TRIUMPH CONFIRMS SPEED 400 AND
SCRAMBLER 400X PRICING
W
e’ve been waiting with bated breath for
Triumph Motorcycles NZ to lock in pricing
for its brand-new entry-level models - the
Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 X - and the wait is
finally over.
Entering the New Zealand market in January
2024, the new Triumph 400cc range will be
priced from as little as $7995 for the Speed 400
while the Scrambler 400 X will debut at $8995.
Those prices exclude on-road costs, but even
then, the new Triumph 400s are entering the
New Zealand market at a far lower price point
than we initially expected with our crystal ball
gazing putting them closer to the $10,000 mark.
With pricing under $9000, the new Triumphs
are sure to be very competitive with their main
rivals from KTM and Royal Enfield.
While the new 400s from Triumph were
designed from the ground up to be Triumph’s
most affordable models, that doesn’t mean
they are lacking in modern technology and
14 KIWI RIDER
performance despite their size.
At their centre is Triumph’s all-new TR-series
engine which measures in at 398cc and puts
down a healthy 40hp and 37.5Nm of peak
torque. That’s much higher than the bikes
Triumph will be immediately competing
against in the learner-approved modern classic
segment (i.e. Royal Enfield’s 350 and 411 lineups)
thanks to a thoroughly modern design that
includes a four-valve head with dual overhead
cams and water cooling.
The engine transfers its power to the rear
wheel via a six-speed gearbox and chain drive.
The clutch is of the torque-assist variety,
meaning that while it has a light action at the
lever it is very learner-friendly and won’t lock up
the rear wheel on fast downshifts.
Also helping keep the new 400s on the
sprightly side of the LAMS class is a low weight,
with the Speed 400 tipping the scales at just
170kg wet while the Scrambler 400 weighs in at
9 kg heavier.
Suspension for both comes in the form of
43mm big-piston USD forks with a monoshock
rear with an external reservoir (the Scrambler
gets longer travel versions) while braking comes
in the form of a 300mm disc with a four-piston
caliper on the Speed 400 and a 320mm disc
and four-piston caliper on the Scrambler. Both
have ABS braking and traction control. The ABS
on the Scrambler is also switchable for riding
off-road, which is a nice touch by Triumph.
Both bikes also ship with a switchable traction
control system with a simple on or off selection.
That means riders can be assured of maximum
safety or maximum fun with the new bikes.
Instrumentation is a stylish analogue speed
with an integrated LCD screen with all the
expected features including a gear position
indicator, fuel gauge, and a digital tachometer.
Triumph has also included a USB-C charging
socket that allows for on-the-move charging
of handlebar-mounted devices, such as
smartphones and navigation systems.
Triumph initially launched the Speed 400 and
Scrambler 400 X into the Indian market, where
they have received rave reviews across the
board for their build quality and high spec.
With Triumph’s previous LAMS offerings still
well into the teens price-wise, the sub-$9000
Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 X are sure to be
a hit with Kiwi buyers who want to enter the
world of Triumph Motorcycles.

HONDA DEBUTS E-CLUTCH FOR MOTORCYCLES
H
onda seems to be looking at its next
challenge in its quest to make motorcycling
more accessible, with the firm announcing on
its website information on the Honda E-Clutch
for motorcycles.
Set to be the world’s first automatic clutch
control system for a multi-gear motorcycle
transmission, Honda’s E-Clutch aims to enable
smooth starting, shifting gears and stopping
without the need for the rider to operate the
clutch lever. It sounds like great stuff for those
coming to grips with motorcycles, as well as
having plenty of other potential applications.
The system uses electronic control technology
to provide instantaneous, fine-tuned clutch
control for optimum performance in situations
where the driving force changes, such as
starting, shifting gears, and stopping, to achieve
smooth starting, shifting gears and stopping
more naturally than a rider’s manual clutch
operation.
To meet a wide range of rider demands, the
clutch can be operated like a normal manual
motorcycle gripping the clutch lever, even
when the clutch is controlled electronically. This
allows the system to be used by more riders
of diverse riding experience and skills, who
can concentrate on the fun of riding in more
comfort.
As the lightweight and compact system can
be installed without major changes to existing
engine layouts, Honda plans to apply Honda
E-Clutch to its FUN motorcycle models over
time.
At the time of writing, Honda is yet to
announce where in its range it might deploy the
E-Clutch, but with EICMA just around the corner,
we imagine we’ll find out soon enough.

TRIUMPH ANNOUNCES THRUXTON FINAL EDITION
T
riumph Motorcycles has been a flag bearer
of the cafe racer class for decades, but
with the changing tastes of motorcyclists,
it seems the end of an era is nigh with the
announcement that 2024 will be the last year
for the iconic Thruxton.
“The Thruxton has a special place in the
hearts of many motorcyclists, and we are all
immensely proud of this Final Edition, which
captures the essence of the British café racer
scene”, Triumph Motorcycles’ Chief Commercial
Officer Paul Stroud said. “The Thruxton will bow
out of production at the very pinnacle of its
development with a special edition that secures
its place in the history books of Triumph
Motorcycles.”
Undoubtedly set to become a desirable
collectors’ item, as you’d expect for a special
edition motorcycle, each Thruxton Final Edition
will come with a certificate of authenticity
featuring the bike’s unique VIN number. This
18 KIWI RIDER
is in turn signed by members of the Thruxton
1200 design team and Triumph’s CEO, Nick
Bloor. The bike is also set apart from the regular
Thruxton RS by its unique Final Edition engine
badge which will also be supplied with each
motorcycle, with a gold-finished surround and
‘Final Edition’ graphic infill, this beautiful badge
is sure to make a great display piece.
The bikes themselves will be based on the
Thruxton RS and will be offered in an exquisite
Competition Green paint scheme, with handpainted gold lining and signed by the artist. It’s
fair to say the Thruxton Final Edition blends
the style and traditional elegance of the RS,
while also paying homage to the Thruxton’s rich
racing heritage.
If you want to get your hands on the next
piece of Triumph history, get in touch with
your local Triumph dealer as numbers of the
Thruxton Final Edition will be limited when they
arrive in Kiwi dealerships in late March 2024.

2024 AFRICA TWIN
UPDATES
H
onda’s flagship adventure machine has
received revisions for the 2024 model year,
with the touring-focused Adventure Sports
variant receiving the lion’s share of changes.
Engine-wise, both versions of the 2024 Africa
Twin gain a boost in performance as Honda
tweaks the 1084cc parallel-twin engine.
2024 sees the Africa Twin benefit from
significant performance increases in both power
and torque in the low and middle rev ranges.
Peak power remains at 100hp, but Honda has
managed to squeeze out a 7% increase in
maximum torque, now 112Nm, which is delivered
earlier at 5500rpm rather than 6250rpm.
Physical tweaks to the engine include a bump
in compression ratio which goes from 10.1:1 to
10.5:1, which alongside changes to the valve
timing, intake ports, updated exhaust system all
matched to new ECU settings which allow the
engine to draw more performance from each
stroke.
For the 2024 Africa Twin, Showa’s Electronically
Equipped Ride Adjustment is now an option
for the CRF1100L. Previously only available on
the Adventure Sports variant, the Showa EERA
system offers optimised damping in all riding
conditions, as well as the ability to change
rear spring preload on the move via the 6.5-in
touchscreen display. With five modes - SOFT,
MID, HARD, OFF-ROAD and USER, the system’s
flexibility means that damping adjustment can
be programmed to suit the rider’s preference at
the touch of a button.
Visually the 2024 CRF1100L Africa Twin is
differentiated from its predecessors with a
new, aggressively-designed front fairing with a
larger five-way adjustable screen which offers
maximum forward visibility or increased wind
protection depending on how the rider has it
positioned.
The Adventure Sports evolves further into
its role as Honda’s premier adventure touring
machine, with the 2024 model dropping its 21inch front wheel in favour of a 19-incher.
Honda has also altered the suspension stroke
from the now standard fitment (Adventure
Sports only) Showa EERA, which has been
reduced by 20mm. Alongside the fitment
of a wider front tyre on the new 19-inch
wheel, Honda says these combine to give
the rider more front-end grip and feedback,
especially when fully loaded or two up,
without dramatically compromising off-road
performance. This change to the front end also
lowers the centre of gravity of the CRF1100L
Africa Twin Adventure Sports, contributing
to improved low-speed manoeuvrability and
ground reach.
Like the base Africa Twin, the Africa Twin
Adventure Sports has had its front fairing
aggressively redesigned to improve upper body
wind deflection and aerodynamics. Like its
sibling, it features a five-level height adjustable
screen. Because of its more long-range focus,
Honda has also given the Adventure Sports a
new seat and uses a +15mm thicker urethane
foam cushion with optimised density to reduce
long-distance riding fatigue.
Blue Wing Honda, the New Zealand distributor
for Honda Motorcycles, is yet to confirm when
the new Africa Twins will arrive in New Zealand
and whether the updated machines will come at
a price premium.

KAWASAKI’S NINJA 7 HYBRID BREAKS COVER
W
e’ve known for a while that Kawasaki was
leading the charge in terms of hybrid
motorcycle tech, and now finally we have our
first look at what the future really looks like.
The newly unveiled Ninja 7 Hybrid is set to be
the world’s first production hybrid motorcycle
and blends an electric motor with Kawasaki’s
451cc parallel twin.
Outwardly, the Ninja 7 Hybrid looks like a
conventional motorcycle, but beneath the
surface of its clear Ninja family styling is all the
tech needed for the “Strong Hybrid System” as
Kawasaki puts it.
The hybrid system places the traction motor
(AKA electric motor) behind the engine with a
13kg 27.2AH battery providing power.
This means that that bike has enough juice
to run off the battery alone, but with both
the ICE engine and electric motor running
simultaneously complement each other to
22 KIWI RIDER
produce a rider-friendly character with strong
low-mid torque.
There’s also a function called E-Boost with
which riders can access increased power for
approximately 15 seconds. When activated,
acceleration is stronger and top speed is
increased.
The electric motor also allows the bike to
utilise a reverse function on top of the sixspeed transmission for the internal combustion
engine. With the bike weighing in at 227kg, this
should prove very useful for those riders with
a knack for squeezing into impossible parking
spaces.
We’ll have to wait for Team Green to confirm
power figures, but initial indications are quite
promising.
The bike can run solely in EV mode for an as
yet undisclosed short distance, which sees the
bike put out no emissions when being operated
as such. Kawasaki says this low-speed shortdistance mode may also be helpful for certain
situations where quiet riding is appropriate,
such as in residential areas or in parking
garages.
As part of the bike’s fuel conservation focus, in
ECO-HYBRID mode when the bike comes to a
complete stop, the engine turns off to conserve
fuel.
The rest of the Ninja 7 Hybrid is pretty
conventional for the class. Instrumentation
comes in the form of a 4.3-in TFT with
integrated Bluetooth functionality and rider
modes. When it comes to the suspension and
brakes, a 41mm fork and monoshock handle
damping duties while a pair of 300mm discs
and twin-piston calipers pull on the 17-inch
front wheel and a 250mm disc and singlepiston handle the rear.
Currently, we have yet to receive word on
whether Kawasaki will introduce the Ninja 7
Hybrid to the New Zealand market.
2024 HUSQVARNA
NORDEN 901 UPDATES
T
wo years after its introduction, Husqvarna has
announced updates to the Norden 901 for
2024, with the bike gaining even more electronic
features to help riders explore, along with some
distinctive new graphics to further set the bike
apart from the ADV crowd.
For 2024, the Norden 901 retains the same
proven, LC8c 889cc parallel twin engine and
WP APEX suspension, but now the bike meets
Euro5+ emissions standards thanks to a new
exhaust system. It also offers more features
through refinements Husqvarna has made to
the already appealing Norden recipe.
The lean-angle sensitive Cornering Motorcycle
Traction Control (MTC) now offers ten different
levels of rear wheel slip, which can be selected
when the optional Explorer Mode is engaged.
Rounding out the new features found on the
Norden 901 2024 are a new USB port on the dash
and Hazard Warning lights which can be quickly
switched on in the event of an emergency.
The 2024 Norden 901 is expected to arrive
in New Zealand Husqvarna dealerships from
February 2024.

SUZUKI V-STROM 800RE
S
uzuki’s V-Strom 800 takes a more roadfocused lane with the new 800RE. The Road
Explorer version of the V-Strom (as the RE in
its name stands for) takes the DL800 platform
back to the V-Strom’s roots with a more roadoriented take on adventure touring compared
to the DL800DE.
For the 800RE, Suzuki once again adopts
wheel sizing of 19 and 17 inches with new sevenspoke cast alloy rims taking the place of the
laced units of the DE.
As with the 800DE, the V-Strom 800RE is
built around Suzuki’s new 776cc DOHC parallel
twin engine and housed within a steel frame.
However, on the RE Suzuki has also swapped
24 KIWI RIDER
out the suspension which is now tuned to
maximise straight-line stability and on-road
cornering performance.
According to Suzuki, every aspect of the
V-Strom 800RE is designed to appeal to
riders who desire a powerful, usable, flexible
middleweight adventure bike with a suite
of electronics crafted to enhance the riding
experience.
While the rest of the chassis remains the same
as the DE model, Suzuki has made plenty of
changes to the DL800RE to emphasise its road
explorer pedigree.
The windscreen is now larger and wider than
that of the 800DE model in favour of reducing
rider fatigue on long rides.
Seat height drops to 825mm as part of the
switch to shorter stroke more road-focused
suspension, while the handlebars are narrower
for a better on-road riding position.
The first examples are expected to arrive in New
Zealand Suzuki dealers early in 2024 with pricing
currently set at $17,999 plus on roads.

Boasting a spec-sheet to rival the best adventure

budget conscious end of the market, CFMoto’s 800MT
Explore has put the cat among the pigeons.
WORDS: Jock McLauchlan PHOTOS: Geoff Osborne
A
t first glance, the 2023 CFMoto 800MT
Explore looks like it has the goods to
make a real impact on the sub-1000cc
Adventure market. It has a very impressive
specification list and cool technology that could
shame some bikes twice its price. But... and this
is the ‘but’ everyone is getting hung up on... it’s
a Chinese built bike. So, let’s dive in to see if you
can have your cake and eat it too.
crash bars and a huge 7-inch TFT screen, not
to mention fully adjustable KYB suspension at
both ends. Bloody hell, this is the complete wish
list... and it all comes fitted as standard.
And then there’s the price... just $17,790 plus
On Roads, which undercuts everything in the
adventure class with that spec by a country
mile. So, what is the purchaser getting, or
missing out on? Time to find out.
CHINESE BUILT, HIGH SPEC
CFMoto is a Chinese motorcycle company
which has a manufacturing partnership with
KTM (among others). Part of this partnership
is producing the KTM LC8c 790 engine. It’s this
engine the 800MT uses as its heart, and that’s a
motor we like a lot in both of KTM’s Adventure
and Duke versions.
The 800MT comes with a lip-smacking farkle
list. There’s Bosch ABS and fuel injection, radarbased adaptive cruise control, quick-shifting,
tyre-pressure monitoring, heated seats, heated
grips, slipper clutch, fog lights, steering damper,
centre-stand, hand guards, large adjustable
screen, wire spoke wheels, alloy bash plate and
BLIND SPOT TECH
I picked the bike up in Howick, an area I’m not
familiar with, and dived straight in to busy
rush hour traffic. Time being of the essence
to get out of there, I jumped into a spot of
lane splitting and with that all manner of
beeping started up. I got a bit of a fright and
was looking all around expecting to see some
flash European car telling its driver to stop
being a dickhead. My hearing has always been
significantly under-par, but I started to realise it
was the 800MT making all the noise and it was
not entirely happy with what I was doing. The
bike was basically giving me a ‘heads up’ that I
was between lanes and cars were close by.

With this new found knowledge in hand, I
relaxed and started to use it to my advantage.
As well as the beep, there is a graphic on the
exceptionally bloody huge TFT screen (very
cool) that expands from the outside towards
the centre to indicate how close the vehicle is
beside you. The more the graphic expands, the
closer the vehicle.
Okay, some of you cynical old boys are
probably thinking, why not just turn your head a
bit and open your eyes? Fair enough, but it was
certainly helpful when a car came up behind me
in the blind spot – I didn’t need to look back to
know it was there. The bike told me it was there
and the graphic showed how close. It’s a clearly
worthwhile safety feature.
Being the end of winter, it was a little chilly. So, I
dialled up the (fitted as standard) heated grips
and seat before flowing on to the motorway.
Lately I’ve become quite partial to heated seats.
KIWI RIDER 31
It’s not like you can’t survive without one in a
temperate country like New Zealand, but it is
very pleasant. To my mind heated grips are a
must for winter touring, although, some say, I
have a reasonably high princess factor. However,
frozen, non-working hands are not particularly
nice or safe to ride with (same with your bum...?
Ed).
PREDICTABLE POWER
Once cruising on the motorway, the engine
proved smooth and effective. It has a very linear
power delivery that progressively snowballs in
power as revs rise. Arguably, it is not the most
exciting delivery, but it is certainly quite rapid.
The spec sheet says top speed is 195km/h,
which is surely plenty fast enough on gravel
and well past instant walking speed…err, thanks
Constable.
The power delivery is very easy and predictable
in use. Exactly what most riders need generally,
but especially in tricky, slippery conditions.
Peak power is a claimed 90hp, produced at
32 KIWI RIDER
9250rpm and a maximum 75Nm of torque hits
at 8000rpm.
The motor itself is 799cc, liquid cooled with
dual overhead camshafts to drive the eight
valves and has six gears. On gravel, the smooth
engine power is great and with the TC set to
off-road mode a little sliding was possible, but
the TC couldn’t be turned completely off...
from what I could figure out anyway. This is not
ideal when fully off-road, but acceptable in dry
conditions.
EVERYDAY ADVENTURE
With a 17-inch rear, 19-inch front wheel
combination the 800 is not designed to be a
hardcore adventure machine – simply because
they don’t work as well as 18-inch/21-inch
wheels with knobblies off-road. However, the
smaller wheel combo makes for better everyday
riding, and they still coped well with some
whoopy sandy trails and the suspension action
was pretty good too.
Out of the box the KYB suspension is great.
KIWI RIDER 35
On road and on gravel the action is excellent
- compliant and competent and nicely
controlled. On a whoopy sand trail the shock
was well controlled and behaved. It has good
bottoming resistance and is very comfortable
riding. The front forks are USD with 43mm
stanchions and have 160mm of axle travel (the
single rear shock provides 150mm of wheel
travel). They’re are a little on the soft side,
but as mentioned above, the suspension had
box standard settings and is fully adjustable.
So, fettle with the compression and rebound
damping until your heart is content (once
you’ve set your sag).
The seat height is a reasonable 825mm. For
an adventure bike this is actually quite low and
it is amazing how much a lower seat height
improves ease of use. After a recent diet of
some very tall adventure machines this is a very
pleasant change. As a tall rider it is not such a
big deal for me, but with many riders sub six
feet tall and most with grey hair, I don’t believe
36 KIWI RIDER
38 KIWI RIDER
manufacturers are doing themselves any
favours by effectively excluding shorter
riders from what are great machines. So,
another plus for the 800MT.
BRAKING
You might not have heard of J.Juan, which
makes the brakes fitted to the 800MT.
J.Juan is a Spanish company specialising
in brakes, and is wholly owned by Brembo.
I was happy with the brakes and braking
performance. In line with expected use
the front brakes are not spectacularly
strong, but are progressive, allowing
smooth stopping with great feel on all
surfaces, happily hauling the 231kg (wet

weight) 800 to a prompt and predictable
stop. The ABS did its job well too. Twin
Rotor 320mm discs with J.Juan four-piston
radially mounted calipers do the business
up front while there is a single 260mm
disc with a J.Juan twin piston caliper at the
rear. Overall, the stopping is great both
front and rear for mixed terrain riding.
THE BOTTOM LINE
It is fair to say the CFMOTO 800 MT
touring is highly impressive, exceptionally
so, at its price point. The high
specification, safety technology and
equipment levels surpass many much
higher priced machines. But, putting all
that aside, it is still a great ride. It is very
comfortable, the screen keeps the chill
off and the heated hand grips and seat
enhance comfort levels. Add in effortless
handling with accurate steering and wellcontrolled compliant suspension action,
along with a smooth, no fuss, brisk engine
and the bases are well and truly covered.
I can’t tell you how reliable it will be, but
early indications from owners seem good.
CFMoto has done itself proud, this
800MT is a very well executed machine
and will rightly have top-end brands
looking over their shoulders. Buyers are
going to love that sub $16k price point
too.

Lew Reynolds is a former teacher and property
developer from Nelson. He tells us how Easy
Rider got him into bikes, and why he loves
BMWs and long distance riding.
WHY I RIDE...
H
ow did you get into motorcycling?
“It sounds ridiculous, but at an
impressionable age in 1969 I saw a
picture for Easy Rider in a magazine. I watched
the film too many times and then went out and
bought a 1964 150cc Vespa, followed by a 1968
180cc one a year later. After a couple of years
I went further up the food chain with a 350cc
Suzuki, then a 650 Triumph, and it just went
from there.”
What kind of riding do you like?
“I prefer riding long distances than just going
around town. I’ve ridden the length of the
North Island many times, although I’ve stopped
trying to set records like I used to. I’m seventy

years old now and I’ve slowed down a bit these
days. My younger brother died ten years ago
and that made me realise that perhaps I wasn’t
immortal.”
What do you love about riding?
“I just like riding, especially for long distances
without stopping. The people are great too.
I was one of the very early members of the
Victoria University of Wellington Motorcycle
Club, and fifty years later I’m still riding with
people I met there. We’re scattered around the
country now, but we get together every now
and then and go to events like the Brass Monkey
or BMW Rough As Guts (RAG) rallies. It’s always
good fun to get together with people I’ve
known for a long time who are all into bikes.
My partner Wendy bought herself a Harley a
few years ago and it was nice to do some long
distance rides together. She’s sold it now, but
comes out in the sidecar.”
What’s your current ride?
“I’ve got five BMWs. Well, four and a half,
because one is half shared with my partner’s
What’s your least favourite part of riding?
“A lot of people would probably say riding in
the rain but I actually quite enjoy it. If you’ve got
the right wet weather gear that doesn’t leak,
then it’s fine. I feel like I’m in a little enclosed
bubble. I don’t like riding in the wind at all.
ex-husband. That one is a R65 650cc. I’m not
sure on the year. It’s registered as 1986 but it’s
registered wrong. Then I’ve got an R80 ex-police
bike from 1986, a 1977 R100, 1978 R100 with a
sidecar and a 2001 R1100R.
BMWs are great for riding long distances. In
winter you hardly see any other type of bike
outside of the cities. They really are a rider’s
bike.”
What’s your favourite ride in New Zealand?
“Whangamomona and the Forgotten Highway.
Everyone loves that one, because it’s a really
nice road to ride down. The West Coast is always
nice too - when it’s not raining.”

T
he BMW R18 Transcontinental is an all
new, very flash, fully dressed version of
the R18 cruiser BMW released a couple
of years back. As the name might suggest,
the Transcontinental is designed to cruise vast
open stretches of road in style and comfort the Transcontinental rider venturing forth with
surround sound blasting, cossetted from the
elements by a huge fairing and simply enjoying
the glory of the journey. That’s the imagery.
What’s the reality?
BEATING HEART
I’m going to start here with the engine, because
it’s dominant both from a visual perspective and
the riding experience. Yes, the engine is clearly
BMW’s ubiquitous boxer twin, but that’s where
similarities end. This is the boxer twin on steroids.
It is 1802cc... with two huge 901cc singles
punching out to either side. Peak power is 91hp
at a low 4750rpm, and, as you might expect from
such huge pistons, the torque is huge - peaking
at 158Nm at just 3000 rpm. That’s not quite the
KIWI RIDER 51
whole picture, the R18 lump has a whopping
150Nm of torque available between 2000 and
4000 revs! Yes, it is a torque monster and surfing
that wave is exactly the way to ride it.
Keeping all that torque in check are three
riding modes; Rain, Roll and Rock. Then there
are a plethora of riding aid acronyms – HSC,
MSR, ASC, DCC and optional ACC. That is - Hill
Start Control, dynamic engine brake control,
Automatic Stability Control and Dynamic Cruise
control with the option of Active Cruise Control
that manages speed and following distances.
52 KIWI RIDER
The gearbox has six gears and it has a single
dry clutch plate and there’s a very useful
reverse gear – there are times when reverse will
absolutely make your life easier.
MASSIVE PRESENCE
This version of the R18 has serious presence. It is
a masterpiece of shiny black curves, leather, and
chrome. The build quality looks fabulous. BMW
has blended old world style and sophistication
with modern cutting-edge technology.
Looking at the cockpit, you are surrounded by
a beautiful flight deck. Four chrome-rimmed

analogue dials, with the odometer proudly
displaying ‘Berlin Built’, are blended with a huge
10.25-inch TFT screen, all flanked by the large
sound-system speakers. The Marshall Gold
Series Stage 2 sound system boasts 180W of
power with six speakers.
Adding to the massive presence is the
luggage/storage, there’s enough for you and
the other half for a week away… which is a lot.
And that luggage has central locking. There is
also a wireless phone charging compartment
built in to the top of the fuel tank, discreetly
hidden under more chrome.
All lighting is LED, including the spotlights.
Fuel capacity is a decent 24 litres and, as with
most BMW models, starting is keyless. Fishing
a key out of your pocket while stuffing your
gloves under your armpit just seems like so
much hassle after using keyless.
KIWI RIDER 55
BIG BIKES WITH BIG CHARACTER
The mind wanders to the imagery of effortless
plain sailing, looking grand and luxuriating in
the ride. However, giant full dress bikes can
be a challenging ride; both intimating and
enthralling at the same time. Over the years,
experience has taught me that all big machines
have their quirks and they are not for the faint
hearted. They are heavy, often well north of the
350kg and require real focus and effort during
low-speed manoeuvring. Yep, that reverse
option comes in handy. They are often hard
work going from lock-to-lock on the steering
because of their weight and sometimes raked
out fork angle… the bars flop to full lock after
the mid point. And they are often very long, this
BMW has a not insubstantial 1695mm wheel
base, which can be another challenge in itself.
Moto Guzzi’s MGX21 Flying Fortress had the
steering effort sorted with a special steering
damper to control the flop, but was nice and
free around the straight-ahead position. In fact,
56 KIWI RIDER
it could have been a little firmer in the straightahead position too because that large 21-inch,
filled in, front wheel got steered off course in
strong cross winds. The Honda Valkyrie, while
not a direct competitor with the R18, is perhaps
the best example of a huge motor and heavy
machine that still is an engaging ride. Likewise,
the huge Rocket III big grunter is an impressive
straight-line blaster, but best ridden with a cool
head in the turns…
Weight is the challenge. The Valkyrie is
substantially less of a machine to ride than the
Goldwing. The difference in ease of use not
having full luggage is stark. A full top box alone
can make a bike a very different ride. So, yes,
more so than other machines, the importance
of where you ride huge machines will have a
serious bearing on your enjoyment. These are
not bikes for confined spaces about town and
poorly surfaced, tight backroads. These bikes
love wide open smooth roads, where the motor
can breathe, the rider can relax and the miles

SMOOTH OPERATOR
So, what is Transcontinental like to ride? On
the motorway and open roads, it is a very
smooth operator that requires little rider
input to waft away the miles. It is planted
and solid and relaxing, just as it should. The
engine basically idles along at motorway
speed with plenty of responsive torque on
tap. High revs are not the BMW’s friend and
short-shifting is the best way forwards.
For all low-speed manoeuvring it is
definitely in the “respect the machine
category.” Just the 427kg curb weight alone
should indicate that, but also the luggage
plays havoc with the centre of gravity... And,
it is such a thing of beauty, who would ever
want to risk dropping it?
Stopping the R18 are three 300mm discs,
all with BMW-branded four-piston calipers
with dual channel ABS and linked braking.
They do a decent job. To stop briskly they
require a solid squeeze and the linked
system helps. I found the ergonomics okay,
but not great, mainly because I’m too tall
for it. My knees are quite bent and the gear
and brake pedals seem oddly positioned
for ease of use. A taller seat, which is an
option, would solve these issues. Happily,
normal height and shorter riders will be
very much at home.
The suspension does a great job of
keeping the R18 safely on the road and
the rider nice and comfy. The action is
compliant, progressive and controlled
particularly for such a big machine. There’s
120mm of wheel travel at each end.
MILLION BUCKS
Overall, the BMW R18 Transcontinental
is a fabulous machine. The looks and
build quality are epic. For the rider who
understands and accepts its dynamic
challenges and rides it where and
how it was designed to be ridden, the
Transcontinental is perhaps without rival.
Certainly, you will look a million bucks on it.

I wasn’t expecting to be so pleasantly surprised.
I’ve always liked the strong ethos of Guzzi; solid,
no fuss, good Italiano design, twin 90-degree

‘hunkered’ quality.
That’s the family look and it’s still there, but it’s a

THE FABULOUS BRUSH
There are shades of the Eighties with a sort of

half-fairing style carried through, but it’s all
practical too. There is nothing on this bike that
comes from a previous generation. Everything
is new. The engine is shorter, allowing for a

the pots are spun 90 degrees and the headers
come straight down and out of the cylinder

WINGS AND MORE
The screen is a 7-inch TFT colour screen with
four maps on offer - Road, Rain, Sport, Tour.
In rain mode two wings lift up and out of the
tank in front, and these are purely original
in aerodynamic design, supposedly offering
in Road mode and dialled in anywhere from
body. The opening speed can be determined
35 to 65km/h, and adjustable up until 95. I did
not have a long enough ride to determine their
value in real world weather, but it looks very cool
indeed. In Rain mode they open as as soon as
you dial that setting. But there are many more

innovations aboard the Mandello.
There are three iterations of the marque’s
comes with Kayaba manual adjustable
suspension units front and back and it was a
model; the Mandello and the Mandello S plus
nice, albeit brief ride. The S version comes with
the anniversary model named after the naval
auto Ohlins and the difference is very noticeable,

the electronic whizzery of the traction and IMU

For the money, you simply cannot beat the

windscreen is electronic and is driven up and
down on four arms utilising the same motor as
the aero-wings themselves. It worked well and is
integrated attractively into the whole look.
A NEW LOOK
As a rebrand and a new start for Moto Guzzi I
think the model is a treat, offering 115hp on a
225kg platform, with four-pot Brembos doing
double duty up front and a dual caliper Brembo
at the rear with a single-sided swing arm. In such
a short time and with so many people turning
up to ride the new offering, we were never
going to get a massively in depth read on the
machines, but the buzz amongst participants
was positive and very encouraging. Occasionally
you’ll get some side talk at these launches,
with some more opinionated folk having a
sneer at something, but no such negativity was
experienced at all. Even the established marque
riders with long years of experience were
seemingly much enamoured.
KIWI RIDER 73
One of the new innovations is some sort of
counter rotation to offset the old thrust sideways
that was always present when giving the throttle
a tweak, and I have to say that it has been greatly
reduced, but I‘d have been a bit sadder if they‘d
taken away this old Guzzi quirk completely.
GAME CHANGER
So, is the new model a game changer? Well
certainly for Moto Guzzi I think it is, and I suspect
they have positioned it well price-wise in the
market too. While all the costs of importation
and manufacture have gone up, the end retail
has been kept within the bounds of possibility.
Panniers and boxes are available and they simply
74 KIWI RIDER
click on and off, with no mounts needed.
So, yes, it’s an exciting new start for Guzzi,
and a very fine package from an engineering
perspective, but also from the aesthetics and
innovation standpoint too.
Rip down to your local dealer before too many
days pass, to check it over, because I think they’ll
find homes fast. It is a supremely handsome
bike, that rides very well indeed, in a comfortable
upright position - offering the prospect of long
term riding and ownership.
A very attractive bike, beautifully delivered,
with great engineering and mechanics, and I’m
looking forward to a longer ride when we get our
hands on a test machine.

RALLY-RAID CHAMPIONSHIP GOES TO THE WIRE
T
he World Rally-Raid Championship went
down to the final round in Morocco with
Toby Price battling against Husqvarna’s Luciano
Benevides for the 2023 title.
In addition to the fight for the championship
title, the Moroccan sands proved too much for
many of the big names in the rally, with both
Honda’s Skyler Howes and GasGas’ reigning world
champion Sam Sunderland coming unstuck
during the prologue. Sunderland made the start
of Stage One but continued his horror season
dropping out of the race. Also dropping out
before the final stage were Honda’s Ricky Brabec
who suffered a mechanical failure, and KTM’s
Mattias Walkner who crashed out on Stage Three.
Toby Price entered the rally just 9 points behind
the Argentinian rider, but the Aussie wasn’t in
full health having sustained a throat injury which
dogged him throughout the opening stages of
the rally.
In fact, the 2023 season has been one of mixed
fortunes for Price, but the two-time Dakar
Champion has carried his fight all the way to the
final round. Second at the Dakar Rally, missing
92 KIWI RIDER
out on the win by just 44 seconds to Red Bull
KTM teammate Kevin Benavides, Price then
took the world championship lead with third
place at the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge. A
fourth place at the Sonora Rally saw him extend
that lead before an unfortunate technical issue
at the Desafio Ruta 40 cost him time and his
championship advantage.
Knowing he had to win at the Rallye du Maroc,
Price gave it everything and came out on top
after an impressive performance on the short
157-kilometre stage five of the Rallye du Maroc.
Going third into the stage, the Australian was
able to navigate cleanly through the iconic
Merzouga dunes of the Moroccan Sahara Desert
to bring his KTM 450 RALLY home in sixth place
and take the overall win for the Rally.
“Yeah, It was a really good stage! I had one little
mishap but other than that I’m happy to have
won the round here in Morocco,” Price said. “The
championship is a hard one to swallow, we put
up a good fight and did everything we could but
2023 just hasn’t been the greatest season for us.
I’m happy in the fact that I never gave up and
put in 100 percent right to the finish. I’ll take a
little time now to get some rest but then we’re
soon looking ahead to the Dakar in January. For
sure, it’s going to be another tough one, but I’m
feeling good, the bike is great, and I’ll do my best
as always.”
Taking the overall championship victory by a
meagre four points was Argentinan Husqvarna
rider Luciano Benavides.
The FR 450 Rally mounted rider secured the
title with a hard-fought runner-up result at the
Rallye du Maroc, completing what has been an
exceptional season for the Argentinian.
Opening the fifth and final stage of the
rally today, Benavides delivered another
impressive performance, completing the short,
157-kilometre timed special as second fastest.
The stage result confirmed Benevides as runnerup for the event and in turn, the 28-year-old
secured the world championship crown.
“It’s a dream come true for me! It’s been a long
journey to get to this point from finishing my
first rally here in Morocco in 2017”, Benevides
said. “To finish like this against Toby on the
last day of the rally while opening the stage is
incredible, I can’t thank the team enough for all
the hard work and their belief in me! Today was
crazy! The navigation for this stage was tricky,
I did get lost at some points, but I managed to
get back on track quickly and make up time.
I loved opening the stage on the dunes and
I knew that I had to get ahead as the others
would be catching me up. Finally, I’ve got my first
World Championship!
“Waiting for confirmation of the championship
when I finished was tense, 40 minutes felt like
four hours, but I knew I gave my best today as
there was no other option. It was really special
to start first because I could just look forward
and get on with it, and no one caught me so I
finished first too. I want to celebrate and enjoy
this feeling for a while because although it is
amazing, it’s been a tough season and I have
trained hard so I want to rest for a week or two!
After that it’s full gas again because I want to
keep the same rhythm and pace for Dakar as it’s
another dream for me to win.”
In the manufacturers’ championship, it was
Honda who secured the championship title with
a strong showing from its deep bench at Rallye
du Maroc.
“The Rallye du Maroc is over with a last stage
doing two rounds in the dunes of Merzouga”,
summarised Monster Energy Honda Team’s
manager, Ruben Faria.
“This was another fast stage and the average
of over 100km/hour is symptomatic, considering
that part of the road book was composed
of dunes, meaning that the riders are doing
great in terms of speed and navigation. Pablo
Quintanilla was today at his best level, winning
the stage and getting a third place in the overall
standings. Adrien was better, it’s a pity he lost
some time in the end of the stage because he
was fighting for a podium position today. Nacho
was the second to start but he crashed in the
beginning of the stage and could not finish like
he did in the previous days. Here in Morocco we
got another manufacturer’s title of W2RC for
Honda and we are very proud of that. This is the
work of all the team.”

DUCATI POACHES
CAIROLI FROM KTM FOR
NEW MX LINE
I
n a shock announcement, KTM dropped that
long-time collaborator and former MXGP
champion Tony Cairoli was leaving his position
as team manager with the brand. And now we
know why.
As they say, blood runs thicker than water, and
the Sicilian rider has split from KTM to join with
his Italian countrymen in Borgio Panigale as
part of Ducati’s fledgling MX efforts. The Italian
brand has quietly been working away for the
past two years on a new MX platform, which it
has announced will debut as part of next year’s
Italian Motocross Championship.
Like Triumph Motorcycles, which will also debut
its new dirt platform next season, Ducati’s is
a multi-year project that will see the creation
of a complete range of off-road engines and
motorcycles. Ducati is aiming for the models to
gradually become part of a family of knobblytyred motorcycles branded Ducati, starting
within the motocross arena.
Nine-time Motocross World Champion Antonio
94 KIWI RIDER
Cairoli will shift from his management role at KTM
to join Ducati as a high-performance test rider
for the new project. With his help and expertise,
the Italian brand is sure to get a big leg up on the
development of its new range of dirt bikes.
“I am extremely happy to become part of the
universe of Ducati, which has always been a
symbol of Italian spirit throughout the world, and
to begin this exciting new adventure, in an allItalian project”, Cairoli said of the new venture.
“Being able to make my contribution to the
development of the Borgo Panigale motocross
bike is a dream come true and a source of great
pride for me.”
Ducati has also signed a multi-year agreement
with Maddii Racing, one of the most
experienced teams in the motocross paddock,
which will be the reference structure for the MX
racing activities and will take part in the 2024
Italian Motocross Championship with eighttime Italian Champion and 2021 MXoN winner,
Alessandro Lupino, also contracted to Ducati as

racing and test rider.
We can expect Ducati to not enter the
motocross paddock half-cocked with the brand
outlining the project’s goals as “a combination of
the search for lightness pushed to the extreme,
top-of-the-line components and engines
characterised by a very broad power delivery
curve.”
Interestingly, the latter is set to be obtained
thanks to the use of the Ducati’s Desmodromic
valve system, which is used on all the sports bikes
of the Bologna-based company starting from
MotoGP.
“I am proud to announce Ducati’s entry into
Motocross”, Claudio Domenicali, CEO of Ducati
Motor Holding, commented. “A totally new
world for Ducati in which we want to bring our
talent in designing lightweight motorcycles, with
excellent components and high performance
and, above all, which can excite more and more
motorcyclists. Just as we believe that the track
is the best laboratory to develop and test the
bikes that will then be available to customers
and enthusiasts. This is why we have decided to
cooperate with an undisputed champion like
Tony Cairoli who, together with the passion and
dedication of many of us here in Borgo Panigale,
will contribute to making Ducati in off-road
as capable in offering very high-performance
products to its passionate customers as we have
proven on the asphalt. The project is possible
thanks to the company’s excellent results in
recent years and confirms our desire to extend
our presence into new worlds, speak to new
motorcyclists and therefore grow the Ducati
Community.”

CHAMPIONSHIP
P
roving to be the dominant force in the 2023
FIM Hard Enduro World Championship, Red
Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Manuel Lettenbichler
has clinched the championship with a dominant
victory at the Hixpania Hard Enduro in Spain.
With his latest victory, the KTM 300 EXC racer
secured back-to-back world championship titles
with one round to spare.
It’s an unsurprising result, with Lettenbichler
remaining unbeaten throughout the 2023 FIM
Hard Enduro season so far. Lettenbichler made
it five wins in a row with his victory at Hixpania to

secure his second consecutive FIM Hard Enduro
title. It’s been an incredible year for the German
– starting with a win at the Xross Hard Enduro in
Serbia, the 25-year-old went on to dominate at
Red Bull Erzbergrodeo, Red Bull Romaniacs, and
Red Bull Outliers.
In Spain, the opening prologue at Hixpania
running as a non-point paying show race only
due to safety reasons, qualifying was then
carried over to Saturday’s Campoo X-Treme race
– a 40km cross-country that circled the town’s
reservoir. Lettenbichler got off to a great start to
take an early lead but was caught and passed by
closest championship rival, Billy Bolt. Ultimately
settling for third place, Lettenbichler secured
one championship point and a strong start
position for Sunday’s Hixpania Hard Enduro ‘Lost
Roads’ main race.
Starting in a cave, Sunday’s main race promised
to be even tougher than expected due do the

recent rain and fog. Lettenbichler emerged in
second place and immediately set about chasing
down the early leader. As the course led the
riders into the hills, Lettenbichler moved to the
front and didn’t look back. From there, the KTM
300 EXC rider delivered a masterclass in hard
enduro riding, steadily increasing his advantage
over the rest of the field and commanding the
race from the front.
Battling his way up the final climb towards
the checkered flag, Lettenbichler secured the
Hixpania Hard Enduro win and with it, the 2023
FIM Hard Enduro crown.
“Here I am now, fifth race win in a row for this
season and world champion”, Lettenbichler said.
“I had to push so hard today. I got a good start
and was able to pass Billy almost straight away
and from there I just focused and kept up a
good rhythm. Honestly, the day could not have
gone any better for me, the race was awesome.
What can I say? I’m just speechless.”
With the title decided, Lettenbichler has one
final round of the series to face – GetzenRodeo
in early November where the German rider will
be aiming to complete his perfect season with a
victory on home soil.

LONG TERM TEST GASGAS ES700
WORDS AND PHOTOS: Ben Wilkins
A rider can’t wobble
along at 80km/h
forever, it was time our
long term ES700 got
some wind protection.
C
omfort when riding longer distances on
the ES700 definitely improved after fitting
the GasGas Gel Seat a couple of months
back, but it did nothing to address the lack of wind
protection. Keeping up with the flow of traffic at
100km/h is hard work with all that wind against
my upper body. 80km/h is the wind-happy speed
on the bright red Spanish machine. So, I started
daydreaming of fitting a rally tower... but quickly
woke up when I realised I’d need to splash out a
minimum of $1500 to get one. So... I went on the
hunt for a cheaper alternative.
Sadly, GasGas doesn’t do a windshield for its
‘travel’ bike, which is a bit of a shocker. Both
KTM and Husqvarna have a listing on their parts
websites for a windshield, neither of which is the
correct shape for the ES700’s headlight. I did,
however, find one specifically for the GasGas
SM700 by Spanish brand Puig (set up by HRC
MotoGP team boss Alberto Puig). Puig doesn’t list
one for the ES700 specifically.
As the screen is designed for a supermoto it’s
a little shorter than I’d have ideally liked, but I
decided to take a punt on it anyway. There’s no
importer for Puig products in NZ, so I had to order
it in from the UK.
FITTING
It’s pretty simple to fit the Puig windshield.
Remove the headlight mask, line up the supplied
template on the mask, mark the holes with
a marker-pen and drill them. There are three
attachment points that are rubber mounted,
a selection of spacers to lift it away from the
headlight mask and a retainer to hold the brake
hose away from the windshield. All pretty easy and
took about 30 minutes to do.
DOES IT WORK?
Made from 3mm acrylic, the Puig windshield
is 155mm higher than the original. It doesn’t
sound like much, and it doesn’t look like much
either. That said, it actually works pretty well. At
100km/h I’m no longer pulling on the bars to
hold my body against the wind. The windblast
is now directed upwards to the bottom of my
neck area, taking the brunt of the wind off my
torso. This also leaves my helmet in clear air so
there’s no buffeting at all.
I’m pretty happy with it even though I originally
thought it wouldn’t have enough of an effect.
It’d have been nice to be slightly higher, but it’s

good enough. Over Labour Weekend I did a
1000km round trip to Franz Josef taking in the
vast straights of the West Coast, the Rainbow
Road and the Porika 4WD track. It’s high enough
to make the long straights bearable and low
enough to not be at all in the way vision-wise
when off-road. And... it didn’t cost $1500. It’ll
do until I decide if I want to go down the tower
route eventually.
