, better locations, which is
demonstrated so well by our sites in Market Harborough and Oakham,
close to amenities but with links to the countryside too, and better sales
people, so buyers feel reassured and taken care of every step of the way.
‘We have been building in Market Harborough for a few years now, and
it is a place very close to our hearts. Both this town and Oakham are dream
locations to move to for many buyers - and it’s no wonder, with great
schools and a buzzing community spirit.
‘We are ready and waiting to welcome people to our sales centres,
so make sure you don’t miss out - visit now and see for yourself how
Davidsons is bringing “something better” to the town.’

Rutland Nursery
Rutland Nursery in Manton in Rutland has long been highly regarded for its impressive
range of plants, selling around a quarter of a million of them every year, with two thirds
of that number grown on site. New owners took over the business in 2019, and in 2021
they began a radical reworking of the Nursery, aiming to make the most of its incredible
location overlooking Rutland Water. In May 2023 the doors opened to a beautiful new
shop, restaurant and courtyard that have been wowing visitors ever since. Clare Rudd
Jones went along and was struck not only by the beauty of the new look Nursery but also
by the strong customer focus and the lovely ethos among the team
PHOTOGRAPHY: RUTLAND NURSERY, ANN GRAVES & JERRY WESLEY
LOCATED on the south shore of Rutland Water, the family-
run Rutland Nursery has been in existence for over 30 years,
growing and nurturing plants for gardens locally and beyond.
It has evolved in more recent years to become an inspirational
destination for plants, architectural shrubs and trees, houseplants, cacti
and homewares.
New ownership since 2019 has led to expansion with the wow factor - a
new shop, restaurant and courtyard built by Rutland’s Best Little Building
Co. It’s beautiful, high specification and very upmarket.
Even though the new-look Nursery takes the breath away, the team
are keen to stress that there’s a strong sense of continuity here. This is
even reflected in the Nursery’s logo, which features grapefruits and was
inspired by a pair of grapefruit trees that have been growing on the site for
decades, since they were planted from pips - their symbolic roots reflect
how much the Nursery’s long history is valued here.
What was the inspiration behind the new shop, restaurant
and courtyard?
They were born, really, out of a desire to make the most of the site, the
wonderful views across Rutland Water that only we were able to enjoy
behind the scenes before. As soon as we saw the view, we felt it needed to
be shared with our customers..
Where the restaurant is now located was previously a big polytunnel,
blocking the view, which seemed like such a shame. So nature inspired
us - the landscape out there. There’s so much wildlife up here towards the
water, too.
The views as the light fades in the evening are incredible - something
that we discovered working late into the evenings in the final weeks
prior to the big reveal. Our customers will also be able to experience this
too, as the nights draw in and the restaurant's closing time at 5pm is
after sunset. ►►

Tell us more about The View, your beautiful new restaurant...
The View has room for 100 customers, who can enjoy the panoramic views
across Rutland Water to the hills beyond. You can clearly pick out Burley on
the Hill opposite. It’s open Monday to Saturday 9am-5pm and 9.30am-4pm
on Sunday. Last food orders are taken one hour before closing, but hot and
cold drinks and cake are served all day. It’s probably useful to mention that
we don’t take table reservations - we wanted a more informal feeling. We
do have a buzzer system, so if you come along and the restaurant is full, we
give you a buzzer to keep on site and we’ll buzz you when a table is available.
This means that you’re free to browse the plants area and the shop while you
are waiting. As in the shop, we’ve got a focus on local producers where we
can - our bread is from Lily & Honey Bakery in Oakham, for example. All our
cakes are made on site by our bakery team led by the hugely accomplished
Emma Finden-Crofts of The Lotus Bakery. We’ve tried very hard to keep
our prices competitive, so that The View feels accessible.
We also have tables outside that are served by The Hut, a kiosk for drinks
and cakes. This area's popular with cyclists - we're on the cycle track here -
and walkers. It’s also great if you have a dog, although well-behaved dogs are
welcome in the restaurant and everywhere on site apart from the retail shop.
The new shop is very beautiful too. Were envious of your buying team...
Thank you - and yes, the buying is a lovely part of the job. We're immensely
proud to support our local producers, and we’re increasing our offering
all the time. We support local businesses such as Freckleface and artists
including Katie Cardew, Kate Please and Gilllian Durno. We also stock food
and drink, from honey to rapeseed oil to delicious gin, by some of Rutland’s
wonderful artisan food and drink producers.
Multum Gin Parvo is our own brand of gin. For that, at least one
ingredient in each gin variety is grown in Rutland, whether that’s
strawberries, lavender or elderflower. With our ‘Migration’ gin, for example,
the acorn and elderflower are from Rutland and the hibiscus comes from
Africa, so both end points of the osprey’s migration journey are covered.
How has the response been to it all?
It’s been really quite incredible. It’s like a wave of goodwill. The response
has been overwhelmingly positive, which is amazing for the whole team.
We value all our customers - there’s a wide range of ages, and some
are here for the new shop and restaurant, while for some the focus is very
much still on the plants. Some come for everything: to plant, shop and eat.
Our new offering looks beautiful and has been built to a high spec, but we
are not elite. We want everyone to feel valued and welcome here.
What about the plants side of things? Are you still busy growing?
Nursery is in our name and it’s still our number one focus. Nothing tells
our story, really, better than the plants we offer. Every year over 250,000
plants make their way from our growing houses and displays to gardens
and homes around Rutland and further afield - around two-thirds of them
nurtured and grown here in our own nursery. So yes, very much so.
What else do you have on site?
We also have a wellness and yoga space, The Loft, which is run by Tash
Davidson, who has moved here from South Street in Oakham. There are
classes, which you can see online at www.southstloft.co.uk, and mindfulness
workshops too. On the last Thursday of the month we run sessions called
Thrive & Bloom, free monthly wellbeing sessions led by local wellness
practitioners. Keep an eye on our Instagram to see what’s coming up.
We also have Hoggy’s Grill, where former cricketer Matthew Hoggard
(‘Hoggy’) runs grilling courses, which are hugely popular and fun.
Do you have big plans for the future to further surprise us?
For now, we feel it’s really important to take stock, connect with our
customers and enjoy what we have. We're passionate about the county,
and it’s wonderful when visitors tell us what we’ve created here is such
a positive development for Rutland. We just want to enjoy that with our
customers - new and old - for now.
I left feeling not only wholly impressed by the new build but also by the
incredible ethos among the team and the focus on sharing the best of what
they have. For gardeners, this is a growers'nursery and the excellent range
it has always offered is still here. And if plants are not your thing, you’ll find
gorgeous gifts, a beautiful restaurant with views to raise the spirits, plus
yoga, mindfulness, cookery workshops and more. Just fabulous.

Tinker and Fix
your tools
As we head into the autumn, it’s the perfect time to give our garden tools
a little bit of love to keep them working well. Edd from Rutland company,
Tinker and Fix, gives his top tips on how to maintain your secateurs
fter a summer of deadheading or cutting flowers and foliage to display indoors, your secateurs will definitely need
a bit of TLC. All secateurs benefit from a maintenance regime and, if you aren’t doing it regularly throughout the
year, just remember to at least do it in autumn! Japanese secateurs (such as Niwaki) are incredibly sharp, as they are
made from high carbon steel, but this does mean that they will tarnish (from tannins in plant sap, etc) and are likely
to have some surface rust. Stainless secateurs will be less affected, but will still have accumulated dirt and sap, and may have
some rust to remove too (remember it’s stain-less, not stain-free, of rust).
For either type of secateurs, it’s an easy three-step process - you can follow the steps below, or you can watch one of Edd’s
Instagram videos, where he shows you how to do it The same theory applies for smaller garden snips and larger shears too.
1 CLEAN YOUR SECATEURS
We recommend using a ‘Crean Mate'
scouring block (£15). Think of it like a mildly
abrasive eraser - soak it in a bit of water for a few
minutes, then rub it all over your secateur blades,
and it will clean up their surface. Ensure you work
across all of the cutting areas, as most good-quality
secateurs have a bypass mechanism where the
blade glides past the lower jaw, and you need to
clean it all to keep it working well. Keep your fingers
away from the edges. Just wipe away the residue
with a cloth to see the blade coming clean and
you’ll begin to hear the difference if you test them.
If there is surface rust on the secateur handles,
you can use the Crean Mate. For a more abrasive
option, use wire wool or a brass wire brush.
TINKER AND FIX TOP TIP!
We recommend cleaning and protecting your secateurs as regularly as you can, as this avoids
build up of rust and also reduces the risk of transferring any diseases around your garden via
your secateurs. Then, as and when needed, you can sharpen them. If you can get into a Tinker
and Fix maintenance mindset, you’ll have your garden tools for life (if you’ve bought good-
quality ones to begin with). Cleaning them off after each use, before you put them away, makes
a big difference and means that your regular maintenance checks become less arduous.
SHARPEN YOUR SECATEURS
USING A WHETSTONE
Invest in a small whetstone that can
easily be used on secateurs rather than using
a large one designed for kitchen knives. The
Niwaki 1000 grit whetstone is an all-purpose
one that suits most people (you can get coarser
or finer grit should you need to remove more or
get a finer polish). Find the angle of the secateur
blade by resting the whetstone on top in the
same direction. Then simply work the stone
using small circular motions using the same
consistent angle. Work over the entire blade to
just put the edge back on. Remember to turn the
blade over and lightly run the whetstone over it
to remove any burs from the other side.
3 PROTECT YOUR SECATEURS
Camellia oil is perfect - and the
preferred choice in Japan - because
it is pH neutral, or you could also use a light
machine oil. You only need a few drops onto
a sponge and you simply wipe it over the
secateurs. The sponge will hold the oil, so keep
this in your maintenance kit. You mustn’t skip
this step if using high carbon steel secateurs,
as it will act as a surface barrier, offering some
protection when you next use them.
Maintenance kits (including Crean Mate,
Sharpening Stone, Camellia Oil and
cleaning rag) are available for £38.50 from
tinkerandfix.co.uk, or each item can also be
bought individually.

Stamford Auction Rooms
Nicholas Rudd-Jones went to meet the dynamic team at
Stamford Auction Rooms (SAR)
THE first thing I notice when I arrive at Stamford Auction Rooms is the warmth of the welcome
- a hot drink offered, a comfy chair, an interesting story, owner Jessica Wall’s friendly dog
padding around and wanting to know who I am, even Jessica’s free-range eggs for sale at the
entrance. I was welcomed by Sophie Chapman, senior valuer, who has an expertise and passion for
‘all things that glitter'. She elaborated; ‘I’ve always been a bit of a pirate. From a young age, when I
first took a peep in my mother’s jewellery box, I have been bowled over by shiny things!’
There is typically a jewellery sale every quarter, and one of the recent ones was the fabulous Fisher
collection. Fisher was an incredibly stylish woman, with a discerning taste, and this was exemplified
in the notable collection of jewellery she acquired during her lifetime, together with very desirable
Georgian examples. The pieces within the collection were varied in design, period and value, and
included an exceptional diamond-studded Art Deco bracelet, a beautiful gem set and diamond
Georgian brooch, a selection of 19th-century mourning jewellery, and an artisan, contemporary-
designed 18ct white gold and diamond ring.
What makes the Stamford Auction Rooms special?
Jessica Wall, owner, explained to me; ‘We are approachable, friendly and really want to get to know
people. We always have the time for a good chat, particularly at our wonderful viewings, where there
is the time for many conversations and a chance to build a better understanding and appreciation of
key items of interest. We can then go on to realise magnificent prices for our sellers.
The story behind the collection is often fascinating in itself and raises interest in the auction.
Going out to people’s homes and understanding what lies behind a particular collection is my
favourite part of being an auctioneer, and it helps us to present items really well. We are then
stewarding a collection to make sure it gets to the right next owners, who will also fully appreciate it.’
Jessica continued; We recently presented the Patricia Hooper Ceramic Collection, and the owner
had collected pieces in a discerning manner, collating examples from every period of Worcester as well
as Ruskin’s ceramics with different marks. People are buying a piece of history, not just an object, and
these stories add significantly to appreciation and, ultimately, the hammer prices.’
Other recent private collection sales include ‘Gold & Silver Coins of the Late Francis Rainford’,
‘The Estate of Malcolm Evans; Clocks & Barometers’ and A Private Stamford Collection of Wine
& Whisky’.
Viewing days are usually two days before the sale, and the auction itself is held fully online to
maximise the reach to interested purchasers. For details of upcoming sales, see box right.
For the second year, Stamford Auction Rooms will have a stand at Burghley Horse Trials (see pl4-15).

to its present site in 1996. Outdoor learning has always been part of life
here, with regular ‘Welly Days’ held at the school’s original rural site in
the Rutland village of Brooke involving activities such as orienteering,
den building, wood carving and pond-dipping. Positive relationships and
pastoral care are strengths of the school, and initiatives such as a ‘buddy’
scheme, with children starting in Kindergarten being mentored by pupils
in Form VI, foster excellent relations within the school. Every day is an
open day at Brooke Priory. Come and see the real school in action via a
personal tour with the Headmaster, Duncan Flint.

Jonathan Teesdale describes the school as a ‘supportive family community’,
where pupils develop ‘a joy for learning and an enthusiasm for life’.
Copthill hold two open mornings each academic year, usually in autumn
and spring, with the next scheduled event on Friday 6 October, 9-nam.

children the freedom, space and time to be themselves and to get the
most from these highly formative years, when natural curiosity and the
willingness to express exactly what is on their mind is at its zenith...
‘Each child is an individual, allowed to be themselves here, with

Maidwell Hall has always had a strong academic reputation, sending
children to Uppingham, Oundle, Oakham, Rugby, Stowe and others further
afield. Outdoor activities and sport are strong, as is the music department.
The idyllic outside areas also set this school apart. As well as the lake,
pupils adore ‘The Wilderness’, an area of woodland behind the Hall, where
they go to play, and where their imaginations can run wild too.
During the year there are several whole school open mornings, the next

at the school, of whom 847 are full boarders. Academic results are
steadfastly excellent, with an average of 10% of pupils progressing
to Oxbridge each year (17 pupils had Oxbridge offers in 2022). Pupils

Anne Mette Hjortshoj
New work from the Danish studio potter at Goldmark in Uppingham from Saturday 16 September
PHOTOGRAPHY: JAY GOLDMARK
I laugh when I hear Anne Mette say “It’s just mud, it’s just clay," because
to me, as I cradle one of her pots in my hand, it is anything but,’ says
The Guardian food writer, TV presenter and author Nigel Slater, writing for
Goldmark’s Anne Mette Hjortshoj catalogue 2020.
Goldmark, Uppingham, is welcoming back one of the world’s greatest
and, frankly, nicest potters, Anne Mette Hjortshoj, for an exhibition of new
work at the gallery from 16 September. The show will run until 15 October.
A walk through film of the exhibition will be available 24/7 online at
goldmarkart.com from 15 September.
Anne Mette Hjortshoj began her career in ceramics with a student
apprenticeship to legendary potter, the late Phil Rogers in 1998. Rogers said
that he was apprehensive before he met her; with her arrival, however, he
knew instinctively that Anne Mette was not only humble and attentive but
greatly talented, displaying inner strength and determination that would
ensure a long and creative career.
Anne Mette has built three large kilns in her native Denmark at her
ramshackle farmhouse on the west coast of Bornholm - one is a two-
chamber wood-firing kiln built in September 2011. Though all her pots
exhibit her desire to challenge herself in glaze and form, her slab bottles
are certainly Anne Mette’s tour de force. Her pottery combines beautiful
aesthetics with a function befitting the hardiest domestic ware.
Nigel Slater backs this up, writing: 'Anne Mette’s bowls and dishes ask to
be used. They don’t want their life to be spent on a shelf, or behind glass.
Each bowl and dish seems have been made to earn its place, to have a
reason that goes beyond that of being a beautiful object. Her vessels,
if I may call them that, encourage you to pick them up, to be held in the
hand and to be of use. That is why they work so well for me.’
Despite her modest comment about ’just mud’, Ms Hjortshoj spares
nothing in her work to create memorable and life-enhancing ceramics. This
mixture of talent and commitment has led the Queen of Denmark to visit
her studio, whilst earlier this year Anne Mette found herself working way
outside her normal methods, as she was asked by the world-renowned
Noma restaurant to create identical cups (she does not normally do
identical!) for its exciting pop-up restaurant in Kyoto, Japan.
Practical, charming and simply beautiful, the works of Anne Mette
Hjortshoj are probably best described by Nigel Slater: ‘Pots that enrich my
life simply by being there.* This really is an exhibition not to be missed.
FIND OUT MORE: For those wanting to find out more about Anne Mette
Hjortshoj, she is in conversation with Mike Goldmark on www.gotdmark.tv.

Honest Attention, can also be viewed on www.goldmark.tv

Three Sides Out, One Way Home
(Malaya 1956 - ’58)
It was always understood: “no one volunteers for anything, ever... but sometimes, you re asked.”
The story of three men during the Malayan Emergency, each with very
different priorities: one of them had been sent there, one thought he
ought to be there, and one of them really should have known better!
From building an airfield in the jungle to re-opening the mission
house, from dump trucks to chicken soup; they’d be working with
trackers, traders, head-hunters and river-pirates.
From Singapore to RAF Butterworth to Frasers Hill: one of them
thought he knew what he was heading into, one of them had no
intention of helping anyone except himself... and one of them
came with an alarm clock and a satchel and was ready to save them all!
There were plenty of ways of getting home, but for one of their
number only one way to do it right... and it was going to take ALL
three of them going off the rails to get it done.

Oundle Festival of Literature:
Call of the Kingfisher
‘Call of the Kingfisher* is the enchanting nature-
writing debut from composer and wildlife
recordist Nick Penny. This love letter to a short
stretch of Northamptonshire’s River Nene
celebrates all the wild things that live there,
especially the kingfishers.
Nick Penny has walked the footpath by
the River Nene near his home at Oundle in
Northamptonshire for four decades. But a
chance encounter with a kingfisher on New
Year’s Day inspired him to observe the waterway
and woods nearby more closely. For a whole
year he gave the waterway all the time it asked
for. Other strands are woven around the elusive
feathered protagonist: explorations of local
history and landscape, from Roman and Bronze
Age sites to watermills and centuries-old stone
churches; homages to naturalists from Gilbert
White and John Clare to Dame Miriam Rothschild
and Sir Peter Scott, who developed his love for
nature while at Oundle School.
As a composer and wildlife recordist, Nick
has a deep interest in sounds in the natural
environment. From the precious song of
nightingales to recording the dawn chorus
among the bluebells, Nick introduces the
concept of soundscapes and sound walks,
reflecting on the importance of birdsong when
so much of modem life is affected by noise
pollution. The book includes access to a number
of high-quality birdsong recordings made
alongside the River Nene - audio soundbites
of nature’s riches, from kingfishers and
nightingales to owls and cuckoos.
This is a book about the things that can be
seen and heard when we approach nature with
patience and curiosity. It celebrates people
who have used that focus to help preserve
wildlife and pass on their knowledge to future
generations. Above all, ‘Call of the Kingfisher*
serves as a call to appreciate what we’ve got,
wherever we are, and to use our ears as much as
our eyes when we experience the natural world.
Nick Penny grew up in different parts of the
world before doing an arts degree at Oxford
University. He then set up his own workshop
making musical instruments, as well as
writing and playing the Paraguayan harp. After
moving to rural Northamptonshire, he became
fascinated by the birdsong in his local woods
and started to record it and use the sounds in
his own music. He has talked about nightingales
on BBC Radio 4’s Open Country, was interviewed
by Lauren Laverne for BBC Radio 6 Music’s
‘Supemature’ feature and has made many
appearances on local TV and radio.
Nick Penny will be giving a talk on his book
as part of the Oundle Festival of Literature, on
Friday 15 September, 7.45-8.45РГП. The venue
is the Great Hall at Oundle School, Oundle
PE8 4GH. For more information and to book,

Rutland Open Studios 2023
FOLLOW THE ART TRAIL 2023
Rutland Open Studios are back, on the weekends of:
• Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 September
• Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 September
• Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 September
Talented artists and makers will open their studios up to the general public
over the above three weekends in September. They are hoping that a
record number of visitors will take the opportunity to enjoy the wonderful
array of artistic talent throughout county.
Rutland Open Studios (ROS) is a flourishing community of artists,
craftspeople and makers, working in Rutland and its surrounding counties.
The scheme was set up back in 2007 to allow artists and makers in Rutland
to share their work with visitors and to showcase the array of artistic talent.
All the participating artists will be happy to welcome the public into their
workshops and studios to view and chat about their art. It provides an
opportunity for visitors to see their work and leam about the techniques
used and the passions that inspire these artists. There is a wide range
of media to see, including paintings, printmaking, pottery and ceramics,
sculpture, textiles, glass, jewellery, decoupage and photography.
Exhibitions are held in studios, homes, galleries and community halls
around the county. Some are solo exhibitors, while others gather together
to produce a collective exhibition of their work. It is all very informal, with
artists and makers pleased to either chat or leave people to look around
their working environment. There is absolutely no obligation to buy -
participating artists appreciate interested visitors taking the time to visit.
All information, including a full list of the artists exhibiting, where their
studios are based and when they’ll be opening, is on the Rutland Open
Studios website at www.rutlandopenstudios.co.uk. Information can
also be found in the ROS brochures, which can either be downloaded
from the website or can be found in many shops, pubs, hotels and
public information places throughout Rutland. Follow on Facebook
@therutlandopenstudios and support Rutland artists and makers who
work so hard. They would love to share their work with you.

spaces, including Northampton Museum and Art Gallery, 78 Derngate,

Stellify
Steve Roberts met up with Harriet Bryan and Anna I lughes, the two halves of the vocal/piano duo
Stellify. over coffee in Uppingham’s Five Elements cafe/deli to find out more about their music
THE name Stellify has its origins in an Old English Word for‘star’
and it certainly fits these dynamic, humorous young mothers. They
have six children between them, and I bring up the mother angle,
as it played a crucial part in the rather long gestation of Stellify.
Anna moved to Oakham, from Lancashire, when pregnant with her second
child in 2015 and counts herself lucky to have found the Mums with Babies
choir run by Harriet. It introduced Anna to a new Rutland social circle at
what could have been an isolating time as an expectant mother in a new
town. Anna subsequently joined the group's adult Oakham Show Choir,
part of the RYDA run by Sarah Bell. Harriet and Anna have been firm
friends ever since.
They both have individual music backgrounds and juggle being Stellify
with other jobs. Anna teaches piano and singing at primary schools in
Rutland - and she is also well known as a skilled portrait artist - whilst
Harriet, who studied music at college, has been singing professionally for
almost a decade and been a member of a number of choirs and groups.
Harriet also has another career she is the manager of Uppingham’s
revamped The Crown public house, which has developed as a hot music
venue since the pandemic.
Their mutual musical understanding and knowledge,
nurtured by their friendship, has led to their harmonies
being described as both beautiful and lush’
However, it is obvious that they are both passionate about Stellify and
have a lot of fun rehearsing and singing together. Their mutual musical
understanding and knowledge, nurtured by their friendship, has led
to their harmonies being described as both beautiful and lush. With a
stripped-back piano accompaniment from Anna, Stellify perform music
from a wide variety of music icons with radically different styles, including
Dolly Parton, Tina Tuner, Lady Gaga and - out of left field - American punk
band The Offspring.
Yet despite this impressive set list and their choir singing, it was not
until they were asked to sing together at a Jubilee Garden Party in 2022
that the two of them became a duo. A performance at a wedding, at
Normanton Church, quickly followed and Stellify have been performing
at private and public events ever since. ‘Anywhere that will have us,’ they
cheerfully chorus... in perfect harmony, of course!
Weddings are something that, like most of the regional musicians
1 have talked to, they would like to play more of because of the beauty of
the occasion. However, they are not averse to a rowdy Saturday night pub
gig either and can add a drummer and guitarist to their line up to beef up
what they call ‘our two ladies with a piano’ vibe. That vibe, however, seems
pretty good to me-
lt seems that many people are queuing up to book them. They have had
a string of dates across the region over the summer. They will once again
be the Christmas Eve entertainment this year for guests at The Falcon in
Uppingham, where they will play a mammoth three-hour set. If you can’t
get to one of their gigs, then tune in them on Peterborough’s Most Wanted
on Peterborough Community Radio on Monday 20 November, 7-9pm,
when you can hear them.
FIND OUT MORE: To book Stellify email stellifymusic22@gmail.com.
You can also find and listen to them on Instagram @stellifymusic and

‘Raids, Rallies & Reserves’ - 1941
"Oh don't worry Sarg, he's just there to stop the others falling out!"
Blasted Blitz! Freezing winds and no overcoat...
and now the Americans were coming, oh cripes!
The village was gearing up to 'get it done.’ The Germans might have brought the Blitz, but the farmers still needed
to work on. Never mind the blasted news and the winter winds, the scrawny village errand-boy called Gertie had
his own inimitable way of inspiring action. "Good grief, Gertie, I thought you had more sense than that!"
Doug did his best, but his 'lovely lady’ still managed to plough up the grazing meadow and send a piece of
wingtip skipping the hedge to knock Riggs from his post. The RAF pilot walked away with nothing more than
a few scratches and a sandwich, leaving Riggs with two broken legs and Gertie playing cupid.
The aeroplane was a wreck, the tractor could be repaired, but the ambulance had done more damage coming
through the village. It was going to take more than sweet tea and biscuits to put that right; and whilst they were
at it Gertie's theory on how they were going to win the war managed to open a few eyes into the bargain!
Matters came to a head with the news coming through about Pearl Harbour. MrTor went missing down a rum
bottle and there were a dozen geese to throttle, pluck and deliver. The best Gertie could do was feed the pigs
and drag the delirious farmer along with him. It wasn't regulation by any stretch of the imagination and by the
time they were heading for the hospital they had an electric shock, a broken hand and a case of pneumonia
onboard. As for Sarg at the gate wondering about that officer? Gertie could explain everything.
All three books in the trilogy are available from Lincolnshire Life Online Shop and
Walkers Bookshops (Stamford and Oakham), or directly from the 'scrawny author'

Thetford Farm Barn
Wedding Venue
An unforgettable wedding starts with an unforgettable venue
HETFORD Farm Bam is a breathtaking mix of traditional and
contemporary elegance, staying true to the nature of the buildings
and creating a unique atmosphere. Available all year round,
these beautifully restored 18th-century Grade П-listed brick-and-
stone barns sit in the heart of a working arable farm in the Lincolnshire
countryside just northeast of Stamford, with original architectural details
and versatile, beautifully modernised internal and external spaces. They are
the perfect blank canvas on which to create the wedding of your dreams.
The setting is totally private and uniquely yours, so you have absolute
control over time and space from start to finish. No one will be waiting
in the wings, and there won’t be any other gathering in a nearby room.
Yours will be the only wedding at the venue during your booking - perfect
for just settling in, relaxing and enjoying this beautiful, romantic space.
Whilst classic, the place will also have a contemporary vibe, which
means you can create exactly the ambience you desire - it is the finest of
blank canvases. You decide which path you want to go down. From the
New wedding venue: Thetford Earm Bam
7he setting is totally private and uniquely
yours, so you have absolute control over
time and space from start to finish’
Left; the spectacular Ceremony Hall.
Below: the Ceremony Hall and Dining Room.
Ceremony Hall, Dining Room and Enclosed Courtyard to The Hayloft (the
groom’s preparation area), the Dressing Room and White Horse Bar, it is
the perfect mix of traditional and contemporary elegance.
Ceremony Hall
Without a doubt the ceremony is one of the most important parts of
the big day, and nowhere could be more fitting to exchange your vows
than the Ceremony Hall. This lovingly restored granary barn (shown
in our main photograph above) can accommodate 200+ guests and
has an impressive 20m-long central aisle - perfect for that grand
entrance. The interior has a warm and intimate setting, with exposed
original brickwork, an impressive double entrance from the courtyard
and a beautiful stone floor - an absolutely fabulous backdrop for those
inspirational photographs.
The Dining Room
With its original pitched roof, contemporary extension and views onto
the Wildflower Meadow, the Dining Room is the perfect place to host your
wedding breakfast. A stunning building that leads directly out onto a
beautiful stone patio and the Enclosed Courtyard, letting the outside in.
For celebrations with 400+ guests, it’s a perfect partnership with marquees
and tipi tents to create a unique and versatile space.
The Wildflower Meadow
You can also choose to exchange your vows amidst the whispering grasses
of the Wildflower Meadow. A beautiful rural landscape under Lincolnshire
skies, this unique space provides the perfect setting for a more intimate,
open-air exchange of vows.
Versatile capacity
The Ceremony Hall and The Dining Room can accommodate 200+
guests and with the addition of bespoke marquees that cover and
connect The Courtyard and The Dining Room, there is capacity for 400
guests. But it is also just as comfortable with 120 guests. Conferences are also
very suited to this venue, which scores highly on space, tranquillity and style.
Thetford Farm Bam is available from spring 2024, when the works will
be completed, with on-site accommodation available from 2025.

Local business
There are 365 days a year to party!
Local Living caught up with Debs Pennell, who shared the exciting news that she is now at the
helm of Stamford Tableware Hire, renting out china, glassware and barware for events and
parties around the region. She offers delivery, collection - and all washing up back at base!
ast month Stamford Tableware Hire changed ownership, as Debs
Pennell, a popular local caterer, took over the management
from Rebecca Short. This well-established company hires out
glassware, china and barware forevents and parties around the
area. Rebecca said: Debs has a wealth of knowledge within the hospitality
industry, and seemed a great person to approach when I was thinking of
selling the business. Having run Stamford Tableware Hire for six years,
1 am excited to be handing over the reins to Debs, so I can concentrate
more time on my busy floristry business, Parsons Weddings & Occasions.'
Stamford Tableware Hire comes with a great reputation; regular clients,
such as caterer Rosie Holt from The Stamford Kitchen, use the tableware
hire at many events around the area. From afternoon tea stands to quality
china plates and bowls, smart modem cutlery and a good range of glassware,
Stamford Tableware Hire has something to fit most clients’ requirements.
Mr Molecey's Marvellous Mill at West Deeping, a fabulous local wedding
and events venue, often requires hire for their events. Owner Graham said:
‘Sometimes we just need an extra few Champagne flutes for welcome drinks,
and for other events we may need to hire in china and tableware. Stamford
Tableware Hire offer a great service and really high-quality items.'
Debs jumped at the opportunity to buy Stamford Tableware Hire, as she felt
it was a perfect partner to her catering business, The Canape Cart. She said,
‘I have used Stamford Tableware Hire for many years, and their products are
of a really high quality, which creates a beautiful setting for any event. 1 am
planning to add new lines over the coming months, which I believe will be
in demand from local chefs and event planners. 1 am also open to requests
for new items that could be popular for events and smaller weddings.’
As we all know, it has not been the perfect summer for parties, as
it seems we cannot rely on the British weather to join in. If you are
entertaining in a village hall, at a historic house venue, in a marquee,
private residence or an office building, you may require glasses and
tableware for your event, and this is where Stamford Tableware Hire can
help. Debs offers a delivery and collection service, and all washing up is
taken care of back at base.
It’s an exciting business, which offers event organisers, party planners,
corporate and private clients a simple solution to their table setting
requirements or glassware needs.

Post-summer s<in care N00BU6M’0*
COHSUU*1»**
-I I—>
at Ftawtess Body
Neeta Matharu, Clinic Director at Flawless Body in Stamford, highlights some ofthe best
treatments for this time of year, as we move from summer into autumn
AS we shift from summer into autumn, our skin often needs
a helping hand to restore its natural radiance and glow. If
you’ve been lucky enough to have enjoyed a sunny holiday
this summer, your skin may be lacking in moisture and feeling
in need of rejuvenation by now. But there’s no need to panic because
September is an ideal month to begin a journey of self-care, pampering
the skin with a variety of transformative treatments, including laser
therapy, skin resurfacing, microneedling, radio frequency and advanced
facials such as HydrO2Facial. It’s also a fantastic time of year to start a
course of laser-hair removal.
One clinic for all your needs
, Post-summer skin may show signs of sun damage,
such as sunspots, uneven skin tone and other
pigmentation, as well as fine lines. These
concerns can all be effectively treated using
the advanced technology available at
Flawless Body.
Laser therapy, which is renowned for
its versatility, can tackle an array of post-
summer skin woes. Whether your concern is
fine lines or pigmentation, lasers can gently
and precisely target problem areas, stimulating
the skin’s natural healing process. By opting for
laser treatments at this time of year, you can harness
the cooler months to maximise results while minimising
sun exposure.
Skin resurfacing, another powerful option, works wonders in
revitalising tired, dull and tired skin. This treatment gently removes
damaged skin layers, revealing a fresh, youthful complexion beneath.
And for those looking to enhance their skin’s texture and promote
collagen production, microneedling offers a safe and effective solution.
Tiny needles create controlled micro-injuries, stimulating the body’s
healing response and encouraging the growth of new collagen and elastin.
Radio frequency (RF) treatments provide a non-invasive way of tightening
and firming the skin. RF therapy promotes collagen remodelling and overall
skin rejuvenation, which helps to contour and lift sagging areas.
Neeta recommends HydrOaFacial as the best advanced facial for the
end ofthe summer. Dubbed the ultimate #fivestarfacial, it is a seven-in-
one, multi-technology device, which can treat an array of skin concerns,
such as anti-ageing, dehydration, congestion, and dull or pigmented
skin. Its technologies are hydro peel, exfoliation, oxygenation, skin lifting
(for improved product penetration), radiofrequency (for skin tightening),
ultrasound (for improved hydration), and fire and ice. This means that Neeta
and her team can offer a fully prescriptive approach with these facials,
combining the most appropriate technology for each client’s skin type and
concern. The results are glowing, brighter, more youthful-looking skin.
Rawless Body also offer laser hair removal using The LightSheer®,
a state-of-the-art diode laser, which ensures safety for all skin types
and is clinically proven to be more effective and less painful than IPL.
By utilising two different hand pieces and technologies, it enables the
team at Flawless to customise treatments for face and body.
Bespoke treatments for every client
As with any skin care journey, seeking the guidance of an experienced,
qualified skincare professional is vital. At Flawless Body, expert in all
things skin, Neeta and her team create bespoke treatment plans for each
client, combining laser, resurfacing, microneedling, bespoke facials and
RF therapies to address individual skin concerns effectively. And at the
start ofthe journey, Neeta uses a state-of-the-art skin scanner to see what
is going on under the top layer of the skin. By using this alongside all the
other information from the consultation, she can create a truly bespoke
treatment programme for each client.
Neeta’s expert advice will include essential post-treatment skincare
recommendations, ensuring that your skin maintains its new-found
radiance throughout the autumn and beyond. By caring for your skin
diligently, you can continue to glow with renewed confidence, enjoying the
benefits of these transformative treatments long after summer has ended.
So, as you start thinking of the new season, remember that the beauty
of renewal is within your reach. Embrace the transformative power of these
advanced treatments this September, and embark on a journey of self-care
and rejuvenation. Your skin deserves the best, and you deserve to glow
with radiant confidence through autumn and beyond.

Autumn wellness
Looking to press reset after a busy summer?
Here are some wellness tips that will keep you on the right track
Stay active: Enjoy the early autumn weather by engaging in outdoor
activities, such as walking, cycling or running (Couch to 5k is a great app).
Balanced diet: Incorporate nutritious seasonal produce such as apples,
pears and squash into your meals. Focus on nourishing, warming foods.
Stay hydrated: Even though it’s cooler, don’t forget to drink enough water
to stay hydrated. Apps such as Waterllama help you to track consumption.
Warm beverages: Try to keep caffeine to a minimum - switch instead
to herbal teas to stay cosy and relaxed. To make your own, use around
5 leaves (eg of mint) and leave them to steep in hot water for 5 minutes.
Self-care: Try to set aside time for self-care routines such as reading,
mindfulness or taking relaxing baths to reduce stress and anxiety. It may
feel like a luxury, but you will be more efficient when a little recharged.
Get sunlight: Spend time outdoors to soak in natural sunlight, which can
help regulate your circadian rhythm and boost mood, as well as ensuring
your Vitamin D levels are sufficient.
Prioritise sleep: Longer nights are an opportunity for more restful sleep.
Stick to a consistent sleep schedule.
Layer clothing: Dress in layers to stay comfortable, as temperatures
fluctuate throughout the day and will be cooler into the evening.
Boost immunity: As flu season approaches, include immune-boosting
foods such as garlic, ginger and citrus fruits in your diet.
Embrace expertise: It may be that you need extra support in your wellness
journey, so don’t shy away from booking professional support, whether
it’s for a regular dental or eye check or for a holistic treatment.
Remember, these are just general tips, and what works fbryou
might vary. Listen to your body and adjust your routine accordingly.

M0RPHEUS8 - EXPERIENCE IT NOW AT ELYSIA
MORPHEUS8 is a powerful subdermal fractional needling and radio frequency (RF)
treatment offering extraordinary proven results. ELYSIA is the only clinic in the area
offering this advanced treatment
'The lines on my
face have softened
significantly and what
I love about it most
is how many people
are noticing and
saying "What have
you had done to your
skin?"and then I tell
them it's all a natural
treatment and thanks
to Morpheus8.'
Judy Murray
How does it work?
It works by the needles at the tip of the
device penetrating deep into the skin and fat,
essentially causing trauma that requires repair;
this then results in skin tightening, lifting
and contouring by restoring natural collagen
and elastin. By kickstarting natural collagen
production, the treatment results in a smoother,
more contoured appearance.
The fact that the body is repairing itself is
something that Lisa at Elysia is hugely passionate
about. Judy Murray picks up on this point too:
'The lines on my face have softened significantly
and what I love about it most is how many people
are noticing and saying “What have you had done
to your skin" and then I tell them it's all a natural
treatment and thanks to MorpheusB.'
What is so special about it?
MorpheusB is the most advanced on the
market. The needles can penetrate deeper
and it's the way in which the energy is
simultaneously delivered into different layers
of the skin which makes it more effective and
causes minimal trauma on the surface.
Who is a good candidate for
Morpheus 8?
Anyone who wants to improve fine lines, wrinkles
and skin laxity could benefit from MorpheusB.
It's perfect for lifting and tightening the jowl
area and neck and you can work incredibly
close around the eye area - resulting in visible
rejuvenation. The whole skin area looks healthier
and it works on a wide range of skin types.
I think I've seen it in the press and
on social media...
It has received incredible press. As mentioned, it
has been used on Judy Murray, and it has many
other famous devotees.
Kim Kardashian calls it 'a game changer', while
British tv star Amanda Holden says: 'The results
have been absolutely amazing... I'm more than
happy to shout from the rooftops about how
brilliant this new treatment is. It's the best hour's
investment for looking at least 5 years younger.'
Hollywood actor Eva Longoria recently became
InMode's Global Brand Ambassador as a
result of her own positive experience of their
technologies, including MorpheusB.

What Lisa's clients at Elysia say
about Morpheus8
'Have had SO MANY comments about my
skin! AMAZING treatment'
'My skin has never been happier since
starting MorpheusB and a great skin
regime at Elysis. Thank you.'
Td tried everything for the lax skin above
my knees. Nothing had worked until Lisa
suggested MorpheusB. I saw a difference after
the second treatment and, it's still improving...'

Buddy the sprocker
Dr Tim Gray explains how specialist training transformed the behaviour of a chaotic young sprocker
Words & photo: Amander Meade
DESPITE vowing never to have
another dog after the passing of
their Labrador. Dr Tim Gray and his
wife Annabelle were encouraged to
explore the rehoming option by their daughters.
‘Presented with a cute image of a picture-perfect
sprocker (a springer/cocker spaniel cross), we
made enquiries through an online rehoming
charity and found out that Buddy (then 9 months
old) was available. His young owners had two
very small children and, while a pretty puppy
had seemed appealing, they couldn’t cope with
his energy and boisterous nature, so we found
ourselves in the car and off to Chesterfield to
have a conversation and see if he would be
suitable for us.’ Keen to be rid of Buddy as soon
as possible, Buddy’s owners cut the vetting
process short, and Tim and Annabelle found
themselves taking him home the same day.
Earty days
A couple of days later, the couple thought they
might have made a huge mistake, as Buddy was
entirely untrained, extremely lively and a real
handful in the house. ‘I knew I had to act swiftly,
so contacted Holwell Canine Club in Melton,
where we attended basic puppy classes to teach
Buddy how to walk, heel, sit, stay and respond
to recall. With the basics mastered, there was
great improvement, but he was still hugely
energetic and, like most dogs bred for working, it
was clear he needed more mental stimulation.’
Scent training
Tim discovered that 20 minutes of daily ‘brain
work’, such as intensive scent training, can be
as beneficial as an hour's physical exercise and
that for a dog like Buddy a combination ofthe
two would be ideal. Dog expert and qualified
trainer, Donna Wright of Meadow View Training
in Braunston came highly recommended, and
Tim and Buddy joined a small group of six
beginners to start the process.
‘Donna advocates repeat and reward-based
training, where the dogs are encouraged to
recognise a scent and associate it with a reward.
Using all kinds of pipes, tunnels and other
equipment in which to hide the item with the
“scent”, the dogs leam to search, find and
then receive their reward. There are stages of
development where the “scent” gets smaller
and the search area gets larger to challenge their
abilities. Olfactory distractions are introduced,
such as the floor being covered with obstacles,
and, in the later stages, even the handlers don’t
‘ I would thoroughly
recommend scent training
for any dog but particularly
working dog breeds orthose
with lots of energy*
know where the “scent” is hidden. It was clear
from the start that Buddy loved the training and
responded really well. It was the perfect task-
based fun for him.’
As the weeks progressed, the challenges
become more difficult, including some retrieving
work and locating of scents underwater and,
of course, there is ‘homework’ practice to
undertake between classes. The training
process for domestic dogs is very similar to that
used to train military, police and search-and-
rescue dogs. *You can go on to really advanced
training and competitions if you wish, but
Buddy is essentially a pet, and my reasons for
the training were solely to keep him happy and
occupied. The training has improved not only his
confidence, but his behaviour improved hugely
now that he is more relaxed having used up all
his surplus energy. He’s perfectly well behaved
around the house now. When we are walking,
nine times out often now he will respond to his
commands to sit, wait or come back.
‘I would thoroughly recommend scent training
for any dog but particularly working dog breeds
or those with lots of energy. I’d also recommend
Donna as an expert trainer - her methods
are highly effective, and her love of dogs runs
through everything she does. It’s changed our
whole experience and helped Buddy become a
much happier dog.’

Discover Rutland
Food & Drink Week
Rutland is well known for being a rural county
bursting with fantastic food and drink producers,
alongside an array of exceptional places to
eat, hence its popular adage: the County of
Good Taste. Discover Rutland celebrates this
with a collection of events, special menus and
promotions throughout the Discover Rutland
Food & Drink Week: Saturday 23 to Saturday
30 September.
There will be a range of events all week, starting
with Wine Tasting & Light Lunch at Hambleton
Hall on 23 September, when Sommelier
Dominique will introduce you to a flight of 7 fine
wines from the new Spanish wine regions.
Browse the Artisan Market at Rockingham
Castle on Saturday 23 and Sunday 24
September, showcasing a range of food, drink
and craft produce on the stunning grounds,
offering superb views over the Welland Valley.
Oakham will play host to the popular Rutland
Food & Drink Festival, organised by Carolyn
Acton Events, on Sunday 24, from iiam-4pm.
Oakham Castle's grounds will be bustling with
activities, and there will be food, drink and craft
stalls inside the castle, around the grounds and
throughout the Market Place and Mill Street.
Beer lovers should book themselves a spot
at The Olive Branch on Thursday 28 September
for their Round Comer Brewery Beer Dinner, an
evening with a curated 6-course menu to match
the range of classic, rare, seasonal and special
beers inspired by the character of the brewery’s
thriving agricultural home.
Throughout the week you can enjoy the nature
trail around The Rutland Vineyard near Ketton,
or challenge yourself at the adventure golf at
The Dairy Bam Cafe, where it’s almost obligatory
to indulge in tasting one of their tempting
homemade ice cream flavours. Pop into one
of the region’s fantastic farm shops, from the
smaller premises of Farmer Lou’s near Exton
and Northfield Farm near Cold Overton, to the
larger New Lodge Farm (see below) or Gates Farm
Shop. Support local producers, lower your food
miles and eat scrumptious meals.
There will also be a range of promotions and
special menus around the county, including
at Ovation Wine & Spirit Bar, The George and
Warner’s Traditional Sweets in Oakham, The Lake
Isle in Uppingham and Farmer Lou’s near Exton.
Discover Rutland will also be launching the
new Rutland Food & Drink Trail, which highlights
the range of fantastic producers, eateries and

Sunday lunch at
New Lodge Farm
Words: Bridget Steele / Photo: Tim Steele
Having been at New Lodge Farni for a delicious
breakfast one Sunday morning over the summer,
we noticed lots of reserved signs going on the
tables for Sunday lunch - making us keen to
come back for a farmhouse roast. We had booked
in on a wet, grey Sunday, making comfort food
very appealing. The roast menu is fuss free,
and we were asked to order our preferred meat
on booking. There are several choices of meat
every Sunday, always beef then other meats from
lamb, chicken or pork, plus a vegetarian option.
On the day we booked, the beef was offered
along with lamb, so we tried the two between us.
Everything is cooked to order, which I like, and
the food was brought to the table piping hot with
all the trimmings including crispy roast potatoes,
roast parsnips, baked leek gratin with a crunchy
cheesy topping, green beans, carrots, proper
gravy and, of course, a giant Yorkshire pudding.
As expected, the food was fabulous, with lots of
meat, and it was well presented.
We were delighted to find locally brewed
Digfield Ales were available, as well as a wide
choice of wines and other beverages. There is a
good choice of homemade desserts too, though
being so full we didn’t indulge. The strawberry
Eton Mess, sticky toffee pudding, cheesecake
and the apple strudel all sounded delicious.
This is clearly a very popular Sunday lunch
spot for people staying at the farm as well as for
visitors - it’s definitely advisable to book - and
it is great value at £15.95 per head. The setting is
very relaxed, and the kitchen offers comfort food
at its best! Needless to say, we are planning a
return visit soon.

The new seasonal menu at
The White Hart in Ufford
Since its transformation under new ownership, this beautiful pub has gone from
strength to strength. Nicholas and Clare Rudd-)ones were invited along to taste the
fabulous new autumn menu
We felt very honoured to be amongst the first to try out the pub’s
new autumn menu. We went along to find the pub in very
good health, full of diners and drinkers on an early mid-week
evening, with the sun pouring in through the large door of the main
bar and a general air of holiday contentment. The renovation, by Annie
Allison, looks beautiful. So stylish. And the overall feeling is glorious.
THE IMPRESSIVE TEAM
Dan Wade, General Manager, has been in post now for six months and
is key to the operation, with his bonhomie and a sixth sense for when
something is needed at a table.‘We have a fabulous front-of-house team,'
he told me.‘They make the place tick and ensure our customers are
delighted with their experience.'
He has recently been joined by Head Chef James Tipton, who has
brought significant culinary skills to the kitchen, where he now manages
a team of five. His background was in food operations and training, so he
is able to bring good systems and people skills to the kitchen too. James
grew up in the Vale of Belvoir and has a great affinity with our region
and country values.
COOKING PHILOSOPHY
James talked to us about his cooking philosophy: ‘Seasonal food is close
to my heart, and going forward we will be offering menus that change
with the seasons and make the most of local produce and local suppliers.
Right now, for example, we are using plums from the garden in a couple
of our desserts. All the herbs come from the garden, and much else
besides, including elements of the Forager’s Salad. And we have started
sourcing our meat from nearby Willowbrook Farm, which has a fantastic
reputation for quality.
‘I want to use the best ingredients and make delicious dishes, but still
stay with our feet firmly on the ground as a pub, using tried-and-tested
old-fashioned techniques, for example, braising meat, which requires a
lot of preparation time.’
James is very thoughtful about cooking and recognises it to be a subtle
blend between creativity and technique, underpinned by the consistency
and commitment of a fabulous kitchen team, without whom nothing
would be possible.
NEW AUTUMN MENU
The autumn menu will be launched at the start of September. We tasted a
selection of starters, mains and desserts.
STARTERS
‘Eggs on Toast’. James has given a tongue-in-cheek title to a dish that
frankly amazes. Two soft-boiled quail’s eggs and caviar with dill cream and
caper pearls. Light and delicious.
Rissole Fish Cake. Made differently and tasting so much better than the
traditional fish cake, with the potato and fish in separate layers and a
beautifully crispy, gluten-free crust Homemade tartar sauce on the base
and a perfectly formed yolky egg atop.
MAINS
Braised Ox Cheek If there were a prize for the most delicate, melt-in-your-
mouth meat then this would surely be a contender. Complemented with
hispi and red cabbage, mash with chives and onion, bone marrow gravy and
a dash of celeriac sauce. This dish epitomises great pub food. A hearty treat.
Red Radicchio. This is a vegan dish with texture and bold flavours.
Radicchio, marinated grilled artichoke, capers and pink grapefruit are
set off by a burnt pepper sauce with almonds - great for dipping.
Cod in Butter, with Clams, New Potatoes, a Rich. Delicious Bouillabaisse
and a Dill Top from the Garden. Classic, beautifully cooked and presented.
DESSERTS
These are all made in house and are a speciality of the team.
Chocolate Orange Tart, with Fresh Orange, Cointreau, Ice Cream and
Seasonal Fruit If you still have space left by the time you get to dessert, then
this is the choice for you! Rich and indulgent.
Baked Seasonal Fruit Cheesecake. The top of the cheesecake is bruleed,
and it comes with clotted cream and seasonal fruit. Subtle perfection, we
would order this one every time. A triumph!

The Olive Branch
Cool flavours for
an Indian Summer
The Olive Branch team share a recipe and
bring us up to date with their news
IN the UK, we tend to get a few hot, sunny days in September and even
October. This tasty recipe is perfect for those days, which we hope will
come soon. Showcasing vibrant Tomato & Red Pepper Gazpacho, silky
Avocado Mousse and delicate Norfolk Crab, it’s a harmony of flavours
perfect for warm, bountiful late-summeroreven autumn days, when you
crave something refreshing and delightfully simple to prepare. If it’s chilly,
you can warm the soup up. We get many of our tomatoes from our Paddock
opposite the pub - and this is an excellent recipe if you have a glut of
tommies or need to use some peppers lurking in the back of the fridge. Enjoy!
Kitchen Design Award - Winner at the Ceda Grand Prix Awards 2023
Do you remember the story? A fire destroyed our old kitchen in December
2021. We rolled up our sleeves, made do with a portacabin for almost a year,
and kept the good food rolling! Then we teamed up with our phenomenal
partners at CNG Food Service Equipment, who were instrumental in
transforming ourvision into reality. Finally, in November 2022, we proudly
threw open the doors of our gleaming new kitchen. Our new kitchen is the
beating heart of our pub, so to be the winner of the Design Project £100-
250k category of the Ceda Grand Prix Awards 2023 means a lot!
Healthy Sleepover Breakfast?
We took this picture of our Summer
Breakfast Buffet recently - it’s
something we serve to our overnight
guests who stay at Beech House.
Of course, heartier breakfasts are
available too, but sometimes a lighter
option is just what the doctor ordered
- especially ifyou’ve indulged a
little the night before (that’s what our
Recovery Station is for - at the back of
the breakfast table)!
We have some rooms at Beech House available over the coming
weeks and months, so if you’d like to try our dinner, bed and breakfast
experience, book here or call us on 01780 410355. We hope to see you at
our breakfast table soon, whether it’s with a bowl of muesli or a full English.

We’re recruiting! We’re on the hunt for a Restaurant Manager and
a Head Barperson. Send your CV and a cover letter by email to:

Food & drink
Ascough’s Bistro
Nicholas & Clare Rudd Jones had just completed a three day trip on a Boutique Narrowboat
from Union Wharf in Market Harborough and were feeling ravenous. They walked down the
hill into town, stopped for a drink at The Three Swans and then repaired to Ascough’s Bistro
ASCOUGH’S BISTRO was established
in August 2005 by owners Chris
and Abby Ascough and has long
since become Market Harborough’s premier
eating establishment.
But it is not what you might expect from a
bistro - no nooks and crannies, vintage oak
tables and candles stuck into old Chianti bottles,
but rather a very contemporary establishment
with modern art on the walls and lots of space.
In fact, the place has a cosmopolitan vibe about
it. And the food is of a very high and refined
standard, well above what you might expect
from a bistro.
We were welcomed to our table by a friendly
waiter, who we got chatting to. It turned out
he was about to go on the self-same canal
boat that we had been on, and we were able
to offer him some tips and ideas based on our
new-found ‘expertise’.
The dinner set menu, £28 for 2-courses and
£35 for 3, offers very impressive value for the
quality of the food, and we chose from that.
There is also a taster menu (6 courses, £48),
a lunch menu (2 courses £20,3 courses £27)
and a vegan menu.
For starters Clare chose the Brulee Chive
Custard, Charred Spring Onion. Yeast Roscoff,
Pickled Walnut & Nigella, a vegan dish that
she really enjoyed. I went for the Seared King
Scallops, Tomato Carpaccio, Granny Smith and
Parmesan, with Apple. Gin & Elderflower Gel.
An absolute delight... very light and fragrant.
For the mains, I opted for Rack of English
Lamb, Red Pepper Ketchup, Wasabi Panisse,
Bresaola and Saffron Kohlrabi with Sauce
Robert. 1 loved this dish, full of flavour, not
too filling though, and beautifully presented
in fine dining style. Clare again went for
the vegan option: Baked Celeriac, Pea and
Hazelnut Cassoulet, Crispy Pastry with Pomme
Mousseline. Baked Celeriac is a favourite of hers,
and it didn’t disappoint.
I was greedy and had a dessert: Sticky
Jamaican Rum Cake, Raisin Cheesecake Ice
Cream, Ginger Fudge Sauce with Toffee Apple -
rich, indulgent and delicious. 1 had read about it on
TripAdvisor, and several diners had recommended
it, a good tip, I certainly needed nothing more
after that! Clare enjoyed the Petits Fours - dainty,
lovely to look at and just the right sweet hit.
Everything from bread to ice creams and
sorbets are prepared on the premises, and well-
known local suppliers such as Duncan Murray
Wines are used wherever possible.

A canal boat holiday with
Boutique Narrowboats
Clare & Nicholas Rudd Jones took a three day trip with Boutique
Narrowboats exploring the Grand Union Canal from Market
Harborough. Here is a diary of their trip
A CHANCE mini-break on a canal boat inspired the creation of an entire business for the
husband-and-wife team behind Boutique Narrowboats. Aaran Chapman and Sharon Peach
enjoyed a brief two-night stay on a narrowboat back in 2016. They went on to create a whole
mini fleet of high-end holiday hire boats, which now run from Union Wharf in Market Harborough.
‘We were complete novices but adored the whole experience of canal boating around Market
Harborough,’ says Sharon. ‘But the interior of that first hire boat was bleak. We did our research when
we got home, and it felt like narrowboats in general were stuck in a gloomy varnished plywood time
warp. We knew we could do better.’The idea for Boutique Narrowboats was born.
OUR NARROWBOAT DIARY
We rented Marbled White, the newest boat in the fleet No previous experience is required, although
as we discovered, the boat is 60-feet long and needs close attention when you are steering it!
Day 1:2.S-hour cruising
We arrived at the Union Wharf on the north side of Market Harborough for a 2pm start and were
greeted by Sophie in reception who showed us to our boat. As soon as we peered down the hatch, we
were amazed by the level of finish - stylish furniture, ultra-thin radiators, a TV with all the channels,
Wi-Fi, an ingeniously crafted kitchen space with a Nespresso machine and a wine fridge no less, a
bathroom you’d be pleased to have in your own home and an ultra-snug bedroom with a large king-
size bed, very comfortable. There was lots of storage too, so we could keep it all tidy and ship shape!
We were given comprehensive boat training by Chris. He had much to impart, and we tried
desperately to commit it all to memory, especially the bit about how to work the locks and which
paddle to open first. The rhyme 'Red before white, you’ll be alright. White before red, you’ll be dead,’
especially stuck in our minds.
We then set off rather tentatively along the sinuous Market Harborough arm, getting used to the
steering, passing beautiful homes that come down to the water, and generally greeting and being

bridge first, for which you need a fair bit of strength to open and close. Phew, we made it through
that with our biceps and Achilles tendons still intact, which built our confidence a bit.
We moored up for the night shortly afterwards and made our way into the quaint Foxton village
to The Black Horse pub, which has a lovely garden and view northeast towards the Langtons. Dinner
was spent regaling our adventures of the day, feeling we were starting to be in control.
Day 2:6 hours cruising
Next morning we woke up early, determined to be first in the queue to go up Foxton Locks, which
comprises two five-chamber staircases and is one of the wonders of the canal network. We needn’t
have worried. Clare quickly found a volunteer lockkeeper, who was able to take us up the whole way,
and soon we got started. An hour later we had made it to the top, and our reward was a great view
and, perhaps more importantly, a big sense of achievement and a sausage bap, washed down with a
huge mug of coffee.
We'd really like to put in a plug here for the Canal & River Trust, who manage this site and
the whole network. They look after it beautifully, help novices like us manoeuvre through
the locks and have many activities for youngsters too. To make a donation and receive their
newsletter, visit canalrivertrust.org.uk - if you enjoy walking or boating along canals, it’s a great
enterprise to support.
From Foxton Locks on. we were much more confident of our boat control and were able to fully
relax. The countryside throughout our trip was gorgeous, but this next stage alongside the Laughton
Hills especially so, with cows, horses and sheep in the fields, and myriad birds including swans and
herons, plus butterflies and dragonflies around the water. And the canal side is full of wild flowers.
Many boats choose to moor up here and just enjoy the beauty and tranquillity of nature for a few
hours. There is a footpath from Bridge 51 (every bridge is helpfully numbered) that takes you up the
hill to Laughton and back, a really fabulous couple of hours’ walk.
We wanted to reach Welford in good time, so we chugged on and soon made it to the Husbands
Bosworth tunnel, 1,166 yards long and quite spooky, although not especially difficult to steer through.
In theory, another boat can get by in the other direction, but we were glad we didn’t have to put that
theory to test.
We turned left into the Welford arm and headed up this delightful stretch of countryside to
the Welford Marina. Rather incredibly, the young River Avon is flowing in the opposite direction
alongside us, eventually heading west through Stratford-upon-Avon to the Severn.
Welford Marina is a very friendly community with an absolutely brilliant pub, The Wharf Inn - lots
of real ales, a really happy atmosphere and good pub grub. We had a hearty dinner, plenty to drink
and then returned in good spirits to the boat that we had moored alongside a glade of oak trees.

A canal boat holiday with Boutique Narrowboats
Day 3:7 hours cruising
Waking up early next morning was magical, and we could just see the sun beyond the trees. We started
on our return journey and, incredibly, this time when we went through Foxton Locks again, we had
transformed from novices to experts’ in a day, with interested onlookers asking us to explain how
everything worked. Slightly puffed-up chest time for the skipper. Clare, likewise, was rather chuffed.
We moored awhile in the Market Harborough arm to enjoy an hour or so of peace and quiet,
and then returned our boat to the marina around tea time, giving us a chance to explore Market
Harborough, which is only a 10-minute or so walk away, do a spot of shopping, enjoy a drink at
The Three Swans and then dinner at the ever-reliable Ascoughs Bistro (see our review on pl!6).
Would we recommend this holiday?
You bet. Truly a boutique experience in the boat, excellent service and support, heavenly nature
and tranquillity throughout the trip, a sense of achievement in safely negotiating locks, bridges and
tunnels, and an activity that is completely mind-consuming and therefore very mentally refreshing.
And, really, no prior experience is needed, just a willingness to learn and stay calm.

SUMMARY & A FEW TIPS BASED ON OUR EXPERIENCE
• At a glance: 11 miles, 11 locks. 1 tunnel (each way); relaxed pace; ideal for novices.
• Routes: There are many other itineraries and routes, including some going north to Leicester.
• Tip 1: If you want to take photos at Foxton while busy doing the locks, wed recommend a garment
with a zipped pocket - or perhaps a bumbag. Something to keep your phone safe from falling if you're
leaning to push the locks or winding with vigour!
• Tip 2: Take a snuggly jumper, as it can get chilly on the boat at the start and end of the day and
in cooler weather. We were glad of the jumpers we took. There were blankets on board, which were
welcome too. Boutique Narrowboats provided excellent toiletries, including a toothbrush, shampoo,
soap and plenty of loo roll, and even waterproofs, in case you hadn’t brought your own.
• Tip 3: Wear sturdy shoes to keep your footing sure, especially if jumping on and off the boat to moor up -
and for walking along the gunwales (the narrow ledges along the sides that you can shimmy along to get
from bow to stem). And bring at least one other pair of shoes in case the first ones get very wet or muddy.
Top to bottom: Nick navigating Foxton Locks; the marina at Market Harborough first thing in the morning; Clare opening a
swing bridge (there were two on our route - this one for pedestrians and a much heavier one for vehicular traffic).

DIRECTIONS
1 Start from the church on Belton-in-Rutland, taking the street north and then taking the road to
the right that is marked Lambley Lodge and no through road; this is part ofthe Leighfield Way.
Follow this road all the way until it reaches a cinder track.
2 Head left here, then very shortly right, taking this track northeast that becomes tarmacked
again all the way down to the River Chater, the medieval ponds and Leigh Lodge.
POINTS OF INTEREST
Belton-in-Rutland is a delightful village. The
area was enclosed under the Enclosure Act
of 1794, and many of the wide, straight tracks
we take at the start ofthe walk date back to
then, with hawthorn hedges on either side.
Belton was renamed Belton-in-Rutland in
1982 to distinguish the village from Belton in
Leicestershire, when Rutland (fairly briefly) lost
its county status.
The charming River Chater has its source at
Whatborough Hill just to the west of here
(Grid Ref: 777 063, Alt. 173m) and flows into
the River Welland just west of Tinwell.
Launde ParkWood Nature Reserve is a secret
nature paradise and is one ofthe most ancient
woodlands in Leicestershire. Sadly, it is
currently suffering from ash die back. Beneath
the trees, you’ll see amazing displays of wild
flowers in the spring. Wood anemone, bluebell,
wood forget-me-not, sweet woodruff, early
purple orchid and primrose are just a few ofthe
more notable species, while rarer ones include
bird's-nest and greater butterfly-orchids, nettle-
leaved bellflower, herb Paris and toothwort.
There are lots of butterflies too.
ЗТаке the path round the back of Leigh Lodge, then take the path that goes along another
cinder track, maintaining a steady height. The path becomes a wide grassy track.
4 On reaching a metalled track going north/south, take a right, then immediately left, heading
west. The track becomes a more conventional country path at this stage and winds down
across a tributary ofthe Chater and then across the Chater itself.
5 The official path goes up the slope of this next field, but we took the left-hand field boundary,
as there was a crop growing; it is a very well-defined path. Head to the northwest end of
Launde ParkWood.
6 Turn left (south) at the end of the wood and walk up the slop about too metres to find a
pedestrian entry to the wood.
7 Follow the track southeast in the wood until you reach a right turning, marked by Bird Box
No. 7 on the tree ahead. Turn right here and follow the track until you reach a much more
pronounced track.
8 Bear half right at this point and then follow the metalled track to the main entrance
to the wood.
9 Turn left along the track, and follow the bridleway up the hill, passing the 191 trig point tucked
into the hedge, clearly now redundant in the age of sat nav.
W Shortly after the trig point, you take a sharp right down the hill (glorious views), and you
head back past Brickie Farm onto a tarmacked road that takes you back to Belton-in-
Rutland and the start ofthe walk.

Local history
Ask Leo
Pumpkins
Jean Orpin and Sue Lee have been finding out more about pumpkins,
which now play such an important part in Hallowe’en celebrations
smaller varieties may produce up to ten.
They develop their bright colours in late
summer and ripen from September, then
they are left for a couple more weeks to
mature and develop a hard skin. To keep
pumpkins once harvested, they need to
be stored without touching each other in a
frost-free environment. They will then keep
through the winter.
Pumpkins are fun to grow at home if
you have room, but these days pumpkins
are mainly grown on a large scale for
supermarkets, garden centres and ‘pick
your own’. There are numerous farmers
growing pumpkins in our area, including
David Bowman Pumpkins near Spalding -
the largest producer in Europe.
PUMPKINS are one of the oldest plants in
the world. Archaeologists discovered seeds
in Mexico dating back 7,000 years, and
they have always been a staple food for native
Americans. There are many different stories of how
they came to Europe. Columbus could have brought
them back in the 15th century. The Portuguese then
spread pumpkins around the world, by taking the
seed to Africa, China and Japan.
Pumpkins were probably brought to England
by the French in the 16th century. The French
called them ‘pumpions’. In 1620 the Pilgrim
Fathers sailed to America from England, learning
more about pumpkins from Native Americans.
They became an important food for the settlers,
probably helping them through the first winter.
Pilgrim Rhyme, 1630
For pottage and puddings and custards and pies,
Our pumpkins and parsnips are common supplies:
We have pumpkins at morning and pumpkins
at noon,
If it were not for pumpkins, we would be undoon.
Rhymes ft stories
One of the oldest and best-known rhymes is Peter,
Peter, Pumpkin Eater from 1797. Like many old
rhymes, it has a dark side. Did he murder his wife
and put her in a pumpkin shell or did he constrain
her with a chastity belt called a pumpkin?
Peter, Peter, pumpkin eater,
Had a wife but couldn 4 keep her;
He put her in a pumpkin shell
And there he kept her very well.
Today there are many counting rhymes about
pumpkins to entertain children at Hallowe’en
Cinderella’s Fairy Godmother changed a pumpkin
into a coach. Cinderella is a very old story written
by Charles Perrault in the 17th century, but the most
well-known version today is Walt Disney’s.
Cultivating pumpkins
Pumpkins require a sunny situation, regular water
and plenty of space. They grow on the surface
of the soil on vines at least 2m long - they can
grow to 10m. Some ‘bush’ varieties are available,
taking up less space.
The seeds need warm soil to germinate and are
sown indoors in late spring or outdoors a little
later. After germination, they grow quickly, with
male flowers appearing after about eight weeks,
followed by a few female ones, which develop
into fruit after pollination. Each plant will normally
produce three to five pumpkins, although some
Hallowe’en
The ancient Celtic festival of Samhain was
marked by placing candles inside carved
turnips to deter evil spirits. In the early
19th century this custom was introduced
to the United States by Scottish and Irish
immigrants, using pumpkins instead of
turnips. Now millions are carved each year,
and the custom has spread around the world.
Pumpkin carving tips
• Choose a pumpkin with a large, smooth
face area.
• Invest in a set of pumpkin-carving tools.
• Angle the cut to remove the top (to stop it
falling in later).
• Use an ice cream scoop to remove seeds.
• Remove some pumpkin flesh from the
area you are going to carve.
• Use a stencil to mark your design (readily
available online).
• Rub the cuts with Vaseline to make the
pumpkin last longer.
• Use timed LED lights not burning candles.
There are many local ‘pick-your-own’
pumpkin farms and Pumpkin Festivals who
advertise in good time for Hallowe’en.
126
Pumpkin varieties
What colour are pumpkins? Orange? Right, of course, but that isn’t all - as well as all
shades of orange, they can be yellow, white, green, and even blue and black. Blue
pumpkins (really silver-blue) from America are now grown worldwide, although they are
still quite rare. True black pumpkins are only grown in Miyazaki Prefecture in japan.
Pumpkins also come in all shapes and sizes. Competition enthusiasts choose Giant
Atlantic, which produces pumpkins up to 300kg. This would, however, be small for
those seeking to break records. The current UK record, set in October 2022, is 1,205kg,
achieved by twins Ian and Stuart Paton of Lymington. Varieties grown for‘pick your own’
often have ‘gold’ in their name. They are deep orange, mature early and have shallow
ridges ideal for carving and decorating. Gold Medal is a large, round variety of 12-iskg
or more, and at the other end of the scale is Gold Speck a mini-pumpkin only io-i2cm in
diameter. Even smaller is Wee-B-Little, not much larger than a cricket ball.
Today there are several hundred varieties of pumpkins, adapted to local conditions
all over the world. Names may derive from their colour like Sunshine or Green Striped
or their taste like Small Sugar Pie. Many variety names refer to pumpkin traditions such
as jack O’Lantem, Little Lantern, Goosebump (a warty pumpkin). Gremlin, Wizard and
Trick or Treat. It is striking how many have animal names, for example Big Moose, Polar
Bear, Baby Bear, Speckled Hound, and Wolf.
Pumpkin recipes
We associate pumpkins with America, but they are part of a world cuisine. All the pumpkin is edible
- the seeds, the leaves and even the flowers. Pumpkins are versatile and can be cooked in many
ways. In the Middle East they are used mainly
in sweet dishes, in Italy in ravioli and risottos,
in China the leaves are served as a green
vegetable, and in India they are an ingredient
of curries. The flowers can be candied or used
as a decoration. Pumpkins can also be roasted
or made into soup.
Very few recipe books in the UK had
pumpkin recipes until the 1990s, but they
have been found in old recipe books.
One of the earliest recipes for ‘pumpion’
(pumpkin) pie appeared in a 17th-century
English cookbook written by Hannah Woolley.
Mrs Beeton also had a recipe in her 1861
book. Nowadays, there are numerous recipes
available, with many ideas for cooking pumpkins, not only pumpkin pie but also for scones,
biscuits, spiced latte, cheesecake, muffins, pancakes and more.
PUMPKIN PIE - THEN AND NOW
Hannah Woolley, 1670: Take a Pumpion, pare
it, cut it in thin slices, dip in beaten Eggs and
Herbs shred small, and fry it till it be enough,
then lay it into Pie with Butter, Raisins,
Currans, Sugar and Sack, and in the bottom
some sharp Apples; when it is baked, butter
it and serve it.
Mrs Beeton, 1861: To every quart of pumpkin,
strained, allow 6 eggs, ’/* of a lb. of butter,
*/i a pint of sweet milk, yi a lb. of white
sugar, 1 tsp of French brandy, 1 gill of Madeira
or sherry paste.
Modem Recipe: 450g pumpkin flesh or 425g
tin, 2 eggs plus 1 yolk, 1 tsp molasses, 75g soft
dark brown sugar, itsp cinnamon, ’/2 tsp
each nutmeg, ground allspice, ground cloves,
ground ginger and 275ml double cream.
Decorative pumpkins
jack O’Lantems carved to be as scary as
possible are still the most popular decorations,
but there are alternatives. If you’d prefer your
pumpkin to be decorative rather than scary,
fit a pot plant firmly in the top or put a glass
jar inside and fill it with leaves and flowers.
Pumpkins can be painted and decorated with
acrylic paint or you can stick things - eyes,
teeth, decorative leaves - onto the pumpkin
ratherthan cutting it.
A pumpkin that has been carved or cut and
deseeded will not last very long. Uncarved,
pumpkins keep much longer (so long as
they’re protected from frost) and they can still
be used to cook with later.
Use a marker to draw a face, then you can
add a hat or you could place it on an empty
flowerpot with branches of leaves behind as
hair. Different-coloured pumpkins stacked up
look attractive, as do a few arranged with a pot
plant on your doorstep, or they could be lined
up surrounded by autumn leaves or streamers.

The Osprey Leadership Foundation
In 2018 Dr Tim Mackrill founded the Osprey Leadership Foundation (OLF) to inspire a new generation
of young conservation leaders. Amander Meade spoke to Programme Manager, Becky Park, to find out
more about this influential project
How did the Osprey Leadership Foundation come about?
Dr Mackrill established the Foundation in response to the positive impact of
leadership training he received early in his career. This had a huge impact
on helping him to become an engaging and effective leader, and he wanted
to pay that experience forward to other young conservationists.
What’s the ethos behind the project?
We work to inspire and enable young conservation leaders along the
osprey’s migratory flyway to deliver sustainable environmental change to
the world around them. The OLF mission is to ensure they have the skills
and self belief to make a difference from a grass-roots level and to help
prepare them for the challenges they will face throughout their career.
We believe that anyone can be a leader with the potential to engage
and influence people in a positive way. Our focus is on every individual’s
ability to inspire and influence others to create positive change or a desired
outcome, which in this instance is sustainable environmental change.
Sustainable environmental change is a permanent change that halts
climate change and ecological destruction in a way that supports the
present population without impeding future generations. Science has
presented us with the evidence that humanity is amid a climate and
ecological crisis, and therefore authentic, effective and brave leadership
in conservation has never been more important.
Who is eligible to take part?
Our core target audience is those aged 18 to 35 living locally to the
osprey’s flyway between the UK and West Africa. However, we welcome
participants from anywhere in the world. We currently work with school-
aged children in The Gambia but would like to expand our work with this
age group in the future.
We also work independently and with partners, such as the
Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust, to provide activities for local
young people ranging from primary age through to those in entry-level
positions, which aim to equip them with the skills they need to become
authentic, effective and brave leaders in the conservation community
and beyond. The OLF supports local Osprey Leaders (formerly Osprey
Ambassadors) to meet and share their passion for ospreys and other
wildlife. These young people are demonstrating their admirable leadership
skills by standing up for wildlife through fundraising, raising awareness
with their peers in school and in their local communities.
What kind of activities take place?
We deliver Osprey Clubs in The Gambia through a local guide who works
closely with schools. We hope to develop this work with school-aged
children in other places along the flyway, and the Osprey Leaders group is
a great addition to this area of our work. It’s important to emphasise that
in The Gambia children do not have the same opportunities to engage in
environmental education as they do in the UK, which is why we currently
have these clubs in West Africa but not here where we are based yet. We
see opportunities to connect with nature as a child as a precursor to our
work with young adults - without being inspired and engaged as a child,
we won’t have passionate young people choosing a career in conservation.
We also offer our ‘Becoming A Conservation Leader* training programme,
which is delivered online three or four times a year and is open to anyone
studying, volunteering or working in conservation aged 18 to 35. Details of
how to take part are on www.environmentjob.co.uk and on the OLF social
media platforms. The course introduces participants to the skills required
to make an authentic and brave leader. After the leadership training,
participants are offered the opportunity to join our Evolving Conservation
Leaders network to further develop their skills.
There are lots of ways you can support the Osprey Leadership Foundation.
You can donate through the Friends of OLF Scheme, donate as you shop,
or help raise awareness of the scheme as they develop the conservation
leaders of the future. You can also find out more at www.ospreylf.org
