Ask Judie
Ask Judie
by Judie Solomon, Thistle Needleworks
(J "I have a terrible time every time I must add lettering to my cross stitch, like the bride’s and groom’s names on a wedding sampler. Can you give me any hints to make it easier?"
A. I have found that many stitchers look at the alphabet to be used, count the number of blocks each letter takes, and then run into problems.
The only good way to get the lettering correct is to chart it all out on a separate piece of graph paper. It may seem like more work, but is a lot quicker than having to rip out and re-do stitches!
You would not know this without charting it out but might
naturally stitch it the first way and end up “oft”.
Once you have charted out each line, count the number of
blocks in each line - James has 18 blocks so the center of the
word is at the:
My younger gr middle
This charts out to 25 blocks. How will I center Matthew under
James? One line has an even number of stitches, the other has an odd number. I see three options:
a) James will have 9 blocks left and right of center and Matthew will have 13 blocks left of center and 12 blocks to the right of center.
b) Change4^ to TO thus shortening the line by one so it
will have 12 blocks to the left and right of center.
c) Leave the M alone, but remove the “tail” on the “a”, raise the crossbars on the “t”s, and move them closer together to shorten the line to 24 blocks. If you do this, remember to remove the “tail” on the “a” in James.
Basting a center line will help you get your words centered when you begin to stitch them. If the area is not too large, you can also do some additional math to calculate the margins on either side of the letters, as an additional check. For example, if the area available is 40 blocks..40-18=224-2=11 blocks
from left edge to beginning of James and40-24=16-i-8=2 blocks to the beginning of Matthew.
Happy Stitching (& Charting!)
