OCTOBER 2022
One of the most popular exports out of Japan to the West is without a doubt Anime.
Since the days of Dragonball Z and Bleach to the early days of Robotech, anime
has always found a huge audience out West. And that trend continues to this day,
with Anime bigger than it’s ever been, and for good reason. Anime offers incredible
animations, with wonderful stories and a varied array of genres to capture every single
type of imagination out there. And thanks to streaming services like CrunchyRoll and
Funimation, the latest and greatest from Japan is now but a button press away. In 2021,
anime fans were treated to some amazing shows and 2022 is shaping up even better.
So here are the must watch shows available to you right now in 2022.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu
no Yaiba Entertainment
District Arc
The initial Mugen Train Arc was first released in 2019 and
saw a family is attacked by demons and only two members
survive - Tanjiro and his sister Nezuko, who is turning
into a demon slowly. Tanjiro set out to become a demon
slayer to avenge his family and cure his sister. So fair
warning, watch that arc first as it has major implications
for the Entertainment District Arc. But if you watched
and enjoyed the Mugen Train Arc then this next release
is a must-watch anime. The Entertainment District Arc
once again sees our hero Tanjiro and his friends Inosuke
and Zenitsu following flashy Uzui, the Sound Hishara, as
he goes undercover in the Entertainment District to sniff
out a demon hiding in the midst. Tanjiro and his friends
disguise themselves as courtesans and try to figure out
where the powerful demon is hiding. The majority of the
arc is around the final battle against two powerful demons
and further explores the brother-sister parallel between
Tanjiro and Nezuko and the two demons. It is beautifully
animated with amazing fight scenes and a heart-wrenching
story that will have you gripped from start to finish.
Spy x Family
A show that had as much potential to be amazing as it
had to be an absolute failure, but fortunately it is the
former as Spy x Family is one of the most exciting anime
to be released in a long time. In the bustling Ostanian
city of Berlint, special agent Twilight dons the alias of
Loid Forger, an esteemed psychiatrist. However, his true
intention is to gather intelligence on prominent politician
Donovan Desmond, who only appears rarely in public at
his sons’ school: the prestigious Eden Academy. Enlisting
the help of unmarried city hall clerk Yor Briar to act as his
wife and adopting the curious six-year-old orphan Anya
as his daughter, Loid enacts his master plan. He will enroll
Anya in Eden Academy, where Loid hopes she will excel
and give him the opportunity to meet Donovan without
arousing suspicion. Unfortunately for Loid, even a man of
his talents has trouble playing the figure of a loving father
and husband. And just like Loid is hiding his true identity,
Yor, who is an underground assassin known as Thorn
Princess and Anya an esper who can read people’s minds,
have no plans to disclose their own secrets either. Although
this picture-perfect family is founded on deception, the
Forgers gradually come to understand that the love they
share for one another trumps all else. It’s a heartwarming
story about family, set amongst international spy intrigue
and wonderful action.

My Dress-Up Darling
For those who prefer the anime to be more about
relationships and less about monsters and mechs, then
My Dress-Up Darling is a wonderful addition to the genre.
On paper the plot might sound a bit too whimsical form
some, but behind the whimsy lies a truly touching story of
two people from different backgrounds finding a common
ground. High school student Wakana Gojou spends
his days perfecting the art of making hina dolls, hoping
to eventually reach his grandfather’s level of expertise.
While his fellow teenagers busy themselves with pop
culture, Gojou finds bliss in sewing clothes for his dolls.
Nonetheless, he goes to great lengths to keep his unique
hobby a secret, as he believes that he would be ridiculed
were it revealed. Enter Marin Kitagawa, an extraordinarily
pretty girl whose confidence and poise are in stark contrast
to Gojou’s meekness. It would defy common sense for
the friendless Gojou to mix with the likes of Kitagawa,
who is always surrounded by her peers. However, the
unimaginable happens when Kitagawa discovers Gojou’s
prowess with a sewing machine and brightly confesses to
him about her own hobby: cosplay. Because her sewing
skills are pitiable, she decides to enlist his help. As Gojou
and Kitagawa work together on one cosplay outfit after
another, they cannot help but grow close—even though
their lives are worlds apart.
The Orbital Children
Mitsuo Iso is one of the most celebrated animators and
directors in anime, working on all-time classics such as
FLCL and Ghost in the Shell. Yet it’s been 15 years since the
last time we had the pleasure of experiencing this talented
man’s work. Fortunately, the wait is over as he returns with
The Orbital Children, a six-episode anime exclusively for
Netflix. And thankfully it’s been worth the wait.
In the year 2045, the Internet and artificial intelligence
has become widespread in outer space. Following a
massive accident at a space station, a group of children is
left behind. Using narrowband and SNS, low intelligence
AI, and smartphone-controlled drones, they overcome
numerous crises. Through some wonderful world-building
brought to life through beautiful animation, The Orbital
Children weaves a coming-of-age story that takes the
lives of five unsuspecting children and places them at the
precipice of humanity’s expansion into the vast unknown
of space. It’s a dense and beautifully animated anime that is
as rewarding on the first watch as it is on the tenth.

Ranking of Kings
In this surprise hit of 2022, Ranking of Kings is a fantasy
series where monarchs are measured on their deeds
and strength. Unfortunately for the current prince, he is
lacking on both accounts.
The people of the kingdom look down on the young Prince
Bojji, who can neither hear nor speak. They call him “The
Useless Prince” while jeering at his supposed foolishness.
However, while Bojji may not be physically strong, he is
certainly not weak of heart. When a chance encounter
with a shadow creature should have left him traumatized,
it instead makes him believe that he has found a friend
amidst those who only choose to notice his shortcomings.
He starts meeting with Kage, the shadow, regularly, to the
point where even the otherwise abrasive creature begins
to warm up to him. Kage and Bojji’s unlikely friendship lays
the budding foundations of the prince’s journey, one where
he intends to conquer his fears and insecurities. Despite
the constant ridicule he faces, Bojji resolves to fulfill his
desire of becoming the best king he can be. Although this
might sound like your typical underdog story, Bojji is one
of the most loveable leading men in anime and one can’t
help but to fall in love with the little prince and cheer his
every move.
Healer Girl
Anime isn’t known for its musical numbers and one would
be hard-pressed to find an anime based purely on the
musical genre. However, HEaler Girl is the first show we’ve
seen that comes close to being a full-blown musical. Of
course, there is more to this than just musical numbers. An
established discipline on par with conventional medical
approaches, “vocal medicine” is the practice of using songs
to treat health conditions and injuries. Young people
around the world strive to master the art and become
“healers” to help people through the power of their
voices. Among the many healers in training is Kana Fujii,
a naturally talented singer who was inspired to pursue
the profession after a life-changing experience. Along
with the driven Reimi Itsushiro and the easygoing Hibiki
Morishima, Kana trains at Karasuma Phoniatric Clinic
under the stern yet kind mentorship of Ria Karasuma.
As they endeavor to achieve their dreams, Kana and
her friends meet various colorful healers along the way,
discovering that there is much more to vocal medicine
than just diligent studying. If 2022 has been a tough year
for you then Healer Girl is the perfect medicine. It’s truly
a feel-good anime that will brighten up even the darkest of
days and have you bopping along to the wonderful musical
numbers that feature in each episode.

Ya Boy Kongming!
Arguably one of the funniest anime to hit 2022 is Ya
Boy Kongming!, a wonderful new take on the fish out of
water genre that is so popular in the anime sphere. Zhuge
Kongming earned a reputation as one of the greatest
tacticians of the Three Kingdoms period of third-century
China. Having led his army through countless grueling
victories, Kongming falls gravely ill during the Battle of
Wuzhang Plains. The weariness and regret stemming from
the seemingly never-ending war catch up to him, and as
he draws his final breath, Kongming wishes that if he were
to reincarnate, he would be reborn in a more peaceful era.
His wish comes true, and Kongming wakes up in modernday Tokyo with a younger body and his memories intact.
Thrust into an unfamiliar world, he finds his way into
a nightclub and meets Eiko Tsukimi, an aspiring singer
whose performance immediately captivates him. Pitying
his confusion, Eiko takes Kongming under her wing and
teaches him about the current world, which leads to
Kongming’s interest in contemporary music. Seeing Eiko’s
immense musical potential, Kongming vows to make the
world recognize her and soon takes on the role of her
manager. Unsurprisingly, the music industry is unforgiving
to those who make even the slightest mistakes. Still,
Kongming is determined to accomplish his goals—even if
he must utilize the war stratagems he famously used in his
previous life!

Such an absolute honor to
have you on FHM! What
are you currently working
on? Thank you! I am so honored
to have been chosen to appear in
FHM. I recently became a puppy
Mom to a Shetland Sheepdog
named Bandit and he is my
current obsession, passion and
job! I’ve always had a love for
animals and Bandit has certainly
stolen my heart.
What is your idea of a really
good time? Spending time
with my family and friends is my
favorite activity. Living in the
Northeast, I love hiking and of
course the snow! My absolute
favorite thing to do is leaf peeping
in the fall. I can’t wait to take my
new little guy, Bandit, along with
me this year as we explore the
Northeast during the beauty of
Autumn.
Top 3 best moments of your
career? I was a competitive
tennis player as a junior and had
hoped to turn pro. Winning the
state championship when I was
only 13 was certainly a highlight.
When I was side-lined with a
recurring ankle injury, I had to
put that dream aside. I graduated
with a degree in Culinary Arts
and Tourism but found my true
passion as a Creator. I would have
to say the top 3 moments would
include finishing as a finalist in
the Miss Jetset contest, joining
the Playboy CENTERFOLD
platform and of course, being
selected to appear here on FHM!
What would you say is your
signature look? I adore old
classic films and would have
to say I draw inspiration from

glamour girls. I love sexy and
classy lingerie and big hair - did
I mention I’m from the South?
Haha
What is the fastest way to
get a smile on your face? This
is an easy one - Bring me a large
bucket of Movie Theatre popcorn
layered with extra butter - Instant
Smile!
What are some of
your favorite outdoor
activities? Living in the
Northeast has always been
my dream as I was raised in
Charleston, South Carolina.
Since moving here, I have
developed a passion for hiking in
the snow and just enjoying the
beauty of winter weather. I also
love traveling south to the sunny
beaches where my inner beach
girl resides! And of course, I still
hit the tennis courts at every
opportunity.
3 ultimate deal breakers
when it comes to men? Also
an easy question - Dishonesty,
no sense of loyalty, and lacking
the qualities of a gentleman. No
exceptions!
Never have I ever... Been
skydiving and I never will. Haha,
I have a pretty big fear of heights
so this is not happening.
Top 3 myth busters when it
comes to models? I believe
some people have an erroneous
idea that models are not
intelligent. This is completely
false as some of the most
intelligent women I have ever
known are models. A lot of men
tell me that they are intimidated
by models as they have an idea
that models are self-absorbed or
would not give them a chance.
Once again, this is not true. Most
models I know are very kind and
giving of themselves. Personally,
a man who can make me laugh
is always tops with me and I’m
friendly to everyone! I think the
greatest misconception regarding
models is that it is easy work
which is totally false. Modeling
and running a business is a
full-time job and requires selfdiscipline and a lot of hours.
What is the best way
to approach you as an
admirer? I love it when a
gentleman approaches with a
nice smile and a genuine hello
rather than a pickup line. Just be
cool and funny, I am very easy to
talk with and I love to have fun!
Of course, it doesn’t hurt if you
offer me a glass of red wine... my
favorite!
Where can our readers
catch up with you and stay
updated with your work? You
can find me on Playboy
CENTERFOLD or on OnlyFans.
I also have a personal website:
AshleyPerkinsOfficial.Com or via
social media.
We are so happy to have
gotten to know you a little
bit! Any last words out there
for our readers? Absolutely!
First of all, I want to thank FHM
for giving me this opportunity. I
would also like to thank all of my
supporters who have been with
me throughout my modeling
career. I love you guys!

THE
BEST
MODERN
JRPGS
YOU SHOULD
PLAY RIGHT
NOW
Fans of the Japanese role-playing game genre have truly
been some of the luckiest gamers on the planet, considering the wealth of top-class games they have access to
and with the release of the recent Xenoblade game, that
list continues to grow. But what if you’re new to the genre
or you played Xenoblade Chronicles 3 and now you want
more JRPG action? Well you are in luck as there are some
amazing games in the gnre you can play right now, regardless of your preferred console of choice. Here are four of
the must-play JRPGs you can play right now.

The Yakuza series has long been celebrated as an over-thetop Japanese crime drama with epic battles and dramatic
story-telling. What it was not known for was its RPG
elements and turn-based combat. So when developer Ryu
Ga Gotoku announced that the 7th game in the series
would be a soft reboot and a shift from action-adventure
beat-em’-up to turn-based JRPG fans of the series were up
in arms. That is until they actually played it and realized it’s
one of the best JRPG of 2020. You play as Ichiban Kasuga, a
low-ranking grunt of a low-ranking yakuza family in Tokyo,
who faces an 18-year prison sentence after taking the fall
for a crime he didn’t commit. Never losing faith, he loyally
serves his time and returns to society to discover that no
one was waiting for him on the outside, and his clan has
been destroyed by the man he respected most. Ichiban
sets out to discover the truth behind his family’s betrayal
and take his life back, drawing a ragtag group of society’s
outcasts to his side: Adachi, a rogue cop, Nanba, a homeless
ex-nurse, and Saeko, a hostess on a mission. Together, they
are drawn into a conflict brewing beneath the surface in
Yokohama and must rise to become the heroes they never
expected to be. Yakuza: Like A Dragon was celebrated for
its emotional story, characters exuding lovable charm,
combat, and retaining the campy spirit of Yakuza’s side
missions. It is an essential game to play if you’re a fan of the
Yakuza series and especially if you’re a fan of JRPGs.
20
OCTOBER 2022
The Persona series has long been heralded as one of the
premium JRPG’s ever to be created and with Perona 5
Royal you can clearly see why. Originally released as a
PlayStation exclusive in 2017, it featured over 90 hours
of gameplay and the 2020s update Royal added even
more content to that. The Shin Megami Tensei spin-off
series exploded in international popularity, praised for its
street-level and intimate story and characters, layered lifesimulation elements, and thoroughly engaging twists on
the turn-based combat system. The art style and acid-jazz
soundtrack combine to create an experience that oozes
with a slick anime style. You play as Joker, a high-school
student recently transferred to a new school. By day, enjoy
your high school life in the big city, spending your time
however you please. The bonds you form with the people
you meet will grow into a great power to help you fulfill
your destiny. After school, use your Metaverse Navigator
smartphone app to infiltrate Palaces, surreal worlds
created from the hearts of corrupt adults--and slip away
to your double life as a phantom thief. With the power of
Persona, make these criminals have a change of heart by
stealing the Treasure of their distorted desires. Join your
new friends in the fight to reform society with your own
sense of justice. Even better news for gamers is that this
once PlayStation exclusive will soon be joining GamePass
so you have no excuse to play one of the most celebrated
JRPGs of modern times.

Final Fantasy
VII Remake
Final Fantasy VII is seen by many as the ultimate JRPG,
the game that made JRPGs as popular as they are today
and one of the greatest stories told in gaming. So of course
when a remake was announced, fans around the world
cheered as they got to experience one of the greatest
games ever made in glorious 4K on modern systems.
When it was released in 2020, fans quickly realized it was
not a shot-for-shot remake, but instead a retelling of the
original story. People were up in arms until they actually
finished the game, quickly realizing that the Remake is a
wonderful take on a wonderful game. FF7R was praised
for fleshing out the cast of characters’ respective story
arcs, but perhaps the biggest praise was reserved for its
superb combat system. It essentially perfects the shift
into real-time action that XV tried before it, providing a
deeply exhilarating experience. By exploiting mako, the
lifeblood of the planet, through their mako reactors, the
Shinra Electric Power Company has all but seized control
of the entire world. A ragtag group of idealists, known as
Avalanche, are one of the last bastions of resistance. Cloud,
an elite SOLDIER operative-turned-mercenary, takes part
in an Avalanche operation to destroy Mako Reactor 1 in
the city of Midgar. The bombing plunges the city into fiery
chaos, and Cloud is tormented by visions of a bitter enemy
long thought dead. Once more begins a story that will
shape the destiny of an entire world.

OCTOBER 2022
Tales Of
Arise
The Tales of series has been going for decades but never
quite reached the fame or popularity that a Final Fantasy
or Dragon Quest ever has. That is all about to change
with the latest release of Tales of Arise. Developer Bandai
Namco released a true next-gen experience and ticked
all the right boxes to deliver not only a wonderful Tales
of game, but a truly wonderful JRPG experience. On
the planet Dahna, reverence has always been given to
Rena, the planet in the sky, as a land of the righteous and
divine. Stories handed down for generations became
truth and masked reality for the people of Dahna. For 300
years, Rena has ruled over Dahna, pillaging the planet of
its resources and stripping people of their dignity and
freedom. Tales of Arise tells the story of two people, born
on different worlds, each looking to change their fate and
create a new future. The story is epic and will see you meet
various wonderful characters along the way. The worlds
themselves look amazing, especially on Series X and PS5,
and truly feels like a next-gen experience. The combat
itself is wonderfully animated and is incredibly in-depth,
allowing for a customizable experience. If you’ve never
played a Tales of game, then Tales of Arise is a perfect
jumping-off point. It features everything that makes a
great JRPG and the friendships made in the game will stick
with you long after the end credits have rolled.

XENOBLADE
CHRONICLES 3
The Japanese Role-Playing Game, better known
as a JRPG, has been a staple of gaming since the
early days of the beloved pastime. Offering multiple hours of epic stories, insane battles against
enemies the size of skyscrapers and hours upon
hours of leveling up your team members. From
Final Fantasy to Dragon Quest to the Tales of series, JRPGs have become one of the most popular genres of all time. In recent years, Nintendo’s
Xenoblade series quietly became arguably one
of the most respected and anticipated JRPG and
with the new release of Xenoblade Chronicles 3,
the series proves that it hasn’t lost any steam. Developer Monolith Soft has once again taken what
made the previous installments so successful and
built on top of that to deliver the best Xenoblade
experience to date.
24
OCTOBER 2022
Xenoblade Chronicles 3, as with all previous
entries, is a Nintendo exclusive that takes
place on Aionios, a world of natural splendor,
and the backdrop to an endless conflict
between two opposing nations: Keves and
Agnus. Time is of the essence for the people
of Aionios, who fight relentlessly to extend
their lives long enough to realize a 10-year
period of service. You play as Noah, Mio and
their friends as they traverse epic landscapes,
battle ferocious creatures and fight to
break the never-ending cycle of violence
that binds their homelands. Unknowingly
sent on a covert mission during which they
have a fateful encounter with each other’s
undercover squad, the time has come for
six soldiers from the rival factions, Keves’
Noah, Lanz and Eunie and Agnus’ Mio, Taion
and Sena, to set aside their distrust for one
another and defy their fate, in an effort to
break the never-ending cycle of violence
that binds their homelands and expose
those who are responsible for it. The key to
a successful JRPG lies within its story and its
combat and Xenoblade Chronicles 3 excels
in both regards. The story itself is heartfelt
and wonderfully told and after hundreds of
hours you will feel a strong connection to
the characters as well as care deeply about
the struggles they faced. The dialogue
is exceptionally written and emotively
delivered by their respective voice actors,
and the storyline’s exploration of their
relationships is unwaveringly meaningful
throughout. The story itself also doesn’t shy
away from handling mature topics either,
and considering Xenoblade Chronicles 3’s
darker premise there will be quite a few
heart-wrenching moments throughout.
Of course, a great story will fall flat if the
gameplay and combat is weak, but once
again Xenoblade Chronicles 3 excels in this
department as well. Overall the combat feels
like a culmination of the previous entries
best ideas, with Monolith Soft learning what
worked and what didn’t from previous games
and applying the best parts to the latest
outing. You can control six characters in your
party, which you can freely switch between
mid-combat. There are three main classes
to choose from, from Attackers to Healers
to Defenders, each one playing a vital role
in your party’s success. You can also recruit
Hero characters throughout the game that
will join your party of six to add that extra
oomph to your party’s abilities. Fans of
previous Xenoblade games will feel right at
home with the combat system, with favorites
like Auto-Attack and Arts, building Aggro
and performing an Art Combo such as Break,
Topple, Daze and Burst to purge an enemy’s
rage status all featuring heavily in the games
combat system.
Xenoblade 3’s class system is also excellent,
featuring enough depth to allow players to
experiment with different combinations to
see what works best for their chosen style.
And thanks to the ease of switching between
your six chosen party members, you’ll
quickly get a feel for how each character
plays and what the best tactics would be for
each. Xenoblade Chronicles 3 combat really
shines when it comes to the lengthier battles
against bosses of high-level monsters. This
is where strategy will play a crucial role and
will mean the difference between victory or
defeat. Another new addition to the series
are the Ouroboros powers. By triggering a
process known as Interlinking, specific tagteam pairs in your party can fuse together
into a giant form called Ouroboros. These
mighty beings can use powerful Ouroboros
Arts to make quick work of even the most
formidable foes, but act fast – once the time
limit is up, your characters will stand apart
once more.
Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is a wonderful entry
to the Xenoblade series and developers
Monolith Soft did an amazing job in
delivering one of the best JRPG experiences
this year. The third main entry in the series
is a massive improvement over the previous
entry, from gameplay to visuals and will
be a treat for any JRPG fan out there.
Considering that the Nintendo Switch
is starting to show its age, Monolith Soft
extracted every bit of power from Nintendo’s
handheld to deliver a wonderful and
emotional experience that will definitely be
in the game of the year discussions come the
end of the year.

THE
RIGHT
FOLDABLE
phone
FOR
YOU
Not many would have predicted a few
years ago that the foldable phone would be
as popular as it is in 2022, but then again
not many would have predicted the topquality phones that have appeared on the
market recently. Now, many people might
be put off by the term foldable, but it does
have some serious perks to it as you’ll
see in our list below of the best foldable
phones on the market right now.
OCTOBER 2022
27
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4
As expected, Samsung would be the ones to create arguably the
best foldable phone on the market right now. With its impressive
main and cover screens, the Fold 4 has also been optimized for
multitasking. Although the device might seem similar in design
to the Fold 3, it’s what’s inside that counts. The Fold 4 features
a much more powerful Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chipset, a great
50MP primary camera, and updated software that was far better
suited to its large 7.6-inch screen. It is still quite expensive though
and the camera might not be the best Samsung has to offer, as
well as it not being an essential upgrade if you already own the
Fold 3, but for any newcomers to the foldable space, the Fold 4 is
without a doubt the best phone to go for.
Huawei Mate Xs
For years now, Huawei has delivered top-quality phones with fantastic features at very affordable prices and the Mate Xs is another top-quality delivery from the Chinese manufacturer and an
excellent execution of the foldable concept. It’s an ‘outie’ foldable,
with only a single external screen that’s either unfolded flat for
an 8-inch tablet-size display or folded closed for a 6.6-inch format. It’s also powerful, with a high-end Kirin 990 chipset, 8GB of
RAM, 512GB of storage, a quad-lens camera (led by a 40MP main
sensor), a 4,500mAh battery, and a stylish, notch-free design. Of
course, being a Huawei device there are a few drawbacks. The
biggest one is the lack of access to Google apps and its services
so you do lose out on a lot of functionality app-wise. Another
minor drawback is how tough it is to get hold of this device in the
States, but one can still order it online unlocked. Even with those
drawbacks, the Mate Xs is a great foldable phone with a great
display and comes highly recommended.
Motorola Razr 2020
Back in 2004, Motorola released the Razr V3, a phone that took
the world by storm and was arguably one of the most popular
phones during that time with its sleek design and must-have features. Now 18 years later Motorola is rebooting its Razr line to
invoke nostalgia and offer a decent clamshell folding device. The
device looks great and features a large 2.7-inch display on the
outside that allows for basic app browsing, texting, and previewing selfies effectively too. Being able to take selfies with the same
48MP main lens that you use when the phone is open is extremely
convenient. The snapping open of the phone is hugely satisfying and snaps in place with a perfect click. Although the phone
looks nice and does have a few unique features it is let down by a
below-average plastic internal screen and a rather paltry 256GB
storage that is not expandable. The battery life is decent but nothing too spectacular. Considering how expensive the Razr 2020 is,
one might be tempted to look at its competitors that offer better
features for the same price, but purely on nostalgia value the Razr
2020 is a must-have.

Unlike other phones on this list, the Surface Duo 2 isn’t exactly
a foldable phone, but rather two separate screens held together
by a hinge. The Surface Duo 2 features two separate 5.3-inch
panels that open up to give you an 8.3-inch workspace. You can
run apps across the two panels, though you’ll have to contend
with a gap running right down the middle of your app where the
screens come together. It’s better when using optimized apps
where different tasks are relegated to different screens. You can
also multitask, running two apps on different sides of the device.
The Duo 2 is a major upgrade from the original Duo, with a big
boost to processing power as well as a sizable upgrade to the
cameras. The design is as slick as ever and it really is a goodlooking phone. If you’re looking for a true foldable experience
then the Samsung offering might be your best bet, but if the
screen separation doesn’t bother you then the Surface Duo 2 is
definitely worth a look.

The philosophy of identity has been
the subject of unceasing debate since
the origin of humankind. If you are so
minded, you can read the classical scholarly
accounts, including the marathon poem
‘The Odyssey,’ understood to have been
penned by Homer around the eighth
century BC, which, amongst other things,
connects with the notion of self. Since I
was a kid, and old enough to have deep
and meaningful conversations with
myself, the enigma of personality has been
captivating. As I matured these ambiguities
lessened somewhat as I negotiated a career
– starting as a police officer
getting
married and becoming a father. Loss has
also shaped who I am. However, since
adolescence one identifying feature has
remained fairly consistent – the way I look.
Save a much later life decision to shave off
all my hair, my facial features have retained
a consistent depiction. Flicking through
family photograph albums the immediate
recognition – even decades earlier – is
effortless.
Our thin yet resilient skin – the largest
human organ – and especially the wrapping
around the contours of our faces, provides
a pictorial element of identity to the
outside world. How much of our true self is
represented by our outward appearance is
open to conjecture, but what if you decide
to significantly change this shop window
to the world? Does your overall identity
change? Do people treat you differently?
Do you migrate to a different you? For
better or worse?
The more I wrestled with these
uncertainties two themes became
dominant. First, my own decision to
change the way I look. Having made this
landmark choice, my confidence grew to
another level, and I was cool with myself.
Perhaps for the first time in my entire life,
my reflection was pleasing to me and – in
my opinion at least – stepping away from
the norm for a guy of my age I felt excited,
energized, and rebellious – other facets of
my identity that I had previously toned
down to conform. I like the new me! The
second issue is perhaps more abstract but
nonetheless connected to a purposeful
decision to change how the world saw
individuality. The link? Tai Woffinden
the three times individual speedway world
champion. The 32-year-old athlete born
in the UK, but having grown up in Perth,
Western Australia after emigrating with
his family, is the undisputed painted man
of this adrenalized motor sport where
500cc motorcycles accelerate faster than
a Formula 1 car, with the added risk of
having no brakes. His decision to illustrate
his body and parts of his face is a line of
enquiry I needed to follow in my quest to
better understand the human construct of identity.
Madonna once said, “I am my own experiment. I am my
own work of art.” How closely does this resonate with Tai
Woffinden? “It not only resonates with me, but with every
person. Although there are millions of people all over the
world, we are each unique in our own special ways. I can see
where Madonna is coming from, and I agree with her.”
Tai was right – identity is never ordinary and should never
be ordained by others. Madonna’s take added a vital new
dimension to self. When looking at my reflection in the mirror
I was actually admiring a piece of art – and the rest of the
world can marvel at it for free!
When did your body art start and what was the
trigger? “I just wanted tattoos when I was young. Mum and
dad weren’t that happy; dad only had a standard one on his
forearm. When I was fifteen and racing my dad challenged me
to beat a couple of older guys, not expecting me to do so. I beat
them both – so a deal’s a deal and I got a tattoo!”
American writer, Jack London, proclaimed, “Show me a man
with a tattoo and I’ll show you a man with an interesting
past.” What’s your story Tai? “I grew up in Western Australia
and rode motorbikes. I came out to Europe to become a
professional, but I was kind of playing at it for the first few
years – coming home and going out on big benders with all
my mates and letting my hair down for three months every
summer back in Australia. This was good fun and I absolutely
loved it!” Tai then paused as he reflected upon the moment
it all changed. “My dad passed away in 2010. That was like a
switch – from a teenager to becoming a man overnight. I got
my head down and focused on my career.”
Tai’s effervescence quickly returned as he casually added that
he then won a few world titles. This, an understatement of
epic proportions when his individual and team titles across
many countries are tallied up.
“There is not really much left for me to do other than win
more world championships.” A driving ambition that won’t
please his rivals.
The people I know who have tattoos have mostly
chosen to be discrete with their locations, and most
can be covered with clothing. You have prominent
ones on your face and hands too. Why did you make
this choice? “I just wanted to be different. I saw a great quote
once that went something like this: ‘What are you going to
do with all those tattoos when you are older?’ and I think the
response was something along the lines of, ‘What are you
OCTOBER 2022
going to do when you get older – look like
everyone else?’ I thought that this was quite
insightful when I read it.”
Tai disclosed his inner courage by taking
on his mum – who dares do that? I’ve tried
and failed miserably! “I had my sleeves
done and my mum said, ‘please don’t get
your hands done.’ I said I wouldn’t, and she
replied, ‘you had better not!’ If she hadn’t
said that last bit I probably wouldn’t have
got them done.” Who are you kidding Tai?
Over the years mum has become far more
accepting; nonetheless, his face is still
wholly out of bounds.
“It just progressed then to my neck as I had
run out of space on my chest, and then a
little bit on the side of my face.”
Although Tai has considered more on his
head, he heeds the wishes of partner Faye.
“If she gave me the green light I’d have more
OCTOBER 2022
on my face, but I will respect her decision
since she has to look at me every day.”
How have others reacted to your
look? “It depends on which country you
are talking about. US, Australia, UK, and
Western Europe – not really a problem.
Further east – for example, Poland, Russia,
and Ukraine – older people do tend to stare
and look down at me.”
How do you react to your look? “It’s
just me now. I’ve seen photographs of me
when I was younger without tattoos and I
think ‘oh my God, I look so weird!’ I love
my look. I’m very happy with it.”
“Like a lot of people with tattoos, if I could
I would start again. I’ve got some really
amazing ideas – the most insane body art!
But I’ve kind of done it from fifteen and
added and added. Sometimes the guy will
come to my house and tattoo me, and I’ll
flick through the pictures and think that
looks sick, where can we put it? Then
boom, it’s done! Some have meanings but
some are just filling in the gaps.”
Identity, image, and profession are
intrinsically intertwined. You risk
your life for the entertainment of
others – how important is danger in
your life? “Danger is really important in
my life but not only from the aspect of my
job. Danger gives you that adrenalin and
I’m an adrenalin junkie. I ride a motorbike
for a living for a start, although I don’t
actually get that much of a buzz anymore.
It’s something I’ve done over and over and
over again for so many years and that buzz
does die off a bit. I’m searching in other
places.”
“I raced a sprint car in Australia. It’s an
absolute weapon of a thing. Once I had
done a backflip on a BMX, I did it on a
OCTOBER 2022
OCTOBER 2022
motocross bike. I’m trying to organise a
double backflip too.” Tai then reeled off
details of his other daredevil pursuit –
skydiving – acknowledging that once he
had finished jumping out of airplanes he
would start jumping off cliffs, adding, “The
more danger, the more adrenalin, the more
buzz, and the more excitement. I’m forever
chasing that vibe.”
He concluded with the sober realization of:
“Where do you stop?”
No brakes and no gears, racing a
powerful engine essentially supported
by two wheels – surely you have to be
crazy to ride speedway? Tai was adamant
in his reply: “No! You could say that about
many other sports. For many people
looking in on what I do on my YouTube
channel they may think that it is absolutely,
but riding a speedway bike to me is like you
walking down the road. When you walk
down a path 99.9% of the time, you do so
without tripping up. That’s the same for
me on a speedway bike because I’ve done
it for so long. I began when I was twelve
and started riding speedway in 2002. It’s
become second nature.”
OCTOBER 2022
We share the same significant loss –
that of our dads. My dad was my hero,
and he first took me to speedway
where I saw your dad, Rob, ride.
Would you please tell me about the
influence your dad had on your
life? “My dad was more my best mate than
my dad. Obviously, there were times when
he had to be the father figure and discipline
me for being a little out of control; but the
majority of the time he was my best mate.
We traveled together around Europe in the
early years, taking in different countries
– Sweden, Poland, Denmark, Croatia,
Slovenia, Germany – virtually everywhere.”
“Then his life was cut short, and he didn’t
get to see me achieve the greater things that
I have accomplished in my career. But I’m
sure he’s watching down from above.”
In his compelling autobiography – Raw
Speed – Tai wrote this powerfully poignant
tribute: “For Dad, my best friend, my
teacher, my travelling companion, my father.
Everything I have achieved came from what
he taught me about life and how to live it.” I
took a photograph of this page as this spoke of
my dad too. Thank you Tai.
I often think that the majority of
people are so wrapped up in life that
they rarely stop to consider who they
really are – their identity. You display
a powerful sense of self. What is Tai
Woffinden’s message to those who
have yet to discover themselves? “My
message to anyone is live every day,
don’t waste any opportunities and take a
moment out of your hectic day just to sit
there and appreciate what you do have and
not what you want.”
Meeting Tai in person for the first time at
the 2022 FIM Speedway Grand Prix of
Great Britain was an opportunity I didn’t
intend to waste, and the premium risk taker
took my understanding of identity to a new
level. Often what lies beneath is obscured
by what someone looks like and our own
latent prejudices. But Tai the sage stands
proud in an often confusing landscape
of self-doubt, and his personal insights
perfectly compliment the words of writer
Theodor Seuss Geisel who, under his pen
name of Dr Seuss, concluded, “Be who you
are and say what you feel because those
who mind don’t matter and those who
matter don’t mind.”

Such an absolute honor to have you
on FHM! What are you currently
working on? Thank you. I am a romance
author and have written the books, Law
& Disorder, Etched in Stone and Stepping
Stone. I’m a huge advocate for mental health.
A percentage of Stepping Stone’s profits are
going towards the Anxiety and Depression
Association of America (ADAA). I have always
had anxiety. Mental health challenges are often
seen as taboo. I write characters with realistic
issues, so people feel less alone.
What is your idea of a really good time? A
little one. A two. A one, two, three. A three. A
five. A four. A three, two. A two. A two. Four,
six, two. Four, six, four, two. Two. Four, seven.
Five. Seven. Six. Seven, seven, seven, seven,
seven, seven, seven, seven, seven, SEVEN!!!
Top 3 best moments of your
career? Receiving beautiful cover blurbs
for Stepping Stone from New York Times
bestselling authors I admire: Meredith Wild,
J. Kenner and Cherry Adair. I was blown
away. Writing sex advice for Cosmopolitan
and other women’s media outlets. Hey, if I had
to be an expert in something… Now, the cover
of FHM UK. A cover story has always been on
my bucket list.
What would you say is your signature
look? I’m always in my PJs. When people come
over, I don’t bother getting dressed. I often
drive to family and friends’ houses in pajamas
and hope I don’t get pulled over by the police.
They’ll probably give me funny looks.
What is the fastest way to get a smile on
your face? A man to make me forget about Dry
July and thirst trap me to the max. I’ll summon
him to the nearest bar lounge, and we’ll get
acquainted over a cocktail. Hold the tail.

OCTOBER 2022
What are some of your favorite outdoor
activities? I enjoy long walks with my Maltese
Shih Tzu named Groot. Walking clears my
head and I do a lot of reflecting during that
time. It helps drown out the anxiety, provides
time out and takes my mind off stresses. I feel
the same way about writing.
3 ultimate deal breakers when it comes
to men? Unreliable, inconsistent and disloyal.
Those traits trigger my anxiety.
Never have I ever… Jumped on a man
wearing a camel-colored trench coat and
ridden off into the sunset, being part of his
happy ending. There is no camel without a few
good humps and my lovely lady lumps.
Top 3 myth busters when it comes to
models? I’m an author, not a model. But one
stereotype is models are like Zoolander. I wish
I could be that simple and have that level of
vacancy.
What is the best way to approach you as
an admirer? I’m a huge foodie. Slide me the
spaghetti and we can recreate Lady and the
Tramp. Don’t forget the meatballs and pour
some sugar on me.
Where can our readers catch up with you
and stay updated with your work? I would
love to hear from you. Please keep up to date
with me on my social media and website.
We are so happy to have gotten to know
you a little bit! Any last words out there
for our readers? Yes, my books are the
perfect escape for the women in your lives, or
anyone who enjoys romance. I bet the men
that would buy my books have a big dic…

BANGED
UP
a mother’s story
by Ian Kirke | Twitter @ianjkirke
A lifetime ago, aged 19, I joined the police
with, if I’m totally honest, a principal yearning
to be looked after. As an employer, this
respected profession gave me everything –
job security, a decent wage, prospects, status,
companionship, a roof over my head, and
identity. My self-worth, for an insecure guy
lacking in worldly wisdom, was immediate
and all that was required of me was to do the
bidding of the State. This, roughly speaking,
was arresting villains, and imprisoning
the more serious offenders. The latter,
colloquially referred to as “banging them up,”
appeared to me as a fairly robust mechanism
complementing both justice and deterrent.
After all, who the hell would ever want to
return to one of the many dilapidated UK
prisons? Not me!
I had visited several prisons when returning
remand prisoners after a hearing. HMP
Reading, built in 1844, and famous for
62
OCTOBER 2022
incarnating Irish poet and playwright Oscar
Wilde fifty-one years later, was the most
local and it was grim the most inhospitable
place imaginable, until, that is, I entered HMP
Holloway erected shortly afterwards. In 1903
it became a female-only prison and was,
without doubt, one of the most intimidating
places that I had ever visited and I was
supposedly on the side of the good guys. But
perhaps the most frightening experience
was at Haslar juvenile detention center. The
manner in which the teen offender that my
colleague and I dropped off – as I recall, a
sociable guy who talked non-stop football on
the journey down – was treated after being
sentenced at Bracknell youth court will live
with me forever. I get the “short, sharp, shock”
treatment, but he was immediately stripped
of his dignity and humanity by prison officers
who had him standing face to the wall within
moments of our arrival. Such was the ferocity
of the verbal commands that I momentarily
felt compelled to react in the same manner.
Yet, no doubt, I processed this moment as
apparent evidence of the need to “bang up”
offenders, thus supporting my early career
indoctrination that suggested this was
the best method of crime prevention and
rehabilitation. As the years passed, I began to
question this doctrine and the facts appeared
to support my growing unease.
According to the most recent UK statistics
(published in April 2022) the percentage
of offenders who reoffended upon release
is a staggering 29.2%. Even more shocking
was the young offenders’ data that recorded
a heightened scale of 34.4%. As a means
of curtailing crime, our domestic criminal
justice system is clearly flawed. As a postgraduate criminologist, my mind jumped in all
directions as I sought to reconcile the myriad
of factors that underpin this tale of woe. But
one piece of evidence kept pushing itself to
the front of the queue. What had happened
to the kid whom I had taken to Haslar that
day? The one who had made me laugh. The
one that I instinctively knew was more good
than bad. What side of the percentages had
he fallen into upon his release? How had his
life changed? And just as importantly, how
had this event changed those around him –
his loved ones and close friends? This wasn’t
to be a reflection upon an emotional reunion
with him – meeting his family and celebrating
his life successes since the trail was now
cold and maybe he was content to leave it that
way. But the nagging doubts that surrounded
my once clinical view of the prison system
wouldn’t abate.
I had known Natalie for a couple of years. A
funny, vivacious independent lady whose
boys were the center of her universe bright
young men with the world awaiting their
individual vision and vitality. Exciting times
for any parent. We both lived in the same
town and our kids were schooled locally too.
On the face of it, both of our families were,
dare I say it, ordinary. But then, what the hell
is “ordinary” within the context of family?
Natalie had, in my opinion, an extraordinary
story to tell because one of her boys had
been banged up and was facing several years
behind bars. For what seemed an eternity
I conveniently side-stepped the issue,
offering only supportive words of perceived
understanding and empathy. But how could
I really know what to say when this situation
was so unfathomable to me, and how the
hell was Natalie able to process the gravity
of the situation and still maintain a life when
such an important member was missing? Yet
my Haslar companion had made more of an
impact on my view of punishment than either
of us could ever have imagined as we headed
towards the south coast all those years
ago. Plucking up the courage I eventually
asked Natalie if I could talk to her about her
experiences; to my surprise she agreed.
---Can you tell me about Ryan, especially
his dreams and aspirations?
“Ryan was and still is a very bright, talented,
polite, and caring young man. Always the first
to help anyone he saw struggling or being
bullied, liked by his teachers for having the
cheekiest of smiles, and by his classmates for
always making them laugh. He grew up with
two older brothers. Unfortunately, at the
age of two he became a statistic of a broken
home. His father put lots of time, effort and
resources into the older brothers, and Ryan
spent much of his time with me. He was, and
still is, loved very much by mum, brothers and
grandparents and he knew this.”
“He spent his younger years playing
football for the local team, with mum ferrying
him around every weekend in the wind,
rain, and snow! Around the age of eleven, he
decided he wanted to follow in the footsteps
of his older brothers onto the basketball court
and played for a local team. He showed much
promise and was picked to play for the South
Region under 13’s. Ryan and myself were
exceptionally close and still are. My older sons
give a wry smile when he calls me from prison
and my face lights up and announce that
‘mums treasured delight’ is on the phone!”
What were the circumstances
that led to his arrest and eventual
conviction?
“We had a massive change in circumstances,
once living in a very nice house; a good school
in a nice area. Through no fault of our own we
had to move into social housing. That brought
a lot of challenges for us as a family. Oldest
son was on his way to university, second son
was sitting his ‘A’ levels and Ryan transferred
to a local school. From my perspective this is
when everything fell apart for him.”
“Money was in short supply. I was working
two jobs, with no financial support from
the boys’ father. No support in any way to
be honest, physically, or emotionally. Their
father was a controlling bully towards both
me and the boys and did not see them and
still doesn’t. Out of the three of them Ryan
had the least amount of contact. At 13 he saw
my daily struggles and always hugged me and
said, ‘Mum, it won’t always be like this. I’m
going to look after you’”.
“The catalyst for me was Christmas 2015. We
had moved into the ‘new house’ which was
riddled with fleas and thirty years of dust
and grease. I couldn’t afford to buy the boys
any Christmas presents that year not one.
I just about managed to put a decent meal on
the table for the big day. The older boys were
more understanding, but I know this hit Ryan
hard, and the look on his face will haunt me to
this day. I carry a lot of blame for not being in a
better financial position to support my sons.”
“Shortly after this, I noticed a huge difference
in his behaviour he was surly, argumentative,
and would be in constant trouble at school.
Every day I would get a call to go and see the
Head, or Deputy. Eventually he was expelled.
The school were in no way understanding or
supportive. He began to get into trouble with
the police who were forever knocking on my
door. Social Services were involved, and again
were of no use. Ryan was at this point selling
marijuana. This progressed to class ‘A’ drugs,
for which he was arrested at the age of 17. This
was not a deterrent.”
“On Friday 27th March 2020, one week after
COVID lockdown, my oldest son and I were
about to take our new puppy for a walk when
I heard a commotion on the road where we
live. I looked out of the bedroom window to
see three grown men running up and down
shouting Ryan’s name and asking people
where he lived. One of the neighbours ‘kindly’
furnished them with the number and the
next thing I knew was the men kicking down
the front door. My oldest son ran down the
stairs although I begged him not to. I was still
upstairs shouting and screaming with fear.
The next thing I heard was the front window
shattering. One of them had smashed
through it with a paving block, threatening
to kill the whole family if we didn’t tell him
where Ryan was. I was on the phone to the
police not knowing what was happening to
my oldest son.”
“The men eventually left quite casually as
though they hadn’t just threatened to kill
a young man and his middle-aged mother.
Earlier in the day, the same men and a couple
of their family members had attempted to
kidnap Ryan armed with weapons. Shortly
afterwards, I heard police sirens in the
distance. Little did I know that Ryan’s world,
and that of his family were about to come
OCTOBER 2022
tumbling down.”
“Ryan called later that evening and apologised
and told me not to worry and that, no matter
what happened, to always remember that he
loved me. I didn’t hear from Ryan until the
3rd of April. He called me to say he was on
remand for attempted murder. I later found
out that after the men had left my house that
day, they called Ryan to say if you don’t come
and meet us, we are going back to the family
house to ‘finish the job off.’ Ryan – who was
just 18 years old went to meet them. Six
grown men. Thugs with a long history of
criminal behaviour. There was an altercation.
One of them got stabbed.”
“In September 2020, Ryan went to court
to stand trial with two co-defendants. He
was sentenced to nine-and-a-half years for
Section 18 – causing grievous bodily harm
with intent and drugs offences.”
How did you process this period
and what happened to you when
the verdict was announced?
“Most days were spent sobbing. All day.
Everyday. Not eating. Blaming myself.
Dreaming about him. Hardly sleeping, with
his sweatshirt next to me, night after night
smelling his aftershave; driving myself insane
with stress and anxiety.”
“The court case was unimaginable my
beautiful loving son behind a wall of glass,
hardly able to look at me as I gave evidence in
relation to the men that broke into our home.
64
6*;6),9
Every day for over three weeks the pain was
immeasurable. The jury were stony-faced
and frankly looked bored. They sat there
nonchalantly, just waiting to get it over with.
I wanted to scream out to them that this was
my son’s future they were dealing with. But it
wasn’t their concern, was it?”
“The verdict was read out and I sat motionless
in the grubby courtroom seat. There were
wails from the mother of one of the other
defendants, who ran out of the courtroom
screaming and crying. I looked through the
thick glass panel where my son was and put
my palm up against it. He did the same. I told
him how much I loved him, and then I heard
the clanging of the keys as he was led away.”
talk to people, or even carry on. But I have to.
I have two other sons that need their mum. I
hide behind a painted-on smile. People think
I’m dealing with it. I’m not. I cry a lot.”
“I have lost friends but made new ones who
appear too not be so judgemental! I am
prepared to cut ties with people who cannot
accept that I have a son in prison. My sons
will always come first no matter what.”
What is it like for you as a loving
parent?
“Heart-breaking. I feel guilty about going
about daily life. Guilty for daring to book a
much-needed holiday. Lots of guilt for so
many reasons.”
What support was given to you
and your family?
“None at all. From anyone. Not a visit. Not a
phone call. To this very day. The three men
who broke into my home did not get any
charges against them, despite DNA evidence.
What kind of justice is that?”
Does it feel like the criminal justice
system is working?
“Absolutely not! No rehabilitation. No
access to learning facilities. Locked up
twenty-three hours a day. The system is
severely broken undertrained staff and
sometimes no staff at all.”
What type of facility was he
initially held in and has this
subsequently changed?
“From arrest up until today, he is held in a
Youth Offenders Institution due to his age.”
How is Ryan dealing with this?
“Ryan is a mentally strong young man. He
reads, he works out, and he keeps his head
down. He says, ‘It could be worse. My life is
still to start mum.’”
How has this changed your life?
“In every way imaginable. I have just started
to sleep through the night after two years. I
miss him every moment of every day. There
are times when I don’t want to socialise, smile,
Will Ryan ever be able to pick
up where he left off and
pursue his life goals?
“I have no doubt at all that Ryan
will turn his life around and he
will pursue his dreams and aspirations. His
older brothers are working hard to ensure
that when Ryan is home, they are in a position
to support and encourage him. Ryan was
raised with morals, boundaries, and love in
abundance. I know in my heart that he will
come through this a better man.”
How do you deal with other
people’s perceptions and values?
“In all honesty, I take absolutely no notice
of what others say now. They don’t matter.
They are entitled to their opinions. We
are all judgemental in one way or another.
People ‘blame’ the parents for not raising
their children correctly. What exactly is
‘correctly’? What happened to my son can
happen to anyone, not just the poor and
under privileged. I know my son. That is all
that matters.”
When will Ryan be due for
release?
“2025.”
How would you change the
criminal justice system for the
better?
“Invest in the system with the appropriate staff
to delve into the underlying issues of how that
young offender entered the criminal world.
From my own personal experience, although
I believed I was a good parent who set
boundaries and instilled discipline, this
came from an emotive place. Young
male teenagers require a strong male
role – a discipline a father can give is
something quite different to what
most mothers are capable of.”
someone to listen. To guide. To care.”
“At a stage where I was at a loss with my young
teenage son, I thought the police were on my
side. They came to my home full of smiles and
empathy - after all Ryan was a minor. Outside
of the house they were a different entity.
Goading my son - one officer even followed
him into a restaurant and whispered into his
ear, “I’m going to get you “! He eventually did
with a taser and police dog biting at his ass!”
My time spent with the extraordinary Natalie
was both emotional and enlightening. A
sliding doors moment that could so easily
have happened to my son. Our family homes
are only a short walk away from one another.
In many ways our lives and aspirations were,
at one moment in time, pretty similar. Yet
my son, in some twist of epic irony, is now
a criminal barrister whilst Ryan is on the
other side of the great criminal justice divide.
Depressingly Natalie had only added to my
conviction that the manner in which we
punish appears to ignore the vital opportunity
to rehabilitate which surely must occur to
better protect us all. The moral codes – both
written and unrecorded that bind each and
every one of us, and the communities we live
in, need a criminal justice system that actually
works. The statistics are damning and will
continue to be so until we put aside our
convenient contempt for the vast majority
of those that are simply imprisoned with no
exit plan, and wise up to the notion that, but
for a twist of fate, Natalie’s story may not be
so unique.
“He had just turned 18 and the police were out
for him. Not for the bigger criminals further
up the ladder - just a young misinformed
naive young man. Social Services? There to
protect and help ? Useless and clueless. My
son was failed - by his father, the police, and
social services.”
“Let’s lock him up for his heinous crime for
twenty-three and a half hours a day. No social
time. Not even a shower at weekends due to
staff shortages. Some people may say, “No less
than they deserve!” No, if prison is to reform
then how do they achieve this? How does the
time they spend inside lead them to motivate
and educate themselves to create a better,
more productive life? What tools are they
providing to ensure they are equipped to deal
with a life outside?”
“Invest in staff - in coaching, life skills. Looking
at individual circumstances. Accessing each
case individually - not referencing some law
book that states a certain crimes equates to a
certain sentence. Offenders want to change.
Maybe they are inwardly crying out for
What can we do to lessen another Ryan’s
story? There is, perhaps, no one simple
solution, but by talking and seeking to learn
from one another we can at least better
understand what is more likely to work than
simply banging them up. And who knows
– preventing the circumstances that lead to
this outcome in the first place. I know that
Natalie’s candid account has helped me and
for that I will always be grateful.

PRANCING
HORSE
OF PRACTICALITY
Brace yourself, Ferrari has joined the school
run race, just don’t expect it to park on the
muddy sports field

Firstly, let’s get the pronunciation right
The proportions are spot on. It’s not a small

syllables to curl your tongue around.
way. It points a royal middle finger to modern
downsizing trends. It looks as though they got
the DNA just right – much like Aston’s DBX
– and didn’t take the easy option of trying to
build an 812 Superfast on stilts. On that
subject, this is not even a Maserati Levante in
disguise – the Purosangue rides on its own
wants everyone to have the full experience,
and exit with a slightly quickened pulse. But is
it luxurious? Probably not, if your definition of
lux is to have shiny tablet screens and wireless
charging bays, or the ability to change music
and plug in a pair of headphones.
platform with aluminum and expensive
carbon fiber giving it a strong core.
Ferrari’s latest designs try and reduce the
overt appearance of vents and minimize
spoilers and it is no different on the
Purosangue. It’s mature, for a buyer who likes
form and function to work hand in hand.
The passenger is slightly more entertained
with a separate 10-inch instrument display
that shows everything from vehicle functions,
multimedia and navigation. It makes the
driver feel like he has a qualified co-pilot on
board; one who handles the admin and
systems while the driver tries to exercise every
ounce of restraint to stay on the right side of
the law. If you’ve recently sat inside an SF90
the view of the steering wheel and the
placement of buttons will be familiar.
On paper it’s written as Purosangue but PurOh-San-Gway - the Italian word for
thoroughbred - is actually how it’s said. And
you’re likely to be saying it a lot in the coming
months around every barbeque or car meet
because it could totally transform the
company in the same way that the Cayenne
upturned Porsche’s profits.
Another faux pa to avoid would be to call the
Purosangue an ‘SUV’. According to Ferrari
this is a crossover, but probably not in the
same rhetoric that the Ford Puma is also a
crossover… It’s easier and more elegant to call
it Ferrari’s first four-door, four-seater – the
closest thing to it being the GTC4Lusso, but
that only has two doors.
Nevertheless, one of the longest waits is
finally over and we can happily say it has been
worth it. It almost feels far less controversial
and sacrilegious in pictures than it initially did
in principle.
76
OCTOBER 2022
We’ve known for a while that the Purosangue
would implement suicide doors in a way that
feels inspired by Rolls-Royce’s treatment of
rear passengers, minus the umbrella. Look for
a well-hidden lever in the shoulder line and
then stand back as the doors glide on their
rear hinge with the precision of German
engineering coated in Italian flair. It’s perhaps
the greatest door design Ferrari has devised
since the Enzo or LaFerrari.
It’s big inside, which is again a testament to
how well Ferrari has used the space. The rear
The Purosangue is the first test to see whether
the interior can adapt to new demands and
requirements of an unfamiliar crossover.
Considering that this Ferrari will rack up more
mileage than other prancing horses, these
interactions need to hold up over time with
less compromise and quirks. Fortunately the
technology and ergonomics seem to have
made the difficult transition with aplomb.
“It’s big inside,
which is again
testament to how
well Ferrari has
used the space.”
It just feels right that Ferrari has gone with a
V12 for the Purosangue. It adds credibility,
something to anchor the Prancing Horse amid
a world of change and evolution. That also
means there’s no hybrid assistance, no
additional weight of motors or batteries and
one completely unfiltered soundtrack. It’s also
the only powertrain at this time, although with
Ferrari’s arsenal of V8s and V6s, that might
change over time.
The engine, wedged so far back in the nose you
half expect it to be visible from the cabin, is
paired to Ferrari’s 8-speed auto hanging out
near the rear axle. This packaging miracle
results in a near 50:50 weight distribution. The
V12 displaces 6.5-liters and revs to 8250rpm. It
makes a colossal 715hp but torque (528lb/ft) is
no match for its turbo-charged adversaries.
Ferrari wants the driver to work and rev the
engine, not just sit back and float along on a
wave of torque.
Performance has been benchmarked against
everything else you might be considering in a
small but growing niche of wildly excessive
displays of wealth; the 0-60m/h time of 3.3
seconds and a top speed of 193mph will put a
smile on all four faces. Like the GTC4Lusso,
power is delivered to all four wheels but once
you get over 124mph (often I presume), it’ll
switch to rear wheel drive. The rear rubber is
also connected to Ferrari’s rear-wheel steering
system which is then migrated into Ferrari’s
Slide Slip Control. This highly customizable
system works with the car’s traction control and
ABS, plus a plethora of sensors to subtly apply
some invisible help without blunting the fun.
Tellingly there’s no track mode and also no
off-road mode. In fact, Ferrari is not saying
much about the Purosangue’s ability to go off
the beaten track. You can raise the suspension
marginally but it simply wasn’t a priority for
the engineers. This is still very much a car
that’s more comfortable on the autobahn
versus kicking up stones and wading across
flooded streams.
Early speculation around pricing places in the
Purosangue at approximately $400,000. If
there’s some truth to this, the new kid on the
block is considerably more expensive than the
Urus and the Aston Martin DBX, both of which
do possess more off-road ability and torquier
engines. Then there’s the similarly price
Rolls-Royce Cullinan, with Purosanguematching suicide doors. There’s a lot of ways to
spend your money in this niche segment, but
now it’s a family decision, not a selfish one.

CAGE
FIGHTER
The launch of any Porsche GT3 model generally makes
the entire motoring world stand up and take notice and
when that model happens to carry the iconic RS
letters, the anticipation is palpable.
The new model has big shoes to fill; the GT3 RS has
earned itself a formidable reputation that goes back
nearly twenty years with the erstwhile 996 GT3 RS.
For many Porsche connoisseurs, each generation has
been considered the definitive track car, and one that
you can drive home.
Based off the current 992 shape, this latest GT3 RS
introduces a more effective aero package along with
small power upgrades. The shape is anything but
subtle, thanks to a plethora of wings and vents that
will have spent considerable time in a wind tunnel.
Even parts of the double wishbone have
78
OCTOBER 2022
teardrop-shaped profiles to add some
downforce at top speed.
The headline news is that the
spine-tingling 4.0-liter remains naturally
aspirated with revised camshafts raising
the power figure to 386kW. Porsche –
never one to overpromise on performance
numbers – claims the new GT3 RS can
reach 60m/h from standstill in 3.2
seconds. This is achieved with the help of
Porsche’s 7-speed PDK gearbox – a
manual alternative is not on the cards.
The bold new aero design is not for
aesthetic reasons, although who could
deny the GT3 RS’s purposeful presence
Porsche’s latest GT3
RS is an evolution of
a track weapon
and attitude is a positive side effect. Every
exterior element has been refined and
tweaked to result in extreme levels of
downforce; double the amount produced
by its predecessor, the 991.2.
This is further influenced by a set of
active aerodynamics at the front and rear,
with the large rear wing coupled to a Drag
Reduction System, which can be activated
by a button on the steering wheel.
Those who want to chase the final few
tenths of laptime can also adjust the car’s
rebound and compression ratios from the
steering wheel.

BMW
GOES
VEGAN
BMW plans to launch a range of vegan interiors by the end
of 2023. These vegan interiors, which will become an
alternative to animal-sourced leather, form part of BMW’s
relentless pursuit to reduce overall carbon emissions and
reach carbon neutrality by 2050.
BMW has been moving away from leather to more
sustainable materials over the years and believes this is
the next, cutting-edge step for the company’s future.
80
OCTOBER 2022
Determined to lower its
carbon footprint, BMW
is farming elsewhere
It is reported that BMW’s proportion of
vehicle components that contain traces of
raw materials of animal origin will fall to
less than one percent in the respective BMW
and MINI vehicles.
According to BMW, most of the emissions
produced, around 80 percent, came in the
form of methane gas from cattle rearing.
The remaining 20 percent was accounted for
by processing of the cowhide, which is highly
energy- and water-intensive.
Initially, these vegan materials will be used
for interior touchpoints such as steering
wheels, with BMW confident that it meets
the demands for high wear resistance and
durability while retaining a premium look and
feel. The only difference in appearance will be a
new grain texture.
“With a steering wheel made from a high-quality
vegan surface material, we are fulfilling the
wishes of our customers who do not want to
make any compromises in terms of look, feel,
and functionality.
The innovative material withstands wear and
tear caused by abrasion, perspiration and
moisture and has all the desirable properties of
leather,” says Uwe Köhler, Head of Development
Body, Exterior Trim, Interior at the BMW
Group.”
Markets like America, China and Europe are
expected to lead the initial take-up of these
vegan interiors and it will be interesting to see
how other markets react.
