As for me, I have little free time because I spend about 7 hours at school and it usually takes me 4 hours to do my homework. Do teenagers need more free time? In my opinion teenagers do not get many hours to themselves, so they need more time for various activities such as sports, hobbies, excursions, drama clubs or music. What hobbies are popular with your friends? My friends have various hobbies, for example, one of them sings in a choir and the other is fond of collecting coins from different countries. Is reading books a useful hobby? I’m sure that reading is very useful as it helps you relax, improves your vocabulary and gives you a chance to ‘travel’ around the world. Why is playing computer games so popular today? I think playing computer games is so popular these days because they help people forget about their everyday problems and plunge into exciting adventures. What dangerous hobbies do you know? Пример задания 3 — What you should do to stay beautiful and healthy. — Why physical attractiveness is important. - What you can do to improve your fitness level. I would like to give a short talk about health and beauty. I think that everyone wants to stay healthy and to be in good shape. That is why it is important to exercise regularly, to sleep 7-8 hours per day and to stick to a healthy diet. Besides, people should give up their bad habits and try to avoid stressful situations. From my point of view physical attractiveness is important for everyone because beautiful people can easily find friends and get well-paid jobs. They often feel confident and satisfied with their lives. But one should not forget that inner beauty can be much more important than physical beauty. Personally, I want to be strong and attractive, that’s why I go to the gym twice a week. I’ve made my workout a regular part of my week. In addition, I like jogging and riding a bike. It improves my mood and increases my energy level. I’ve come to the end of my talk, thank you for listening. 6
ANIMALS 1 Task 1. You are going to read the text aloud. You have 1.5 minutes to read the text silently, and then be ready to read it aloud. Remember that you will not have more than 2 minutes for reading aloud. Animal welfare is a growing concern in today’s society. There are many people who believe that zoos are unethical. They argue that it is cruel to remove animals from their natural habitat and keep them in cages for the public to look at. An animal kept in a zoo will lead a different life to an animal that lives in the wild, for example animals in zoos don’t have to hunt for food. Furthermore, some animals become unhappy in zoos because there isn’t enough space. Zoos feature animals from places all over the world and animals must therefore adjust to different climates and seasons, depending on the location of the zoo in relation to where the animal comes from. On the other hand, a trip to the zoo can be an educational experience. Besides, zoos are involved in many conservation projects. Due to threats such as poaching, there are arguably many species which would be extinct if they weren’t kept in zoos. (from ‘Zoos: Cruel or Caring?’ learnenglishteens.britishcouncil.org) T Task 2. The great appeal of most online games is that there are lots of different things to do in it, and depending on what kind of person you are, there’ll always be something within a particular game that’s likely to appeal to you. It is a world and you have all the elements like a regular world would have. You can buy and sell things. You see actual figurines that represent a person. When you die you resurrect, it’s that safe and that easy. It’s great entertainment, but for some players and net users who get hooked it can be a disaster. ‘Addicts’ deprived of computer access exhibit rage, distress and even violence. Amongst young people in some countries, video game playing is almost universal. Gamers lose all sense of time and get seriously upset if interrupted. They can neglect their responsibilities at home and at work, fall behind at school, and put their future at risk. (from ‘Hooked on the Net?’ abc.net.au) 2 Task 2. EDUCATION Task 1. You are going to read the text aloud. You have 1.5 minutes to read the text silently, and then be ready to read it aloud. Remember that you will not have more than 2 minutes for reading aloud. Today more parents are making the decision to educate their children at home. There are both advantages and disadvantages to homeschooling. In a home school setting, children and their parents have one-to-one lessons. Public school teachers, on the other hand, have classrooms full of twenty to thirty children to provide attention to, which decreases the amount of attention that each student gets from the teacher. Parents have no way to adjust what a public school decides to teach to the students. Homeschooling gives parents the authority to create a curriculum based on what types of information students of a particular age and grade level should know. However, children who are homeschooled miss out on many social activities. That is why parents who home school their children should sign them up for sports teams or community clubs with other children their age. While vast advancements in technology and industry have made life much easier, these innovations have also created an ever-growing monster - pollution. These days almost the entire world is faced with a “dirty” problem. Nevertheless, there are cities all over the planet that have really outdone themselves when it comes to being polluted. With approximately 3 million people of its residents affected by the pollution problem, the city of Linfen in China is perhaps the most polluted city in the world. The hills surrounding the Chinese city are peppered with tons of coal mines, legal as well as illegal. One simply can’t sniff the air without smelling the odor of burning coal. Furthermore, the pollution is so great that if you hang your laundry, you’ll find that your clothes turn black even before they dry. FAMILY 1 Task 1. You are going to read the text aloud. You have 1.5 minutes to read the text silently, and then be ready to read it aloud. Remember that you will not have more than 2 minutes for reading aloud. The Oxford dictionary defines the word “family” as “a group of people consisting of two parents and their children, or who are related by blood or marriage”. Of course, there are many variants of that definition - but what they all have in common is the notion of people protecting each other. Family is such an emotive word that a dictionary definition will always struggle to pin it down. It is a core element of personal economy; one of the things that defines who we are and how we see ourselves. It gives us a sense of place in the world. For many young people family is a safety net to fall back on as we go out and create strong bonds with others. It’s all change again when it’s time to start families of our own. Then, we become the protector and source of stability for our own children. (From ‘The Evolution of Family Life’ by Rachel Halliwell) 2 Task 2. You are going to take part in a telephone survey. FASHION 1 Task 1. You are going to read the text aloud. You have 1.5 minutes to read the text silently, and then be ready to read it aloud. Remember that you will not have more than 2 minutes for reading aloud. Many pieces of clothing are invented for a functional purpose before they ever become fashionable, but as they become symbolic of a certain kind of lifestyle, certain items become expressive of meaning. For example, cowboy boots originated as functional footwear for men working in the American West. Cowboys were seen as rugged and individualistic because of the demands of their occupation, and cowboy boots have persisted as a choice fashion item for people wishing to express these values. Even when worn far from ranches or cows, cowboy boots continue to signify values that appeal to people everywhere. Fashion is often fueled by the desire to be different enough to stand out but similar enough to belong to the group that your clothing helps identify. . Ingredients of Chinese food are various and sometimes shocking to foreigners. Chinese cuisine varies across China. There are many regional cuisines with different flavors: spicy, sweet, sour and hearty. China has its own unique dinning culture and etiquette, which foreign visitors may find quite different from what they are used to. Chinese use chopsticks to pick up food, not knives and forks. There are usually no salt or pepper shakers, or tomato sauce on the table. But you may find bottles of soy sauce, vinegar, and chili paste on the table. FOREIGN LANGUAGES 1 Task 1. You are going to read the text aloud. You have 1.5 minutes to read the text silently, and then be ready to read it aloud. Remember that you will not have more than 2 minutes for reading aloud. Nowadays, the ‘Guinness Book of World Records’ no longer awards a place to the person who can speak the most languages. This is likely due to general confusion on the definition of fluency - and how difficult it is to test the claims of polyglots. There are plenty of examples of people through history who have claimed to have held command over a staggering amount of languages. The most impressive living example of a hyperpolyglot is probably Alexander Arguelles, who has studied and to some degree understands around 50 languages. Alexander caught the language bug at university when he began studying German. From then on, he devoted himself to learning as many languages as he could in his lifetime. He notes that the further he goes with his learning, the easier languages come to him. When he first started learning Swedish he was able to hold a complex conversation within three weeks. Yet, he considers this an early stage of learning a language, with much work left to go. (from ‘How Many Languages Can One Person Speak?’ by Benny Lewis) Task 2. FRIENDS 1 Task 1. You are going to read the text aloud. You have 1.5 minutes to read the text silently, and then be ready to read it aloud. Remember that you will not have more than 2 minutes for reading aloud. Writers have the reputation for being solitary. However, every now and then they forge bonds of friendship with one another. Hemingway and Fitzgerald met in Paris in 1925. Fitzgerald had already published a few novels. Hemingway had not even published his first yet. But despite of feelings of jealousy and competitiveness the two became close friends. Fitzgerald even helped edit ‘The Sun Also Rises’. Fantasy giants Lewis and Tolkien first met at Oxford University, where the two both belonged to a group of writers known as The Inklings. They had a very intimate friendship, Tolkien even playing a key role in converting Lewis to Christianity. That is not to say their friendship was perfect, however. They bickered over the quality of each other’s work, and they finally drifted apart when Lewis took up with an American widow. (from ‘Friendships between Famous Authors’ pagepulp.com) 2 Task 2. HEALTH & BEAUTY 1 Task 1. You are going to read the text aloud. You have 1.5 minutes to read the text silently, and then be ready to read it aloud. Remember that you will not have more than 2 minutes for reading aloud. Some people suppose that face makes a person beautiful, some others think that it’s our body which makes us beautiful. A lot of people nowadays are sure that a courageous spirit and a generous heart make us beautiful. Anyway, so many people, so many minds. For centuries people have tried to come up with a mathematical formula for beauty. The ancient Greeks, for example, thought the number three was the answer - a beautiful face was one that could be divided into three exactly equal parts, hairline to eyebrows, eyebrows to mouth, and finally mouth to chin. The Victorians believed that a face with great beauty possessed the average features of all other faces. However, recent research has found that the most attractive faces have higher cheekbones, a thinner jaw and larger eyes relative to the size of the face than an average one. HOBBIES 1 Task 1. You are going to read the text aloud. You have 1.5 minutes to read the text silently, and then be ready to read it aloud. Remember that you will not have more than 2 minutes for reading aloud. Most people have hobbies that anyone would look at as normal, but there are hobbies that not many of us would take up. People come up with the oddest, not ever wondering if what they’re doing is actually a waste of time or not. Gathering up a group of people who find a common interest in say a famous singer would seem fun. You could start out on your own club where the fans can get together and watch concerts for hours on end over the weekend. You can have members wear matching shirts with the singer’s picture on the front. Decorate the fan club room with posters that you can travel around and collect from souvenir stores or their hometowns. Celebrate their birthdays, read up on them extensively and tour the country to catch a glimpse of your idols in the flesh. (from ‘Unusual Hobbies’ List byNaomi Sarah) 2 Task 2. Remember that you will not have more than 2 minutes for reading aloud. In the last five decades or so, the media and its influence on the societies, has grown with the advance of technology. First there was the telegraph and the post offices, then the radio, the newspaper, magazines, television and now the internet and the new media including palmtops, cell phones etc. The first and foremost function of the media in a society is to provide news and information to the masses, that is why the present era is some time termed as ‘the information age’ as well. Entertainment would be the other function of the mass media where it is mostly used by the masses to amuse them in present day hectic environment. Educating the masses about their rights, moral, social and religious obligations is another important function of mass media. We have put our trust on the media to give us news, entertainment and education. The media has a huge impact on society in shaping the public opinion of the masses. MONEY 1 Task 1. You are going to read the text aloud. You have 1.5 minutes to read the text silently, and then be ready to read it aloud. Remember that you will not have more than 2 minutes for reading aloud. Trading is one of the first ways that people have gotten what they need. For example, in the past, salt was very important to people. They traded salt for shoes, tools, weapons and food. This method of trading is called bartering, but it does not always work well. Over time, people developed a new system. Instead of bartering, they would trade for particular objects. These objects were often rare or beautiful. But sometimes the objects were even common things. These special objects are called proto-money. Proto means “first in time” or “earliest.” So, proto-money is the first, or earliest kind of money. Some cultures used objects such as seeds, pieces of wood, animal skins, cloth, and shells. However, the most popular kind of proto-money was metal. Something very valuable was worth a larger amount and weight of metal. Using metal as money led people to create metal coins. (from ‘the History of Money’ spotlightenglish.com) Task 2. SCHOOL LIFE 1 Task 1. You are going to read the text aloud. You have 1.5 minutes to read the text silently, and then be ready to read it aloud. Remember that you will not have more than 2 minutes for reading aloud. UK schools are allowed to discipline pupils who behave badly in various ways. Pupils are usually punished for playing truant, smoking, swearing, hitting, running, stealing, not doing homework, bullying, cheating in exams and wearing unsuitable clothes for school. UK schools often use such ways of punishment as exclusion, suspension, detention and lines. A pupil can be excluded from the school and cannot come back. When a pupil is suspended they cannot enter the building or attend lessons until the school has a meeting about their case. Detention means a pupil is asked to stay at school at the end of the school day. The pupil must work for 30 minutes or an hour more before they are allowed to leave the school. Sometimes during detention a pupil has to write a sentence many times on a sheet of paper. Many schools in the UK now give parents a home/school contract explaining the school discipline and rules. SHOPPING 1 Task 1. You are going to read the text aloud. You have 1.5 minutes to read the text silently, and then be ready to read it aloud. Remember that you will not have more than 2 minutes for reading aloud. Shopping has a far greater impact on the environment than may be immediately apparent. After food, clothing purchases alone have the second highest environmental impact of all our consumption activities. The amount of water used in the production and transport of clothes bought by an average household each year is 150,000 litres. Even products you might think are environmentally neutral, like your favourite band’s latest CD, will often require significant resources to produce. Consider the energy and embodied water used in the creation of the disc, its booklet and packaging, how the CD was transported to the shop and how you travelled to buy it. A substantial amount of household energy consumption and greenhouse pollution can be attributed to white goods (fridges, freezers, washing machines, televisions and clothes dryers). Look for, and only purchase items that are water and energy efficient. (from ‘Shop Green’ go-green.ae) Task 2. You are going to take part in a telephone survey. You have to answer six questions. Fortunately, what was at this time unimaginable, nowadays is very present; obvious there are still some items that aren’t used in practice but it won’t take a long time until these will became usual. Once with the release of the multitude of smartphones and tablets, the gadget market simply exploded and people are still very interested in it. TRAVEL & TOURISM 1 Task 1. You are going to read the text aloud. You have 1.5 minutes to read the text silently, and then be ready to read it aloud. Remember that you will not have more than 2 minutes for reading aloud. In the past wealthy people travelled to distant parts of the world to see great buildings, works of art, learn new languages, experience new cultures, and taste different cuisines. During the Roman Republic, spas and coastal resorts were popular among the rich. Modern tourism can be traced to what was known as the Grand Tour, which was a traditional trip around Europe, (especially Germany and Italy), undertaken by mainly upper-class. Mass tourism developed with improvements in technology, which allowed the transport of large numbers of people in a short period of time to places of leisure interest, so that greater numbers of people could begin to enjoy the benefits of leisure time. Nowadays tourists have a wide range of budgets and tastes, and a wide variety of resorts and hotels have developed to cater for them. For example, some people prefer simple beach vacations, while others want more specialised holidays and quieter resorts. (Wikipedia) 2 Task 2. You are going to take part in a telephone survey. WORK & CAREER 1 Task 1. You are going to read the text aloud. You have 1.5 minutes to read the text silently, and then be ready to read it aloud. Remember that you will not have more than 2 minutes for reading aloud. A job hopper is someone who works briefly in one position after another rather than staying at any one job or organization long-term. Although most people change jobs more frequently than was the case in the past, job hoppers do so more often. Years ago, it was not uncommon for people to work for the same employer their entire careers. In recent decades, however, people typically change jobs at least a few times through their careers. Some employers are still reluctant to hire job hoppers. Others, however, would prefer to see applicants with a few jobs on their resumes to those who have stayed in one job for a long time. Employers often fear such individuals are resistant to change or simply unmotivated. People who have worked in a number of different capacities and in different corporate environments, on the other hand, are likely to have a broader range of skills and be more adaptable. YOUTH PROBLEMS L Task 1. You are going to read the text aloud. You have 1.5 minutes to read the text silently, and then be ready to read it aloud. Remember that you will not have more than 2 minutes for reading aloud. Teenagers begin to separate from Mom and Dad in an attempt to become more independent. At the same time, teenagers are increasingly aware of how others, especially their teenage peers view them. They often start experimenting with different looks and behaviors and they become sensitive to how they differ from their teenage peers. This often can result in conflict between parents and teenagers. Teens need to detach a bit from their parents; especially the parent whom they’re the closest to. This is evident when your teenager appears to always have different point of view than you. Parents should be careful to allow their teenagers’ opinions and tastes to differ from their own. This is a difficult stage for parents and teenagers alike. (from ‘Teenagers in the Land of Confusion’ dictionaryfordads.com) 2 Task 2. You are going to take part in a telephone survey.
